HT3275 Red line in time machine back up

Can anyone confirm that a red or magenta coloured line on my time machine's time line, means it was a partially failed backup?
I can restore a file from the coloured backup. I've never Sean this before so I don't know if this is a new mountain lion feature.

  • HT3275 where did my time machine back up go to on new hard drive?

Hi, I recently had hard drive fail on my late 2006 iMac.  Had a new hard drive installed.  Restored my computer from the most recent time machine back up from my external drive, but can't find restored data on iMac.  Any ideas?
Went to the latest backup and hit 'restore' took about 2.5 hours for the data to transfer to new hard drive.  I can tell it's chewing up the new hard drive space but the data/profile from my old mac is nowhere to be found on the new hard drive.

It might have created a new user and loaded under that.. new user being the old user. But if you have issues do it again, only this time pick where the backup will go.

The other questions might also be relevant as a new hard disk will make the Mac appear to the TM backup as a new computer.

  • Red lines in Time Machine Backup timeline

Can someone tell me what a red line means in the timeline of a timemachine backup.
I have my fears it's an incomplete backup. I had a message on my mac the other day saying, "after a quality scan of my timemachine archive, it is suggested you create a whole new archive." It did and I lost all last months worth of archives. Sadly I needed a file from the day before the archive went.
Background on my archiveing, I'm using the Seagate Goflex Home, router connected hard drive. It's been a bit slow when doing searches, and viewing timemachine, its unbeleiveably slow.
Any input, appart from contacting Seagate, which I will be doing, is appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi Linc Davis,
I'm taking your advice and going back to basics. I think the problem is with Mountain Lion, backing up to a server over ethernet. and I'm giving up on Goflex. I may put the drive onto my Thunderbolt base reformat it and set my backups to there.
I'm curious to load ML Server onto my intel MacPro tower, but that is so much more server than I would ever need.
Looking forward to a OS X update.

Yes, assuming of course, that you have not specifically excluded Mail from backups.

    Ouch!
I'm assuming it was actually a restore?   If so, was it a full system restore, or selected items?
What version of OSX are you running?
And, just to be sure, are you backing-up to a TIme Capsule?  If not, what?

Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Insert the power cable back in the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the problem 90% of the time. If no luck, see #C12 in this great support document by Pondini:

  • SSD/HDD Time Machine Back Up Issue

I am having an issue with my 2010 13" MacBook Pro.
A few months ago I removed the optical drive, replaced it with the existing HDD, and then replaced the HDD with an SSD.
The SSD runs my OS (Mountain Lion 10.8.4) and Applications, while the HDD is where I store my Home Folder.
I did a Time Machine Back Up in March using a SeaGate external hard drive, with no issues.
Last week I updated the Time Machine Back Up using the same external hard drive, but this time something has gone wrong.
I am unable to move files within my system without Finder prompting me for a password.
I am unable to write to any external USB as I do not have 'permission to perform some actions'.
I am unable to connect to external servers via VPNs.
Finder does not open a new window when slected, I am forced to press 'Comman+N' every time.
    Numerous other issues.
I have read that it's an issue to do with ACL's, but since my Home Folder is not on my Startup Disk, there is no way for me to do this.
I am the only account on the computer, and both drives have 'Read & Write' permissions.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
Please feel free to ask for more details.
    Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • I can't access my files on my old Time Machine back up on my newer iMac

Okay, so I’m in a bit of a mess here.
I did have an old Macbook running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which died on me.
Luckily I managed to get a few Time Machine Back Ups  before I passed away . These back ups are
saved on a non-Apple external HD.
I recently inherited an iMac ( from 2009) which was also
running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I got very excited and hastily up graded the OS
    to Yosemite.
This iMac belonged to a friend, and I did not have the Snow
Leopard disc to perform a factory restore so I decided to simple delete their
account (System Admin account) from the iMac and keep the account they made for
me with the intentions of making that the main account.
After upgrading to Yosemite and deleting the System Admin account and making
myself the main account holder on the iMac I tried to access my files on my
external HD to manually move them onto the new iMac ( such as my photos,
videos, music, logic files, documents etc).
This is where I encountered my problem. I can no longer
access my folders on my external HD. It tells me I do not have permission to do
so, with a little red stop sign on front of all of these folders and files.
Is there any way I can fix this without having to buy a Snow Leopard disc? AND
IF I do perform a factory restore will my files in my HD still be locked?
    Thank you in advance.

I managed to get a few Time Machine Back Ups  before I passed away
I'm not sure whether a ghost can do this, but if you were still alive, you could do as follows.
First make sure you have read & write access to the folder you're trying to restore to. You should be able to see its contents in the Finder, and to move files in and out of it.
This is an exception to the rule that you should never make any changes to backup data. I've tested this procedure in OS X 10.8 only. It should work with later versions, but I don't know whether it works in earlier versions. Use it only for files that were backed up from your home folder, or a folder on another volume created by you, and would normally be writable by you. Do not touch backups of system or application files.
In the Finder (not in the time-travel view), navigate to the backup volume, then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb", and then to the snapshot you want to restore from. The snapshots are folders labeled with the date when they were created. Inside each of those folders is a file hierarchy like the one on the volume that was backed up. Descend through the hierarchy until you come to a folder named "Users," and inside that, a folder with your user name. The procedure will be different if you're trying to restore files on another volume.
Select the folder and open the Info dialog (command-I). Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, give your account Read & Write access. You may have to close the dialog and repeat this step in order for the change to show up. Then click the gear icon and select
              Apply to Enclosed Items
    from the popup menu.
Try the restore operation again, in the time-travel interface.

  • EHD recommendations for Time Machine back-up?

    Hi!
I need to buy a 2 or 3 TB EHD, preferably Firewire, for Time Machine back-ups of my iMac and EHD.  Can anyone tell me what's a good reliable brand at a reasonable price?  I've found several Western Digitals, Seagates, Iomegas, and LaCies, but none of them get stellar reviews.  Frankly, I'm afraid to trust any of them based on what I've read.
I currently have a 1 TB Seagate GoFlex Desktop that's a huge pain in the tush because it powers down regularly and then ejects from my desktop giving me an error message.  I get sick of this happening all day long, so now I don't trust Seagate at all.
I've had an internal WD hard drive fail after a year and a half in my previous iMac.  So, any suggestions? I want to pay $150 or less, so if I can only get a USB one for that, it's okay as long as it gets great recommendations.
I'd love to hear what others have had good luck with.
    TIA!

i have actually very good experiences with LaCie drives, particularly the d2 Quadra.
however, the Mercury Elite line by OWC is also recommended often.

I'm attempting to restore data from my old mbp to my new mbp 15". I hook up my time machine back-up from the old mbp and open migration asst. Get throught the windows till it attempts to find my time machine - just hangs up here.
Any ideas to try would be appreciated.
    John

No, both the backup and the new system are OSX10.6.
I'm afraid your solution doesn't work.  If I go through finder and open up the folders on the backup, and try, for example, to open my "Movies" folder (which is one I dearly hope to recover), I get a message that:
"The folder "Movies" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
I have tried Repair Permissions, but this doesn't help.  All of the important folders have a little red stop sign on them.
    Thanks though.

  • Time Machine Back Up Discrepancy...

    Hi All,
I have a June 2010 17" 2.66 i7 UMBP which has a 500GB internal HD. I recently purchased an external HD of the same capacity so I could keep a full back up of all my data.
The internal HD shows capacity of 499.76GB with 160.24GB free. After connecting the external HD to the UMBP & doing a back up via Time Machine, it shows capacity of 499.76GB with 166.99GB free. This means there is a difference of 6.75GB between my internal HD & the back up one which to me seems a large amount.
I can only assume that Time Machine has not backed up this missing 6.75GB of data & would like to know why this is so & what I can do to correct it. I have run Time Machine again a few times but the numbers still stay the same. Please can anyone else help me out here as at present, I just do not feel comfortable with they way things are & there is no way I can tell what data is missing on the back up HD - my luck is that it will probably be something(s) that might be important/critical in future!
    Many Thanks,
    Suave!

I read somewhere that one should ideally use Firewire Drives for mac back ups instead of USB 2.0 as the latter can cause some problems - any truth to this?
Some. FireWire 400 is somewhat faster (and F/W 800 much faster) than USB for sustained copying, but other than your first (full) backup or if you have to do a large or full restore, the speed isn't much of an issue.
Also the FireWire chipset does some of the work that has to be done by your Mac's CPU for USB, so if your CPU is maxed-out while a backup is running, it may make some difference.
And many folks think FireWire is more reliable; I'm inclined to agree, but don't know if that's really true.
Also, is it possible to simultaneously run both Time Machine & SuperDuper on one external back up drive
I'd avoid putting all your backup "eggs" in the same basket. Use two different drives, if at all possible. Otherwise when (not if) that drive fails, you may lose both sets of backups. And if you use a portable external for the SD backups, you can take it to a secure off-site location, such as your safe deposit box, workplace, or relative's house, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lighting strike on your power lines, etc.
If you do use the same drive for both, partition it, so each has it's own, exclusive space. See #5 or #6 in the FAQ if you need instructions.
And be sure the clone is excluded from TM backups, per #10 in the FAQ. Note you'll have to connect it to exclude it, and the exclusion won't appear while it's disconnected.
I think I read somewhere that the latest version of SD was "Compatible" with Time Machine?
That probably means SD can copy TM backups. CarbonCopyCloner (similar to SD) will copy them in "block copy" mode, but not "file copy" mode. But there's usually no reason to copy them, and other ways if you really want to.
Finally, my UMBP does have 4GB of RAM built in so I guess this "Sleep Image File" you mentioned would also then account for 4GB missing out of the 6.75GB amount on my Time Machine Back Up Drive but this then still leaves 2.75GB un accounted for - would things like system work files, most caches, logs etc (my trash is empty) really take up such a large amount of space?
Yes, easily. See the blue box in #11 of the FAQ for instructions on seeing the sizes of some of them (note that their sizes right now may not be the same as when you did the backups).

  • How do I restore iCal data from a Time Machine back-up?

Recently, all my iCal data disappeared, possibly due my efforts to unlink iCal from Google calendars.
I have read posts here, and have tried restoring ~/Library/Calendars in its entirety from a Time Machine back-up from about a week ago, where data definitely existed .... however, iCal remains empty. What am I doing wrong?

right click on the folder that shows with the red negative sign, and select to "get info".  In the long skinny window that appears, look in the "sharing and permissions" section.  In the "name" column, you should see your current user name.  Ensure the "privilege" is set to Read and Write.  If your user name is not in the name column, click the + sign, and add it, ensuring the privileges are set to Read and Write
