What does the message mean in Time Machine could not complete the backup. .sparsebundle in use. How do I fix this?

Restarting is restarting.
It will make no difference whether you do this using AirPort Utility or manually.
Open AirPort Utility 6.1
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Base Station menu item at the very top of the screen....in the line as the Apple icon....
Click Restart

Time machine not working says MacBook Pro.sparsebundle in use

TIme machine has'nt backed up for over a year. Don't know why it was brougt to my attention by my laptop today. I've tried to restart it ,but it says that the "disk is already in use" or "Heidi’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" in use or" try to eject disk image" which I have no clue how to do. Any suggestions?

Did you try to restart the Time Capsule?
Pull the power cord from the back ot the Time Capsule
Wait a few seconds
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes and try a backup. If that does not do it, then look here for more information:

"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “JAOC Wireless”.The backup disk image “/Volumes/James & Anna Treadwell's Ti/Anna’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” is already in use"
Can anyone tell me how to solve this?

The old backup never released the user properly.. so as far as the TC is concerned the user is still connected but the computer is trying to connect again and is refused as already connected. This is the most MOST common issue report here 10 times per day since Mountain Lion.. Please look at More Like This column on the right.
Simple solution is reboot the TC or the whole network, in correct order restart modem.. router /TC.. clients .. 2min gap.

HT3275 Sparsebundle is already in use

I am getting a message from the Time Capsule which says that the Sparsebundle is already in use so the backup cannot be completed. I have no idea what this means and can anyone provide me with a solution to this problem?

Look at More Like This .. on the right.. this is the most common error reported in this discussion area.. 5-6 times min per day..
Reboot the TC.. the dumb TC and the even dumber Mountain Lion have divorced.. you need to remarry them.
Reboot, = pull out the power.. count to 10.. plug the power back in.
You might need to reboot the network.. restart in order.. Modem.. TC.. clients ...=2min gap.

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and ever since, have been denied access to my Time Machine/Time Capsule backup - receiving the error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/xxxxxxxx's Time Cap/xxxxxxx MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.
Any suggestions????

Nothing on Pondini's C17 has worked for me.
Toggling the "enable file sharing" box and rebooting CPU & Time Capsule worked...for about 2-3 days. Then I get the same error. I gave been putting up with this for over a month. I have been to just about every forum that relates to the "sparsebundle already in use" error and no fix has worked for more than 48-72 hours.
Lion and Mt. Lion correlate with a lot of new issues for me. Getting desperate for some help.

My time machine won't back-up, but comes up with this error message:

Two Solutions for "sparse bundle already in use" Error
Simple solution (from Bob Timmons):
1. Make sure that no other Macs are backing up the Time Capsule at the time
2. Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
3. Count to ten
4. Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
If Simple doesn't work:
The Backup disk image ... sparsebundle ... is already in use.

It often happened with Lion as well..but was inconsistent.
Reboot the TC.. that will kick off whoever is still using it.. mostly yourself.

And bad luck with ML, you cannot use the better tool airport utility.. 5.6 you are stuck in toyland with v6.

Sparsebundle in use, error codes, Mountain Lion problems!

Ok ,Apple has another bad experience on its list. So called" smooth upgrade" to Mountain Lion, clearly breaks automated back up on Time Machine. I have rebooted, and still no sustained back up. What a farce. Apple is becoming the old Microsoft.. upgrades and breaking stuff... I am VERY disappointed... what is a formal Apple answer on this. Anyone left in Cupertino , who is not working in iOs , and actually cares about Mountain Lion actually supporting stuff their store sold me ? Tim Cook, you should now be allowing this. Stock price high, customer sat with Mountain Lion- low ?

OS X Server Time Machine: sparsebundle in use

Every few weeks, my 2013 Macmini with OS X Server tells one of the computers in my household (in this case a 2014 MacBook Air) the following:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Backups/Maurits.sparsebundle” is already in use.
Restarting usually resolves this issue, however I'd love to find out how to prevent this from happening in future. Any tips, anyone?

1. Open the Sharing preference pane and check that the computer name hasn't changed without your knowledge. For example, if the name was "X's iMac," it might now be "X's iMac (2)". In that case, restore the original name. You may have to click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane to unlock the settings. Test. If there's no improvement, or if the name had not been changed, continue.
2. Turn File Sharing off and then back on in the Sharing preference pane on the server.

Time Machine Error...sparsebundle in use

New Time Capsule; overnight backup successful; there's a disc image which when massaged appropirately generates a list of files that looks like my hard disc, who is named 'FMBP', probably standing for F's MacBookPro. So far, so good.
However, every hour it tells me "Time-Machine Error: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/FMBP.sparsebundle” is already in use." My impressions is that it is in use containing the files that it just backed up.
Speaking softly to, or kicking, the Time Capsule, does not help. Fumbling about clicking things labelled "Time ..." sometimes does something unexpected--after while--but does not generate a backup.
The instructions say to keep books 'n stuff off of the Time Capsule, lest they impede cooling. The cat points out that he is *not* a book, and if I'm not going to heat the house during this European cold spell, he should be allowed to sit on it. But surely OS X doesn't consider this 'using' the sparsebundle?
Anyone know how to 'unuse' sparsebundle?

Power down both your computer and the Time Capsule. Start both up again and try a backup.
Or, if you do not want to power down both devices and restart, you can open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup. Click the Disks icon, then click the Disks tab just below the icons. then click Disconnect All Users.
Then try another backup.

HT3275 Tried to use TM for the first time. Can't get it to scroll back at all - everything is grayed out.

I can scroll through the dates. They highlight and expand when I scroll through them; some gray (local) and some magenta (on my backup disk).
But nothing at all happens when I click, right click, or double click on ANY earlier date. The back/forward arrows in the lower right are also grayed out and without function.
I tried it with and without the backup disk attached (just trying to recover a file that I goofed up this morning, so last night is fine.)
I did NOT set any files to be excluded from backup, except for the backup disk itself. The backup disk is FAR away from being loaded; 43 GB out of 500.
Any ideas?

OK, I may have figured out my problem, since jakeloveslucy steered me to the Time Machine Preferences panel.
I use my MacBook for business, and I travel a lot, so I have FileVault turned on, and I make a fresh backup last thing before each trip, just in case the MacBook gets lost, damaged or stolen. (Duh.)
When I went to the "Select Drive" part of the Preferences Panel and selected my Firewire external drive, it said:
"FileVault is turned on for one or more user accounts on this computer. Time Machine backs up home folders protected by FileVault only when the users who own those home folders are logged out.
You can’t browse or restore individual items of a home folder encrypted by FileVault in the Time Machine backup. To restore all files and folders from this type of backup, start up from a Mac OS X Install disc and select “Restore System From Backup” from the “Utilities” menu in the Installer."
As I read that, since I'm the only user of this machine, I can only back up when I'm logged out (?!), and I can only recover with a full backup, not individual files.
So Time Machine is useless if you use FileVault to protect your data? Please, someone, confirm or deny!

HT3275 I am using an external drive for backup. I am now getting a message that the drive needs a disk repair, but when I run disk repair it just seems to freeze.

I am using an external drive for back up. Yesterday the backup failed and I received a message that the external drive( a passport drive) needed a 'disk repair", when I ran disk repair nothing happened it seemed to freeze. Suggestions? should i simply erase the external drive and start over-my computer is fine.

Get a different drive for backup.
In the meantime, once you are backed up some drive safe, then you can attempt to repair the backup drive using the repair the directory link.

HT3275 I recently used my time capsule to restore my old macbook onto my new macbook pro. Is there a way to undo this?

I recieved a new MacBook Pro for Christmas, and my Fiance purchased the new Microsoft office along with a few other things. This morning, I did a time capsule restore to get my documents and photos from my old Macbook, but I apparently did a full restore instead and ended up losing everything that was loaded onto my new computer in the process. Is there any way to undo a time capsule restore?

Did you do a backup of the new MBP before you restored? If not there is really no way to go backwards.. although you might find your old setup is still there.. create a new user, with full admin rights.. and then log out and log back in again.. if the new software has disappeared then the restore has completely overwritten the existing files.. you will need to start over.. fresh clean install of the OS and start again.
