HT3529 iMessage Question

Can I add a phone number to my iMessage send/recieve list without that phone number getting an alert that it has been added?

If you have Send Read Receipts disabled, Messages will only show that the message reached you, even if you read the message.
It does not mean the Messages app was opened and it does not mean you viewed the message.
When he says, "I saw you" it only means Messages shows the text was delivered.

So if I message other apple users, using my iPhone will the number of texts sent show up on the phone bill? Or will only the SMS messages show up on the phone bill?

iMessages are not SMS messages.  iMessages would  count against your data plan if you were not connected to WiFi.  There is an option in settings to send as SMS if iMessage is not available, but the benefit of iMessage is sending via WiFi, with no character limit, and no cost (if used on WiFi)

  • HT3529 IMessage and Group Message question

with iphone 4S if I turn off iMessage and group message and someone sends a message to me and other people, will my reply "reply all" to everyone the message was sent to? Or is it only that when I send to multiple people their responses are only sent to me?

You can send a message to multiple recipients using SMS, MMS, and iMessage.
Group messaging allows you to send messages to multiple people and have any responses delivered to everyone in the group. Group messaging works with iMessage and MMS.
If you send a message to multiple recipients without group messaging in use by the sender and all recipients, an individual message will go to each recipient using either SMS or MMS. Responses to these messages will be delivered only to the original sender in seperate messaging threads.

If you turn off iMessage, anyine sendiny you a text will be sent as SMS.
And turning off iMessage does not stop non-iPhone users from sendding you text messages.
Contact your carrier to temporarily disable text messaging.

  • I don't understand the imessage question when setting up my iPad Air

What is the question asking and how do you answer it?

IIRC, you are being asked if you want to associate email addresses and your iPhone number with iMessages and Facetime. If you don't care to use either app, you can deselect email addresses or skip that step and set it up later. If you want to use Messages and Facetime, and you do not have an iPhone, you have to use an email address as your contact at address for both apps. You can associate multiple email addresses if you want to do so.
If my assumption is incorrect or if my memory failed me, please be more specific.

  • Attachments problems with iMessage - Question marks, empty attachments

    Hello,
I am having a new problem and am looking for advice.  I'm using iMessage across multiple devices - iPhone 6 on iOS 8.1.1, iMac on OS 10.10.1, and iPad Air on iOS 8.1.  I recently, within the past two weeks, upgraded my OS on the iMac to Yosemite.  The problem is that all the attachments... pictures, videos, vCards.. are showing as empty attachments in my iMessage history.  I often refer to my message history for these pictures and files, and the files are not showing any more on my phone.  The images show an outline with a question mark and the vCards don't open at all.  Interestingly, I upgraded my wife's macbook air to Yosemite in the same time frame and she is having the same problem with her iPhone on iOS 8.1.  The craziest part of all this is that the attachments all show up just fine when I open messages on the iMac.  However, I rarely use messages on the iMac so having the attachments there is of no use to me.  I need to be able to see the attachments on my phone.  I have tried logging out of iMessage on my phone and on the iMac.
I have searched the boards for answers and have not found a concise answer.  Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Logan

Bump.. Any help would be awesome.  This problem is driving me nuts.

  • HT3529 iMessage and FaceTime

Hi,  I tried signing in iMessage and FaceTime but it kept asking me to check my Internet connection. In fact I'm sending this question using iPad so definitely I have Internet connection so is this a software issue or a network one? I have restored my iPad once already. What more can I do to make things work? Thanks.

There are a couple of suggestions that worked for users in this discussion.

You can try rebooting your router as well - I know that your Internet connection is fine but sometimes that helps.

  • HT3529 iMessage issue?

I have an iPhone 4. I set my phone to only send iMessages, disabling the send as SMS option if iMessage is unavailable. I've been having trouble because my phone keeps switching to SMS without me being prompted to change the settings. I used to have to select each message to send as an SMS when this setting was disabled, keeping me from sending out too many texts. However, my phone is now switching to SMS before I can even send an iMessage. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    about imessage http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3529
That is how imessage works, if the person you are sending the text to is out of wifi or 3G service it will send the imessage as a text SMS.   See above link

  • HT3529 iMessage appearing in 2 different iPhones with distinct phone numbers but using same apple ID

I and my friend both use same apple ID. When someone sends me an iMessage to my iPhone, it goes to his iPhone with separate phone number also. When I send someone an iMessage from my iPhone, the message will appear as sent from his iPhone also. But the receiving person will get only one iMessage (from my number).
Both of us have ios 6 and separate phone numbers but same apple ID.
    How is this possible?
When I checked setting on iMessage on my phone, send and receive shows my phone number and email address only.
Has my iPhone been hacked by him?
    Please help

Sorry for bugging cheonweb but I just want to be clarified:
    1) If the phone numbers are different but the Apple ID is same, he would still get iMessages sent from/to my Phone number?
    2) Why is it not vice versa? Why do I not get messages sent from/to his iPhone?
    Thanks in advance

  • Ipod 5th gen user considering a new iphone, imessage question.

    Hello all,
I currently have a ipod touch 5th generation, I use the imessage feature a lot to keep in touch with friends all over the world so it does not cost me on my regular cell plan. Now my quetsion is , if I get the new iphone, I don't want the imessages to come through on my cell because all of my friends who I use this feature with have international numbers. If I am using my ipod for imessaging, do I just need to cut the phone off so I won't get any charges for imessages? I just don't want to get a huge bill for imessages on my cell for international numbers. Also, if I download something like Viber and I use my phone number to converse with international friends over 3G, will this be free as long as I have unlimited texting? Please help, thanks!

iMessaging between iOS devices has no carrier chargers for the message delivery itself - it only matters what type of internet data connection your are using.
If your iPhone is on a wifi network, then iMessage is completely free, even if another iMessage user sends to your phone number since iMessages are processed by Apple's equipment, not your cellular carrier's.  In that scenario, your telephone number is just another identifier linked to your AppleID and your iMessage account - it is effectively no different than your associated "can be reached at" email addresses also linked to that same AppleID and iMessage account.
However, if you are not connected to a wifi network, and you are using a cellular data connection for internet access, then some data charges may apply, or some data usage may be applied against your service limits (if you have limits).  This is because an iMessage over your cellular service data connection is just like any other internet data connection, so your carrier does pass along the data, but they do not process the actual message delivery.
So iMessage is no different than any other internet data messaging service - if you are using a free internet data connection, it is free.  If you are using any form of paid internet connection, like your cellelur providers cellular internet connection, then it is effectively not free.
Viber, Skype or any other VOIP service with messaging features has the exact same limitation - they all use an internet data connection, so any charges from your cellular service provider would be related to whether you use those apps & their services over your cellular data connection.  If you use those over free wifi connections, then again, there are zero charges from your cellular service provider, who only cares when you are using their data network for your internet access to use your internet-based messaging services.
Note that SMS message are processed by your cellular service provider, but they do not use your cellular internet data connection - SMS is sent over the same channels as a cellular voice call.  There is no way to use SMS in an iPhone's messaging app and not pay your carrier something.

  • IMessage question

what are somre reasons why an iMessage is sent as a regular text message?

Note: On iPhone, if iMessage is unavailable, the message may be sent as SMS or MMS, depending on content. Carrier messaging rates may apply. You can turn this on or off in iPhone at Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Messages sent using iMessage will appear in a light blue bubble, while messages sent using SMS or MMS will appear in a green bubble.

  • IMessage question - texting, data, etc.

My friend just got the iPhone 3rd generation.  His parents are very strict about texting, so they've disabled it from the plan with their carrier.  But we can easily communicate with each other through iMessages when we are both connected to a wifi service (I am on my iPad).  I was wondering if it cost anything if you sent messages through wifi.  I know it doesn't cost me anything, but I'm primarily concerned if it costs him anything. Also, can you use iMessages without wifi on your phone when you are sending to another apple user, and you don't have texting capabilities?  Just wondering, because we never get to talk outside of school, and this would definitely be a great way to communicate without having to call.

Imessages does not cost anything when on wifi. cellular data would need to be used to do otherwise and if it disabled through the carrier then i dont believe he could.

  • HT3529 imessage sent to a user with no wifi connection

If you send a text message using iMessage to another iPhone user who does not have a wifi connection, will the message automatically get sent via the cell carriers sms service to the contacts phone number?  Or does it wait for the user to connect to wifi?  What happens to the message?

    Dear Johnathan and Apple developers,
I oftem use the iMessage with my girlfriend, she has an iPhone 4S and I just upgraded my old iPhone 4 to iPhone 5. We just updated to iOS 6.1 and we are experiencing troubles with iMessage. We often disable the cell data to save battery, but, for example, if I`m online and she is offline (without data enabled or wifi) and I try to send a message to her, the message is sented as iMessage (blue box) that is marked as received, but she only receives the message when she gets online (sometimes hours later). Sometimes I can do a fast manoever and if the message is not marked as received I can hit the blue box and choose "sent as SMS", but if it is marked as received the only thing I can do is copy the message and try to do this manoever again as fast as I can, before the delivery. This troubles happens with both of us.
I expected if she is offline the possibility of sending the message should be only through SMS. Maybe there is some issue with iMessage server that can`t verify if she is online every time.
This is really messing with our messages, and sometimes we receive lots of unorganized messages when we get online. When I was in my Iphone 4 and we were iOS 5.1 our SMS and iMessages were different conversations in each device  (for some reason that I can`t explain). There is any way to do this again in iOS 6.1? Split the conversations between SMS and iMessage?
Sorry for the long text, I`m an engineer and a tried to be the most metodic I could.
    Thanks a lot
