My daughter purchased an Ibook G4 - it said no operating system . So she then went on and bought some off ebay -Here is what we got : 2 Original system install disc for Ibook G4 in useable condition : Disc Version 1.0 MAc OS9 & DIsc 1.0 MAC Os X Install DISC 2 which came with Set of 2 replacement discs purchased from Apple and never used. Ibook G4 MAC OS x Install DISC 1 and MAC OS X install DISC 2. Can we use these on teh Ibook that has no OS system on it at all.- It keeps saying : this software cannot be installed on this computer . any suggestions

Brandon is likely correct. Install discs are programmed to check that the model of the computer matches the one that the install disc was shipped with. They are not universal.
I would need more info about your machine (processor speed and amount of RAM installed) to tell you which of OS you are capable of running but most likely Tiger (10.4) would work, possibly Leopard (10.5).
If you are close to an Apple Store you could take the computer there are have them install an OS on it for you. This is something they have done in the past for free. They might be able to install the bundled (iLife) package for your computer as well. Also, you can call support and have them ship you a set of discs for your computer. There would be a charge for the replacements tho.

I think Adobe allows their software to be installed on 2 computers only. However, if say you buy another computer and wish to install PSE on the new computer ( effectively a 3rd computer as far as Adobe is concerned ) PSE needs to be properly uninstalled ie not simply by uninstalling using the operating system's uninstall process. It needs to be uninstalled using the Adobe uninstall process that is contained within the software.
You should then be given a prompt as to whether you will be reinstalling on the same computer or if you wish to remove altogether. If the latter, then all traces are removed and the software can be (re) installed on the new computer.
If, unknown to yourself, the software had been installed on 2 computers and although you or the previous may have wiped the hard drive clean, as far as Adobe is concerned the software is still ' registered / assigned ' to 2 computers.
If the previous owner bought a new computer and installed their PSE on it, wiped the hard drive clean without properly uninstalling/removing PSE thentherein probably lies the prblem.
As Allan Jones said, it 's probably worth your while to purchase your own copy.

If you are trying to change the short name of an account's home folder, do the following:
1. Open the NetInfo Manager in the Applications/Utilities/ folder.
2. Click the padlock and type in your password.
3. Under the list of accounts, locate your account and change the home property of that account to the desired setting. Don't delete or alter any other accounts. If you want to change that account's name, stop here and perform the second set of instructions.
4. In the Finder, rename the home folder to the name you provided in the NetInfo Manager.
5. Log out and back in.
To change the short name of your user account, do the following:
1. Open the NetInfo Manager in the Applications/Utilities/ folder.
2. Click the padlock and type in your password.
3. Locate the admin group in the list of groups, and add the new name to the list of members of this group. Don't delete or alter any other groups.
4. In the list of accounts, locate your account and change that account's name property. Don't delete or alter any other accounts.
5. Close the NetInfo Manager, log out, and then log back in.
The home and short name properties can be changed independently of each other, but System Preferences won't let you change either, and makes both of them identical when you create an account. If an account isn't a member of the admin group, it won't have administrator access. Some people have left themselves without an administrator account on the machine by not updating the admin group properly.
The proper way to prepare an iBook for sale or transfer is to use the system discs that came with it to restore it to like-new status. If you call Apple and give them the model number of your computer, they often have the original system discs that came with it available for a $20-$30 processing/shipping fee. Restore the iBook to its original state, and include the system discs in the purchase. That is the best way to go. (Incidentally, I won't buy a used iBook that doesn't include the system discs in the sale. As far as I'm concerned, they are vital.)

Sadly without the system disk you can't do a lot. I would suggest you enable root user, log in as root and reset your administrators password, however you can't without knowing the administrator password first.
The only solution would be is to obtain the correct system disk or buy a retail copy of Mac OS X. But note, it depends on what version of the iBook you own depends, on what version of Mac OS X you will require.
You can still obtain the system disk or retail disks from online vendors, but they come at a cost.
System disk are grey in color, while retail disk have a big 'X' on it.

The hard drive on my Titanium died and I'm replacing it. I can't find my set of install disks. Can I use a set for an iBook. They are early 10.2. After I got the OS installed, I planned to use my Tiger update and download the various updates. Will this work. If not, are there other suggestions?

Generally, the install package that ships with a Mac purchase is model and build specific and cannot be used on a different Mac model. You can try and if successful, it may not work correctly.
When you say use a Tiger update, do you have a Tiger retail install package? If so, you can use the Tiger retail install package to install Tiger on the TiBook but it won't include all software that shipped with the TiBook.
If you have a Tiger retail install package (non-family pack) that is currently installed and being used on another Mac, technically using this install package on your TiBook is a violation of the single use license agreement so something to keep in mind.

Should I install Leopard on my iBook G4?

I have read some of other people's experiences in these Apple discussions but want pose the question again with the specs of my own computer. I have an iBook G4, purchased in early 2005, running 10.4.11, with a 1.33 GHz processor and 1.25 GB of RAM (I just upgraded from 768 MB of RAM). I am liking Leopard on my new iMac and would like to upgrade to Leopard on the iBook, especially since I could then use Time Machine to back it up easily to an external hard drive. Should I take this step? How much free space on my 80 GB hard drive should I have in order to make this move? (I now have only 11.75 GB, which I know is not enough, as Leopard takes 9 GB, but I use the iBook for work and could conceivably take off some personal items such as music and photos. By the way, I purchased the iBook myself for work, so I am not breaking any work rules to have personal stuff on the computer.)

Thanks to all of you who gave me the confidence to install Leopard on my iBook G4. I did it very methodically. First, I purchased 1GB of RAM, which, when installed, gave me the maximum of 1.25GB of RAM. Then I pared down my music and photo libraries so that I had a much bigger chunk of free space on the 80GB hard drive. Then I installed Leopard. First I waited for the DVD to be verified (a longish process), but then the installation went very smoothly. All in all, it took under 2 hours. I realize I won't have some of the graphic animations in Dashboard, but I think the advantage of having Time Machine will outweigh that. Thanks again, folks, for your advice.

What to look for in a used iBook G3?

Hi, I'm in the process of looking at a used iBook G3 with 640 MB SDRAM and 40 GB HD. Anything I should look for that could make or break a deal?

I believe that only the 900 MHz G3 iBook came with a 40 GB hard drive standard.

Don't pay much attention to the price listed there. It's usually too high. A better check on price is eBay's list of Completed listings. (You will have to sign in to eBay to see the search results.)
If you are looking at that model, a Combo drive (so you can burn CD's) will be standard. It's a nice feature.
If you want to have wireless internet access, make sure that it already has the AirPort card installed because the original AirPort card that any G3 iBook requires is becoming scarce and expensive since Apple stopped selling them a couple of years ago. Plan on spending $130 (or more) for a used AirPort card if it doesn't have one.

How can I Download and use ibooks?

Hi All, I have iMac 10.6.8 Snow Leopard iMac. I want to create and upload a book to ipad using iBook but I need 10.7 or higher.
I have read some of the Forum answers but I am still a bit confused.
If I install Mavericks will that be happy on my iMac and will that enable me to download and use this iBook App please?
Any other clear and simple solutions gratefully received.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again. You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

Why do I have to sign in every time use ibooks

Since the ios7 update, almost every time I use iBooks it prompts me to sign into my appstore account. This is new behavior and is aggrevating. Why is it necessary? Am I missing something?

Pretty sure it's a bug, same problem here. Only started after installing iOS7 7.0.2. It's only happening on my iPad though, not on the iPhone. However, the iPhone (which is logged into iCloud) is not syncing my progress from other devices.

Thank you for the question. You can preview the book you created in iBooks Author in iBooks on your iPad using the following steps:
Preview a book or a chapter on iPad
Connect iPad to your Mac.
On the Home screen of your iPad, tap iBooks.
In iBooks Author, do either of the following:
Preview a book: Click the Preview button in the toolbar, or choose File > Preview.
Preview a chapter: Select the chapter you want to preview in the sidebar, then choose File > Preview Current Section Only.
Note: To preview on an iPad running iOS 7 or later, you need iTunes 11.1 or later installed on your Mac.

you can if your ibook is intel. if it's PPC then you need a firewire DVD drive not USB. also, if you have another Mac, you can boot your in target mode, connect it to the second computer and install leopard from there. The second mac has to have the same architecture as yours (both intel or both PPC).

Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.

You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.

That is incorrect. You can install Windows on a Mac, any Mac, without having OS X installed on it.
To the OP you will need the original system reinstall USB thumb drive that came with your Mac Air if it is older than a Mid 2011 model or if it is newer than a Mid 2011 model you use the Online Internet recovery system.
If you don't have that original reinstall USB thumb drive you can order one from Apple for a small charge. Call Apple and ask to speak to someone Specifically to order a Replacement USB system reinstall thumb drive for your model year. You will need the serial number of that Air. It is etched into the bottom of the case.
