For years Quicktime played any AVI file I asked it to run. Now, with Mt. Lion Apple throws me into cyberspace tellign me I have to find a codec to see an AVI movie. Give me a break Apple. I don't have time for this.

Because of this problem, I've had to even add special code letters before people's names to increase the chances of Siri getting it right, which is only about 70% of the time.

That is not a feature of Siri. Submit your feedback requesting such a feature directly to Apple using the appropriate link on the Feedback page:

Note that yelling at the phone does not improve the chances that Siri will understand you.

You asked the question in the title area instead of the area where the body of your posting is intended to be. No fault of yours - they need to make the form clearer.
Check the system requirements for the various versions of Photoshop Elements and see which suits your system. Adobe only sells the most recent versions of their software, so if you need an older version you will need to find a vendor for it.

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.
If, on the otherhand, you've been cleaning up your media from Explorer rather than iTunes and just want to eliminate the now broken links, use Tunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on startup.

Why Can't QuickTime Do This Anymore?

About a year ago, I used to be able to create muxed MPEG-2 TS (transport streams) using Compressor and open them using QuickTime. Of course I have the MPEG-2 plugin for QuickTime too. However, it seems QuickTime can no longer open MPEG-2 TS files. I can still create them using Compressor, but only MPEG Streamclip can open them, QuickTime cannot. I can't believe this shareware program can do something Apple can't. It MUST be a legal issue involving QuickTime. Does anyone know for sure? I have spent a lot of time looking for the answer to this. Why can't QuickTime play TS files?????

MPEG Streamclip is a better all around solution so instead of figuring out why Apple did something move on to a superior multipurpose and conveniently, free, application as you have found.

I was using Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 with mac pro
exported a project 720p25 with "export>using Quicktime conversions",
and now i am getting a white screen with sound fine.
The info viewed in quicktime movie info:
Format :
16-bit Integer (little endian), Stereo (LR), 48000kHz
HDV 720p25, 1280 x 720(1248x702), Millions
so i was wondering which codec i need exactly. Anyone?

Actually i am using the fcp with mac pro at my school's apple training centre
and they told me if i export it WIth using quicktime conversions
i can watch it with quicktime, and just quicktime, nothing more
i believe that's what he meant.
and the mac pro did work fine playing the mov with quicktime only, not also opening the fcp.
I mean, it happens a lot, right?
some videos just don't work on your mac but his is fine,
that's the computers' problem not the video, at least i think..
and i've been looking for other topics in the forum,
and most of them said look for codecs or even third party codecs,
turned out most of them mark the question solved.
that's why i thought the quicktime message was right,
some codecs are missing. it's just that i ended up failing finding the codec i need

Have you done the obvious things to try to fix it: quit Quicktime then start it back up again, log out then back in, reboot.
Edit: Just read one of your later posts. If VLC won't play it, this is unrelated to Quicktime and Flip4Mac. Are you sure these wmv files are okay?

Why can't Quicktime Pro demux MPEG1 files?

After buying QuickTime Pro I discovered that I couldn't convert muxed MPEG1 files without losing the audio. I understand that QTP simply doesn't have that capability and now use MPEG Streamclip to demux the audio then I can import the video and demuxed audio file into iMovie and export it from there.
But why can't QTP demux it itself, to begin with? I don't see how a simple freeware app can do it but QTP, which isn't free, can't. I probably wouldn't have bought QTP if they spelled out clearly on the pages about Quicktime that it couldn't do this, just like how they point out the extra MPEG2 plugin you may need.
I don't regret purchasing QTP; I'm just disappointed that I didn't get everything I thought I was paying for, and that I have to take extra steps to convert old video clips.

Mike, it can't edit or convert Real, WMV and a lot of AVI's using some codecs as well. I think it would be a fair question if they ever represented that it could which they don't - in fact they say it will not export audio with muxed MEPG 1 , and 2 files.
It edits "editable" video while MPEG is a delivery format that is not that great to edit even if it is decent enough quality (since there are not actual frames each 1/30th of a second to edit for starters).
MPEG Streamclip is best looked at as not better than QT Pro but an adjunct to help do some file conversions (and with the latest version a LOT of file conversions) to a QT format that you could then use in QT pro to edit, add tracks to and so on. Or to DV for Life/FCE for editing more complex jobs.
This complaint or observation is often heard for iMovie and Final Cut as well and Apple says the same thing, don't use MPEG as source video for these editors - they are not MPEG editors and were not sold as such.

You can only use QuickTime Player 7 to play that 12 year old format.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks. I just found it strange that it was one of many files that I ripped from a DVD ( part of a box set of a TV series, and all the others were fine so far. Funny that this one in particular was causing a problem.

Can Premiere tell me which codec my file uses?

I've been testing PPro CS6 for a few days, and love a lot of what I see. PPro plays anything I throw at it, and it has a gazillion metadata fields, which has great potential (even if some of that potential is to confuse you when you've forgot which of the hundreds of fields you used). However:
For most files, including RED footage and Quicktime, there is no codec information. "Compression" and "Format" fields are all blank. Even the Info tab just says "type: Movie". This happens with MOV's in H.264 and ProRes, R3D, and more.
I know that Premiere wants me not to care about what kind of video I'm working with, but I do care. Also, it helps when preparing edits to go to other applications and systems.
Is it just a problem with my system? Is it something I'm missing?

It tells me that it misses some codecs; but it should be an integrated function in QuickTime Player version of the Lion or??
My MPG files has been recordet with my Sony handycam DCR-SR90.

Luckily, there are DOZENS of video/media players and extensions avaliable for the Mac. Many of them are FREE, some of the better FREE ones are...
