HT3399 Volume/Brightness keys stopped working

This has stopped working for me. The volume and brightness keys have stopped working, regardless of what I set "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function key" to. I'd love to know how to restore the default function key behaviour.

I'm on a Macbook Pro from September 2011 on OSX 10.7.3 and had this problem for a few weeks despite numerous restarts and searching through forums (quite a few people have this problem and some even had to resort to reinstalling OSX, which definitely wasn't an option for me).
However I'm glad to say the problem went away after doing a Software Update via the Apple menu. Your mileage may vary but if anyone is still having this problem, it might be worth giving this a go.

  • Brightness keys stopped working; won't restart or shut down

A couple days ago my brightness and volume keys stopped working. I thought restarting my computer (i also needed to restart it to install a software update) would fix this problem but then realized my Mac won't go to sleep, restart, or shut down. Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you'll have to, then...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
(If perchance you cant Find your Install Disk, at least do the Safe Boot part above).

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard - Volume & Brightness keys not working Windows 7

Finally got my wireless keyboard working within Windows 7 but the volume / Eject / Brightness keys all do nothing - all other keys appear fine.
I have reinstalled the bootcamp drivers for the 2nd time but still nothing. I had this all working previously but have factory restored my iMac and cant remember how I originally did this..
    Any ideas?

Maybe you could update the Boot Camp drivers. That happened to my internal keyboard, and updated drivers some times fixed it. Other times it fixed itself after a few restarts.

  • Help, sound and brightness keys stopped working

    Friends,
after an requested software update (Quicktime, Security..) all the sudden the monitor control keys (brighter/darker) and also the sound keys (louder/quieter) don't work anymore. Any hints how to get them back to work?
    Thanks, Alexander

Which update did you do? Earlier this year, a new update from Apple required a delay before some buttons responded. For instance, before, you could press the brightness keys and it would respond instantly. After the update, you had to literally hold it down for a second or two before it responded. It was a way to prevent accidental inputs.
This may not be your problem, especially if you can't do anything at all. But that was something I encountered. Freaked me out. But holding it down made it work. I don't remember the exact issue and posting at this moment.
I do know the number one issue was the eject key. Again, before, if you pressed the eject key, your media would come out right away. After the specific update, you had to hold it down before you could eject anything. (Hold down the button before it would register).

  • Macbook Pro 15inch Volume, brightness keys not working (All the special F keys)

    Hello,
I have this problem on my MBP where my Fn (Function Keys) on the top row of my keyboard don't work properly. I use these keys all the time to adjust brightness, keyboard LED brightness, pause, play and volume but they aren't working anymore. When I press F12 it shows the dashboard. I already have the 'Use all F1, F2 ect. keys as standard function keys' unchecked in System preferences, Keyboard. I am on a bootcamped MBP but mainly use the Mac OSX. This problem is occuring on Mac OSX not Windows. I have not dropped my MBP to damage it or anything like that. I have installed 16GB Ram and the Seagate Momentus 750GB Hybrid SSD a few months ago. Anyone know how I can fix this?
Any help will be extremly appreciated!
    - Kieran/Paul

Check the setting in Keyboard, Keyboard Tab, that the "Use all F1, F2, ect. keys as standard function keys" isn't checked.

  • Brightness control keys stop working after booting MacOSX

I bought a new iMac 27" a couple of weeks ago, and I installed Windows 7 using bootcamp.
All the control keys (brightness, volume, etc) works ok on Windows until I reboot it in MacOSX. When i start windows again, brightness controls keys stops working, leaving the screen with the maximus bright, which is killing my eyes.
Reparing boot camp drivers doesn't do the trick. Am I missing something?

Try fn + the controls. It might be that Windows defaulted to those buttons as F1, F2, etc. Using fn while pressing the buttons will 'tell' Windows that it has to listen to the Bootcamp software and lower the brightness.

  • Volume and brightness keys not working with new keyboard on imac

I just purchased a new wired keyboard for imac and brightness and volume control keys not working . i have tried adjusting keyboard settings. I have software version 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade software. Thank you for any help.

Do you have "Automatically Adjust Brightness" check box ticked in System Preferences > Displays > Display ? If so, you can't manually adjust brightness.

  • Volumeicon volume keys stop working after adjusting volume via icon

When Volumeicon is first started, the volume keys work fine, (although it doesn't show the volume bar like it does when you scroll on the icon for some reason). When I adjust the volume by scrolling the mousewheel on the icon, the volume keys stop working and volume can only be adjusted via scrollwheel. Volumeicon must be restarted to restore volume key functionality.
Why is this happening? What's going on?

Is this something that worked previously but then stopped working correctly?
What window manager / desktop environment are you using?
If you start volumeicon from the command line then use it are there any error messages?
Alternatively, does the volumeicon-gtk2 packagen in the AUR work better?

  • My return and shift key stopping working

my return and shift key stopping working. It wont go to the next line or function as an enter.
Now, most of the time it wont do anything but if you push it several times it will type a 0p or /- or control volume the instead. I checked the keyboard setting and voicecontrol and reset it to default and updated software for system but no resolve. How do I fix this?

Hi -- I have this problem too. I cleaned out the keyboard, did an SMC reset, a PRAM reset, and also followed the steps I could follow from this article, linked to in the answer to another question:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
no luck with any of it. Could we please have some advice targetted at the specific problem of nonfunctional shift and return keys on a MacBook Air?
In the meantime I'm using only the left-side shift and have downloaded and installed KeyRemap4MacBook and remapped my backslash key so it issues the "return" command. A clunky work around but it seems to do the trick, at least.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
There will be no audio output in safe mode. The question to be answered by the test is whether any devices are listed in the Sound preference pane. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Function keys stop working/Apps Won't launch

This issue has been occurring pretty regularly for a few months, and its starting to get quite annoying.  Hopefully someone has some advice.
The first thing I'm able to notice is that the function keys (volume, expose, itunes controls, etc) will stop responding on my bluetooth keyboard (the rest of the keyboard and the mouse function just fine).  Within a few minutes I won't be able to launch any apps - usually I'll get a bounce or two before they give up trying.  At this point, selecting log out/restart/shut down from the apple menu is pretty fruitless and I'm left to shut down by holding down my power button on the iMac.  I never receive any explicit error messages.
Most applications that are already launched work just fine, the one exception seems to be iTunes.  If I try to plug in my iphone when things have gone haywire, iTunes will freeze up and give me a spinning beach ball.
Sometimes it happens after weeks of uptime, sometimes only days.  Sometimes I notice when I wake from sleep, sometimes it happens while I'm working (once I was lowering the volume and it stopped working a few button presses in).  I haven't been able to track down any common precipitating event.
I did the normal battery of tasks - repaired permissions, zapped my pram, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love any help.
Hopefully next time it happens I'll think to check my console output after I reboot, but currently I don't have any log files around the time it happened.

I would recommend starting with a SMC reset, here are some instructions for doing one. Sometimes it takes 2-3 attempts to fix a problem so don't be afraid to repeat it.
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

Before installing , remove the previous one and restart the lap, then. Now, install downloaded one.

  • I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function works

I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function, render workspace function, export file are still operational. How can I fix it so I may complete my assignment?
Besides DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite 6 is the only software on the machine. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Operating System on AMD FX 6100 six-Core Processor at 3.31gHz and 32 GB RAM memory. There are two SLI-bridged GTX680 NVidia cards.
The software was very stable for the last six months, working with 720P proxy files from 2.5K masters (Blackmagic Design Camera). I am working on a feature-length project that exceeds 1000 edits. I have broken the file into 2 one hour segments.
I have deactivated the software before reinstalling the entire OS from scratch. PP6 was very stable for 48 hours. Then the freezing space bar returns. After a dozen strokes into the project, same problem.  I have made cache files store next to originals, I have deleted preview files if they were corrupted and causing instability. Am I missing something?
I have Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. I double checked the memory for damage/defect. Nothing says that the motherboard or other components are damaged.
I am in film competition overseas and need to have deliverables in less than a month's time.  I lost the last two weeks troubleshooting and this crisis came at an inopportune moment of the project.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Still getting software freezes but found a way to mitigate for the mean time.
Upon launching Adobe Premiere Pro, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to launch TaskManager as well.
You will want to highlight Adobe QT32 Server.exe
Right click and select "End Process Tree"
You will get considerable stability in the program, long enough to get timing of cuts done. Be sure to save often.
If the program freezes, do not hit Save. You definitely want to avoid saving the corruption into your TimeLine
CTRL-ALT-DEL to relaunch the TaskManager and highlight Adobe Premiere Pro.exe
    Right-click to "End Process"
No need to reboot the whole system; just launch Premiere Pro again and continue with the session. Note that your work reverted to Last Save.
Hope this helps until the bug is fixed.
