HT3275 Why does Time Machine say it's unable to back up because the disk is full -- even tho it's supposed to delete the oldest backups when that happens?
I'm running OS 10.6.8 on an imac from around 2011. I back up with Time Machine to an external hard drive that has about 500 GB. Until now, I've had no problemsm, or at least that's what I thought. But today I'm getting a message every hour saying "Time machine is unable to back up because the disk is full." It IS full, but Time Machine is supposed to delete the oldest backups when that happens, and keep deleting them in order.
Anyway, when I opened up my backup disk I discovered backups from February and most of March, nothing in April and nothing in May.
I'm a little freaked.
Does anybody know why that would happen and what to do about it?

There's a problem with a file on that disk. See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. -
Why does time machine say my wireless hard drive doesn't have enough space when it clearly does?
I have a 2 TB western digital hard drive connected via USB to my airport extreme (Y2012) that i've been using the past 2 years to connect to wirelessly. The hard drive has 2 partitions, ~1 TB each. 1 partition for backing up, the other for storing media. Recently I deleted my macbook pro backup. My macbook pro has a 500GB hard drive, of which about 120 GB is free.
Since I deleted the old time machine backup disk image and told time machine to start a new backup, I am now receiving an error. It's telling me there isn't enough room on the drive, when the 1TB partition i'm trying to use (as i've sucessfully done in the past) has nothing on it. 1 full TB free, and my macbook pro can't backup a 500 GB hard drive, which isn't even full itself.
PLEASE HELP!! I have a macbook pro early 2011, and I never know when the board is going to go koput again and I don't currently have a backup of my stuff while this problem persists.

Do you have an external drive connected?
If you do has it gone into sleep mode? There is a setting in the OS to put drives to sleep if they aren't being used. Energy Saver "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
Also most external drives have a built in sleep function that if they aren't being accessed for a period of time they go to sleep by themselves. -

Recently installed a 1TB Hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook (13inch mid 2010) OS X 10.6.8 .
However now having problems with configuring , latest issue my Time Machine says Not Configured hence cannot back up using this device !
Can anyone help ?You installed the new hdd with new install of Mac OS .. or did you recover your old TM setup??
If TM cannot locate the Time Capsule .. is it visible in airport utility or finder??
Are you even using a TC?? If you are using an external drive you need to spell it all out.
Time Machine may not recognise the old backup.. you can usually inherit the old one.

Otherwise use A4.. delete the existing TM setup and reconfigure it from scratch. If you do that TM should discover and reuse the old backups if possible.. but a new hard disk might not be possible it may need to start over. -
Why does Time Machine Hang OSX when a USB drive does not respond?
I use USB drives to store photo data. When I back up the drives using Time Machine to a Time Capsule, If I have added a large amount of data to the USB drive, the backup will consistently fail with the drive hung. I can see the drive in finder, but I cannot see the directory structure. Often OSX hangs too and I cannot even get to finder, just the whirling colored wheel. Sometimes the system has entered sleep mode and it will not wake up. I if I am using the monitor, I can open the MAC Book Pro cover and the screen there shows alternately, a blue screen and the screen wallpaper, flipping back and forth but otherwise unresponsive. If I turn the USB drive off the OS recovers and Time Machine completes, usually indicating a backup failure (but not always). The drive is always very hot under these circumstances, indicating that the system is issuing repetitive operations to the drive. I should emphasize that I am not writing to the USB drives during backup, Time Machine is just reading the drive. So several questions:
1) How in the world can a non system drive hang the Operating System? This is a big no-no for a supposedly multi-tasking Operating System.
2) I use Aperture 2.1 to store data on the USB drives with no problems (at least so far). Why would Time Machine drive the USB drive so hard that it fails? I had the same problem using a USB drive with iTunes. It completely fried the drive by writing to it too intensively during one of the frequent software updates. Is there no throttle mechanism in OSX that limits the disc activity so that the throttle mechanism is not the failure of the drive itself?
3) Does Apple have a list of USB drives that it has validated to be able to work with it's system reliably?Are the USB drives powered from the computer or do they have their own power supplies.
There is a limit to how much power can be drawn from each USB port and also a total limit. If you exceed this, unexpected things can happen. -
Why does Time Machine run continually?
I moved from Snow Leopard to Lion last week, and also converted my MobileMe account to iCloud. It has now been seven days and Time Machine appears to have never stopped backing up. To be more precise, it appears that as soon as it completes one back up, it immediately starts on a new one. My Time Machine drive is an external 750 GB connected by FW800. Time Machine estimates the size of a full backup at 132.66 GB. The Bootcamp partition on my 320 GB internal drive and the external Time Machine drive are excluded from the backups. Looking at the Star Wars screen in Time Machine shows that it has made two backups per day since the move, so I don't think it is still making the initial full back up due to the OS upgrade.
Is this normal? If not, what may be causing Time Machine to run continually? It did not behave in this way with Snow Leopard and previous versions of OS X.

It sounds like you may have either or both of the following:
Your backups are too large. Something is being backed-up often, or every time, that is taking a lot of time and disk space. See #D4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Your backups are running too slowly, for one or more reasons. See #D2 in the Troubleshooting Tip. -
Why does time capsule go missing from the network. The green light is lit at all times. I am unable to use the software the only thing I can do is power cycle time capsule, by unplugging and plugging the mains back in.
My time capsule is only a few weeks old, any ideas?
I am new to apple products very impressed with iPhone 5, I pad, iMac. Really not sure about time capsule!
ThanksAn external drive is much more reliable.. the issue has to do with network connection and loss of something.. although I am sorry I cannot tell you exactly what. The computer is still connected, still works on internet but has actually lost the hard disk.. lost and cannot find it without a restart.
If you want to try a few changes it can help.
1. If you are connected by ethernet make sure wireless is off in the imac.. having only one network connection is better than two.
2. Redo the TC setup with all short names.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Apple has these long names with spaces and characters like apostrophe by default but they are not a help.
3. If the TC is the main router then reduce the dhcp lease time.. make it 20min.. that keeps everything refreshed and up to date.
None of those fix it but they may help stretch out the interval. -
I'm pretty sure that upto a few months ago I had a hard disk connected via USB to my Airport Extreme and I was able to backup all the computers on my home network. However, somehow over the last few months this had stopped happening. I am not able to select my network disks for time machine backup.
There is a very unhelpful sentence on Apple's website which simply says it does not allow backup to hard disks connected to Airport Extreme via USB. Does anyone know why this is? Is there a way around this? Long time reader, first time poster...
after having to install a new hard drive on my MacBook Pro, the new Time Machine backups are not recognising the original/older backups on the external hard drive connected via network router and has created a new/second backup caller 'xxx Mac Book Pro 1' instead of updating/reading the orginal 'xxx Mac Book Pro backup'?
Does anyone know why it did this? and more importantly how do i make it recgonise the original and stop making the secondary copy?

It's been some time I have this problem now.
The first time I backed up my mac within Time Capsule with time machine, I chose to use the ethernet cable because the gigabit connection is much faster than the wifi for the first back up, but now, any time I want to update this back up, I need to connect the cable, cause "Time Machine can not connect to the Drive I picked" over wifi.
This is so annoying. Does anyone have a similar issue ?
Any solution ?
When I got this "error" I can use Utility Airport and get full access to the drive, even in finder. The only thing that doesn't work is TimeMachine connecting to the drive, even if it is detected by TimeMachine itself.

I suggest a full reconfigure of the TC.
Follow this list..
No files are deleted on the TC doing this although you might have to repoint your laptop to the backup.
Note.. even if TM does connect it will say it is going to do a new backup.. it is only when it starts that it discovers the backup exists and increments it.
Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.

Why does Time machine still ask for a disk when it is switched off?
My Time Capsule recently died, PSU problems , I think. So I went into system prefs and deselected the Time Capsule as the back-up disk in Time Machine and switched off Time Machine. Yet every few minutes I get a window appearing telling me Time Machine can't find a back-up disk. Why is this happening and how do I stop it? Thanks

Why does time machine back up change root directory of software?
about a year ago i did a time machine back up of my old macbook pro, then when i came to use a piece of software (native instruments-traktor) it said the root directory had been changed and it couldnt find the file. i had to remove the whole program from my mac and redownload it. then since then had no problems.
now ive just purchased a new macbook today and wanted all my old files and software on it so i did a migration expert with time machine. it seems to have bought most things over.....a few files are missing from logic but again when i went open traktor, again it said root directory changed,,,im not to good with these root directorys so havent got a clue what to do so again ive had to remove the program and redownload it which is a bit of a pain.
any ideas why time machine changes it??I'm also puzzled because it continually wants to back up some 15MB or more when I've changed nothing
Suggest that you download and install BackupLoupe to find out exactly what is being backed up on each pass.

If you want to change the backup frequency of Time Machine, an application like Time Machine Editor will allow you schedule backups whenever you like. But, you may not need to do this if you can figure out what might be causing the first issue.
