HT3406 Turning an old iPhone into just an iPod

I was reading this article about turning an iPhone into an iPod, the example that apple gives http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406 doesn't help because the iPhone 5 chip is smaller then the one in my old iPhone. The old phone just saids (could not activate) and I can't get any further to do anything with it. Even when I have it attached to itunes, it will not allow me to do anything. All I want to do is put my old iphone in a ihome player and listen to music.
Is this even possible?

Thank you but what I keep getting is the phone starts off by asking my language where I live then to set up my wifi and then it tries to activate the phone and then just said it can't be activated then there is no more options.
Not sure what I am missing

Follow these steps to use your iPhone without a wireless service plan:
Insert the SIM card from your new, activated iPhone or one that was previously used to activate the original iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
Once iTunes activates the device, you're free to remove the SIM card and use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.

  • I need to transfer playlists from my old iphone into itunes so that I can then add them to my new iphone 6.  However, none of the playlists on my iphone appear when I connect to my macbook.  I have read other threads but have not found answer.  help!

I am a group exercise instructor and rely heavily on my playlists.  My old phone is an iphone 4s and I just bought an Iphone 6.  I also have a macbook where I keep my itunes account, but I create all my playlists on my phone.  I need to transfer those playlists from my old iphone into itunes in my computer so that I can then add them to my new iphone 6.  However, none of the playlists on my iphone appear when I connect to my macbook.  I have read other threads where the suggestion was to attach the old phone to itunes, find the phone in itunes and click the little arrow to the left to show the playlists.  Then right click on the playlist and export it, saving it to the desktop, to then import it into itunes.  However, in my case, the playlists do not show up when the phone is connected to itunes.  I have clicked on the little arrow and all I get is "music", "purchased", etc., but none of my playlists.   I'm sure some years back I probably deleted something in my itunes library and now none of my playlists show.  Please help me.  I would hate to have to recreate all of my playlists.  Thank you!

I know it sounds weird, and that is the reason I posted my question.  Because my case is not like all the ones I've found online and it's confusing.  I added a screen capture of my itunes with my old iphone (the one that houses my playlists) connected to it.
My playlists "ARE"  in my iphone 4s.  They are still there even though they do not show up when I plug in to itunes in my computer.
When connecting my phone to itunes on my macbook, the playlists do not appear anywhere in itunes.  I have found my connected iphone icon, I have clicked on the arrow next to it and it does pull up the standard lists that come with the iphone/itunes:  Music, Movies, TV shows, books.  That's it! below that is "Genius" and below "Geniuns" is "PLAYLISTS"  but the only playlist of mine that shows there is one that I created several years back titled "90's music" and that one I created it on my computer, not my phone.  Under "90's music" there are also other standard playlists that itunes automatically adds.
Does anyone else have this issue or know how to get around this.  I am starting to think that I am going to have to recreate these lists on my computer

I recently bought a new i phone 4 as my other one had seen beter days and for the last sevral days have been trying to transfer my photos ect from my old phone to my new one after I've plugged my old iPhone into iTunes to back it up i then plug in my one to transfer it over I've had no luck I've tryed restoring my new phone to the last time i backed up my old files the phone restores but always to its own backup point wen i first connected it to iTunes can anyone help me please?

Since this is the second computer you've had this problem with, I recommend you look for answers on the iPhone forum. My thinking is it is an iPhone issue rather than a computer issue (unless it is some software incompatibility).

  • Can I use my old iPhone 4s just for music

I got a new phone and wondered if I could use my old iPhone 4s as an iPod. It seems like I should be able to if I just erase everything and add music but I don't know if iTunes will recognize it as a phone or iPod or be weird. I hope this isn't a stupid question! i just have a really really old iPod that's totally full so it would be great to use my old phone!

Yes you can use it as an iPod. I use my old iPhone 4 as an iPod. When you restore an iPhone(on iTunes), it should still recognise the iPhone as an iPhone and go through the new phone set up process. Once you have set the phone up there is a message saying 'No sim card installed!' but you can ignore the message and use the phone as an iPod.

My 6 mo old iPhone 4S just went dead tonight.  Anyone know what could be wrong?

Battery? Use wall charger and charge for half an hour.
Next up: Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears)
Note: you will not lose anything.

  • I was using my old iPhone 4 as an iPod for 4  months when one day I got this error message saying "phone is deactivated visit your local to reactive" ... what the heck??? now the freakin thing won't even charge!!!

Nope. I've already turned off cellular data. It happens regardless, as soon as it is done powering on.
I suspect it might just be built into the phone's firmware to do that... and I have to hit "ignore" whenever it happens, but I just wanted confirmation of that...

  • I want to use my old iPhone 3GS as an Ipod. Nothing is working?

I'm tired of wasting battery on my iPhone 4 to listen to music, so I wanted to use my old iPhone 3GS as an iPod. I read you had to have a sim card inserted in the phone, regardless if it's activated. So I put the old one inside, but when I connect it to my computer, it won't charge, or sync with iTunes. It's definitely not my charger because both of my phones charge in a wall outlet, and my iPhone 4 charges through the computer. Just not the iPhone 3GS.... I'm going on vacations with long car rides and would like to use this. Help please!

I havent used the phone since I got my iPhone 4. Anyone who know how I can reset the phone to standard installation or just get acces to the phone. There is no SIM card in the phone.

    Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for your prompt response, however I have first seen it now. I have placed an active SIM card in the iPhone turned it off and on. It now says SIM locked, please write access code. The problem is I don't remember the password. When I connect it to iTunes it tell me that I have to write the password before it can be used with iTunes...... Do you have any good ideas? I see you are from the NYC area.... used to work there back in the early 90´   Those were good days..... What a City

"There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate" I do not wish to use as iPhone anymore, just an iPod is there a way to use again without inserting a sim card? There is a hardware fault but this is confined to the internal sim card receivers and purely the parts related to the sim card there are no other hardware faults! I've tried dfu mode and a restore and cant find anything related to this anywhere on the internet, thanks for any help in advance, Bobby

iPhones require a SIM card, that card does not need to be active.

  • How to turn an old laptop into a jukebox

    hi all!
because this is my first post, i just want to say that i really like the arch community. didn't need to post anything until now, but since i switched to arch (2-3 years ago), this forum & wiki always helped me. so thanks!
ok - i want to turn an olld laptop into a jukebox for partys. it is an acer aspire 1692 (Pentium-M 740 1.73GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, ATI Mobility Radeon X700 64MB). so what i want is nothing than a fast system, playing the music. the music player should have the following (very basic) features: shuffle, fading, queuing, music library and fastness. my current music library contains around 19000 songs (~100gb). i think i would like to use openbox. but i still can't find a music player. i really like mpd but there is no such feature like queuing (for example, having a playlist, and then adding a song as the next song to be played in the cue, and then continue with the playlist).
    any suggestions? comments?
    thanks!
    hooch

I would like to see you fit 100GB worth of music into an 80GB HDD ;P
Are you saying none of those https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ions#Audio fits your needs?
I would pause mplayer playing the playlist and open another one to play just this track, then return to the first one and continue with the playlist :-) I don't think mplayer supports fast handling of music libraries of ~100GB-size though. How about http://www.clementine-player.org/ ?

  • Converting old iPhone into iPod

    Hey everyone,
My father recently cancelled his iPhone 3G contract and went back to a regular phone, and he converted his 3G into an iPod touch. At the same time, he got a deactivated SIM card for his old Original iPhone; however, when we plug in the original iPhone into iTunes, its asking us to set up the phone as a new AT&T phone again.
My question is, if we go ahead and set it up with his wireless number, will it charge us $30 for the data plan again even though its technically a deactivated SIM and all we are doing is activating it so the phone stops bugging us to connect to iTunes?
    Once again to clarify:
iPhone 2G + Deactivated SIM asks for setup as new phone on AT&T (but we don't want to set it up as a new phone)

You obviously don't understand what I provided.
Why are you inserting a SIM card in the first place if you want to use the iPhone as an iPod Touch? Not using the iPhone since it was deactivated 2 years ago or regardless when it was deactivated doesn't require inserting a SIM card in order to sync the iPhone with iTunes or use the iPhone as an iPod Touch.
If you are trying to install a firmware update or restore the iPhone with iTunes (which installs the current firmware) without activating the iPhone, you need to insert the no longer activated SIM card that was used with the iPhone when it was activated in order to complete the process. There is no way around this. If you activate the iPhone, it is no different from activating any other iPhone.

  • Turning my old Powerbook into a hifi

    Hi -
I'm looking into putting my old Powerbook into use as a hi-fi. Well, I say hi-fi but it obviously won't be true hi-fi. But anyway, I'm loathe to go out and buy a new "traditional" hi-fi setup since I don't use CDs any more or listen to the radio much. So I thought I'd get a speaker setup attached to my Powerbook running iTunes. Has anyone else tried this?
I'm thinking of buying [these|http://www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/Productrange/Aego_series/Aego_Mspec.asp]. They cost about 100 UKPounds and are apparently very good. Let me know if you've tried something similar and whether this worked for you.
I'm having a party soon so need to make my mind up pretty quick.
    Thanks for any feedback!

    Hi G,
I think you're on the right track. I know nothing about these particular speakers, and if you're looking for reviews on them, you may want to try a site focused on audio, but just fyi: you may use either your PB or an iPod to play your iTunes library. In either case, you'll need either a set of powered speakers (appears to be what you're looking at) or a regular old stereo amp or receiver and speakers. Whichever choice you make, you'll plug the line-out from either the PB or iPod into the powered setup and you'll be set to go. Just wanted to let you know in case you have regular old speakers and an amp/receiver lying around (I have several, maybe due to my age!). Hope the party goes well.
