I usually have to use Quick Time Pro (not free) to convert what I have to a format iMovie will accept.
Or I use VLC video player (free).

Importing an HD 720 movie into an iMovie HD 720 project

Hi everyone,
I'm kinda stuck with a video quality issue.
I downloaded a few HD 720p movie trailers from the Quicktime Movie Trailer website. They look simply great when I look at them with Quicktime Pro.
Because I'm a newbie to iMovie and iDVD, I wanted to make a little test project by making an compilation of a few of these trailers and then exporting them to iDVD to make a DVD.
I do not succeed in creating a DVD that has an acceptable video quality. At first, I believed this to be a problem with the way iDVD encoded my DVD and I did try all possible settings during the last couple of days.
Yesterday, I actually noticed for the first time that I already have this poor video quality in iMovie HD. I checked my playback video quality setting and it's set to Highest. When I drag an HD720 movie into iMovie and I hit the play button, the image quality is gone.
Instead of exporting it directly to iDVD, I also tried to export to a Quicktime movie with the Best Quality setting. The exported quicktime movie is nowhere comparable with the original HD720 movie. I'm not talking about a few minor details but a serious quality deterioration.
Does anyone have any advise here?

ps: I tried using an alternative application for creating a video dvd (Toast). Simply dragged the downloaded HD720 movie trailer in Toast and burned that to a DVD and the result was perfect!

Just an update for all concerned.
It seems I lost my Quicktime mpeg component when I upgraded to QT7. When I reinstalled that I was able to view the HD m2 file in both Quicktime and FCP 4.5. However, only the first seven mintues of an 80 minute movie.
When I import it into MPeg Streamline the entire file shows up and I am able to view it, but when I try to export it as a Quicktime the application quits, without warning.
Does anyone know how I can convert this file and get it into FCP?

How can I get video media .MOD into Premiere El. 9?

Videos from my Canon 7d camera and from my Canon ADCHD camcorder (both SD cards) are .MOD files. I open Premiere Elements 9 and click GET MEDIA and it won't recognize the files. It says it cannot open the videos because:
"your system does not have the required compression/decompression codec installed."
When I bought this software a service rep assured me that it would take .MOD files. Why weren't these codecs installed with the program? How can I get these videos to work with Premiere Elements 9?

First, I apologize - I meant .MOV files, not .MOD files. I did download the Quick Time update. Then other problems arose:
Per an e-mail from a forum member, I downloaded an update of QuickTime, which should let me open .MOV files.
Inserted an SD memory card from my Canon camcorder. I selected FLASH, ADCHD... Then GET MEDIA.
Thumbnails appeared labeled MOV001.MOD and ascending numerical order. Then Premiere stopped working and a message appeared:
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\device\Harddisk1\DR1
So I must have picked the wrong device category?
I couldn't close the error message or the software so used the Task Manager to get out of it.
After a couple more tries I gave up.
Then I tried my DSLR Canon 7d CF memory card. Selected NEW FILE. Clicked on "edit settings" and chose DSLR > GET MEDIA. The downloader began. Up came another message.
Download failed because the files are TOO LARGE.
These are CR2 (RAW) PHOTOS. Do I have to change the format to .jpg or .psd in Photoshop Elements first?
Any suggestions?

How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

When I copy selections from the Mp4 movie using quick time pro 7, they wont "paste" into i movie or even final Cut express.There must be an easy way. Im just starting to use QT pro, so Im not overly familiar with it.

If you only wish to import a small selection from your larger file just paste your "cut" into a new QT Player window (Command-N). Save and name this new file and drag it into your other editor.

First open up Imovie. Then plug the camcorder into the USB port. The computer will search for the camera. It will give a snapshot of what is on there. You can just click on CHECK ALL. It will begin to import. It will also tell you how long it will take. Once it is imported, click DONE. THEN, this is important, drag the snapshots into IMovie on the top to create a new project. You can also click on New Project and name it. When all the pics are in the movie, it will be saved. You can then edit it any way you want. I've done this many times on a Mac. My problem is the internal memory. I have to find out how to get the internal memory videos into my computer. Am currently researching it. BTW, importing from the memory stick is what I did above. I haven't launched iMovie in a while, and I've used iPhoto to import many videos from my iPhone's Camera Roll since the last time I launched and used iMovie.
iMovie prompted me to create/update the thumbnails for my iPhoto videos, along with indicating no iPhoto videos will be available with iMovie until this is completed.
Not sure how to do this manually, but this may be your problem.

If you have not auto imported the photos from the Photo Stream, as Larry suugests, select the photos that you want to import in the Photo Stream, and drag them to the "Events" view in the Source List. They will be imported as new events, auto split with respect to your preferences.

anyway, so i pretty much got the banner done - but i'm stuck
on one problem. I made a motion clip of a heart, and i want the
heart to fall from top to bottom, following a squiggly motion
guide, and to rotate 1/4 turn on the way. I got it as far as
following the motion guide, but when i try to select the instance
in the first frame and rotate it, shouldn't the motion tween make
it appear to slowly rotate, rather than stay put then rotate 1/4
turn at the last frame? When I select the clip and play around with
alpha and stuff, that works fine. What the heck?

Thanks for the link. We still had a the problem, but we found a woork around. It seem that if the power point has any sound in it then it only imports the sound. So we took all the sound out and then it imported fine. Then we put the sound back in and imported that so that then we had the sound effects. Any way it works! Thanks!
