Thunderbolt display: devices not discovered after using Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter
I have an interested problem related to using my MacBook Air in clamshell (closed) mode, connected to a Thunderbolt display. The problem appears to be related to moving my MacBook air between my office and my home.
At the office, I use the MacBook Air with an external VGA display, connected via the Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter. At home, I use the MacBook Air together with a Thunderbolt display. An Apple USB keyboard is also connected to the display.
Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter implicated
The following sequence of events causes the problem to occur:
Use the MacBook air (open) together with a VGA display, connected via a Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter (depicted at right);
Put the MacBook Air to sleep by closing the lid, and disconnect the Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter (I am not sure if the order of these two steps is significant—I usually perform them almost simultaneously when packing up my MacBook Air and getting ready to leave the office); and
With the MacBook Air still closed, connect it to a Thunderbolt display with a connected USB keyboard.
At this point, I would expect to be able to wake up the MacBook Air by tapping on the space bar of the keyboard. However, what I have observed is that this does not wake the MacBook Air.
I can wake the MacBook however by moving or clicking a Bluetooth mouse that is paired with the MacBook Air.
At this point, although the MacBook Air is awake, and the display is working, the USB keyboard connected to the display still does not work. This is the problem, in a nutshell.
Unplugging the USB keyboard from the display, and plugging it back in causes the MacBook Air properly to identify the keyboard.
I used Apple System Profiler to save a list of identified devices at two points in time:
Immediately after waking the MacBook Air by moving the Bluetooth mouse (at which point the USB keyboard was not working); and
After unplugging and plugging in again the USB keyboard (at which point the USB keyboard worked fine).
Many devices are enumerated in the second list that are missing from the first. For example:

Using the Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter appears to be a necessary step to causing this problem to occur. If I merely disconnect the MacBook Air from the display, let it go to sleep, and then reconnect it again, the USB keyboard will work immediately and can be used to wake the computer from sleep.
Some devices are discovered even when the computer is in sleep mode. This is how it should work.
The problem appears to be that when a Mini DisplayPort–to–VGA adapter has been used since the last time the computer was connected to a Thunderbolt display, the MacBook air does not discover devices completely when it is again connected to the Thunderbolt display while in sleep mode.

Using Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter -- any settings on the Macbook Air I need to change?
Going into a meeting with my Macbook Air with Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, which will be connnected to a video projector on site. Never tried this setup before. Will this just work or do I need to adjust any video settings on my Macbook Air?

It sounds like the external display you are using (projector) operates at a smaller resolution than your MacBook Pro. You may want to configure the display preferences in System Preferences for the external projector.

I currently use the mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter so that I can work on a large external vga monitor.
Will this work if the adapter terminates the chain or will I need to connect the adapter directly to the laptop thus preventing me from using any thunderbolt devices?I was just thinking.. It is possible that belkin is support the miniDisplay in that port as well.
Yeah, that was my thinking as well...
The matrox dock is going to have DVI on it, but it doesn't support chaining (i.e. it only has 1 TB port)
Does your external monitor support DVI - let me go look at the Matrox - ugh - don't like it compared to the Belkin.
They're BOTH expensive and, as I don't believe that either is shipping, I'd have to wait on someone else to do the beta testing.
I've never tried a USB>DVI adapter - here are a few from my favorite adapter/cable company, though.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display.

i've read the article above. How can this firmware affect operation under Windows 7 OS? I have a dual boot system and tested several mini dp-vga adapter, all of them seem to either stop working after a while or doesnt work at all. i have a macbook pro 13"(early 2011) and a macmini i5 4gb
I'm having the same problem. When I try to connect to the switch in our conference room (connecting both a flat panel display and/or a projector, both with much higher native resolutions), all I get is 640x480. This is a huge problem to using bootcamp, and I really need to get this to work. I was able to get a higher resolution 1280x800 on a separate, portable display, so I'm wondering if people have the problem with standalone projectors or only with projectors connected to some sort of switch, in my case an Extron MPX423A. I have also tried this in both Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 RC1 (32-bit), with the bootcamp drivers and the latest NVidia drivers, and the behavior is the same all around.

Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?
Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?
Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm? I don't know too much about this stuff. My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it. -

I bought 2 new Macbook Pro 13' , 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7, with 8 Go 1600Mhz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2617).
I have connected a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter in order to show presentations on different LCD projectors but no image appear.
The external monitor is detected but no image is shown. I have tried to change the frequencies: parts of the screen appears but no a correct image. I have the same symptoms with the 2 Macbook Pro. Using old Macbook Pro with the same Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, the slides are showns normally.
I make a test with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and everythings works correctly with both adapters.
Does anybody has a solution?

I had trouble with this. I found going straight to Mini-DisplayPort->VGA or Mini-DisplayPort->DVI worked perfectly but once I added a VGA->DVI or DVI->VGA adapter to the chain the screen would be detected by OS X but the monitor itself would give the "No signal detected" message. I tried all these combinations on the same monitor.
Not sure if it helps your situation but I have noticed some similar issues.
EDIT: Oh, and I have the new MacBook Pro 15inch with Retina all fully updated. I noticed that with my late-2009 White Macbook didn't have this issue with the cables and adapters. -

I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions?
What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro. -

Last month, I've bought a MacBook Pro 15" 2011 Model with 2.2Ghz Intel i7 2nd Generation with AMD 6750M. I've also got a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter in order to connect it to my FULL HD Samsung 23" monitor. The display works fine but there is a lot of flickering going on. Also whenever I set the screen resolution to 1920 x 1080, the screen gets shrinked and moves to the sides. Half of the screen is beyond the limits of the display ,that is, i cant see the left half of the display. I've tried changing the monitor setting also but no use . Tried connecting it to windows (using BootCamp) but still the result is the same. Plugging in the DisplayPort to VGA Adapter disrupts display of embedded 'movies' in OpenOffice
I am creating presentations with embedded movie clips (MP4 videos) using OpenOffice Impress. The embedded videos appear and play just fine on the MacBook Air display. But when I connect a video projector to the MBA via a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and begin the presentation, slides project correctly until I get to the slide with the embedded video; then the slide on the MBA display and the projected image show a blank slide. After that, even with the adpter disconnected from the video projector, the embedded content disappears and I have to quit Impress and restart it; i.e., I cannot continue on past the slide with the embedded video, or even go back to previous slides.
Since I'm now away from the classroom and projector, I can't check to see if the projector has an HDMI input. If it does, will using that connection resolve the problem?
What's going on? Any hope of an effective workaround for a smooth, integrated presentation?
