HT3703 I cannot open apple works .cwk

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and all of a wudden I cannot open my Apple Works .cwk files anymore. Can anyone help? I tried using pages, word, preview, and adobe reader. Nothing will open the .cwk files.

To save as a "newer" AppleWorks file (i.e. AppleWorks 6 file format), you'll need to have AppleWorks 6, which will open older file formats from version 5 and then give you the option to save the as version 6 files.
However, your friend will not be able to open these AppleWorks files with Pages: as Peggy and others have pointed out on numerous occasions, Pages can only open AppleWorks word processing files (and even in this case, there are restrictions; as far as I can remember, it will only open documents with floating graphics. Or was it the other way round, and it cannot open files with floating graphics? If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me, Peggy); it can't open spreadsheet files as iWork '05 doesn't have a spreadsheet program which could handle the data. I'd suggest finding someone who has AppleWorks 6 (anyone with a Mac mini, iMac or eMac), opening the files and saving them in a format which Excel can read.

I downloaded newest version of Numbers, as prompted, but now cannot open old work.
When I try to, the message is that I need to download new version.
Because I help run a small business, I have found a work around, for now, with old template, so we can still keep billing (very important)
but I just realized that when printing a saved pdf format copy of an invoice, completed after the
update, the color logo is not printing even though it appears to be there.
I guess this is two problems.
I have a Mac OSX version 10.9.4 and downloaded, I thought, Numbers 3.2.2 (but did not pay for app)

You should still have the previous version of Numbers and may continue to use it.
The previous version is located in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09"
You can tell the difference between the two versions by noting the icon:
Numbers 2.3 Number 3.2

Try resetting your iPad...
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that didn't help, you may need to force quit the Pages app.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the app quits.

Double click on .doc file opens Apple Works not Word 98

I'm using Tiger on a 14" iBook. I have Office 98 installed which works OK running under the classic environment.
Only thing is, I can't get it to start when I double click on a .doc file.
I've been thru all the recommended stuff, select the file, "get info", change the application etc... Whatever I try, it just reverts to Apple Works. When I double click the .doc file, I get Apple Works instead of MS Word.
Has any one got any ideas? Is this because Word 98 runs under Classic?
Also, I can open a word (.doc) document by dragging it onto the dock icon for MS Word 98. But if I try the same with an Excel spreadsheet,(dragging it onto the excel icon) it doesn't work. Tiger doesn't seem to like the .xls extension. Was this extension used for something else?

If it was used as a Microsoft Works document, you may need to convert it to Excel first.
Not sure if Excel handles Works documents, but Appleworks does to a limited extent, and Maclinkplus by http://www.dataviz.com/ will better allow you to be able to handle files of unknown type that are spreadsheets.
To change the application a document opens under control-mouse click a document with that extension and select Open With. Select the Other... and find the application in the dialog to open with, and check "Always Open With" if you want to open all documents with that extension with a specific application.

Pogo website loads and displays but cannot open games; works fine on Internet Explorer.

For about two weeks now, have been unable to open games on the Pogo website; the main page opens but cannot open any games.
All works just fine on IE9.
No work on 8.0.1; installed 9.0.1---still no work as described above.

Surely, am not the only one who cannot load games on Pogo.com. . . .the website loads in but I get a "connection reset" type message each and every time I attempt to load any game. W7Pro 64-bit Dell Studio XPS i7core. Was properly working in F8 and then just stopped doing so; upped to F9 but still have same problem.
Ideas, anyone?
BTW, Pogo works just fine in IE9.

You can open AppleWorks 6 text documents with Pages; AW6 spreadsheet docs with Numbers; and AW6 presentations with Keynote.

Hi! This seems to bee a common problem (i. e. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4094417?tstart=0) and i have it as well. As usual you can't get help here but a lot of inspiration
I recommend to upgrade the firmware using a LAN-connection and try it again. If it's stable keep it that way, if not return it to the store and get a new one.
Before of course make sure there is none of the following settings in your router:
- MAC Adress based filtering allowing only specific clients to connect (unlikely)
- no hidden SSID (wifi's name) (unlikely)
- DHCP turned on. If not, your ATV has to have a fixed IP Adress (unlikely)
- Password and Encryption mechanism is correct
It's 90% the devices fault in my opinion.

Can't open Apple Works 6

Hello,
I'm not sure what happened, may be operating with too much memory being used, but suddenly I cannot open AppleWorks 6. When I click on the icon it bounces once and then nothing. At one point it told me there was an error or damage, but it stopped doing that. I tried rebooting a couple of times. What do I need to do to get it going again?

Many times in this forum your question has been asked and answered. Use the search feature in the upper right you'll find many answers to your type of question.
You may have to empty your Recent Items folder, delete the Appleworks preference file.
These Discussions are enduser helping enduser, not Apple employees answering questions. Apple provides these discussion forums for endusers however, Apple neither monitors nor engages in discussions. Enduser such as yourself when they have extra time answer questions.

ITunes cannot open apple iphone 4 device

Recently i have been trying to sync my iTunes and put new music and other stuff, but a small box appears and says "The iPhone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile device service is not started". I try to restart my laptop and iPhone 4 but it has been saying it everytime I plug it in. I would really appreciate it for helping, thanks

Cannot open Apple Mail

In my Mail program I have two inboxes. The one with my ISP is working fine. My mac.com inbox is offline. When I try to take it online I get a dialog box to enter my password. When I enter my Apple password I get a dialog box saying The MobileMe IMAP server "mail.me.com" rejected the password for user xxxx. As I've tried many times I know I am not entering my password incorrectly. I don't think the problem is with my internet service provider as the email address I normally use has no problems. I have an iMac using Mac OS X 10.6.8 with Safari 5.1.10. Any ideas on what the problem is?

I tried, over and over, to make changes in the loginitems in System Prefs / User&Groups, but again and again the old (deleted) items appear and the added items not. It looks like the changes are not saved correctly. I deleted a couple of plist's but that did not help either. Also restored the Permissions but nothing.
Somewhere there must be a (hidden?) file we have overseen?
Maybe reinstalling (or repairing?) OS X Lion might be the only solution? I doubt.
Perhaps I might hope on your knowlegde another time?

I just installed OS X10.8 on my iMac 2.66Ghz, now I cannot use Apple Works or Photoshop CS and a few other programs.

Is it possible to install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on an external HDD so I can boot from it? I would like to reinstall my old programms and files on the external drive so I can access them and work on them as they are an ongoing project.

Just reinstall the backup you made before updating to Mountain Lion. Next time it would pay to check if old software will run on new system platforms. Your issues have been known about and very well documented over the past two years or more. Snow Leopard is still a good OSX and works well for those not willing to update their software programs.

Gene, those are incredibly old applicaitons that were based on PPC (Power PC) versions of OS X. Beginning with Lion legacy apps that are PPC based are no longer supported. There are numerous tools availalbe however you will need to do a little legwork to find what you want. I would recommend using Google and search using "Appleworks draw and paint replacements Lion" and you will find a lot of hits. Once you have located one that will import your legacy files then you should be all set.

PowerPC is the processor architecture that was used on Macs until about five years ago. Since then, the Mac platform has been based on Intel processors. Until the release of Lion, there was an emulation layer in the Mac OS called "Rosetta" that enabled legacy applications built for PowerPC to run. Rosetta isn't present in Lion; it can't be put back; and therefore PowerPC applications don't work in Lion.
If your Mac shipped with an older version of the Mac OS, you can use your installation discs to install it on a partition of your internal drive, or on an external drive. Boot that installation when you need to use the PowerPC applications, and meanwhile prepare to migrate your data to newer software.
If your Mac shipped with Lion, you can't run PowerPC applications.
