HT3275 Sparsebundle already in use?

Hi
I get the following warning
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “JAOC Wireless”.The backup disk image “/Volumes/James & Anna Treadwell's Ti/Anna’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” is already in use"
Can anyone tell me how to solve this?
Thanks James

The old backup never released the user properly.. so as far as the TC is concerned the user is still connected but the computer is trying to connect again and is refused as already connected. This is the most MOST common issue report here 10 times per day since Mountain Lion.. Please look at More Like This column on the right.
Simple solution is reboot the TC or the whole network, in correct order restart modem.. router /TC.. clients .. 2min gap.

  • TS1550 timemachine won't backup because sparsebundle already in use

timemachine stopped backing up because sparsebundle already in use how do i correct this?

I was having this same problem. I had turned on an old Macbook briefly and then turned it off. It must have been doing a backup at the time, because my newer Macbook Air could no longer do a backup because the sparsebundle was in use.
I followed crandyhill's suggestion above, and that solved everything. I had to open Airport Utility 5.6, click on manual setup, click on the disks tab, click on disconnect all users.
That solved the problem, and now my Air is doing regular backups again.

  • HT3275 Time Machine backup not completed  because "the backup disk image ....sparsebundle already in use"

Time Machine backup not completed because the "backup disk image"/Volumes/Data/MacBookAir.sparsebundle" is already in use. ??

Reboot the TC.. this is most common issue since Mountain Lion.

  • HT3275 getting already in use when backing up iMac to Time Machine

I'm getting the following error when trying to backup to my iMac to my Time Machine, and I think it might be related to the MacBook I purchased yesterday and connected it to the same Time Machine.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Martin’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
Any suggestions on how to determine the problem and resolution?
    Marty

A computer is holding open a connection which is stopping other computers from working.. or you have loaded the sparse bundle in finder and it is not being unmounted.
Go to the airport utility.. (5.6 if Lion) and manual setup.. disks page.. disconnect all users.. you will then be able to use the device.
I am assuming Time Machine means Time Capsule.. it is a common mistake.
There are a number of other issues that cause the problem but that is the most common.
    Some more info here.

  • Time machine error - backup fails due to sparsebundle already in use

Since upgrading, Time machine reports backup error:
    TIme Machine Error
The backup disk image ...sparsebundle is already in use.
    Any thoughts?

Thanks russ. After the initial upgrade to Mt Lion, no backups have been made. Every attempt reports the sparsebundle error. I recently updated to 10.8.1 and a whole new set of problems have shown up which is having me question the wisdom of continuing to invest in Apple product.
I have decided to pack it in with regard to the timecapsule product, as it is just too unreliable, and certainly not worth the continued time and effort it has been taking to try and get it to work. I have instead gone with an online backup service, Crashplan. I have the backup service I am seeing and I am no longer frittering away valuable time on something that ought to just work.
    Problem solved.

  • Time Machine Stopped working "sparsebundle already in use"

I have been using time machine for years on my MBP. It worked fine on 10/1/12 and then on 10/2, I starts searching and I get this message.
"Time Machine coundn't complete the backup to TC - the backup disk image/voluems/TM MBP TC BU-1/MBP BCC 13inch.sparsebundle is already in use"
TM MBP TC BU-1 is my designation...
I need help and really would appreciate any assistance.
    Skip

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
This simple reset will fix this issue 98% of the time. If you are in the unlucky 2% category, more help is here:

  • HT3275 What does sparsebundle already in use mean?

I have two Macbook pros in use on this time capsule.  I only get this message from one of the laptops.  Any suggestions?

It means that you need to power off the entire network....all devices....in any order that you wish.
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute or two by itself
Start the main router next, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up.
Check Time Machine again from both Macs

  • Error message when trying to back up from iMac to Time Machine says "sparsebundle already in use"

This is a screen shot of the error message I get.  I don't know what a "sparsebundle" is much less how to find and/or fix it! Can anyone help???

First, restart the iMac and your Time Capsule. In most of cases, this should solve the problem.
    If it doesn't work, read > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html
This is caused by a bug in Lion and Mountain Lion. This could also mean that you have another Mac and you are using the backup file of your iMac with that computer

My back up to time machine is not occuring and I am getting the message: sparsebundle already in use.  Any Clues?

This is the most common error on Mountain Lion.. at least 5 and up to 10 times a day.. I wish we had a proper method of referencing these errors.
    Simply reboot the TC.

  • Time Capsule "Is already in Use" error

My Time Machine app keeps coming back with the message "the backup on Time Capsule is already in use" and does not do new backups.  I'm operating Maverick's and using Time Capsule to back up both a laptop and MacMini.  I can get it to back up again only by unplugging the Time Capsule and plugging it back in.
    What do I do?

  • HT3275 I am getting a message that the backup failed because the "sparsebundle is already in use."  My husband and I both have MacBooks that back up to one time machine.  It is also our wifi router.  I do not understand this message

I am getting the message that "the backup disk image '/volumes//data/ ---'s MacBook pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  ---"s is my administrator designation.  I don't know what this means or what I should do.  My husband and I both use the same time machine with our MacBooks.  It is our router for our home network although for the most part our computers are separate.  We share an email site, and some files.  I am concerned that we are not backed up securely

Most common message in history of the TC.. something has failed to unmount.. Lion and esp. Mountain Lion are affected.
Simple way.. reboot the TC to lose the connections..
    Might take a network reboot.
That means restart the whole network from off.. start in order, modem.. router/TC.. clients. 2min gap between them.
But from 5.6 utility you can disconnnect all users.

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
