HT3787 iDisk.sparsebundle Unable to access Backup or Resolve Alias

Upgrading to the latest OS. I find a folder for "Previous local iDisk" on my desktop.  Once the iDisk.sparsebundle is mounted, a drive for my iDisk appears under available devices.  Opening the mounted drive displays a single alias folder entitled "Backup." Clicking the folder produces a "Connecting to Server" alert window displaying, "Resolving alias to Backup...".  Shortly thereafter it timesout and displays, "There was a problem connecting to the server "idisk.mac.com".  Contact your system administrator for more information."

You should be able to use the Time Machine interface during installation, when asked for a source for the user account, or more usually from System Preferences or the menu bar icon.  Sometimes, if the computer name has been changed, the backup sets need to be linked.  A good description is in James Pond's very well known guide on all things Time Machine:
http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
I would avoid any third party applications, but you can drill down from within Finder, to recover files, if necessary.

  • Error when making an image backup to external harddrive: Files on Z-drive unable to access.

Hello, this is the 3rd time I have this problem. Every time after a major Windows (mine is Vista) update R&R does no longer work.
When I start to create a full image back-up I get some 2 times 5 error messages saying something like: Unable to access or copy to/from
5 times the message z:\tvtos\winpe.wim      error 1393 = disk structure problem er something
5 times the message z:\Preload\drivers\E1e5032.SYS  Error 5 no access
I may or may not get a message: " Fcopier MFC application is not functioning" (during the copy to/from z: ),
then after 30 minutes the backup gets cancelled automatically.
I assume the Z disk is a virtual memory disk.
I had stopped my virusprotection, firewall software.
I have run this as Administartor
The problem is the same when I run the R&R as Administrator ( I am).
Then after tens of minutes the backup operation gets automatically cancelled.
I have not been able to find a fix for this problem, but before it was fixed by a Lenovo R&R update.
    Thanks,

    Hi there
I had the same problem and I found this answer to a similar question to ours, so I copied and pasted it for you
Reset the device by holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time for approximately 10 seconds.  After it resets the message will be gone and you can go to settings > icloud and put in your password.
That seems to be a bug with the password alert where it won't respond correctly sometimes.
    Hope this helps

  • Under Snow Leopard I used a WD My World NAS to back up my Mac Pro (Mid 2010). When I upgraded to Lion I am unable to access the backup because the NAS does not yet support AFP. I have now bought a Time Capsule and want to transfer the old backup onto it.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • Unable to access time machine backup. The folder "Documents" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

My MacBook Pro with 750GB storage refuses to startup due to a problem with logic board (unfortunately I'm in Singapore and there is no Apple store here and zero customer support).  I'm trying to access some of the files from the time machine back-up using my MacBook Air with 120GB storage, but I'm unable to open the backup.  I receive an error message "you don't have permission to see its contents". Unable to access time machine backup. The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
I don't really want to migrate the data from the time machine to the MacBook Air as I simply don't have sufficient storage space on the MacBook Air.  The iPhoto library which I'm trying to access is 200GB, which is more than the size of the MacBookAir.
Is there any way I can view the photos and documents stored on the time machine backup.
    Thank you very much.

When you setup the Mac, you created a Admin user account with say name X
You ran Migration Assistant and it migrated user Y from the Windows machine.
User Y has different permissions than User X.
User X can't normally access User Y's account.
So what you do is log out of User X via the Apple menu and into User Y, this way you have permission to access the files.
If you want to transfer files from User Y to User X account
Transfer files between user accounts on the same machine instructions
Finder > Go menu > Computer
A window appears with your boot drive, double click on it to open
Inside is Users folder, double click to open it
Inside is your User accounts, double click on the one you want to send files too
Double click on the Public folder drop the files into the DropBox folder,
The permissions will change and can be used in the other user account when you log into it and moved to the appropriate folders.
Applications are typically installed and kept in the Applications folder which is a global access folder all users can access to run them from, but not all users can modify unless they are a Admin user.
Windows programs won't run on a Mac, but they can be instaled into a virtual machine program that is running Windows.

  • Unable to access my iDisk

Since sometime in mid June, I have been unable to access my iDisk. I believe it started shortly after applying 10.4.10. I had a local copy that kept saying "Sync Failed". It turn off my local iDisk and tried to re-establish it - no lock. I have removed files, rebooted, cleared keychain and many other suggestions from other posts. 3 days ago I updated my iBook to 10.4.10 and it started having the same problem. I took it to the Genius bar tonight and of course it started working!
But I had a nice conversation with the Genius who gave me a few suggestions to try for my G5. Well they don't work.
I cannot even get my iDisk to map without making a local copy!

  • I am unable to access prior Time Machine backups.

I am unable to access prior Time Machine backups. I can see previous backups when I enter TM but they do not respond when I click on them. My TM is backing backups and at one time I was able to access them. I am logged on to my Mac Pro as the admin. I am running 10.9.5 and the TM disk is an internal 2 TB drive with 12 GB free.

The 12 GB free may be the cause.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • I have an external hard drive from my time capsule that stopped working on me. I am attempting to access the data with a hard drive reader on my MAC. I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data.

I have an external hard drive from my time capsule that stopped working on me. I am attempting to access the data with a hard drive reader on my MAC. I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data and it does not show on the desktop when connected.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • New MBP won't let me access backups from MyPassport drive

I have a WD MyPassport external drive with an extensive amount of backup data on it. I recently bought a new MBP and while I can access general files on my disk I am not allowed to access my backups. There is a red icon that says I do not have permission, even though when I look at the drive info it says I have read/write permission. Can someone please advise how I might be able to regain access to my backups?
    Thank you!

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the "sparsebundle" file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.
