HT3775 Quick Time Player not opening a mpg file

I have inserted a disk (video) that someone made for me.  Quick time player keeps telling me that the movie (mpg) file cannot be opened.  Can anyone tell me what's wrong or what I need to do to?

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might work. If not, you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Do not install both Perian and the DiVX/3iVX codecs at the same time.
If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give the aforementioned VLC Media Player a try.
Regards.

Use VLC . Plays just about any format and it's free.

  • HT3775 Quick Time player does not support AVI movies?

I can't play an AVI movie on quick time player. Why?

If you cant play it in QuickTime, then another media player may be more successful. A couple of good options that generally pick up where QuickTime falls short are VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html) and MPlayer OS X Extended (http://www.mplayerosx.ch).

  • Quick time will not open

I purchased Quick time Pro in July, used it successfully to view and edit .mov files. Now all of a sudden it won't open, the error message reads: Your copy of Quick time 7.02a63 & quick time player 7.0.2a63has expired. Go to apple.com......to download and install a new version.
Tried to install an upgrade from the apple site last night and now Camedia wont open either. Any suggestions?

QuickTime 7 will not install on a PC using the ME OS.
It requires Windows 2000 or XP. If you're really using ME, as suggested in your profile, you'll need to upgrade your OS first.
I don't know what to tell you. I don't think the Public Preview of QuickTime 7 would install on an ME OS so you must be using something different.
The "Camedia" software is used by the Picture Viewer software of QuickTime. Maybe setting the association for jpeg's (or whatever your camera produces) to another application may help you sort this issue out.

If by "click on the logo" yor are referring to the QT Player Finder icon, then it sounds as if the application is functioning correctly.
Does anyone know how to correct the problem?
A movie/audio clip will only auto-load if you double-click on the Finder movie/audio file icon—not the application icon. However, once the application is open, you can open a file (or URL) from within the QT Player app by using the appropriate File menu options.

  • HT3775 I have received an error message that my quick time player cannot open my video as my video seems to be in a mov format, can you help me choose a format to open on my mac

The examples of different format given were
MPEG-2 (OS X Lion or later)
    MPEG-4 (Part 2)
    H.264
    H.263
    H.261
    Apple ProRes
    Apple Pixlet
    Animation
    Cinepak
    Component Video
    DV
    DVC Pro 50
    Graphics
    Motion JPEG
    Photo JPEG
    Sorenson Video 2
    Sorenson Video 3

I am getting an error message when I try to open an attachment to an email entitled movie.avi. It says I may need more software but its not a helpful message because it does not say whta software. Lame and frustrating.

As Neil showed another Lion user on this Forum:
Click http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923, download the software, and apply the QuickTime Pro key to it.
    Hope this helps

  • Can Quick Look but not open a PowerPoint file

Someone sent me a power point file, and I can open it in Quick Look both in Apple Mail and in the Finder. However, Quick Look doesn't allow me to enlarge it big enough to make out the details or to print it. Text Edit won't open it. When I try to double-click the file, the finder displays the message:
The document could not be opened. The file is not in the right format.
I have no idea why Windows users blithely send people files like this in proprietary formats under the assumption that anyone and everyone will have no problem opening them. However, since Quick Look can view this, is there another default program on the Mac that can actually open it?

OK, downloaded and installed NeoOffice, and it did indeed open and play the PowerPoint presentation--which, incidently, seemed to employ every single transition known to Microsoft, made me a bit queasy.
As to why Windows users are so enamored with presentations, danged if I know. And why they have to email the things to everyone they know....well, it's a mystery.
Anyway, you can get NeoOffice here:
    http://www.neooffice.org/
It's open source, and thus has to be free. But if you actually end up using it very often, consider a donation.

  • HT3775 Why can´t I open my MPG files in QuickTime for Lion??

It tells me that it misses some codecs; but it should be an integrated function in QuickTime Player version of the Lion or??
My MPG files has been recordet with my Sony handycam DCR-SR90.

Luckily, there are DOZENS of video/media players and extensions avaliable for the Mac. Many of them are FREE, some of the better FREE ones are...
    PERIAN (quicktime extension)
    http://perian.org/
    QUICKTIME 7.6.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    VLC media player
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
    NICEPLAYER
    https://code.google.com/p/niceplayer/
And if none of those work, there is a possibility that those video files may be corrupted.

I'm trying to watch a video on my MacBook air trought quick time player but the video just won't open.  Every time I try to open it it says: "QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_1916.MOV". To see if additional software is available that will enable quick time player to open the movie, click Tell me more.  I clicked on it but it doesn't show me any helpful information, or at least I don't see it.
    Thank you

  • HT3523 I have done all my updates & my quick time will not play this new project, what is the problem?

My computer is updated but my quick time will not play a mov. file that i exported from final cut on a different Mac , what is the problem?

Final Cut adds some codecs that are not part of normal OS X.  If your movie uses one of these codecs it won't play on a system that does not have Final Cut.
    Adding these codecs may help:

If not, ask in one of the Final Cut forums:

  • HT3775 Why the the Quick Time Player is not opening?

I have been trying to watch a video for class, I'm unable to do that due to the quick time player. I've download it several time already. why is that?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • HT3775 why can i not open the file format MPEG_4(mp4) on my mac with Quick player?

i can not open the email with file format MPEG_4(mp4) which is one of the contents on the file format listing , supporting by Quick time player but still can not be opened . !!!!!!!!! by the way my quick time player version:10.2(603.6)

The file extension, .mp4, .wmv, .mov, etc. really has no bearing on whether it can play or not. It should, but that is not the way it works. The file type is merely a wrapper around the media content. That media content can be encoded with lots of different encoding algorithms. If it is encoded with a scheme that Quicktime doesn't understand, then it won't play in Quicktime Player.
You might try installing the Perian plugin for Quicktime. It might have the codecs necessary to decode the media content.
Another option is to use Video LAN's VLC. It plays a lot of things.
