HT3275 time machine states: the backup is too large for the backup disk?? not sure what to do here,

does anyone know what to do here?? time machine will not complete any backups- every time it attempts it states the backup disk is not large enough

If you decide to erase the Time Capsule and start over with a new set of Time Machine backups.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the window
Click Erase Disk
The Quick Erase option will only take a few minutes
Once the procedure is complete, close AirPort Utility
To start over with a new set of Time Machine backups.....
Click the Time Machine clock icon at the top of the Macs screen
Click Open Time Machine Preferences
Make sure Time Machine is On
Click Add or Remove Disks
Click your Time Capsule
Click Use Disk
A new backup should start in a few moments. Allow plenty of time for the first backup because the entire contents of your Mac will be copied over on this backup.
If you want to keep your current backup history and add a new Time Capsule, we'll need to understand how you have your Time Capsule set up in your network at the present time.
Is the Time Capsule now connected to a modem with a wired Ethernet cable?
What is the make and model number of the modem?
Does the Time Capsule provide your wireless network signal, or does another modem/router perform this service?

  • TIME MACHINE Error: This backupup is too large for the backup volume ...

    Hi Folks !
I have also my first problems with TM. It was running, the first time nicht&day to make the first backup and now seems the device to be full! This TimeMachineError was displayed:
This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 127.5 GB but only 46.5 are available. To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine.
    END OF ERROR Message
First thing > if I choose SystemPrefs/TM there is no chance to exclude file or folders the only dialog is for Volumes
    Any Idea ?
Are the TM Preferences corrupted or why I cannot choose to define my backup ?
    Ciao
    Massimo

When my Time Machine disk had only 50GB left, I got the message that it couldn't back up because it required 118GB to do so. Because there was, for some reason, only one day backed up, I deleted the backup files to start fresh. Now I am getting the message:
"This backup too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 1056.6 GB but only 929.4 GB are available."
Well, the backup only require 118GB a little while ago, and the initial full backup that I deleted was 880 GB. Nothing has been added to the startup disk, and a 400GB disk has been excluded to try to make this work, so this message can't be right.
How do I make this work? Do I have to keep reinstalling Time Machine every time I want to backup?

  • Time Machine completes once, then says "too large for backup disk"

    Hello all,
I'm a very experienced, certified Apple tech, with over 15 years' experience working on Macs, having used them since 1984.
    Client's iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
Mac OS X 10.6.8, fully up to date
    12 GB RAM
History: Internal 1 TB hard drive was failing. Mac out of warranty, so HDD was replaced with a new 1 TB hard drive.
Data was cloned from old drive using SuperDuper!
Now, Time Machine will not back up more than once.
    The error reads:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup.
This backup is too large for the backup disk.
The backup requires 728.32 GB but only 568.57 GB are available."
The backup drive is 1.5x the size of the internal drive. There are no other hard drives attached that would be included in the backup.
    Internal hard drive: 1 TB
    Available: 392 GB
    Used 608 GB
    External backup drive 1.5 TB
    Available 568.57 GB
    Used 931.39 GB
I have tried many steps from the pondini.org site and other blogs and internet forums, including this one.
External hard drive has been reformatted/erased several times.
We have disabled  indexing, deleted the Spotlight index, and re-enabled indexing.
I can't determine why the Time Machine backup is 1.5 times the size of the data on the internal boot drive.
This was never a problem before the internal hard drive was replaced, so I think it's related to that.
I had the client install BackupLoupe. Her computer is not at our office, but I can get more info from her if needed.
If there's something obvious I'm missing, let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

    Hello KenyaJohn,
You may benefit from disabling Show on Lock Screen for Messages and Mail in Settings -> Notification Center -> Mail/Messages.
You can disable Show on Lock Screen for a particular app in Settings > Notification Center > <app name>.

Sorry - we can not see you
what do you have? Version of iPhoto? Of the OS? How is the passport connected to your Mac? What format is the passport (for the iphoto library it must be Mac OS extended (journaled)  )?  The iPhoto library is not and can not be on the cloud (maybe later with the Photos Application)

  • HT3275 TIME MACHINE ERROR: The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Sean McGuire's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 1).

I can select a disk (Time Capsule) and initiate the backup.  It only "waits to back up" then "making backup disk available" and remains frozen there.  I tried to update the software a while back and was unsuccessful, I think that may be the issue.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  This is the error message I receive.

  • Time machine says back up is too large.

I am trying to back up my iMac with Time Machine and a connected G-Drive.  I have deleted many old files and in Finder I have 320 GB available.  Still, time machine says: "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 210.66 GB but only 9.15 GB are available."  What to do?

My computer drive is also 250G total. It says that I have about 20G available.
Time machine says my current back up is 260G??? I thought that 1. time machine overwrites old backups as the hard drive fills up. 2. I no longer see the history of when I first started theTM back ups. I only see one back up now and I can no longer use TM due to the error message?
It sounds like you internal drive has about 230 GB of data and the entire TM drive is 250GB? that will never work. TM needs some head room to operate. I don't know how much exactly but I know that it does.
also, i suspect that 250Gb is the advertised decimal GB capacity. the actual binary capacity is smaller and is probably around 230GB or less.
You definitely need a bigger TM drive.

  • Time Machine Setup "Choose Backup Disk" Won't Recognize ANY Disks

I'm trying to configure Time Machine for the first time. I open Time Machine preferences and slide the slider to ON. Because no backup disk is selected, a window pops up where possible drives are to be listed. The Time Machine instructions say this...
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Time Machine.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Slide the switch to On if Time Machine is off.
Click Choose Backup Disk (or click Change Disk if you have already set up Time Machine).
Step 4 - Choose a disk where backups will be stored, and click “Use for Backup.”
You see a list of every available disk that can be used to store backups, including internal hard disks (except for your startup disk), most external disks, and any Time Capsule devices set up for use with Time Machine. If you have partitioned a disk, the partitions are listed.
I do not see a list of any available disks, not even the internal hard disk on my computer. I only have two button options--Setup Time Capsule or Cancel.
When I click Setup Time Capsule it opens my Airport Utility and takes me to the setup page for my Airport Extreme. Why? My Airport Extreme Base Station is already setup and running. How do I get drives to appear in the Time Machine setup window?

My two external drives are connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station via USB. My tower is connected to the Base Station via Ethernet. My internal drive is, of course, internal and is supposed to show and it's not. Here's their formats...
Internal Drive - Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
My two external drives don't seem to show up in Disk Utility. In Finder the format shows as...
External Drive 1 - SMB (FAT)
External Drive 2 - Has two partitions (rather, 1 partition and two volumes) both of which are listed as Apple Share.
I just re-read your note. I connected External Drive 1 directly to the tower and Time Machine spoke right up and asked if I wanted to use the drive for backing up. The format then appeared in Disk Utility as MS-DOS (FAT32).
    - It would appear the drive must be directly connected to the tower to be used by Time Machine. Is this true?
    - Why does my internal drive not appear as the Apple Help file says it should?
    - I may have to purchase another external hard drive. If so, is there a particular format it should be in for use with Time Machine?
    Thanks...

  • Time Machine cannot access backup disk

How can I fix this issue with Time Machine?:
    "The+backup+disk+image+“%2FVolumes%2FGoFlex+Home+Backup%2FJohn’s+MacBook+Air.spa rsebundle”+could+not+be+accessed+(error+(null))."

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

  • How do i change so that the HDD currently being used for Time machine becomes the startup disk?

    Hi there,
I bought this mac with 2 HDD's (a 250gb and a 2tb). When I booted up the mac for the first time, I accidently chose the 2tb HDD as the time machine.......thing so this makes the 250gb HDD the startup drive. This is useless for me as I only want the documents to be backed up so I want the 250gb drive to be the time machine and the 2tb to be the startup drive.
I've tried opening the Mac OS X installer and it doesn't allow me to set the start up drive to the 2tb drive as it isbeing used for the time machine and i've already turned it off within the system preferences.
Please tell me it's possible to switch them around other-wise this will just be a wasted purchase completely. I already accept the fact that I may have to wipe the drive and re-install everything as well as the documents etc but as long as I get some sort of solution that will allow me to do this.
Can someone please help me with this!
    Regards
    Eric Wade

Copy off everything you want, restart from the iMac's original disk, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, wipe drives as desired, and then install the OS.
