HT3371 My battery icon is saying "Replace Now".

I don't think I did anything. I'm very careful with my MacBook Pro. I ordered it from QVC in October or November of 2012 so it's really not that old. I feel it shouldn't have these problems this early. When I plug it into the charger the charger's light is green like it's fully charged but it shows up 0% on my battery icon. ALSO when I don't have it pluged in "charging" it dies. What do I do? It's only February 2013 I'll be going off to college and I was planning on taking this with me. I don't even know how to go about getting it fixed so any information would be very helpful. Thank you.

Jump down to reset the #1 SMC, that might fix the issue.

  • My Battery is not charging says  replace now, i have important work to finish will this harm my laptop

    Hello Guys!
My battery out of the blue started not functioning, if i remove the charger my laptop goes off, i switch back on it shows power source only, battery is not charging "replace now" is there any way i can fix this.
    thanks in advance

The model 6,1 Late 2009 and the model 7,1 Mid 2010 use an A1331 battery. You can replace it yourself or have take your MacBook to an Apple Store and have Apple do it for you. If you need it quickly make sure you order it from a U. S. seller. Orders from China can take two or three weeks.

Here's installation instructions. You'll need a Tri Wing Y1 screwdriver in addition to the usual #00 Phillips screwdriver.

You can keep using it with the power adapter until you get a new battery.

  • Battery telling me to replace now?

    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 4535
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5215
    Health Information:

    Voltage (mV): 12030
So why is it Replace Now? I got it in June and it didn't I just noticed it says Replace Now today (though it could have been earlier). Last night after using it (i dont remember how much battery it had left..probably not too much cause i had ichatted/emailed/surfed the web for several hours without the charger) i closed it and put it in the case. today about 16 hours later I opened it up and it didnt come back from sleep so i plugged it in, turned it on and then it resumed from sleep. so i was just thinking oh..it must have ran out of battery while sleeping all of today. And then I checked the top left corner and saw it said replace now..and im confused why it would say that. Especially when the Full charge capacity hasnt changed significantly since like a month ago when I am sure it did not say replace now.
    thanks
Also, I have heard I need to reset and recalibrate my battery. The steps on this site aren't as detailed as I would like..and it seems like it will take 5 hours to do which I don't really have...

AppleCare doesn't even come into play until your computer is a full year old. You're still covered by your basic new-computer warranty, so use it.
One note: if this computer was new in June and you've already put 125 cycles on it, you're using your battery very hard. This won't affect your warranty coverage; a good new battery should be able to take that and more. But even if it were a good one (which it apparently isn't), usage that heavy would make its overall useful lifespan shorter than if it weren't used as hard. Your work may require you to cycle it nearly every day, and if that's the case, so be it. But if you have the option of reducing your battery use to a cycle or two per week by using AC power more of the time, that will be easier on your next battery.

  • Battery icon just says "not charging" full charge takes 9 hours :(

Regardless if I select time or %, next to the battery icon just says "not charging". It does not read out how much time or % of battery life I have left. Also the battery went to zero and when I plugged it in, it says a full charge would be almost 9 hours....is this normal. The cyce count is 125 and condition is normal......thoughts? thanks

I had a similar problem with my black macbook... I took it to the Genius bar and they determined that it was a faulty charger. The light on my charger would flicker orange/green/orange/green. sometimes no light at all. They replaced it. But since my battery had been recharged over 300 times, they replaced the battery as well. Since then---no problems with charging.

  • Is it harmful to use a dead battery that says "replace now"?

My battery died yesterday (all LEDs blinking 5 times) and when I turn on my computer, it says "not charging" and "replace now".  I'm a student with not a lot of cash so I can't buy a battery at the moment.  Will plugging in the AC adapter do fne for now or does "replace now" mean I really have to replace now or my computer may suffer in other ways?
Also, my computer date and time resets each time I log in...what's up with that?

A battery is cheaper to purchase than a computer.  You do the math!

  • 2 year old MBP battery says replace now

Although my MacBook Pro ("15) is only 2 years old, it says that the battery needs to be replaced. It doesn't start when it's not connected to the current and if it's adapted it says: not loading. It's supposed to last 5 years...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your battery could have failed prematurely. Report it to Apple and see if you can get a replacement.
BTW, 88 cycles are not very many for 2 years of use--batteries will fail sooner if they are not used enough. Here's a good read on batteries:

  • Macbook pro battery reports not charging replace now

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro reports that it is not charging and the status is "replace now". This is an early 2008 model so is it simply the fact that the battery is due for replacement or could there be another explanation :
I have not used the Mac Book for a few months and battery lasted 3-4 hours on last use.
The battery has only had 30 power cycles, I thought that average should be about 300 ?
Did Apple recall/replace known issues with batteries in this model/date, even so it probably isn't valid now ?
    Thanks
    Jake

There have not any battery recalls that I am aware of.  I suggest you go to the Apple store and have the MBP examined.  Your cycle count is very low but the battery is not new, coupled with the fact the MBP warning message is there for a purpose.
    Ciao.

  • Battery problems - "not charging (replace now)"

I'm getting this message, although my battery hasn't really shown any signs of problems in the past. I haven't been using my Macbook (late 2007) for 2 months now and I'm guessing that's why the problem appeared.

I tried reseating the battery and resetting SMC. Any other steps that I could try?

Nope. Seems it's done. Considering the age of the battery it was at the end of it's life. Macbook batteries start degrading after their 3rd year under normal use.
Some people think that charge cycles are the only factor to a battery's life, but it's the laptop's heat that degrades the battery's capacity the most.
Next time you decide to leave the mac in storage for a long period of time leave it off, unplugged and with a 50% battery charge. That's what apple recommends.
Get a replacement battery and problem solved!

  • MacBook pro battery not charging anymore, Replace Now, Unibody 2011

    Hi everyone
I have a MacBook pro unibody from 2011 (usually used on power but sometimes dischared) and suddenly my battery is indicating "not charging" (is constantly to 0%) and I have the following diagnostic (in the about my mac).
If I remove the plug, the Macbook shutdowns immediately, I cannot connect it to any wifi network, and the date & clock are reset if I unplug it.
I tried the SMC reset and event the reset the NVRAM (PRAM on intels) (I am not sure about the SMC reset as there is no evident signs it has worked...).
My battery only has 120 charge cycles... and my warranty is of course finished. I have read on some forums that I maybe have to "unplug the battery" manually ? And changing the so few used battery seem to be too expensive...
Does anybody has an idea ?
    Thanks for your help

Whether you had the Applecare extended warranty or not it would not cover the battery on a 2011 model. Apple considers the battery to be a consumable item that will fail eventually. Because of that after the first year of ownership Apple does not replace the battery for free, in warranty or not.
That is not necessarily the case.  I had a battery replaced free of charge well after one year of use.  There is latitude exercised by Apple in determining if and when a battery should be replaced for free.  I suggest that there is a strong argument in the case of one with 120 cycles.  As is the case with any part, some that are produced are defective and fail prematurely, whether it is a battery, HDD, RAM chip etc.
    Ciao.

  • Battery icon says/shows full, but it is not actually charged.

My battery icon keeps saying that it is fully charged (or when it's connected to a power source that is it "Finishing Charge...") but when I unplug it, the time says it only has a few minutes left. I've tried restarting my computer, but that didn't work. I'm not really sure what's wrong with it. I've also let the battery die out and then try charging it, but that didn't work. Anyone know what I can do?

Yeah, it was purchased in August 2008. I'm not really sure what a charge cycle is, but I do plug it in and unplug it a lot to a power source. Mainly because I keep my computer on most of the time (either on or on sleep). So between taking it to classes and stuff, I'll recharge in between and when it's really low, otherwise I run it off the battery most of the time.
On a sidenote, I have went to that information thing about about the battery after letting it sit plug in for a few hours, and now it has this information:

I bought a new battery for my MacBook today.  I put it into my computer, but when I click on my battery icon it says no battery availble.  I would like to know why?

    Hi....
    Try restarting your Mac ...
"Keep in mind that once the new battery is inserted, you will need to press the power button to start up the computer."

If it restarts ok the battery icon should be available from the status menu bar.

  • X over battery icon

There is an x over my battery icon, powersaver says it's at zero percent. It's been plugged in all day, please help.

It seems to have the same problem with the MacBook Pro of a friend a 15 in 2.0 GHz Intel MA600LL.
The light is green but it is indicated *no charging in progress* and that *the battery is to replace*.
The first battery is very recent; only 55 cycles.
The second is an old one. The last time that I used it, it indicated 1058 mA and 12533 mV.
I suspect that it is not realy a problem of battery. Of management of the charge perhaps ? I have resetted SMC, without success.
Is there a pro with a little help ?
    Alex

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Once you are safely connected go to the iPod Summary tab and make sure "manually manage music and videos" is checked:

  • Had Power Adapter replaced, battery icon not showing charge

Hello, hoping you guys can help me out. Recently, my power adapter had burned out (wouldn't show charge/light up at all). I've had it replaced as of today and is working fine (Whoo!), but now a new problem's come up.
I admit I used my battery to it's limit while waiting for the new adapter, and while the light on the adapter is green, the battery icon on my screen is showing 0%. Pressing the button on the battery only gives me one green light.
I've heard something about Re-Calibrating the battery in my manual, but I'm unsure if that's the best course for my case. Here's my Power System Profile, if it helps:

Re-calibrating the battery is typically done with a new battery, where you charge it all the way up, then run it all the way down a couple of times. This calibrates the battery's internal electronics to the actual capacity of the battery. Not a concern here.
Looking at your battery stats, is your battery fairly new? It is showing 56 charge/discharge cycles, does that sound about right? Reason for asking is, if the battery is old, like maybe the original battery that came with the system, sometimes a dying lithium battery throws up screwy stats. If it is an older battery, that may be why it's not charging ... it's dead. However, if it is a newer battery ....
There's only 4 components to the charging circuit - power adapter, dc-in card, battery, and logic board. You have a new power adapter, and the system is seeing the 65 watt power adapter, so the power adapter and dc-in card appear to be OK. That leaves either a battery issue or a logic board issue. Do you have another battery you can swap in, or a friend with the same model PowerBook, or an Apple store nearby? If you swap another battery in, and it starts charging, and the current batter is an older one, then replace the battery. I used this one on mine, and others have had good things to say about it: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook/battery/g4-15inch-aluminum/ . I would stay away from batteries sold on ebay, as there have been a number of people very disappointed with the lack of quality in the battery they bought.
If another battery won't charge, that would point to a logic board issue. We just had that on one of our PowerBooks, where it would charge, and it wasn't a power adapter, dc-in, or battery problem. The Apple store sent it off to the Apple Depot, for around $350, and they replaced the logic board as well as the battery. If they do more work, like replacing a dented case, the price goes up. If the Apple store replaces the logic board in the store, it costs around $750 or more.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
