How do you make a MacBook Pro talk to an Epson printer?
MacBook Pro
OS X 10.6.8
(Thinking about getting another MacBook)
I had an Epson Artisan printer, got an Epson Workforce WF-3640 new in Jan, hardly used because I cannot make it do what I want it to do. Wireless connection is good.
With the MacBook Pro, the interface with the Epson printers is not what it used to be on the G4: no ColorSync, no 2-sided, no thick paper, none of those kinds of instructions appear on the generic printer control panel. Which by the way, bears NO resemblance to the Epson manual screenshots, and the instructions in the Epson manual are useless.
How do you make a MacBook Pro talk to an Epson printer? And by the way, I cannot use the scanner either. I have to set up a document to print, then when the printing progress box appears, click on the scanner icon.
Also
Printer has 2 compartments. Top compartment #1 for all types paper.
Bottom compartment #2 for plain paper only.
I load glossy photo paper in #1, it prints plain paper from #2 even though I entered instructions on the control panel on the printer. If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

Please..how do you clean the Macbook Pro silver-coloured (aluminum?) outer case?
CailinGaelach wrote:
Vodka -- alcohol. Makes sense. I guess Irish whiskey wouldn't work as well due to the colour, because Jameson's would be my bevvy of choice if I were to down a few shots before.
Drink the Irish, and as for the cleaning Vodka, buy the absolute cheapest one in the store, the one you wouldn't want to drink.
They all meet FDA standards for human consumption unlike alcohol in the drug store. -

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

How would you upgrade my MacBook Pro 15" to maximize performance? No dollar limit.
I love my MCB, but am not technical.
Spend my money, theoretically -- If you had an unlimited budget to upgrade this system to make it fast and more efficient, what would you buy or do to it?
I'm deciding if I should scrap it and get a new MacBook Pro 13" instead. I like my MCB 15", but it seems to be getting hung up alot with the spinning rainbow, everyday apps freezing or crashing, and just slow when I have multiple windows open in Safari and Firefox at same time. I realize that the sites I browse to are more graphic intensive than they were when I got the MCB in 2008, but I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to spend some $$$ to upgrade whatever I can and save my pennies for a newer Mac in a year or two. Safari and Mail crash or get hung a lot, Photo Booth folder is mysteriously empty,
So should I expect to be able to get substantial performance improvement (speed, multi-tasking) if I upgrade whatever is upgradable?
I surf using multiple browsers and open many tabs and mail with numerous accounts and magicjack, ocassionally use iweb, pages, text, calendar, low intensity games.
Thanks for any advice and recommendations and thoughts. I'd probably get the Genius Bar to install upgrades.

Also -- it had a couple of soft drops to floor and one medium intensity drop, always on carpet. so the case (not unibody) is dented on the sides with ports. All "seem" to work fine except right side USB; looks pushed in and angled, and the plastic trim that fills in space connecting flat top of typing surface to bottom cover has a 4" piece cracked off (kind of looks like where grout would go). Devices work but if you move the wire it's power filckers off and on. Have never used firewire or thunderbolt ports on this.
I would like more USB port options (maybe a high grade extendor???) for Logitech laptop cooler, external HD, VOIP device, wired mouse, wired keyboard (I prefer wired).
Thanks again.Hello Neville,
Thanks for looking in to this and alerting me. I don't know how to interpret all the data in the descriptions of the USBs in your post (or mine, for that matter) Which descriptive line/codes show a USB 1.0 and a USB 2.0. I would like to understand how to read that.
Here's how I determined both are 2.0.
1. I checked my serial number at this Apple link and confirmed it is MacBook Pro 15" Early Version.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132
2. Then I looked up the technical specifications at this Apple support link:
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP4
3. .Then I double-checked and looked up tech specs at this EveryMac link:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .4-15-santa-rosa-specs.html
Both links say two USB 2.0 ports. I just took it for granted that they are both correct.
Much appreciation for your help.

HT201262 how do you confirm a Macbook Pro hard drive failure?
I have an older Macbook Pro that I want to bring back to life.
All indications point to full hard drive failure.
How do I confirm that the drive needs to be replaced?Welcome dadzpony,
The simplest way is to start it up with the original disks. Go to Disk Utility and try to repair the original drive. If Disk Utility can't repair it then it's probably dead.
If you had a drive in an external enclosure with an appropriate OS you could boot with that also. Hold "option" down while booting and select the drive you want to boot from.
The HD in this machine is easy to replace. Go here for instructions:

Can you plug your macbook pro to your monitor ?
as topic
thanks for answering
cheers
RonaldYep, you sure can. I have my MBP connected to a Samsung 730B via the digital input. This way I can use the dual screen feature to give me more desktop "elbow" room when I am working at home. Alternately, you can simply use the screen mirror option where what is on you MBP screen is also on your external monitor. If you have not purchased the external monitor yet, I would advise you get one with a digital input already built in.

Is there a way to get an imovie project from your macbook pro onto your ipod touch?
I want to put a movie i made on my camera roll or get it onto my itouch. Is there a way to do that without spending alot of money.
Thanks for a cognative answer TXMark.
For what its worth to any readers that work in education and would like this play once and stop 'feature'
I had great success in homeshareing a iTunes library of teaching material and creating topic specific playlist and used apple remote app to control an appletv connected to that homeshared library. As TXMark suggests, uncheck the songs in iTunes and the media will not automatically play the tracks in sequence.
note: if you have video media that you would like to have in the playlist, be sure its listed as a music video in the options of get info of track. otherwise the apple tv will not see the media in the playlist and will put it in the movies section of the library. -
Macbook pro to your ipad?
How do you look at and edit documents in word/excel etc created on your macbook pro on your ipad?
You can copy word and excel documents to the iPad, but first you need one or more apps on the iPad that support those document types - unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system, and everything on it has to be associated with an app.
The options include Apple's Pages app for Word documents and Numbers for Excel spreadsheets. And from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go (and 'premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.
As to how you then get the document to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc. Some apps also support iCloud storage e.g. Pages and iCloud. -
How can you watch a macbok pro on a tv
How can you watch a macbook pro on a tv? I have the right cable but it does not show anything from itunes.
I am assuming you have a mini-displayport/thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and of course a HDMI cable.
Set the TV to the input you connected the HDMI cable to.
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection. Try clicking detect displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection. Check your cables and make sure the mini-displayport plug is pushed firmly in. Mini-displayport plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in the socket.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen. Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p). Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown. You should see a picture at this point. I recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.
You may have to play with the underscan/overscan settings on your TV and the displays prefs for the TV if the picture is too small or larger for the TV screen.
Also, you need to set your Sound preferences to output to the HDMI connection. -

Connecting an External Display or Projector To connect an external display orprojector with a DVI connection to your computer: 1 Turn on the external display or projector . 2 Make sure the display cable is connected to the external projector or display. 3 Connect the display cable to your MacBook Pro . Your MacBook Pro automatically detects the external display. 4 Adjust the resolution on the external display by using the Displays pane of System Preferences or the Displays status menu in the menu bar.
