HT3446 Time Capsule Accounts for Windows 7

I have 2 windows computers and 2 Macs connected to a Time Capsule used as a Hard Drive for a small office. I tried to make accounts but I don´t know how to configure them to be accessed by the windows OS. Is it possible?

Should be possible..
DId you load Bonjour for Windows or the full airport utility for windows onto the Win computers?
If so ping the TC.. can you reach it? It could be blocked by firewall or the windows is in work or public network instead of home.
Once you can ping the TC.. try to open it from explorer..
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
Note windows uses SMB protocol not AFP.. Apple use names that are illegal for SMB.. even though SMB is offered.. make sure TC and wireless names are short,  no spaces pure alphanumeric. Use WPA2 Personal security only with pure alphanumeric passkey.
Setup disk access for WORKGROUP as the workgroup.
Accounts can be a big issue.. if the above don't work, I usually just recommend turning on the guest account with read and write access.
Otherwise I think you will need to look up how to change security in windows handling of passwords.. as the two may not match. Latest firmware for this on the TC might help.

  • Does time capsule work for windows

Will Time Capsule work on Windows computers?

Yes.  It's just a network drive to Windoze.  Once you find it browsing the network (assuming you named the worksapces riht, etc.), it will pop up on the list of network drives, and from there you can assign a drive letter to it and keep it auto-mounted.
However, with windoze 7 home, their new built-in 'backup' won't touch it, or use it in any way, because Micro$uck considers backup to network attached storage a 'premium feature' that mere home users shouldn't have access to.
However, any other backup software that isn't ******** will copy to the drive, if you assign a drive letter to it.  Including 'xcopy /h /e /r /d /i /c /k /y D:\mystuff Z:\backup', assuming you mounted the Time Capsule as 'Z'.

  • Time Capsule settings for Windows vista Guest

I just recently set up my TC (AirPort 7.4.2) for wireless access for my MBP. I have guests from out of town who have laptops running Windows Vista. I've set up a Guest Network but they're unable to connect. Are there specifics steps that need to be taken in order for Windows Vista to be able to access the network? Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks.

Ooops! My house guest was mistyping the password! All is working well.

Hi. I am using a time capsule for few PC s. I have made 5 different account to access time capsule. but in windows when I enter account name and password for one account, i cannot access other accounts, because windows saves username. how can i prevent this from happenning. I really need to access all my accounts and dont want it to save automaticlly.

Why have 5 accounts if you need to access all of them.. just have one account?
Sorry I cannot follow why you would even use the PC to control the Time Capsule. Apple have not kept the Windows version of the utility up to date.. so they keep making it harder and harder to run windows with apple routers.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Is it possible to share a disk on airport extreme for both Time Capsule use and Windows use

    Hello
I was hoping to add some better backup capacity to our home. Can I use the same disk attacheded to the USB port of an Airport Extreme for Time Capsule use for our Macbooks, as well as general use by the windows laptops> If not is it possible to add multiple disks to the Airport Extreme and designate one for Mac Laptops, and the other for Windows use.
    Regards
    Ted

Regardless of the client's OS, you can use the AirPort Disk (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme's USB) port as a 'NAS' device. You also have the option of partitioning it if you actually want separate volumes to be used between Mac or Windows clients. I would recommend partitioning it for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would also format it for HFS+. Normally HFS+ volumes are not readable (natively) by Windows, but the Extreme's File Server will share this drive out with both AFP (for Macs) and SMB (for Windows/Linux) clients.
However, one note of caution. Do NOT use this AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups as this is NOT supported by Apple. Although a number of users have done so, a number of them also post here complaining of corrupted backups.

  • TS2706 I cannot connect to my airport (time capsule) from a Windows PC

Any information on how to connect to an aiport extreme (really the time capsule) from a Windows platform. Have no problem from our Mac's but cannot connect from a windows based platform.  I haven't been able to find any recent posts to help with this problem.

First off, Archon23, what you want to achieve is possible.  I have access to both my Time Capsule (TC) and the USB drive connected to it, from a Win. 7 and Win. XP machine.
Here is what I see from the Windows side of things:
From My Computer - TC USB Drive (Y)
From Windows HomeNet - Time Capsule:
Now getting there is the trick.
One caveat before proceeding:  I am not well versed in Windows Networks, Windows Sharing and Firewall settings so some of the following may not be elegant, may not be absolutely required, and may not be the best way of getting there.  But it is what I did to see both the TC drive and it's attached USB  drive on the Windows side of my network..
1.) First, I added Airport Utility to the Inbound rules of Win 7 Firewall
While poking around my Network Sharing and Firewall settings trying to figure this out, I got a Pop-up recommending I do that.  AND I did that. Oh, and while you are at it, make sure you have a Home network established.
2.) Next, on a hunch, I installed a USB Wi-Fi Adapter (under $20) to my Win PC, enabled that Wi-Fi connection and disabled my Ethernet connection.  I was getting no where on this matter with my Ethernet connection to a DSL Gateway.  But with a Wi-Fi connection to my AirPort Express Base Station, I made progress.
3.) Finally, while poking around my Network Sharing Center some more, one by one I started the various network device Setup Wizards in there, and Trouble Shooters, to find the elusive TC/USB devices in question...AND voila, it worked.   And it's stable, been this way for going on two weeks now.
    Good luck.

  • How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine

How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine.
I have checked that the firmware has been updated to 7.6.4 . Similalrly the Win8.1 machine has been loaded with the update specified in another discussion.

Firstly how are you connecting to the TC.. wireless or ethernet?
Please open a command window and ping it.. ping by name and by IP address.
If ping succeeds at least by IP it should work.
    In windows explorer type
\\10.0.1.1 (or whatever the TC ip is.. that is the default).
Having the airport utility for windows loaded can help the process. As it loads bonjour for windows.
7.6.4 firmware on the TC is useless. It works better on 7.6.1
If the ping does not succeed by either name or IP address yet you have internet through the TC, then your network is setup wrongly. You are have firewalls blocking local IP. Take down all the firewalls.

  • HT1178 I have failed to Map the Airport Time Capsule to my windows 7 HP laptop as a mapped drive, error message is "access denied"

I have failed to Map the Airport time capsule to my windows 7 HP laptop, i followed all the installation steps and i get the error message "Access denied, you do not have permission to access this device, contact network administrator"

Did you install the airport utility for windows?
Is the windows computer set to home as network location.. it will not work if it is set to work or public.
Is the TC setup with all SMB type names, short no spaces and pure alphanumeric. No apostrophe.
Can you ping the TC from your computer? Open a command window and type ping and the tc name or its IP.
No response you will never be able to get connection .. it is usually firewall problem. Turn off firewall and internet security.
If it pings then simply type the IP directly into explorer.. \\TCIPaddress. (eg \\10.0.1.1 if the TC is at default)
That is usually the most foolproof method.

  • Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

Seems like the sender's clock is two minutes ahead of server.
How do I adjust to lax the clock precision between client and server. Which side do I set the properties and what are the properties I need to set? Thanks

    Pam,
from what i have gathered while trying to set mine up, the Time Capsule doesn't like other things broadcasting a wireless signal while it is trying to do the same... or at least, the other computers in the area can only recognize one at a time.
So, in your case, you are using your MacBook Pro to wirelessly share the AirCard connection, right? If so, your computer is acting as a router, which means you have two devices trying to connect your computers to the same network wirelessly. I think this is why your computer isn't able to "see" your time capsule wirelessly. What i would recommend for you is to hook up your aircard to a computer that is not used very often, and (if it has a wireless adapter), turn the wireless adapter off. This way, you have only one device doing the wireless connecting (the Time Capsule in Bridge mode), which will direct internet traffic through ethernet to the connected computer.
So, in conclusion, i just don't think it's possible to do what we want to do completely wirelessly.

  • Using Time Capsule only for back-ups, not as a modem

Hi, We have Comcast modem and router for internet connection. Is it possible to use Time Capsule only for Time Machine-generated back-ups of our Macs?
Is there any complication setting up TC for use as back-up only device?
    Thanks!

You can use TC this way. And it's very simple to setup.
Check out the setup guide here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Time_Capsule_Early2009Setup.pdf
    EDIT:
I've just noticed that they've removed the section "Using Your Time Capsule on an Existing Wireless Network" from the new manual.
Anyway here is a copy of the text under that section in the old guide:
    To set it up:
1 Open AirPort Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities/ on a computer using Mac OS X,
and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows), select your Time
    Capsule, and then click Continue.
2 Follow the onscreen instructions to join your current wireless network.
3 After your Time Capsule is set up, you can use Mac OS X Leopard to set up Time
Machine to back up the Mac OS X Leopard computers on your network. See “Using
Time Machine with Your Time Capsule” on page 27 for more information.
If you’re using an earlier version of Mac OS X, or if you’re using Windows, you can
connect to Time Capsule to share or back up files.

  • Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time.

Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time as either a backup for one and a seperate HD drive for two?

    Yes.
From one viewpoint the Time Capsule is just NAS (Networked Attached Storage) and it supports the file sharing protocols necessary for both Windows and Macs.
From the viewpoint of the Macs it can also be used by Time Machine for backups.
As NAS it can be used for storing files, and there are many backup software packages that support NAS on both Windows and Macs.
In addition from a networking point of view it can serve as a router, wireless access point etc.

  • How do I access the data saved on my time capsule?  for example, if i try to view my photos it tells me that i have 2.4gb of photos and gives me the option to "view with iPhoto"....but when i click on "view with iPhoto" nothing happens...  thanks!

how do i access the data stored on my time capsule?  for example, if i try to view a photo, i get the option to "view with iphoto" but when i click on "view with iphoto" nothing happens.  i'm having similar trouble openning up movies, music, etc.  it appears as though the files exist / saved on the time capsule (because i can see how much storage they consume), but i can't open them.  thanks!

Unfortunately, Apple removed the feature to "browse backups" in Time Machine backups of iPhoto a few years ago.
You have to restore the entire iPhoto library to a separate location to be able to "see" it, and then choose the specific images that you want use.
For complete details, see #15 in Pondini's excellent support document Time Machine -- FAQ.  Check the information in the pink box there.

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.
