HT3728 AIRPORT UTILITY IS UNABLE TO FIND ANY WIRELESS DEVICE 5.6.1

Ok So I have bought a 2TB Time Capsule, for the past few weeks we have been doing our backups on it etc and just using our already installed Netgear wireless router. Tonight I decided I would "extend an already existing wireless router" - after following all the steps etc and then clicking apply etc, the Airport Utility said that it would need to restart the time capsule etc. After about 5 mins and it looked like it had frozen, airport utility re-started and now all i get is:
"Airport Utility is Unable to find any wireless device. Make Sure the Airport Wireless Device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan"
I have clicked Rescan like 10 times
I have quit and restarted Airport Utility as well as my Mac OSX 10.5.8
I have pulled the Time Capsule plug out of it and restarted it
I have turned of my airport on my computer and turned it back on again
I have read a number of posts - yet nothing seems to give me any more options other than to rescan.

If you are trying to connect the Time Capsule to the Netgear router using a wireless only connection, Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature was designed to only work with other Apple routers. It is extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a Netgear product.
You will need to start over again and perform a Factor Default Reset on the Time Capsule and then re-configure it back to the original settings that you set up previously.

When having difficulties accessing the Time Capsule (TC) via the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the TC wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the TC's LAN ports.
Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.
Finally, if you are attempting to access the TC via an Ethernet connection, be sure that your Ethernet port is NOT configured for Jumbo Frames, i.e., using an MTU of 9000+.

  • On Windows XP: AirPort Utility was unable to find any base stations

hi, I've been using AirPort Extreme for at least a year to connect both my eMac and my Lenovo Thinkpad which uses Windows XP. yesterday my Thinkpad was infected with a virus and I went through a lengthy remote session with Norton Antivirus tech people to get rid of it today. Sometime in the middle of the session the Thinkpad stopped being able to connect to the AE wireless network. I got back on the internet by plugging the Thinkpad directly into the router.
Now on the AE utility it says "unable to find any base stations." so far I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the AE utility and unplugging and restarting the AE base station. On my eMac everything seems to be fine.
    Please help!

Thanks for your instructions. Basically the same results happened. Is there something else I should be doing on the PC notebook end to connect? The AirPort Utility on my PC still doesn't see any base stations. So using the Access Connections setup the only way I could see to connect with a password was what I described in the previous post. Access Connections sees my network, but fails to connect to it.
Just to be clear, there hasn't been any problem with my notebook seeing the network. For a long time until recently it was seen by the AirPort Utility on the PC. When Access Connections fails to connect it asks if I want to configure the network and there's a bunch of settings. Connection type: infrastructure or Adhoc, Wireless security type "use static WEP keys", "Use Wi-Fi protected Access - Pre Shared Key (WPA-PSK)" - that seems to be the right one, so I choose it and under Properties there's more options. Access point authentication, WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK; I've tried it both ways. Data encryption: TKIP or AES, I've been using TKIP. Under Pre-Shared Key, there's the only box I see to enter a password (see previous post).

  • Airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless device

Installed Airport Extreme connected to my PC running XP Pro. Configured my wireless network successfully. Updated to Aiport Utility for Windows ver 5.5.2 and the Airport Utility shows the 'unable to find an Airport wireless device' message and the 'Rescan' button. I uninstalled the upgraded Utility software, unplugged the Airport Extreme, installed the original software from the supplied disc, held down the reset button while plugging the power back in and waited till I got the amber/green fast flashing lights at which time I released the reset button.  No change. Then upgraded the Airport Utility back to 5.5.2 and still no change.  I can connect to the web from my PC and to an open wireless network named Apple Network f9561d.
Any help getting access to my Airport Extreme greatly appreciated. Thx

PC was/is always directly connected to Airport Extreme via ethernet. Windows XP Pro firewall always has been disabled (double checked). No firewall software.  Disabled PC Tools malware protector.  No virus protection or scanning software.
Only things showing in toolbar are NVidia Settings, Windows Volume Control, Network Connection icon,Safely Remove Hardware Icon and the time.
Don't have anything running that would block any ports.
Airport Utility for Windows is version 5.5.2.
Did another factory(?) reset as described before and pressed 'Rescan' button 15 times with no change. Devices connected via wireless are Nexus smartphone & HP laptop running Vista. All can access Internet, but slowly.
Tried rebooting PC several times with no difference. Tried plugging the PC ethernet cable into different ports in the Airport Extreme before I realized that I could always access the Internet from the PC so I was wasting my time : )
Tonite I unhooked my DLink wireless router, hooked up the Airport Extreme, installed the software, configured the network (perfectly) and then checked for and installed the
Airport Utility software upgrade (no others). As soon as it finished installing, I ran it and ended up with the error. I didn't install anything else or even run any other software. I saved the configuration, checked for and installed the upgrade.  I haven't changed ANY settings on the PC or run any software other than Firefox to create my Apple account to report this problem.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort base stations...

I recently purchased a new AirPort Extreme base station 802.11n, and I followed the manual to get it set up. I installed the software, but when I launch AirPort Utility it cannot detect my base station. (I get the above error message).
I've got an old G4 desktop mac (QuickSilver model) running OSX 10.4.10, and it's got the original AirPort card installed. I've made sure AirPort it turned on in my menu bar.
I decided to set up my base station by connecting an Ethernet cable directly from my base station into my Mac, and set up my network that way. But as soon as I try it wireless, then AirPort utility looses the base station.
My base station is connected to a Netgear ADSL2+ Modem Router DG834. (The router and my internet connection are working fine). I've got all solid green lights on the router and the base station.
Is there some compatibility issue with my old AirPort card and my new base station? Or do I have a faulty card maybe?
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks, Tom.

I have the same setup as you and I had problems like yours. For some reason the old airport card doesn't seem to work with the new airport extreme base station if you are using WEP encryption. WPA works fine. In order to connect to your new base station so that you can administer it with the new Airport utility try this first: If the airport icon is displayed on your tool bar, click on it and select other. Enter your network name and password. With a little luck you will now be connected to your base station and it will be found by airport utility. If that doesn't work. Press the rest button on the back of the base station and hold it for at least one minute. That should completely rest your base station so that it is not encrypted. You should then be able to select it from the drop down menu when you click on the airport icon on the tool bar. Once you are connected, airport utility will find it.

  • When trying to set up my time machine I get this message:  Airport Utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices.  I am connected to the internet.  What's the problem?

I'm trying to set up my time capsule.  I'm having trouble. Please help

    Hi Angela,
Had (and having) the same issue from Windows 7 on my TimeCapsule (TC) ..... Not sure how to fix it but I have a workaround:
    1) Make sure you are getting your internet connectivity from the TC instead of your ISP's modem (turn off wifi on the ISP's modem)
    2) go to windows menu and type CMD on the search box, that should get you a black screen. Type IPCONFIG and note the numbers on the Gateway (mine is 192.168.1.1)
    3) Open Airport utility and go to File > Configure other
    4) Type the Gateway from step 2 and your TC password (if you didn't change it, it should be the serial number f your TC, found on the bottom sticker)
    5) you should be able to see yout TC settings.
Hope it helps. I had a big headache when setting TC on my Windows laptop.... (but none on my Macbook) :-)  Good luck!

  • AirPort Utility is unable to fine any Apple wireless devices.

Just installed Airport Extreme. Went beautifully:
    - iMac (OSX 10.5) can connect wirelessly to Internet,
    - IBM ThinkPad (XP, SP-2) can connect wirelessly to Internet,
    - iMac can print to printer connected to the USB port of the AE
But if I try to administer the AE from IBM ThinkPad rather than from he iMac, though, and the AirPort Utility simply responds that "AirPort Utility is unable to find any Apple wireless devices [RESCAN]. Even though it is currently connected to the Internet using one .
Do I have to join a network or otherwise tell he Windows machine about the AE somehow for it to "see" it? I don't know where to turn.
Apple's doc on this subject is typically nonexistent.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I do not believe that I solve this easily. I have restarted everything, connected directly wtih CAT6, patched my XP, reset the AE, etc. The ThinkPad is a work computer, and I believe that my issue is most likely related to some level of super-firewall-encryption-keep-me-same-from-everything kind of stuff that has been installed by my company, stuff which I am not going to try to find, remove, or shut off just so I can configure the AE from here.
I have an old XP desktop connected to the AE through CAT6 that is able to read and manage the AE's configuration, and of course my iMac sees it perfectly. That will be good enough for now.
Thanks to all who suggested solutions.

  • Unable to find apple wireless device

    H
My connection to the internet was created by a technician from the ISP company who came and fitted everything and for my iMac it appears fine, as I can connect to the internet with my iMac but I am not sure how.
When I try to connect other hardware to the network eg iPod touch and Macbook. When I run the airport utility I get the response that Airport utility was unable to find any Apple wireless device.
I know that it maybe something very easy to fix but does anybody have any ideas, I can't find any suggestion in the Airport extreme user guide.
Look forward to you comments and help.
    Thanks

    James, welcome to the discussions!
    Try the following.
    Power down your Extreme.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Extreme directly to your computer.
Now open AirPort Utility again and your Extreme should be identified so you can set it up. Once you have it configured, you can disconnect the ethernet cable if your computer will be connecting wirelessly.
    Post back on your progress.

  • "Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport after restarting"

Airport Express B has been working great for two years, and suddenly it can't be found in Airport Utility.
When I hard reset it, and re-set it up again, I go through the whole procedure, using the Utility to write the new settings : "The settings for this Airport Express have been successfully updated...waiting for Airport Express to restart" and at that point nothing happens - the light stays continuously green, no restart, and shortly afterwards I get the failure message "Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport wireless device after restarting".
I come out of Airport Utility, reopen it, and it can't find the Airport Express. Nothing. A £65 brick that has ceased to be, and this forum is full of people with similar problems. I've tried all of the fixes, including hard-wiring it using Ethernet, and again it goes through the whole procedure abut when trying to restart the AE, fails to find it.
Are Apple making any response to these issues ?

Thanks Martin - I can download it from the Apple website, according to this discussion :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1085243&tstart=30
My concern is that a) it may not work with an Intel MBP, and that it may break my Airport - totally. Could you let me know what you're running it on ?

  • "Airport Utility was unable to find your airport wireless device"

I recently bought an Airport Extreme to replace a D-Link DGL4300. My network is as follows: DSL > Modem > Airport Extreme > Ethernet and Wireless clients (wireless clients include my iMac and my wife's MacBook). This worked fine for about 2 weeks, until my wife's MacBook started having connectivity issues. I did a soft reset on the Airport Extreme, and . . . poof. No internet for anyone. I did a hard reset and used the saved profile that had previously worked (for at least my computer), and after the Airport Extreme restarted, I received the dreaded "Airport Utility was unable to find your airport wireless device". I have repeated this cycle several times with complete power-downs of the modem, the Airport Extreme and all clients, with no change in result.
What's odd is that even though Airport Utility can't find the Airport Extreme, my home network works fine (i.e., all clients can talk to an internal media server and each other), but there is no internet at all. Any ideas?

Until you can complete the configuration process, try connecting your Mac to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable to see if that allows AirPort Utility to see the Extreme.

  • My Windows XP AirPort util and Bonjour can't find any wireless device

I have both macbook and a PC laptop.
I just started using my TimeCapsula and all features (Internet gateway, access to the USB printer and the external harddisk) are visible and working fine when using my macbook.
My PC wireless card seems to be working fine too and I can access the Internet using the Airport gateway.
My problem is that Airport Util and Bonjour on my PC "can't find any wireless devices" (even though It is clearly working fine) and therefore don't detect/mount the external drive or the Printer.
    Thanks!

How do your Extreme and Express connect to one another? Wired Ethernet between the two, or wirelessly?
Try unplugging the Express. Does that change anything?
Wireless interference could cause the symptoms you're describing. Even though you did nothing to your wireless network, the presence of other wireless networks or introduction of nearby devices will bring interference where there was none before.
AirPort and Bluetooth: Potential sources of interference for wireless devices and networks
Try changing wireless channels; use "automatic" unless you have reason to use a specified channel. Try checking "interference robustness". Altering these settings may help, but they could make things worse.
If you are unable to configure a device over Airport, or changing a setting leaves you unable to configure it wirelessly, connect its Ethernet port to your computer's Ethernet port and Airport Utility should find it.
As a last resort, try a "hard reset" followed by re-configuring the Extreme, Express, or both. Start by removing your Express from the network. Re-configure the Extreme and see if that fixes things. If it does, add the Express to your network and re-configure it as well.
    AirPort troubleshooting guide
I open airport utility ... can not locate any of my wireless devises, airport extreme base,, airport express, apple tv, wifi printer.
AirPort Utility will only detect Apple AirPort base stations (Extreme, Express, Time Capsule) for purposes of configuring them. It is not designed to detect or configure other wireless devices like your printer.

  • My airport utility says it cannot find any airport wireless devices, even though I am accessing the net via my wifi.  What's up with this?

My airport utility says it cannot find any airport wireless devices, even though I am accessing the net via my wifi.  What's up with this?  Also, I cannot connect to my Photosmart b209a printer, though a different computer - same Macbook Pro can.  I tried redownloading the software, but in the setup I get a "device not reachable" message:  "However to continue configuring the device in network, your Mac must have access to the device. So please make sure that your Mac has access to the Network ..."  I've checked my network on the system preferences and it's properly connected.  I'm on the net as I do this.  Tis very frustrating, and any assistance woud be appreciated.

Airport Utility is for administration of genuine Apple Base Stations. If you have a different Brand, Airport Utility can do nothing for you.
    I think they're using ethernet.
To connect a Printer via Ethernet, no password is needed.
We already tried the password for the internet and that did not work...
If a password is required to connect to the Internet, then WiFi is likley being used, and that WiFi password is the one needed for the Printer connect wirelessly as well.
What make&model Printer? Is it indeed a Wireless Printer? Most connect via USB, but that would force it to use a specific computer to assist in printing.

  • Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport device after restarting.

    - I just updated the firmware on my base station (it a white dome?? i think snow?) to 5.7
    - I am running AirPort Utility 5.5.2 (also recently updated)
    - I have (3) AirPort Expresses (just updated firmware yesterday) and now are not being seen in the airport utility. They had been running for about two years just fine.
I have done a hard reset and was then able to see the Airport Express and go through set up. Upon finalizing the set up I get this message:
"Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport device after restarting."
This is happening with all 3 AirPort Expresses

    Hello !
I had the same kind of problems when I upgraded to the latest version of Airport (5,7).
The Airport express seemed to have been disconnected, and nothing I could do to reconfigure it, after hard resetting it, seemed to be working.
I did two or three hard resets before remembering having been in a situation like that a while ago.
I went back to the Mini, **deactivated the firewall (in the "preferences" panel), then deactivated also the firewall of the Modem/router provided for my internet connection. Then I went in the other room and did another hard reset of the Airport express, came back in the mini's room, opened the Airport utility, the icon of the Airport express was already visible (which wasn't the case before... ), did the re-configuring.
The reconfigured Airport express reappeared very quickly, then I reactivated the firewalls of the Mini and the router. Voilà !
It took less than two minutes !
And since then the Mini have been streaming music without a glitch to the Airport express.
I hope this will help you and others !

  • Airport Utility unable to find "Apple Wireless Devices"

I have a windows7 acer notebook and the airport utility can no longer find my time capsule.
My internet connection is fine and I even have the time capsule mapped as my Z: drive and can access it but the airport utility cannot see it.
    Any thoughts?

The solution to this after you get the brain dead apple message is to go to the file menu in airport and select configure other. Then enter 10.0.1.1 and this will bypass apple's brain f-rt and simply open the configuration screen for the airport.
You can use the same method for airport express extending your network, although you will have to do some research under the advanced menu to get that IP address. My express is currently 10.0.1.39. Keep these in a textedit note on your computer for easy access. Every time I change my airport password on my base station both my airport expresses will go brain dead, and about half the time the base station disappears too. Now I just smile and use this solution.
I am certain that most apple geniuses are not aware of this solution, because this problem is all over the net with no solution. Its pretty obvious Steve Jobs never sets up his own airports.

  • Working network, but airport utility unable to find any network devices

    Hi
Can anyone help. I have a stable network which has been working fine for ages. I have an airport extreme + express(airtunes)X2. I was having problems with my printer and ran airport utility 5.3.2 which failed to find any of my devices, but my airport card has no trouble connecting to the network and internet. I also note that itunes no longer sees my remote speakers. I have re-booted everything with no change. All software is up to date on OS 10.5.6.
    Any ideas?????

    Hi,
I have the same problem. I'm very confused right now...I have one Mac and one PC that have both been able to successfully get online with the AEBS I have. A couple of hours ago, though, the wi-fi connection went dead with the PC. The AEBS has been showing a solid green light all this time, though. The Mac is online--and thank goodness because I wouldn't have been able to look or ask for help, otherwise! And our other various wi-fi enabled devices (ie my mom's iPhone and my iPod touch) have been able to get online, too. It's just the PC that doesn't want to work, for some reason.
I tried turning off the firewall to see if that would help anything. It didn't. I also tried rebooting my PC and that didn't work. Then I unplugged the AEBS for a couple minutes to see if that would help anything, but it didn't. And then I went into Airport Utility on the PC, but the AEBS isn't showing up at all. Yet when I go into Network Connections and view available networks through Windows, it sees my network and I've got full bars in terms of reception.
I'm very confused here. I really don't know what to do. :S Anyone have any suggestions? I'd definitely love to hear them.
