HT3275 "Unable to find backup disk" issue

I use an external USB device for Time Machine backups, and, until now, it has always worked perfectly.  However, today when I tried to backup my files, Time Machine sent me the message "Unable to find backup disk."
I went to the "Help" section of Time Machine and was advised to open "Time Machine Preferences," then open "Select Disk" and choose my external device from the list of "back-up disks" that would be shown.  This apparently would "re-set" my external back-up device and allow backing up to resume.
However, when I went to the "Select Disk" section of "Time Machine Preferences,"  my external device was not even listed as a choice (i.e., I can't select the device as the place for backing-up, because it's not listed).
NOTE:  My external device is (a) connected to my laptop (via USB port), (b) turned on & (c) not defective.  My wireless network is working just fine.
Also, when I tested Apple's back-up drive "re-set" advice by connecting a tiny thumb-drive to my laptop (via the same USB port I had used with my external device), the "Select Disk" section of "Time Machine Preferences" listed the thumb-drive as a potential back-up disk that could be selected.
So, why can't my external USB device be "found" by Time Machine (while my thumb-drive can)?  What can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks!

Sounds like either the backups are corrupted, or there's a problem with the drive, port, or cable.
Try to repair the backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

  • Can't install Mavericks, damaged disk, restore from Time Machine, unable to find destination disk. What to do?

After downloading Mavericks, tried installing, it told me that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. My only option was the Mac HD icon with a "?" on top of it, unable to verify disk. With the "continue" button grayed out, I hit the back button a few times in an attempt to start over. I went back to the install page and it started installing. 40 minutes later it was up and running. Every thing seemed fine. I tried opening GarageBand, I got the spinning wheel. Then a prompt page asking me to select a language. I selected English and the computer shutdown. It being late and I being frustrated, I decided to wait until morning.
On startup I got the message that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. This time there was no icon or anything to choose from.
I'm wondering if I need to use my original Mac mini, Mac OS X install DVD, or is it time for a trip to the Apple store.
    Ideas and options welcome.

It sounds as if your hard drive may have failed or may be failing. Boot your computer from the REcovery Disk by holding down the Command+R keys during the boot. From the Recovery drive you can run Disk Utility.  Once in DU select your hard drive then run "Repair Disk".
If errors are found and repaired run Repair Disk a second time.
If errors are found and not repaired you are going to need a more robust volume repair utiity such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius and an external drive to boot from to run the repairs or...

Just installed a new Airport Extreme.
    My wifi is working normally.
But, I cannot "see" the Time Capsule as backup disk.
Everytime I try to start the backup, It tells me to configure a new Time Capsule.
Tryed to reset and everytihing, but nothing so far.
    Need help.
    Tks

    I don't follow ..
Just installed a new Airport Extreme.
Do you have a time capsule.. ?? Extreme and Time Capsule are different units.
There is no hard disk in a AE. You can use a USB on the current Gen6 AE for TM backups but none of the previous generation are actually reliable doing TM backups.
Everytime I try to start the backup, It tells me to configure a new Time Capsule.
Again because you do not have a Time Capsule if you are using an Airport Extreme.

  • HT3275 What does "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/apple's iMac.sparsebundle" is already in use.

My back up is no longer working.  The errors that come up are "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/apple’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use."  Does anyone know what this means?

It means that there are bugs in the operating system.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Report back if you need further assistance

My Mac mini time capsule is showing an error Time machine error, backup disk image "/volumes/data-1/.sparesbundle " already in use. I don;t know what this means, can someone help?

I had a similar problem and I solved it as follows -
In Time Machine - > I deselected time capsule Data Disk as a destination.
Then I pulled the power plug on the Time Capsule, twiddled my thumbs for 15 secs, plugged the power back in.
Went back t Time Machine -> Re-Added the Time Capsule Data Disk as destination. And then tested by selecting Backup Now.
All went well and the backup picked up from before the problem.
BTW - I also have a USB drive connected to Time Capsule that is an alternate disk for Time Machine to backup.
In Mountain Lion the GUI lets you add more than one Time Machine backup destinations very easily so I think it a good idea to have redundancy.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine can no longer find backup disk

I have a USB drive hooked up to my airport extreme that I used to use as a TimeMachine backup for my MacBook Pro. I use another external drive to back up my iMac, but it is connected to the iMac directly. The drive on the airport extreme used to back up my MacBook Pro flawlessly. Suddenly, about a week ago it stopped recognizing it as a TimeMachine back up drive. I can access the drive via both my iMac and MacBook Pro and I have a small data base that I use on both Macs there as well as the "sparse bundle.." back up for the MacBook Pro. I go to TimeMachine preferences and "select backup drive". Highlighted is the external drive on the airport extreme. Underneath on the list is the red "do not enter" sign and NONE. But only the drive is in blue. I select and it begins a countdown to back up on the drive (even says the name of the drive name and location "airport extreme".) But when the back up begins it quits and gives me the message "Back Up disk not available". But I can go to that drive and open up the small data base that is there, immediately.
I have now deleted the sparsebundle from that drive and tried to start over, but for some reason it can't use that drive for back ups. What could have changed to make this drive "not available" as a TimeMachine back up?

    Ron Bird wrote:
Sorry to have ended so quickly. After doing the whole repair thing
Try repairing the +sparse bundle,+ not just the partition. With the disk connected directly, drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility's sidebar, select it, and click +*Repair Disk.+*
and re-connecting the drive and going to TM I did select the drive (after opening it up and it appearing in the list) and then it went to the 120 second countdown BUT after the time expired I got the same message that the drive was unavailable.
Are you connected via Ethernet or WIFI? If WIFI, try Ethernet. If that works, you've probably got a WIFI problem.
If it happens over Ethernet, the combination of the problems repairing it, and not being able to connect to the sparse bundle once it was repaired, may mean the drive is failing. How old is it?
And, don't forget, backing-up this way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* I've had exactly the same scenario occur; in my case it worked fine for about 3 months, then every few days the sparse bundle would come up corrupted. On occasion Disk Utility could fix it, on occasion Disk Warrior could, but usually I had to erase and start over. That went on for a couple of weeks; since then it's been fine, although very slow on occasion. That's all with the same hardware in the same locations, and a very good WIFI connection. If you browse the +Airport Extreme+ forum (in the +Digital Life+ section at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1135 , you'll see a number of similar stories.
That's why I don't recommend it, and keep secondary backups as well.

  • HT3275 "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."

I'm running Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro with Time Machine backing up to an exterior volume composed of four 3TB drives.  System and TM have been working fine until now.  Disk Utility reports the backup drive is fine.  I've restarted and run TM again and keep having the same problem.  I recently swapped out one of my internal drives for a larger drive, which is working fine but that is when TM started acting up.  Any suggestions?

    http://pondini.org/TM/B5.html
Pondini's site was out of action but back up now.
A new internal drive has a new UUID.. and should be treated by TM as a new computer. But you can inherit the old backup.. if you have restored to the drive then it hopefully will work but as you say take many hours.
I think it is better to start over.. but up to you.

  • Clone from hot backup failing with ORA-19870, 19505 unable to find backup

Ok, the steps I am taking worked previously, the only thing that I know changed was the underlying file system and I am perplexed but then again I am not the most experienced dba so please forgive if I miss something obvious.
My steps are: create backup using:
    backup database tag= tagname format '/archive/stage/DBNAME/%U';
    backup archivelog all format '/archive/stage/DBNAME/%U';
    backup current controlfile '/archive/stage/DBNAME/%U';
Then on the new server, I copy the files over to the new server and:
    connect target username@prod
    connect auxillary
    set until time
    duplicate target database to "PRODSBX"
    etc...
The problem is the duplicate is not looking at my '/archive/stage/DBNAME' directory for the backup. It's looking in the normal backup directory on that prod box that it can't connect to... can anyone give me clues as to what I should be looking at to figure out why? I looked at file permissions in case it couldn't access this directory, I looked at id, group etc... and I am not seeing anything. These exact same scripts worked before... the only thing I have edited is the set until time so I just can't figure out why it's not going to the /archive/stage.
Any light shed in my general direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Va.

I have no way to copy the output of the files as this is on a closed network. If there is any particular information you are looking for I'd be happy to post it.
The restore is looking for the default backup location as specified in my rman configuration but in my backup script, I specify a different location that I do the hot backup to. The first time it took this location and successfully cloned to the new server and now it seems to be ignoring it. I am not sure why, any suggestions in what I should look at, if this is a possible configuration issue on my clone server or on my primary?
    Thanks,
    Va.

  • HT201250 Time Machine backup disk not found

I recently reconfigured my external disks, creating a 500GB oartition for Time Machine backup. thefirst time I set up Time machine to use that partition all went well. Seconed time it failed "cannot find backup disk."
This is a 24 inch, mid 2007 iMac OS X 10.8.2.  I am using two external backup drives - 1T LaCie with 4 partitions and a BlackX removable adaptor with a WD 1T drive plugged in.  Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  In the view below the top "Time Machine" drive at the top is a duplicate of the last drive in the list.
If I select the top drive - I have the option to "Remove Disk" - NOT to "Use this Disk." So I have to select the bottom "Time Machine" drive.  The backup will then run once but on the second try I get "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Machine". Unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating backup folder."  Whether I remove the top listed disk or not doesn't seem to matter, sometimes it finds the drive, sometimes not!
The BlackX is a USB connected directly to the iMac.  The other partition on that drive contains movie clips and they run fine.
There is a backup folder on the Time Machine drive with six backups - however I have to "reset" the Time Machine each time to get it to backup.  It craps out on the second try every time.  Got me buffaloed!  Any ideas?

Assuming you have nothing on your Time Machine volume that you need, erase that volume and Verify it from Disk Utilities. Repair if necessary. Then, go into the Time Machine Preferences and Remove the selected drive to use. Now, reselect it and try a backup.

  • Internal Time Machine "looking for backup disk" (not time capsule)

    Hello,
I have the infamous "looking for backup disk" issue. My Time Machine drive is an internal drive, NOT a time capsule. It is mounted and visible, and the backups show up on it in the Finder. When I select to enter the Time Machine "starfield" UI, all my previous backups are browsable. But when it comes time to actually back up... it just says "looking for backup disk" forever. I've tried leaving it like that for something like 40 minutes, no joy. This is not a huge disk, there are about 700 GB of backups on it. The HDD activity light on my computer is NOT showing any activity when I am idling but it is "looking for backup disk," so I don't think it's scanning the drive or anything.
I have tried turning TM off and on, removing the drive and re-selecting it, unmounting it and remounting it, deleting the TM preference plist file from the library, rebooting, and all manner of combinations thereof. Nothing seems to work.
Anyone have any advice? This is on OS X 10.8.2 by the way. The TM backup worked fine through 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 with no problems until now. I don't recall doing anything specific to mess up TM or the disks in any way, although I may have turned TM during a reboot cycle prior to this happening (don't recall if this is actually the case, but in any case it shouldn't have caused such an error, no?).
    Thanks in advance,
    —Gabriel

[Just a note, TM only works on OS X Journaled drives (i.e. HFS+ drives). TM does not back up your FAT drive.]
    Isaac:
If you unloaded the NTFS and FAT kexts, your TM backups might (might!) work again, but of course in that case you would not be able to see your FAT or NTFS drives in OS X, and if you removed the FAT kext then a lot of USB keys would be unreadable in OS X - not a good solution.
The kexts are specific to OS X, so removing them should not affect Windows... but may affect boot camp, I don't know how boot camp is programmed (which would be a problem). Luckily if your Windows drive became inaccessable from boot camp with removed kexts, it should be easy enough to simply boot back into OS X, restore the kexts, and then Windows should work again.
I would recommend not mixing partition types on drives with shared OSX/Win functions, it seems to "tempt fate" as it were with possible errors. I don't know what has precipitated this error in your case, if it was the MSE or disk error or something else, and unfortunately I don't have a real fix to offer beyond trying things with the kexts removed and seeing if they work.
NOTE THAT THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK, messing with kexts is not a very recommendable practice since these files enable core functionality in the OS. Make a backup before if you can, and consider your options carefully. In OS X, navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and you'll find a bunch kext files. The two you need are msdosfs.kext and ntfs.kext. Copy ntfs.kext into a backup folder (e.g., on your desktop). Delete the original ntfs.kext from the S/L/E folder. Reboot and see if you can still access windows. If so, reboot into OS X and see if Time Machine works again. If you're good on both those points, then consider going without ntfs.kext on a permanent basis – it is rare that you need to read an NTFS drive while in OS X. On the other hand, if this does not fix your problem, you may try restoring ntfs.kext, and backing up / deleting msdosfs.kext to see if THAT is the culprit. Unfortunately, if msdosfs.kext is causing the TM error, you're kind of out of luck, since going without FAT access will be pretty annoying any time you need to use a drive to swap files between Windows and Mac (using a USB key).
Ultimately I don't have a solution, as I have noted, so much as I've narrowed down where the error is occuring in some peoples' cases (like my own). Good luck!

  • Having registry issues need to know what the backup disk contains PLEASE! Or any suggestions :) :)

So here's my issue I have really FUBAR'ed my laptop LOL. Basically my registry is gone kinda. I can't access any of the vital win7 programs ie Computer, IE9, Control Panel, any folders (documents, pictures music...) stuff like that. Now here's the kicker I can access my games from the start menu and some desktop shortcuts work. All the minor junk like calculator, notepad, wordpad etc. work. Hell I can even do remote desktop (weird I know). My net connection says that I am not connected however I actually am because I can access all of my files via my Desktop.
So here's what actually caused this. I downloaded and ran Cleanmypc registry cleaner ( I knew better shouldn't have touched this just a (insert choice word/s) to happen). I thought I was actually going to make it run faster after all the good reviews I poured over and didn't find any bad reviews. Before I even ran this I scanned it with Avast, Spybot, and Addaware just to make sure it wasn't full of crap!! Didnt find anything, so I continued. Ran it found several problems according to the product. Followed the instructions to the T. Let the program do a registry backup for me (I know what you are thinking I should have manually done it). My mistake. So I hit the inevitable fix all issues button and low and behold it ruined everything. I was unable to access anything and I mean everything. All my file associations where gone just like that period!!
I was even unable to run mypccleaner again. luckily though I was able to run the program via the run command kinda. The only part of the program that would actually work was the restore registry before the fix by using the backup file that the program made for me. Yea well that was a flipping joke it made it WORSE!
After all that and a few hours pouring over uneventful fixes I finally downloaded all the default registry values from Microsoft that they had for Win7 from another computer and luckily I was able to get them transferred over to my laptop (thank God for networks) But none of these files had any association so I had to manually add a few using CMD from a post that was buried in another forum until I could make a file association to regedit. Then I added the rest. So now my laptop is kinda working. I have access like I stated above but its only the minor stuff I have access to. I can't run any major program or it says no such interface supported.
So long story short I found an article here Repair Install that should work without losing everything (at this time I can't afford to do that have a DJ gig Saturday) but it says I have to have an original Win7 disk to be able to do it. So my question is if I order the backup disk from here will that disk allow me to be able to do this or am I going to have to find other means.
In all honesty if it wont that's fine I will take it and pay the money to get it repaired (don't really want to do that) as I need it in a couple days and the soonest I could have it back is two weeks. Yes I have a backup laptop but that one is down as well bad HDD LOL have to replace. Wishing now that I would have spent the money on that 1TB external HDD that I was looking at
So again my questions are. Is the backup disk that I can order from here going to be able to solve my problem and if not does anyone here have any solutions. I run VDJ Pro but it says that my soundcard isn't installed or my drivers are bad. So I tried to reinstall the drivers but windows can't find the installshield file to be able to do that. Or is there a backdoor to being able to run WMP (it's an option not a very good one but an option if I can get it to work).
Thank you for taking your time in reading this. I know it's long but I just wanted to get all the info out to anyone that might be able to help me resolve this. So any comment is appreciated again THANK YOU!! I am desperate please!
I am running Win7 Home Premium on a Toshiba L555D-S70005

I can't lose anything from my laptop. Never backed it up. .. ..pay the money for them to reinstall and back everything up for me.
No need for that, Richard. You can rescue all your important files by the following method. And then restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
    1. Prepare a thumb drive formatted in FAT32. It doesn't need to be large. This stuff only occupies 130 MB on mine.
    2. Download UNetbootin to create the thumb drive.
    3. Download a Puppy Linux .iso file for the operating system.
    4. Run Unetbootin-win-xxx.exe and point it to the Lupu-xxx.iso file to create a bootable drive.
    5. When you power on your computer, hold down the F12 key. That should give you the opportunity to choose the boot drive.
    6. For some tips, scroll down to the following sections at this web page.
