HT3302 iphone 3gs shutting off unexpectedly

my iphone 3gs has been shutting off for no reason even after charging for 6 hours i cant even plug it out or it will turn off please help

The exact same thing happens to my phone. I am looking at something, online or an app, and the screen suddenly goes dark. When I check the battery, it indicates that it is dead. However, a few seconds after I plug it in, the battery will show a lot more life (like over 60% at least).
I'm going to try and restore the phone tonight, but I have no other ideas. I guess I'll try going to the Apple store if that doesn't work.

  • New iPhone 5s shut off unexpected and won't turn back on

I just received my new 5s. I activated it. Made a phone call. I was downloading my apps, and using them, when the phone shut off unexpected. I tried to turn the phone back on, the apple logo appeared, then it went to the waiting circle for a couple of minutes. After a couple of minutes the screen had a blue screen for a second, then it went back to the waiting circle, then it turned off. I've tried turning it on a couple of times with the same results. Help!

    Hello Keith,
Congratulations on your new iPhone 5s!  I would be concerned too if my iPhone shut off unexpectedly and would not power on.  I found an article with steps you can take when you encounter an issue like this.  I recommend following the steps below:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • IPhone 3GS Shuts off Randomly

I've had my iPhone 3GS since Feb. of 2010. The same phone since Feb. 2010 with no problems. I noticed my phone started shutting off around 20% in December. I didn't think of it as a big problem. Then it got worse and started shutting off around 35% in mid-January 2012. Then it started shutting off at 50% around early March. Now it's June 2012 and it's basically shutting off around 70-80%. Sometimes it shuts off around 87% when I try to play a phone game. It's gotten to the point where I can't use my phone outside at all because it'll just shut off. I've tried restoring the phone and that doesn't work. I've tried "X-ing" out comments I don't use. I've known other people with this problem who've tried restoring to factory settings and that didn't work. I don't want to waste my upgrade on the iPhone 4S when the iPhone 5 is coming soon. I don't know what to do. This phone is ******* me off. Please help.
Is there a battery replacement that I can get? I don't have money to cough up for another phone. I don't want to waste my contract upgrade for another phone. I want to wait until the iPhone 5 to upgrade. And I'm out of warranty now so Apple probably won't replace my phone.

Apple battery replacement costs $80, but you actually get a new replacement iPhone 3GS.

  • What makes my iphone 3gs shuts off?

What makes my iphone3gs shuts off? Do I need a new battery? Is it related to the IOS?

My 23 month old iPhone 3GS would shut off randomly and then show no battery. Sometimes I could turn it back on and the battery would be about 50%. So I'd plug it in and within minutes it would back up to 100%. Then a few minutes later, it was off again. This happened on 3G, wifi, phone call, Safari, games, with all the bells and whistles turned off, etc. I spent weeks researching the web and found one post about replacing the battery. I just wanted my iPhone to last until the 5 came out. Since the genius bar fix (back up, synch, restore, etc.) didn't work, I gave this a try. ifixit.com sells OEM batteries and a replacement kit for about $30. The directions were very complete (except connector 5 was a little more difficult than I was expecting). I was very nervous about doing this but figured the phone was useless to me anyway, so why not. Amazingly, when I got it put back together, everything worked and the phone functioned just like it did when it was new. This was about 3 months ago and everything is still working. And I haven't had to turn off all the features I got the phone for, either. There are other companies that sell these kits but ifixit.com has a great reputation.
If you do this, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT BATTERY. You cannot use any other battery other than the OEM one. And don't be discouraged if it doesn't work. There was a bad batch of batteries a few months ago. ifixit.com will immediately replace whatever they sent you.
Lately I've been reading posts complaining that this only started happening after one of the 4.x upgrades. I found a few answers about one of those upgrades not being compatible with the original battery. So if your 2 year old iPhone 3GS is shutting off randomly and the battery meter is funky, or this just started happening, try replacing the battery.

  • My iPhone 3Gs shuts off when I try to use the red eye remover in the phot edit option after I got the latest upgrade

When attempting to edit a phot I pushed the red eye removal tool. The iPhone went black and the apple logo appeared. I had to hold down the power button for about 5 seconds to turn it back on but it never completely shut off this happened the next 3 times as well. It happened after I updated to 5.1

Are you running modified software on your phone?  This error seems to be common if the firmware has been modified and you're trying to restore the phone again.

  • My Iphone 3gs shuts off and on by itself several times.

I bought a Iphone 3gs from a friend and it has no service on it yet. Anyways it turns itself off and on several times through out the day would not haveing and service cause this issue? Also when i plug it up to the computer and try to sync it with itunes it continuesly does it over and over. Could i get some help please

hey ive had this problem too!....i took it to the apple store and they said the 3gs is now "old" and i need a new one and it may be the battery, i changed the battery but that didnt make a difference!...ive found that its a problem with the software  and im in the process of trying to fix it myself...troubleshooting and resetting the settings back to factory settings may just do the trick!

  • Iphone 4S shuts off unexpectedly

I have to reset my phone every day. Wonder if I  should return it.

    i have the same problem!
My iPhone 4 shuts down for no reason a lot of times...
I perform a lot of hard reset without restoring again (because if you restore old backups it will restore settings too) and the problem persists !!!
The only way it work fine is connecting to power or working without SIM card (like an ipod), but this is a phone!!
It worked very good for 2 years, i lost warranty, and i'm with this problem for 2 months and it's very annoying, and i'm losing faith in apple products...

  • My 3GS iPhone randomly shuts off

My 3GS iPhone randomly shuts off or gives a low battery indicator even when the battery is not low. I tried going to the Apple store and they were not helpful saying to close out apps using the multi-task button. Even after doing that, my phone was continuing to shut down. First is was around 33%, then 54%, then 76%, then even at 97%. So I had the battery replaced with a brand-new battery.
Now not only does the phone randomly shut down saying a low battery, but it is not recognizing the charge on the battery. I had the phone on for six hours unplugged and it remained at 100% charge. Then I went to make a phone call on it and after two minutes the phone completely shut off. It would not accept a charge. I had it charge overnight. I tried using different cords. I tried plugging it into a USB port on a computer, using the wall charger, and a car charger. The phone kept saying the battery was dead. Then miraculously then phone started to work a day and a half later, but only for one phone call. Then phone died again and has not accepted a charge for two days now. You would think after two days, the NEW battery would be charged.
My phone is not under warranty. I do not have the funds to purchase a new iPhone at this time.I know there have been a lot of posts about this, but I have tried every concievable option out there and nothing is working. I'm frustrated. Is this an operating system error and can it be fixed? Or is the phone trashed? ARGH!!

    So Brad, just an update...
My phone periodically works and then it doesn't. The battery percentage indictator still continues to remain at 100% charge though I know common sense would tell me that the battery percentage would be decreased if the phone sat unplugged and on all day long. When then phone does work, I try to restore it, but iTunes keeps saying that there must have been a connection failure and iTunes had to stop downloading. FYI- I have no connection issues with my Internet.
    Here is the weird thing...
Sometimes the phone is still showing the dead battery page and asking me to charge the phone. So I'll plug in the phone, let it sit charging for 4 hours, 12 hours, even days at a time... and it will continue to have the battery dead screen asking me to charge the phone. So then I will unplug the phone and leave it alone. After approximately 48 hours, I'll go back to the phone and hit the Home button and miracuously the phone would turn on. It is as if the phone is confused and the battery life is being drained when it is plugged in, but then miracuously recharges itself while sitting unconnected to any cords or plugs.
This makes no sense and I cannot explain it. I have waited to respond to your initial postings because I wanted to see if I could restore the phone. In addition, I wanted to confirm I was not crazy and that the phone is actually acting opposite what it should in reference to charging vs. non-charging.
Any idea why the phone is acting backwards in regards to the battery life? Since my last post, I've only been able to actually turn on my phone 3 times, literally once a week and then it only lasts for about 12 hours before dying on me again.

  • Can I make 3GS shut off when power removed?

I'm using my retired 3GS as an iPod in my car, it's being powered by an outlet that shuts off when the car is turned off.  I ran my original iPhone the same way but when I turned the car off, the power to the iPhone turned off and the iPhone would shut off.  My 3GS won't do this and I'm wondering if there's some setting to make this happen.  I surely can't find it.
    Thanks

Actually, I think I understand what was happening.  For my original iPhone connection, I had some old Belkin device that plugged into the cigarette lighter of my car but the AUX jack also plugged into that housing.  I'm betting somehow that old unit would make the iPhone think the connector had been completely removed, sense that and shut off.  Just like when you unplug it.
That old Belkin unit wouldn't work with my iPhone 3GS so I swapped it out for a different cabling set up and it's only the power that's switched off.
    Thanks,
    bo

  • My iphone 3gs is off and wont start up.

My iphone 3gs is off and wont start up. And when plugg it into the charger it starts up for a minute and shut down. but whithout charger dosnt do anything. Cant restore and it is not a battery problem.

    Sure sounds like faulty battery.
Open iTunes on computer, connect iPhone to computer, hold both Home and Power buttons until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. Usually takes about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. Restore the Firmware.

  • Iphone 3gs shuts down & reboots on its own.

The 2 yr old iphone 3gs shuts down on its own and the silver apple icon pops up ~ the phone boots itself up. This has been happening more frequently, since Dec 2010. I could be on the internet, or using any app and it does this. A couple times I had to simutaneously hold down the power and home buttons to turn on the phone, and, or, unfreeze the phone. I always charge my phone, and regularly sync it with the latest upgrade(s). What is going on?

I had this, but I have now rectified the issue. It's an app?
I de-selected all my apps and just left the standard ones on.
I did a full restore from backup but did not sync any apps.
Problem solved, no more dropped calls. No more apple logo for no reason.
I am slowly re-adding my apps, 1 or 2 at a time, I have over 150 so it may take a while but so far I have reloaded about 10 of my most used ones and still everything fine. I will find the one that caused the problem eventually!!
Happy bunny again though, as I have a phone that can actually make a call for more than 5 minutes!!
