HT3529 why is it that when sending texts, sometimes it shows in blue and other times in green ?  What does that mean?

Why is it that when sending text messages, sometimes they go through in blue and sometimes in green?  What does that mean ?
My second question is, at times after sending a text it says:  Sent as a text message.....I'm thinking, really? that's what I thought I sent in the first place !
Some one please help me out.......

Good question! 
Blue messages are iMessage conversations (Apple's messaging service)
Green messages are SMS - standard text messages. 
SMS is the acronym for Short Message Service.
MMS is the acronym for Multimedia Message Service (audio, pictures, video can be added to messages).
With MMS turned on, you will see a little camera icon in the bottom left corner of your screen when you are in the Messages app.  Also you will see the word iMessage where you type your text.
