HT3775 How do you play MPG videos on the Mac?

I have a sony vidoe camer which saves videos as MPG files. These are not readable by quicktime, iPhoto or iMovie. How can I convert them to files I can use?

. I have downloaded streamclick, but reluctant to shell out $20 unless it is really going to work. The files are MPG not MPEG and MPG is not listed in the file format supported by Streamclick, does it really work?
I can export to DV MOV and MP4 from streamclick but non of the files is recognised b the Mac. I am running OS 10.7.4.

You can install Perian, or otherwise download and use VLC Player or MPEG Streamclip, all free programs. Installing Perian (which is now open source) and Flip4Mac will enable you to play many other formats of Movies through Quicktime, which I still believe is superior to the other players as it has very powerful editing tools and can do a lot more than just play movies. For just load and play, try VLC player or MPEG Streamclip which again can handle more unusual formats besides the usual ones.

How can you upload a video from the iPod touch to a site other than YouTube? The Moodle upload interface is expecting a file selection dialog box like windows or OSX. I do not want to have to go through an intermediary step of messing with a pc.

It should be around 7 and a half gigs. In iTunes, across the bottom there should be a bar that show how much storage is being used and by what. (music, movies, apps, etc.) To make music take up less room, you can check the box to make it convert the music to 128kbps AAC. This lowers the quality, but with most earbuds and speakers, you can't even tell the difference.
The iPod touch has parental controls built in. You'll find them in Settings. I think they only work for enabling/disabling Safari, Mail, YouTube, and App Store. Here's an app that does more: http://www.mobicip.com/online_safety/ipod_touch

Up until Mavericks, the default setup for multiple displays was "Extended desktop". This picture show how it works far better than any words I could post here:
The blue boxes are Icons for your displays, whose sizes are proportional to the number of pixels. Drag the boxes so that they accurately represent the placement of the displays on your bench (left, right, up, down). Then the mouse moves freely across the boundary between displays, and you can drag a window with it. You can also stretch a window so that it covers most of both screens.
The small white header is an Icon for the MenuBar, which is also moveable.
for Mavericks and later, a different scheme "Displays have separate spaces" becomes the default, but can be annulled by this setting in Mission Control:
"Full Screen" is a concept ported from iOS, the land of tiny screens and one-at-a-time processing for the iPhone. If you have multiple screens, invoking "Full Screen" will make most of the screens stop working entirely, which your main window expands into the MenuBar area. Do not use "Full Screen" on a Mac with multiple screens.

How do you play MPG and WMV files on a MAC?

I am no longer able to play MPG and WMV files on my MAC. I have Flip4MAC, which is I think what I used to use to play them (but not sure). All I know is that I used to be able to before but now they won't play. Do I need some sort of different software or has Microsoft started making these files in a way that won't allow MAC users to play them? If the .mpg/.mpeg files are non-rights-protected you should be able to play them in Quicktime or iTunes. If the wmv files are non-rights-protected you should be able to use Flip4Mac. If the mpg/mpeg or wmv files are rights-protected you'll need the software or subscription that allows you to view copyrighted files.

I used to own a 2nd gen iPod touch, which ran on an ios 4.2.1 system, that allowed me to play YouTube with the screen off. Ever since I got iPod 5 which came with ios 7, let's say I am kinda still getting the hang of how everything works. I still would like to play YouTube while the screen is off, but seem to not know how. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Hi there, you can download itube, it's in the app store, and that allows you to save youtube videos for offline play. Also, you can play youtube audio with the screen off, even without a third party app. Click on a video. When it's playing, press the lock button. Press it again, to wake the device up. You should see your video on the front of the display, with a play button. Click it, and it will start playing even if the device is off. Hope I helped, ~Samuel.

How do you play an album in the correct order?

Just bought an ATV. 160GB model, software version 2.3.
I've synched it to my MacBook's iTunes library, and it plays music fine. However, I can't find a way to simply play an album in the correct sequence. If I navigate to an album and open, the only options are to shuffle the songs (which I don't want to do!), or to play one track at a time. I assumed that if I played the 1st track, it would continue to play the rest of the album (as iTunes does on my Macs and PCs), but it just plays the 1st track and stops.
I've looked through all the settings in the ATV, but can't find anything to change this. I hope I'm being stupid, and have missed something really obvious, but at the moment this is doing my head in! Can anyone help??

You assumed correctly, and it should continue to play the rest of the album in order. Does this happen to all your albums. Have you tried restarting the tv.

Help! How Do I Get My Video to the Mac?

Just purchased our first Mac-27" iMac. I am wanting to do film editing using iMovie and then burn finished product to dvd. I am having trouble figuring out how to get the video from my video camera to the Mac. I have an older Sony video camera (about 3 yrs. old) Do I need a new video camera or is there something out there that will convert my video file so that iMovie will recognize it?

Your camera is a miniDV tape camcorder. You will need to plug the camera into the wall (not on batteries) and use a FireWire cable. If you have an older iMac then a regular 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable will work. However, the recent iMacs use FireWire 800, so you will need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable. These are available online (Google it) or at a Radio Shack type store. The Apple Store may have them as well.
Once you connect it, iMovie should recognize your camera and the import screen will come up.

How do you type a letter using Apple, this is my first Apple and I have only used the Windows Operating System before.

If it has a standard system installation that comes pre-installed with Macs, there should be an application called Pages installed. That is Apple's word processor.
You can launch it from the Dock, if its shortcut is there. The icon looks like an inkwell with a pen. (If you have related follow-up questions, such as setting up a printer, please post back...)
