HT3529 does imessage use up my data

does imessage use up my data?

Only if the game or app requires an internet connection and when not connected to the internet via an available wi-fi network your iPad has access to.
To test if a game or an app requires internet access to function, turn on Airplane Mode before using the game or app. If internet access is required, you will be provided a warning message that internet access is required.

  • How much data does iMessage use to text internationally?

I have a friend in France n I live in Hawaii, and I'd like to know how much data it uses to text there cause I have a limited data plan and I don't want to go over >_<

A single iMessage uses so little data you'd have to send about a thousand just to notice. Each character in an iMessage uses about 0.1 bytes and there are over a billion bytes in a gigabyte. Also it doesnt matter where you are sending it because it goes over the internet. It will be the same where ever.
    Hope this helped!

  • When I am on 3G on iMessege, does it use all my data while iMesseging or use any money?

Hi, I was wondering if when I can't connect to wifi, and I turn 3G on does it use all my data or money to iMessage?

If you use iMessage you use your data plan or wifi.
If you don't want to use your data plan and turn off iMessage in the settings
so you can use your text plan.

  • By what time zone does Verizon use to log data usage?  When I checked my current usage, there is data used logged in at early morning times and I don't have anyone else who is up at these times.

By what time zone does Verizon use to log data usage?  When I checked my current usage, there is data used logged in at early morning times and I don't have anyone else who is up at these times.  I also have 1.8+ GB charged to my allowance that I don't understand at all how it is mine because the highest I've ever logged at any given time has been barely 0.5 GB.  I'm cruising along at .04-.07 GB and all of a sudden appears a 1.8+ GB deduction/usage and it makes me wonder what the ???? is going on.  Is Verizon posting fraudulent usage amounts just to drive up my usage so I have to buy more Gigs?

The time is not the time of actual use, but the time a tower reports the use. The data would have been used anytime prior to that time. Usually, but no always, the usage happened between the time prior and the time reported.
    For example:
    9:00 AM   1.23 MB
    7:05 AM   0.01 MB
    1:15 AM  350.03 MB
    8:00 PM   23.89 MB
This does not indicate 350 MB was used at 1:15 AM. It really tell you 350 MB was used sometime between 8:00 PM and 1:15 AM.
The times are local time zone as far as I can tell.

  • Does imessage use the normal sms part of the iphone?

Does imessage use the normal sms part of the iphone? I am asking since when using imessage I get pictures properly displayed but on normal sms service my service provider sends me a text to say I have received a MMS log into their site to view which cannot be right?

No, iMessages are sent over the Internet via Apple's servers. It is nothing to do with your service providers SMS service.
Check with your service provider that MMS is configured correctly on your account.

  • This isn't a question but rather a warning to anyone using the new OS for iphone 4.  The imessage uses up your data plan like crazy.  I called Apple about it and they said no it's not doing it.  I called AT

The new OS is burning through my data plan like crazy and here's why.  Imessage uses your data plan and not your texting plan.  So every time you send a text message to someone with an iphone it uses imessage and it uses your data, not your text plan.  I couldn't figure out why I was burning through so much of my data plan so quickly.  I called Apple and they said, no it's not the data plan doing it.  I called AT&T and they said, yes, the imessage uses data instead of your texting plan if you are texting to another iphone.  Also, the new OS runs your apps all the time, even when you aren't using them.  So if you are not near wifi your apps are running and burning your data plan.  The AT&T guy took me through the steps to turn off the apps.  You can still use them but they won't be running constantly.  Seriously Apple, you should let people know this.  It does say it in the fine print on the website "data rates may apply" under imessage but most people will never read this.  So my data plan started on October 10th and it's already at 175 megabytes and I only have a 200 megabyte plan.  I've never used more than 50 to 75 megabytes in a month.  Apple get it together and be honest with people and tell them.  Quit denying the problem.  Most people have probably not even discovered this yet.  Wait till you get your bill.

It's not really common knowledge because I've talked to several people today and none of them knew about it.  Also, when I called Apple they said no the new OS is not using data.  Totally wrong answer.  You'd think they'd know about it and at least tell people.  The people who are going to be hit by this are people like me with the 200mb plans.  I just think it's best to spread the word so people can know what's happening.  I still don't know how I went through so much data in such a short period of time.  It's not happening anymore though, not since I fixed everything up last night.
If you are using a free wifi connection, there are no data charges with iMessage.  But in an area where you did NOT have a wifi connection, of course it used 3G and of course you got charged for it (or had it count against your plan limits).
I'll ask again - without a wifi connection, just what did you think was happening?  How did you think your iPhone was able to magically send a message WITHOUT using any data connection?  A little bit of rational thought would have made you realize that there was no way, over a 3G connection (which is a service provided by your cellular service provider, NOT Apple), that you can send or receive ANYTHING without your service provider's plan picking it up.
Nothing abut iMessage has ever hinted that it can, in any way, bypass your service provider when NOT using a wifi connection.

  • Does imessage use data when not in a wifi conection?

how does imessage send a message? does it use the phone signal and send like a normal text message, or does it use the #g network and wifi conection? if it uses the 3g network how much data does it use?

    It uses your data/wifi
Your phone knows when to switch from imessage to sms message because it knows when your texting whether or not the recipient has iOS5 or not if it does the bubbles will be blue(Data/WIFI) if is a regular text it will be green(TXT) hope this helps

  • Does iMessage use data?

I was just wondering if iMessage uses data when you are on the 3G network?  And if it does, does anyone know how much data?

iMessage would use data when not connected to a WiFi network, but should use WiFi if it is connected as that is how it would work with the iPod Touch and iPad (non 3g) models.

  • HT3529 Does imessage work worldwide?

Does imessage work worldwide between iphones?

iMessage does work worldwide. As long as all users have an iPhone and add their email address on Messages, then it will function for free. Note that if your friend does not have iMessage, it will cost SMS/MMS charges by the carrier in World Traveler prices.

Hello I have deleted practically everything please see a photo image.jpg I don't know what else to do, even if I delete what's left it's still won't add to the 3,4 GB IT'S ASKING FOR..
Also how can I have used 12,2 GB when my ipad is practically empty
Also is it true that iMessage takes up space because on apple site it says iMessage is unlimited space and it doesn't affect the usage
I just deleted all my photos but its saying I have 799 MB Usage in settings, how can this be???
It is possible that iMessage is taking up space??? But it says unlimited , I have sent over 1000 photos through iMessage does it matter, please see current settings image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg
I can't understand why it writes 12,4 GB used when my ipad is almost empty of applications and my photos are all deleted but in settings it says I have used 773 mg

This is a problem please help
Also does anyone know what kind of culprit bug may have done this is there another solution instead of restoring
    Helpppppppp, urgentttttttttt

iMessages can take up some space because they consist of data and any data will take up some space. However, I suspect that you have a problem that occurs from time to time with the "other" category on your iPad being the cause of this problem. Something got corrupted on your iPad and that is what is causing this problem.
"Other" consists of stuff that is associated with some apps, but not the apps themselves. Stuff like notes, Safari history and bookmarks, contacts, text messages, email messages, and that type of thing. You cannot see this (the "other") on the iPad itself. You have to connect your iPad to a computer running iTunes and you can see this in the capacity bar. Many times, the only way to cure this is to restore to factory settings and start all over again.
If you do not use a computer with your iPad, the only way to clear this would be to erase all content and settings and start all over again.
Take a look at some of these.
