HT3275 What do i do when, having reconnected my Time-Machine Backup disk, i'm told that there is not sufficient space to do a backup ? it seems somehow that my previous backup was "closed" and i cannot continue using it, so Time machine appears to start a

I use an external 500 GB WD hard drive for my Time-Machine backup.
Sometimes - several times - after i've disconnected the drive to go travelling, when i reconnect the external drive, Time Machine tries to resume but tells me there is not enough space on the drive, and to chose a bigger disk.
It is as if the previous backup file is "closed' and cannot be written to again.
The only fix i can find is to erase, start again from scratch and do a full backup from scratch - which totally defeats the purpose of Time Machine.
I've tried repairing the disk, nothing appears to allow the previous backup to be continued.
Suggestions please ??

Currently, having once again yesterday flattened and restarted my T-M from scratch i probably overwrote all the backups since the last time i had to do that - and as long as i don't disconnect my external backup drive it seems OK now.
I'm a bit paranoid as i use my MBP both as my Mac, but also as my Virtual PC so i have a lot of technical and commercial data which i need to keep properly backed up.
Is it possible when i've ejected my TM backup disck, gone travelling, and then reconnected it some days later - that i am causing a new backup to start by hitting the 'Backup Now' command on the menu bar.... should i let TM pickup by itself automaticvally without porvoking a Backup Now command ?
Thanks in advance for any futher advice

i have a ipod touch and i got it for christmas with an iTunes card .the problem is that i downloaded videos and now it said that there is not enough space and i only downloaded 8 and now 5 don't download how do i erase them.can  get my money back

Whatever you read about iTunes is wrong unless you're actually referring to feature movies, not videos. Videos, apps, music and iBooks you can re-download:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
Download to your computer and then sync to your iPod touch whatever will fit.
And no, I can't say with certainty that they won't give you a refund, but it's unlikely. The most probable outcome, if you do indeed mean movies, not TV shows or other videos, is that they would set up an additional download. For other content they'll probably just direct you to the same instructions on re-downloading I just posted.

  • What can i do to get my ipod to update? Says that there is not enough space to download these items. Please delete some photos or videos. There are none on it.

    Help please!

Accidentally hit "helpful answer" on my own post, how do you undo?!
Anyways, I cleared more space by simply deleting videos on my iPhone.
It appears that there are definitely cases where the iPhone requires MORE than 2x the amount of space the app takes up in order to install the app.
It would be useful if Apple could make this requirement a bit clearer.

  • HT1766 When syncing, iTunes tells me that there is not enough space on my iPhone, even though there are 20GB of free space

There obviously IS enough free space, yet somehow iTunes seems to think there isn't.
What do I do? Did somebody have this problem before?
Tried restarting, switching on and off, nothing worked

    Unfortunately that's not the case.
I didn't confuse it with my iCloud storage. I'm talking specifically about the storage ON my iPhone.
When syncing the diagram on the bottom of the page (you know the coloured one that gives you Audio, Photos, Apps...) shows me that I have more than 20GB of remaining space.
And I'm trying to get audio on it which is definitely LESS than 20 GB. So it should fit.
But it still gives me the error message that the data I'm trying to sync to my phone is too large

  • What to do when you want to restor your ipod but it says there is not enough space to do it ?

My problem is that i have 21go of the section "others" on my iPod 5. So, I went on internet to find what is the solution (or what to delete to get more space on my iPod), and I found that it was a problem to have more than 5go of "others", and that the only solution was to restor it. My second problem is that I can't even restor it because it says there is not enough space to do it. So, I deleted stuff and there is now 4.73go of free space. But it still says that there is not enough space to restor it !!!

No, it says that i don't have enough space on my iPod ;$ But it's ok now, I went on youtube to find a way to restore an iPod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzyy4puapig). But thank you for trying to help me !!

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/FW1000HD/MacBkPro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 1).

I added an 1TB external usb hard disk to my time capsule as the existing 1TB hard disk is nearly full (less than 12 GB left on time capslule hard disk).  Initially, I connected external hard disk to my MacBookPro (late 2009 Intel machine) and erased most of the data on that disk. I added the disk to time machine's backup disks thru the time machine window in system preferences. Now I supposedly have both hard disks, the one in the time capsule and the new usb hard disk, available for backup. Time Machine immediately backed up my system, which consists of my MacBookPro hard disk (about 96.8 GB) and another external usb hard disk which contains about 500 GB of data, on the new extenal hard disk.Time Machine did not attempt to create a new sparsebundle at that time on my new external backup disk.  This backup was done while the new backup hard disk and the data disk were both connected to the MacBookPro and the Time Capsule was directly connected by ethernet cable to the MacBookPro. I then disconnected the two hard disks from the MacBookPro and reconnected them both via usb to the Time Capsule. Now, hopefully, the external usb backup hard disk can be written to via wi-fi thru the usb connection thru the Time Capsule? I successfully use the data disk (which contains my full iTunes Library) from the Time Capsule all of the time.
Time Machine has continued to backup small backups of a few MB to a few hundred MB to the  Time Capsule hard disk. Time Machine has attempted at least twice that I know of to set up a sparsebundle on the new external backup hard disk, but it has failed both times with the following message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/FW1000HD/MacBkPro.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 1).
Before the two attempts that I witnessed to create the sparsebundle on the new backup drive, I got the following message:
The identity of the backup disk “FW1000HD” has changed since the previous backup.
I did not change the identity of the FW1000HD, but it originally was connected directly to the MacBookPro when it was backed up. Could this be the problem? And if so, how do I fix this, so I can use this hard disk for back up from the wi-fi connection to Time Capsule?
    Gary Olson

I'm not sure this is at the root of your problems, but Time Machine manages backups to a local disk differently than to a network disk.  The Time Machine backup written to the disk while it was connected locally can't be used for network backups.

  • After accepting update to my time capsule, I can no longer complete a backup because there is not enough space.  I tried deleting old files, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any advice:

My time capsule was updated through an apple download update on June 16, and now I cannot back up my computer.  The message is that there is not enough space.  I tried deleting my files, but it didn't help.  any suggestions?

How much space is there according to airport utility?
TM can be fussy.. Do a factory reset of the TC and give it a new name. Use short, no space and pure alphanumeric type names..
And reset TM. See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Then set up TM again to the TC and see if TM will start .. the reset will not hurt the backup and TM can still find it on a renamed TC.

  • HT1766 Restore backup function says there is not enough space on my iPhone to restore backup. How do I fix this/how do I know how much space I need on my iPhone?

My family member's iPhone recently erased all of its contact information, with no action taken by my family member. She is trying to use the restore backup function to recover her contacts.
The restore backup functions says that there is not enough space on my iPhone to restore backup. How do I fix this/how do I know how much space I need to complete this backup?
We have removed the majority of pictures from her phone, and she has 4.1 GB of memory free.
    Thank you!

You need at least as much space as you have used on the iPod. Could be as much as 64 GB but is probably much less.
Find a way to delete what you do not need on the computer. Start by emptying the Recycle Bin.

If getResultSet() returns a non-null, and the first thing yo do afterwards is call rs.next()

My iPad says that she is busy and is unable to accept my request even when everything is closed and nothing is being used. similar to what is happening to me....the difference is, after restoring itunes detect ipod and ask to restore again and again....
I know it may look kinda stupid but: just leave the ipod there for about 2 minutes, that's about the time my itunes is taking to detect my ipod...if it doesn't work, try connecting ur ipod to other computer with itunes (no need to sync, just to check if itunes will recognize) to check if the problem is with the ipod or with the itunes and/or computer.

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

I recently tried to look up my pictures on my time machine back up on an external hard drive. As soon as I try to open it I get the following message.
"The iPhoto library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library. Reopen iPhoto with the Option key held down to choose another library."
I have tried holding down the option key but still couldn't few the photos.
I want to know if there is anyway I can actually view these photos. I have over 85gbs of photos on the hard drive.  I have tried googling and looking at pervious forums with the same problem but nothing is working.

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
    HELP!!

    Try repair the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
