HT3748 mail requires force quit daily - advice
I use the latest macbook air all uptodate.
I use mail with my gmail account as well as three work related exchange addresses.
After any period of time resting, it hangs and I have to force quit and re-start?
Common problem?
This is happening on my home G5, work PowerBook and MacBook over two different POP accounts. Eudora can download the mail but the OS X mail app keeps hanging on messages.
When I use Eudora to delete the offending message OS X mail simply hangs on another one.
I was really getting to like OS X as Eudora has grown long in the tooth. But it appears that OS X mail still isn't ready for primt time if it has a serious problem like this.
I'll keep searching for an answer and call Apple tomorrow since I have some time left on my new MacBook.

Lion Mail can't send/receive and requiring Force Quit.
After Lion 10.7 , Mail Version 5.0 (1244.2/1244.3) can't send or receive (to smtp or pop servers) as usual with Snow Leopard. In addiction, Mail seems hanged and is not quitting graciously... requiring Force Quit.
Today I noted a lot of users reporting Mail problems after Lion, and Apple site says there was only a minor changes at Mail authentication methods. I tried everything they said... and everything communities said. Nothing works.
Is Apple really working on Mail reported problems ?I get emails with my sbcglobal and ymail but i cannot send any email!! this is getting very annoying. It used to work just fine on snow leopard. I even tried using the same setup that I have on my iPhone, same smtp etc and nothing seems to work...

Photoshop CS5 requires "Force Quit"
Photoshop CS5 requires “Force Quit”
I leave Photoshop CS5 open with no active files loaded and return to find it unresponsive and requiring me “Force Quit”. Amount of time it takes for this to happen varies.
I’ve tried reducing RAM, increasing RAM, discontinuing Suitcase (someone mentioned font auto-activation plugin as a possible culprit).
I was going to reinstall Photoshop to see if that would help but am not sure about the best way to do so or whether there may be other issues. Also thought about updating to CS 5.5, but with CS6 around the corner, I’d rather wait. Besides, it may not be an application issue. You mentioned trying a number of things... DId you Quit Photoshop and launch it afresh after making each change so that you were testing with a fully reinitialized copy? I mention that because not doing so can really muddy the water when trying to troubleshoot, and might cause you to miss things that actually help. It is sometimes a good idea to log out and back in again for each test.

Keynote freezes, requires Force Quit, and resets my hot corners?!
I wonder if anyone else is having the same problem.
I'll be either rehearsing or running a presentation, and the slide or build won't progress. The screen is frozen and the only way out is cmd-opt-esc, which force quits the app.
Unlike others on the forum, my files aren't going missing when Keynote freezes, but I do lose the last 10-15 minutes of work. EXTREMELY frustrating, I can't imagine how p***** I'd be if I lost files.
But I wonder if anyone else is having this Hot Corners issue? I have two corners that reveal the desktop, and one that starts the screen saver. When KN crashes and I force quit, I have to open system preferences/desktop to get my hot corners working again.
This started earlier in the year, I can't remember when.Happened again

5) More people have had this issue
6) I lose work every time and is guaranteed to happen within a hour of editing and presenting

Safari is using 5 to 6 GB of memory (of 8) and everything comes to screeching halt, requiring force quit of what little I have open. Frustrated, I switched to Chrome. This worked for awhile but now I see Safari is still 'there' in the Activity Monitor, doing I know not what, as I never opened the app.
Sometimes the memory sink happens immediately, sometimes it builds up over time. But it always happens regardless of what else is opened. I find I have to keep checking the activity monitor to make sure Safari has not snuck in there, even though I am not using the Safari browser. I tried to throw Safari in the trash but the system would not let me.
This is a brand new imac, only 2 weeks old and I feel like throwing IT in the trash too. (Kidding). But seriously, my old 2010 imac never had this issue. Safari on my iphone and ipad appears normal.
My safari is 6.0.5 and my OS is 10.8.4. I think these are both the latest and greatest.
I disabled all extensions in Safari. Did not help. I saw a post suggesting to cut off Java which I just did, but I am not optimistic this will work either given how persistent and pervasive this problem appears to be.
Any help would be welcome.
DebAlthough you are not launching Safari yourself, make sure it's not launching itself on restart. Any applications that are open when you shutdown/restart will relaunch unless you deselect the tick shown in this image:
Also check System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login items and review what's set to load at boot-up. Remove anything that is not required using the 'minus' button. You can always add things back if necessary.
Another thought - what third-party software have you installed, if any? Any anti-virus programs or apps that promise to 'clean' or 'speed up' your Mac. There are some apps that are known to bring a Mac to its knees - MacKeeper is top of the list.
If none of this helps, then I agree you should take advantage of your warranty/phone support. -
Any ideas for Mail must-force-quit bug after 10.5.2 upgrade?
I've tried many different things suggested on this forum (removing bundles; rebuilding mailboxes; moving Mail folder to desktop for rebuild; eliminating To Dos; creating new Address Book DB). But nothing seems to work. I have to force quit Mail every time. Now it sometimes doesn't check Mail manually either.
What exactly changed in the 5.2 update that could cause so many problems? Mail is becoming intolerable. I'm not a huge fan of Office, but in 5+ years, Entourage never gave me such difficulties. Come on, Apple!
Message was edited by: SPDOK, I found a solution. If possible, use a webmail account to go in and delete your "To Do" folders, if that is what is hanging your Mail application. I did that with one IMAP account, only to have "To Do" items show up under another IMAP account. That account is on my web host, so I converted the account to POP. After that, Mail started working properly again since it was not trying to sync "To Do" items with various IMAP servers.
This problem started after upgrading to 5.2, though I noticed others experienced it with 5.0 and 5.1.

IPhoto 6 freezes up requiring force quit - help!
I loaded all my JPEGs and MPEG4s from my Sony DSCW1 onto 2 DVDS and imported them into iPhoto, creating new albums but keeping the DVDs as the path, ie not copying them to the hard disc. Now iPhoto starts up fine and works for a while but then a message comes up saying 'Cannot find MPEG 065', sometimes it's a different MPEG. It offers a 'cancel' option, but this doesn't work. The spinning wheel then starts and the iPhoto icon in the dock starts bouncing. The only command that then works is Force Quit. I can then restart it and it will work for a while until the same thing repeats. Any ideas?
Macbook 2GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Macbook 2GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8)Art2007:
That't one of the issues with the alias system and video files. You're better off creating a separate library for just the videos so as to not disrupt your primary library. iPhoto doesn't do that with plain image files that are referenced by just alias file.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Since using Maverick OS, I cannot quit mail without "force-quit".
Since I downloaded and started using Maverick OS, I cannot quit Mail without using the "Force-Quit..." command. The "Quit Mail" command under the Menu is greyed out.
Any ideas?
ThanksYou can also force quit apps using Activity Monitor located in HD > Applications > Utilities.
Select the CPU tab.
Select Mail under Process Name.
Select Mail then click the force quit icon (circle with an x) top left side of the Activity Monitor window. -

hello zzxc
Firefox does not open in safe mode and from the menu bar it will not quit ...... I have to go to the dock and right clic to force quit.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall, to try terminal as instructed
It will not open in safe mode
What now ?
DaveTry doing a "clean install" of Firefox:
# Force quit Firefox
# Drag Firefox (in Applications) to Trash, and empty trash
# Download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install. -
Facetime will not open, just hangs & requires force quit.
I am unable to get Facetime to open at all on my Macbook Pro. The icon for Facetime bounces when clicked, but the program never opens, it just hangs. I have confirmed the time setting is correctly configured, the messaging application does in fact work properly, I have logged out and back in from the message app, I have restarted the machine, I have ensured I have all of the latest software updates. Facetime does in fact work both from my Iphone and Ipad, so I know the location isn't the issue. I thought the problem was a glitch in the previous version of OSX and when Yosemite came out my hope was that it would patch whatever the problem is, but alas, that has not been the case. I have even tried paying and downloading Facetime from the App store, but it gives me a message that the installed version is newer and does not allow me to download. Would appreciate any insight into what may be causing this issue and how I may resolve it. BTW, Skype video chat works fine. Thanks.
Back up all data.
Quit FaceTime if it’s running. Force quit if necessary. After each of the following steps, log out or restart the computer, then test FaceTime. If the problem isn't resolved, quit again and go on to the next step.
Step 1
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with FaceTime. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "facetime" or "com.apple.idms" in the name.
Step 2
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (some may not exist):
Containers/com.apple.FaceTime
Containers/com.apple.soagent
IdentityServices
Leave the Library folder open.
Step 3
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with one of the following strings:
com.apple.facetime.bag.plist
com.apple.FaceTime.plist
com.apple.ids
com.apple.imagent
com.apple.imservice.FaceTime
com.apple.imservice.ids.FaceTime
Move them all to the Trash.
Also in the Preferences folder, there is a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing. -
Beachball during playback - requires Force Quitting FCE
Running FCE HD on a 1.8 Ghz single G5, experienced with the product. I'm working on an 8 segment corporate documentary, and am having problems with one segment. At some points (and always the same points) in the segment (total length 7 minutes), I get the spinning beach ball, and the only recourse is to force quit FCE. I've looked at the Activity Monitor, and FCE is busy, using CPU, but I've left it for up to 30 minutes and still beach-balling.
Anybody have any suggestions? I've tried repairing permissions, repairing my disk, upping the memory of FCE to 768 Meg (on a 1 gig machine), trashing my preferences. No luck. The other segments are just fine - I have 4 others done, and they play flawlessly.
Appreciate any suggestions!

1.8 single G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)Martin,
Thanks much for the suggestions. Shutting down and restarting had been tried - many times. I've been mixing down the audio as I go along, so that, too, was not the answer. I tried deleting the wayward clip, exiting, restarting and recreating, but that, too, did not help.
What DID help was changing the opacity on all the clips in the troublesome run of clips. The sequence played through flawlessly. I then moved them back up to 100%, and the problem re-surfaced. Rather than trashing all my render files and cache (a fairly extreme option, as there are 168 audio render files and 965 video render files), though, I decided to leave the opacity at 98%, as no one will be able to tell. At 98%, everything played flawlessly.
This has been a tough one - a big time sink. Is FCP better able to handle these issues, or do they surface there as well?
Cazhog's suggestion to recapture the video would have been my last alternative - a good suggestion as well.
Thanks all for all your help! I can move on now.

Firefox 31.0 worked without any problems with current Mountain Lion OSX, but after loading Mavericks, it frequently locks up. I cannot change tabs or perform any function. If I am able to Quit, I can then not reopen when clicking on the icon. Only solution is to Force Quit. Even then, I sometimes have to restart the computer to get Firefox to open.

How to verify 10.10.3 update that required force quit to finish?
I as well as others have run into the problem of the Yosemite 10.10.3 update getting stuck and requiring reboot. Mine was stuck with no disk noise for over ten hours on "Less than a minute left". Command-L would not open the log so I couldn't verify anything was happening.
I forced a reboot by powering down. At that point the screen started flashing weirdly during the reboot and also seemed to get stuck so I rebooted again in safe mode. At that point the machine booted eventually to the Finder and the version reports 10.10.3.
I have noticed some odd things like very slow window redraws in Safari and I'm worried that the update didn't really update everything it needed to. When you reboot after an update fails to complete does the system verify the update? Is there another way to check if everything got properly updated?
I don't have a recent enough backup to restore 10.10.2 and try again. Even if I did it would of course be at risk of just getting stuck again. Thanks for the link if not the judgmental tone.
I use Time machine. It's decent, but running it continually, which is the only way to come close to guaranteeing the safety of recently edited local files, slows my machine to a crawl. Also, as I pointed out, even if I had a seconds-old backup why would I not then encounter the same problem installing the same update on the same disk? There appears to be nothing physically wrong with the drive.
Apple has billions of dollars in the bank. The onus should be on them to make this process less harrowing for the many users out there who encounter freaky 12 hour+ time dilations of "less than a minute remaining". Time machine indeed.
Yes, everyone should be properly backed up, but many fewer us should ever have to need it than currently do. Minor system updates should not be hair raising, hours long exercises in 2015. (And yes I'm aware Windows can be scary with this sort of thing too.)
