HT3728 Resetting my Time Capsule

Will resetting my Time Capsule as it functions as a router delete the data stored on the hard drive?

No, resetting the Time Capsule will only affect the network settings for the device.
To "lose" the data on the drive, you would have to invoke a dedicated disk "Erase" command.

I lost the disk for the time capsule and am using a windows based computer.  I would like to reset the time capsule password.  How can I do that?

    Hello,
    I have same problem.
Dell Vostro (Win7) to Timecapsule (7.4.2) using WPA2-Personal = fails authentication
Dell Vostro (Win7) to Timecapsule (7.4.2) using LAN = success
iMAC (OSX 10.6.3) to Timecapsule (7.4.2) using WPA2-Personal = success
MacbookPro (OSX 10.6.3) to Timecapsule (7.4.2) using WPA2-Personal = success
Have checked passkeys, all equal. Dell 'sees' network, and can identify protocol, SSID etc no prob.
So, question.. is there a difference in vendor implementations?

  • HT1178 reset my time capsule and connect it directly to imac only for back up

I want to reset my time capsule and start a new complte back up ..How to reset it and use it directly connected to may imac?

Your little comment in the profile.. it used to work before Mavericks.. might be better to fix it and use it still as part of your network. The problem is the TC is a purely network device.. It is not at all easy to use stand alone. You cannot connect directly to it by USB. It really has to be part of the network.
I have used them plugged in by ethernet to a computer that connected to the internet by wireless. That is messy to setup but works. I will need some info to do it.
How does the iMac connect to the network.. and what IP does it get??
From that I can give you setup but with due warning, this may still have network issues as those bugs are in Mavericks. And you could save yourself the effort and just try to get it working as part of the existing network.
OR.. IMHO much better solution in this case. For desktop type computer like iMac.. plug in a USB drive.. Or FW800 or even thunderbolt if you have need for real speed. Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2. Price wise.. USB3 is now same price as USB2 so that is the best choice if your Mac has USB3 ports. Thunderbolt is still very expensive. FW800 is better than USB2 but is a dead duck.. Nothing you buy will be useful as the port is being phased out.
But even USB2 will work faster, and be more reliable than a TC.
My other suggestion then is to use CCC or SuperDuper and keep Time Machine as a secondary backup for incrementals. You can produce easily a fully bootable backup drive using CCC. Superduper I heard had issues but that might be fixed now. A bootable backup means if you have a disk failure simply boot the computer from the backup. It is hugely superior method. TM can also continue to be used as it works well for incrementals and restoring applications if that becomes necessary.
Just indicate what you want and we can suggest a way forward or give details on the fix with Time Capsule.

  • Can't reset my time capsule using reset button and I don't have the password to get into reset it.

I can't reset my time capsule b/c the reset button broke off when my time capsule fell off my shelf. I can't remember the password to the disk or time capsule to do a manual reset and I can't access the time capsule. Any suggestions around this?
    Thanks.

Bob's suggestion is the best, as the old passwords should be stored on that computer.
If you need to do it .. the hard way.. just open the TC.
You need a heat gun (hair dryer on hottest setting works fine).. to heat the rubber mat up to very hot.. I usually take 5min or more just heating it, evenly as possible. Lift on one corner and keep heating whilst peeling off the rubber. I use a pair of leather garden gloves as it needs to be so hot you cannot hold it for long.
Really hot the rubber easily peels off with all the glue on the rubber.
Now undo the 10 small philips head screws and carefully lift up the aluminium base plate. There is a fan plugged into the board so don't pull. You can disconnect the plug carefully and lift it completely off.
You can then press the reset switch with a small screwdriver or the like.. careful not to short anything if you use metal.
The plastic lever should still be rolling around inside the TC.. when I look carefully at the plastic, the lever is inserted later.. not part of the one moulding.. there are two plastic stakes, which are heated and bent down like a rivet to hold the lever in place. You may be able to relocated the lever onto the plastic stakes with some glue.. use a good 5min epoxy rather than instant glue.. although on ABS plastic the instant glue works very well. Use the glue under and on top but a tiny amount, otherwise you will simply glue the lever to the body and it will never work again. You might be able to make it stay.. just be very gentle if you ever need to press it again.
You can try a more permanent repair.
Plastic flexing as hinges is not an engineering solution .. but you can get a scrap of metal, thin brass would be ideal... drill a hole in one end and use a small dia screw.. I would tap it and run a screw from the inside, using a short screw so only the end of the screw is visible. Coat the inside with silastic so it cannot short anything. Depends on your handyman type skills I guess.
Strange that it would break.. Must have hit hard!!

  • Reset password time capsule

What is the default password, when u Reset a time capsule 2nd gen

Sorry, I am having a hard time following this.
so I thought I would use a paperclip and tap the reset point on the unit.
If you reset the Time Capsule, it will not appear in AirPort Utility at all until you start over and reconfigure it again.
Open AirPort Utility, click on Other WiFi Devices, then click on Time Capsule. That will get the setup started again so that you can enter names and passwords.
If the Time Capsule does not appear under Other WiFi Devices, then you did not reset it correctly. Hold the reset button in firmly for 10 seconds and then release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart again. Now open AirPort Utility and do the setup again.

  • After hard reset my time capsule is not found in airport even though its light is green so cannot reset

After hard reset the time capsule is not found in airport even though i have reconnected in proper order - says backup disc not found

Something is wrong because a hard reset will never leave the TC with green LED.
    What version TC.. what firmware??
    What OS on the computer?

  • Hi,  how can i reset my time capsule ?

Is it safe to unplug the power line to reset the time capsule ?

What you are asking about is a restart.  It's OK to pull the power plug if there are no other devices backing up to the Time Capsule at the time.
If you don't want to pull the power cable, it is possible to restart the Time Capsule using AirPort Utility. If you do not know how, tell us what operating system you are using on your Mac.
Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X  Version that you see there.

  • HT201514 Can I reset my time capsule and restat

Can I reset my Time capsule and re start?

You do not need to reset to restart.
    Reset means changing settings..
Restart means power off.. power on. Since it doesn't have a power switch we just pull the power cable usually.
I am unclear what the question is though?

  • How do i reset my time capsule without a password?

    Hi.
I just bought my Time Capsule. I started it up and registered it and so on.
Then I used the network to backup my computer, but because of the power got shut off during the night
it stopped backing up my computer.
Now I wanna backup my computer, but it wont let me because it wants a password.
I didnt give it a password, but just to make sure I tried every password I could think of, but nothing.
No I would like to ask:
How do I reset/format my Time Capsule with out using a password?
I tried in disc utilities but it doesnt come up (im using an ethernet cable) and nothing.
    Please help me!
    Kind Regards
    Emil

    That is strange.
The default password is public.. just try that.
If not a soft reset, and it should reset just the passwords.
Otherwise do a full or factory reset.. it will not erase the disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
You can do that from inside the airport utility .. not from disk utility.. but use vs 5.6 if you are on Lion OS.

Download the regional version.. ?? If that is required.

  • True hard reset of Time Capsule

    Hi,
I recently bought a Time Capsule that I set up at home and works fine.
Now, I going to live to NYC for some months and I'm thinking about bring it with me.
My question is about different regulations in radio frequency in some countries. I remember that when I set the TC up for the first time, the Airport Utility asks me about the region where I live. I answered in Europe. Here, there is no legal possibility of using channels 140-165. So, when I choose Wireless Manual Configuration I can't select these 140-165 channels.
But in USA, I can use the higher channels that now I can't select.
I've done the different resets explained in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728 but after none of them, when I newly set up the TC, the utility asks me for the region where I live.
    I use Airport Utility 5.5.1 a TC 7.5.1
    Thanks,
    Mike

If you purchased the Time Capsule in Europe, you won't be able to "convert" it for full use in the U.S. and Canada.
You are resetting the device back to the factory defaults for the region in which it was sold. But, it's not possible to change a European version to the U.S. or vice versa.
The following information and chart may help you find the channels that will work in both regions.

  • I would like to reset my time capsule since there are old files which I don't need any more. How should I do it?

Everything is working fine, I just would like to delete the old files and buck up the new one.
    What steps should I take?

This will make it fresh-from-the-factory clean.
If the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule isn't accessible from AirPort Utility, the Factory Default reset can be accomplished by using the reset button.
    1. Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
    2. Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
    3. Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
I'm not sure if that affects files on AirDisk, but you can easily erase the disk in AirPort Utility after you do the above reset.

  • How do I reset my Time Capsule?

I completely lost my connection with my Time Capsule. Can I reset it completely (the type of reset that allows me to change the name of the piece)?
    Tks

Just insert a pointy object into the "reset" button (at the back) for about 6-8 seconds. That will reset the TC "as new". Although if you have things on the drive, you'll also need to wipe that with Airport Utility (Disks tab).

  • I need to reset my time capsule/airport every day - time capsule has green light but I don't see any wifi signal on my mac and other computers.

as many of you do, I use time capsule as airport, too...
It worked fine for 6 months or so after I bought the new time capsule. (I bought it in September 2012.)
Since the beginning of this year, I had to reset, and power off and plug it in almost every week, then now I need to reset and power off and back on again every day...
When I first set up the time capsule, I followed the instruction with the manual.
But, now I am so lost and don't want to reset every day for wifi connection.
Anyone has problem like me or knows how to solve this issue?
    Please help..
I have MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.4 & my roommates have PCs. (just in case if it helps...)

For PC it is important the wireless has names that are compatible.. short.. like 10 characters.. but 2-20 is fine. no spaces.. and pure alphanumeric.
Use WPA2 personal only.. with pure alphanumeric password .. again 10-20 characters should be fine.
The latest firmware is a dud. Go back to 7.6.1
Open the airport utility.. click on the TC and holding the option key click the actual version number..
Go back to 7.6.1 is simple.. just select it and away it will go.. ignore future requests for upgrade.. you can also tell the utility not to check weekly for updates. You will need 5.6 utility for this I think..
    So do the firmware downgrade.
Then do a factory reset and follow the name information above.. for TC name as well btw.. wireless name/s and disk share name.. which by default is data and that is fine.
    So some instructions in...
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
You can also load airport utility into a pc and get access to all the settings.  Untick the box for firmware updates.. it will still bug you occasionally.. regardless of the setting.. just ignore it..
You might still need to do the occasional reboot of the TC as well.

  • After hard reset of time capsule, airport utility cannot setup again. "an unexpected error occurred. try again"

After starting airport utility, it searches and i select my time capsule. AU grinds for a minute and comes back with "An unexpected error occured. Try again."

    Hi Philjp,
If you are having issues connecting to your Airport Time Capsule, even after a factory reset, you may find the following article helpful:
Apple Support: AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3

  • Will i lose my data if i reset the time capsule?

my time capsule stopped working, i unplugged it and when i plug it again, it flashes amber. then the airport utility finds it, because the time csapsule is reporting a problem, when i try to continue, it fails. i want to reset it to see what happens but i'm concerned i will lose my latest backup (time machine)... what do i do?

Reset the TC does not do anything to the hard disk. But you should save the current setup which should be offered to you after you reset. How old is the TC? They do go bad, in which case the files on the hard disk will no longer be accessible unless you get it repaired or have the disk removed. It is good to record any password you have set particularly if you have set a disk password rather than a just using the TC password. When you reset all that is lost.
