Hi all,
Like sudude here pointed out that's one way of leaving text as "draft" to message editor. Or you can also select Options > More > Exit editor to do the same. And, next time when you select Create message that previous text should be there as it was left.
But there is also another option to start writing SMS's - with Notes application. Select Menu > Apps > Notes. Write a note and save it. Then for that note select Options > Send note > Send as message. Now your note is copied to message editor and you can send it or further edit and then send. Neat thing here is that when you use Notes application, text can be saved for later editing or use.

I'm wanting to back up my iMac before I add 10.6 on it. All the external back ups require 10.6 & up. So, how can you back it up? My computer already has Time Machine on it.

I don't understand why an external drive would require 10.6...the Mac OS X format (HFS extended Journaled) and partition scheme, GUID, have been used since Mac OS X 10.4. The Time Machine system has been in use since 10.5. Someone may be giving you some bad information.
Check the drives offered by OWC, http://www.macsales.com and see what they have. I have three of their Mercury Elite pro external drives, 2 TB each, and they are great drives. OWC has on-line and telephone help so can answer any questions about compatibility of the drive you are interested in.
An external drive can be partitioned into a partition for Time Machine to use for backup, or another backup procedure, and a work space partition. I setup my drives, for three different computers, to have a backup partition and a Carbon Copy Cloner bootable partition and a storage partition. That way there is a good backup of the system, and a bootable copy of the system so if anything goes wrong I can simply boot (restart holding the Opt key then select that partition for startup) into a working version of the operating system.

You want one backup (ie Time machine) and one (or more) data archive of just all your raw files (drag and drop, or cloned etc.)

One third party app that works on many phones (especially older models, but not all phones) is BitPim ( http://www.bitpim.org/ ) but it can potentially harm/brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing - use it with caution. I have used it successfully to get texts and photos off an old flip phone that was deactivated and had no sd card.
Newer smartphones can download apps that will give you the ability to print out texts.

Turn off imessage in settings/messages, turn off Facetime in settings/facetime, delete the cloud account in settings/icloud and log out of your Apple ID in settings/itunes and app store.

Your Apple ID is used for several services through your iPhone. To replace the previous Apple ID you will need to sign out of it in a few different spots and sign in with the current Apple ID (depending on what Apple ID you choose to use for each individual service). The services you may need to sign out of old Apple ID and into new one could include iCloud, Messages, FaceTime, and iTunes & App Stores. You can see what Apple ID is currently signed in and sign out of it in the following areas: Settings > iCloud, Settings > Messages, Settings > FaceTime, and Settings > iTunes & App Store. click and hold on the bubble, you will now see "copy/more" select 'more'
you can now choose which bubbles to delete by selecting a check mark next to them and then hit trash can

I have been trying to backup my text messages so that they are in a readable format on my computer so that I can read them or print them. I have a number of pictures that have been sent and some important conversations I need to save; however, they are taking up a lot of memory on my phone and I would like to delete them, but still have access to them on the computer. I downloaded a free program called Appandora, but it locked up every time it started to save the second text message thread. The one that it did save was in a .txt file and was very difficult to read. I do understand that the texts are backed up when the phone is backed up, but I want them in a readable accessible file.
