A update(6.1.5) was available for my ipod 4 and an error occurred. Itunes is telling me to restore my ipod, but i know that if i restore my ipod everything will be erased. The SIM passcode or the lock screen passcode?
If you mean the lockscreen passcode, you'll have to restore the phone from the last backup.
If you mean an actual SIM passcode, you'll have to contact your carrier. -

That usually means the phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock the phone and when you update the phone it locked back up again.
Only way to resolve this issue, is to find out who the orignal carrier was and have them unlock it. If you bought this from a 3rd party contact the seller and have him/her unlock it for you by contacting the phone carrier. -

That is almost always because the phone was hacked to illegally unlock it. Contact the carrier it's locked to and ask about having it legitimately unlocked. If they will not do so, you will not be able to activate that phone.

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

(I do not remember the exact words) Upon clicking on it a new page opens in Safari for instructions, including opening Terminal under Utilities, etc. Then you will have to add # and a space to one of the lines. Then save and restart the computer. It worked for me. I am sorry I do not remember the exact sequence of these steps. Hope this helps you.

You can see the current version in Settings > General > About > Version. If it shows iOS 5+ then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update for direct update on the iPad, if it's iOS 4 then you can only update via your computer's iTunes.
To update via your computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off it to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
