HT3258 Will installing Lion affect 10.6.8 on another disk or partition?

Will installing 10.7 and above affect 10.6.8 on another disk or partition?
Will booting to a disk with Lion or above bother disks that are used when the computer is booted into 10.6.8?

I have 10.6.8 and two hard drives. I am reluctant to upgrade, even though 10.6.8 seems to give me an annoying "outbreak" of the black veil of death from time to time.
I have an external hard drive, but I can't even copy the OS back to the internal hard drive! I'm wondering if it's not allowed.
I was wondering if it's possible to buy Lion and install it on the internal HD, the one without an OS on it. That way, when/if I want to use the software that's incompatible with Lion, I could boot up with the external HD/10.6.8. Otherwise, including when I want to fire up Windows, I'd boot up using the internal HD/Lion.
Is it possible to install Lion on a HD that doesn't presently have an OS on it?
PS- I have a disc for installing 10.5.6 (I think it is), but the machine hangs up if I try to boot off of this disc. That's why I needed to put this external HD into service.
Lion is not available on CD but can be purchased from the Apple Store on a USB slick for about $60 - $70. As far as putting Snow Leopard on an external, then you will need to make a bootable clone of the system using a program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! Using Time Machine, I believe, is not a bootable option.

  • How will mountain lion affect my office for mac 201111

How will mountain Lion affect my office for Mac 2011

I have been using Office for Mac 2011 for almost a year now and the issue started immediately after doing the upgrade.
When I start Outlook I can see that it takes 1 minute plus to set up the identity.
When it finally runs it is very slow and no fun to use. It seems that Outlook is using very few resources when I look at the activity monitor.
Overall it seems that my IMac has become slower than before upgrading to 10.8.
I do not have support with MSFT anymore and I do hope that somebody does report this issue to MSFT.
To me it seems to be very clear a result of the upgrade.
    Hope that helps.

  • Will installing lion os leave my mac as it is?

I have win7 pro on my personal macbook air courtesy of my job (and parralels6). Now I have left but don't have the license key so can't re install. Will installing lion leave my mac "as it is" so to speak.

no one knows, and if it was me, I'd just buy Windows 7 64-bit SP1 - probably only need home premium and system builder would set you back $99 and be legit and you can reinstall and have activation.
Will Lion change the partitioin tables and support some? probably. Every OS change has. Do some using Boot Camp have an issue? or SL owners that upgrade? probably 10% definitely will.
Just as 10.6.8 afftected Parallels 6 and required an update should be a clear sign, and warning.

Check iCal preferences, the Accounts Tab. You might have duplicate accounts.

  • Can't install Lion on my HD.  Says this disk is used for time machine backups

I just downloaded Lion to install on my 2008 macbook and i can't get past the window that asks me to select the disk where I want Lion installed.  It says my hard disk is used for time machine backups.  Any suggestions on how I can select my hd to install Lion?
    Thanks

That means there is a directory on your HD called something like backups. backupdb
It thinks you're using the drive for TM.  Delete this directory and it will then load.

  • Lion Update with Home folder on another disk

Currently with Snow Leopard I have my home directory on another disk.  If I update to Lion, will I have problems?  Or will it just work.  Or will I have to redo the moving of the home folder?

Should work. Do retain a bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of your current Snow Leopard installation to ensure you can work if the upgrade goes awry.

  • Will Mountain Lion affect my iLife installations?

I have a 2011 Intel iMac, which came with 10.6.7 disks.  Soon after getting it, I upgraded to Lion.  I am about to upgrade to Mountain Lion and I am concerned that my existing iLife suite may be affected by the upgrade.  If I have a problem, where do I go to re-install the iLife material?
    Thanks in advance.

If you have any problems with your iLife (you shouldn't) then you would use your install disk to re-install them.

  • How will installing Mavericks affect my Bootcamp

    Hi All,
I have mid 2009 MBP with 10.8.4 and I have a bootcamp installation with Windows 7.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Mavericks will affect the bootcamp installation. I do not want to have to reinstall windows and all my software.
    Thanks!
    Cheers.

Unless a problem occurs, it will remain as is. Back it up first.

  • Need to repartition to install Lion?

When I am propmted to select the disk to install Lion on, my startup disk has a message This Disk doesn't use the GUID Partition Table Scheme...
What? I need to repartition my mac to install Lion? I have lost my systems disk so now I am screwed? ***, does that mean I will also have to reinstall all of my existing applications if I figure out how to repartition my drive? Can I easily restore the apps, with all supporting files from my existing TimeMachine backup? This really has me upset, as I didn't see any mention of this on the Lion page on the Apple Web site, nor did I see it mentioned in the App store before buying

I ran Disk Utility Verify and found there where some errors to correct, so I did a repair. After the repair was successful I tried to install Lion again. Once again it's telling me to repartition my hard drive.
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Partition Map Scheme : Apple Partition Map
So it looks like Apple changed the Partition Map Scheme at some point from Apple Partition Map to GUID I guess a re partition is the ONLY way around this?

  • I'm having problems installing lion on my mac

When I try to install Lion on my iMac I get - This disk is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Use Disk Utility to enable journaling or reformat the desk

    3lii
Yes, I ran into the same problem.  Mine is a fairly old (3 or 4 years) Mac Book, and I'm guessing that it came this way from the factory.  I don't think I have ever reformatted this hard drive.
And when I opened up Disk Utility, it was not immediately clear how to enable the journaling, as Im used to selecting the pick list, and that was not budging.
But under File there is a Enable Journaling option, and if you select the partition in Disk Utility, that option should become black and selectable.
If you do that, then Journaling will start.
    Hope that helps.

  • Worth installing Lion on older MacBook?

Asking this question before installing Lion on my mom's MacBook. Since her trackpad is pre multiple touch, will any of those features even work? Will installing Lion just slow down or complicate her " works fine now" MacBook?

I have to agree, unless mum is needing, or wanting to upgrade leave the Macbook where it is, maybe mum would appreciate a nice lunch on you

  • Conflicting info on how to install Lion; which is correct?

Since there are no instructions for Lion, as has been stated here many times, which of the following procedures is the correct one for installation of Lion?
A: install Lion on top of Snow Leopard -  on an HD partition which contains SL or on top an external HD which contains SL.
    or
B: install Lion on an HD partition, an erased HD, or eternal HD - which does not contain SL.
Instructions are available on web sites that appear reputable for both procedures.

Both procedures work.  It depends your preference for an upgrade to your system or a fresh install to another disk/partition.

  • I can't Install Lion

I have been trying to install Lion but everytime I come to select my HD it won't highlight. I have checked permissions and even did disk repair Please help what am I doing wrong?
    Thank You

What version of OS X is installed on the hard drive? To upgrade to Lion you need to have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Your hard drive must have at least 9 GBs of free space to install Lion. The drive must be using the GUID partition scheme and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Use Disk Utility to verify your drive's configuration.
From where did you obtain the Lion installer you are using?
