HT3275 The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/.sparsebundle" is already in use.

Time Machine returns the above message when it fails to backup.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, restart your Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this will solve the problem.

ok, whats this new feature? I only have one.

This is what worked for me:
I reset my TC password to something else.  It was orignally the same as my admin password in the keychain.  I was reading the archives and ran across that.  I was also having a problem with the TC unmounting, and freezing when I would try to go in and brouse the different backups.  It would hang for about 15 minutes before I could get it to cacnel out, and the TC would no longer be mounted.  I couldn't believe that that was actually what was causing the problen, but it worked in my case.
Also, here is a link you guys might find helpful:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html
That puts a widget into your widget screen and you can see the TC logs as it tries to connect.  You might find it helpful for figuring out other issues
I also tried some of the things they wrote, like going into the TC, disconnecting the disk the putting it back - didn't work for me.  Reset TC and PC restart didn't help.  I was about to delete the sparsebundle file.  Glad I didn't.  Changin a passowrd is a lost easier.
Get that widget, thoug.  That's pretty cool!

  • HT3275 Time machine error, backup disk image "/volumes/data-1/.sparesbundle " already in use. I don;t know what this means, can someone help?

My Mac mini time capsule is showing an error Time machine error, backup disk image "/volumes/data-1/.sparesbundle " already in use. I don;t know what this means, can someone help?

I had a similar problem and I solved it as follows -
In Time Machine - > I deselected time capsule Data Disk as a destination.
Then I pulled the power plug on the Time Capsule, twiddled my thumbs for 15 secs, plugged the power back in.
Went back t Time Machine -> Re-Added the Time Capsule Data Disk as destination. And then tested by selecting Backup Now.
All went well and the backup picked up from before the problem.
BTW - I also have a USB drive connected to Time Capsule that is an alternate disk for Time Machine to backup.
In Mountain Lion the GUI lets you add more than one Time Machine backup destinations very easily so I think it a good idea to have redundancy.
    Hope this helps.

I recently obtained the 3 TB time capsule and after setting it up I have backed up using time machine and after a few days it gives this error.  I erased the drive and started over but the same thing happened.  I do not see the error message that I get listed in the articles.  Any ideas?

The best "articles" by far are those provided by Time Capsule and Time Machine guru Pondini.

  • HT3275 The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Lee Marriott's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

Hello, I get the above message when trying to back up to time machine.  It worked previously. I have done the usual things (switch off & on etc).  Any ideas?
    Thanks!

What router are you using? I got the same problem on and off when I was using a number of brands of WiFi routers. Until one day, I heard that non-Apple routers don't support Bonjour and it makes TM backup unstable.  I tried using an Airport router (Express, Extreme and Time Capsule), the backup became stable, in long term.
Is it the solution to your problem?  Give me feedback.

  • HT3275 The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Richard Teixeira's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

Installed another new Time Capusle, # Terabytes. Shut off wireless only connected to time capusle by cat. 5 cabel and to correct port . But darn sparsbundle error has surfaced. Had Apple support have me redo the entire back up which worked but after two days of working correctly this occurred again.
    Thoughts?

Thought I would update this myself. I bought the new 3 T erabyte product and after removing the western digital software for my extra back up disk for photos it worked. Key is do not run the smartware from western digital not needed in the mac environment and a problem when running the Time Capsule. So likely my previous 2 Terabyte Time capsule was not the issue. I think the smartware software took time to be known as an issue since I had contacted apple twice before  and only on the third time did someone suggest looking at this. Welcome to the evolving world of technology.
