    Hello WGT52,
It sounds like this error message is preventing you from syncing your content to the iPod. I would recommend the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

The solution i found to this problem is have windows hard drive recovery tool scan and repair the hard drive on you ipod. To do this, you need to configure itunes so it does not open when you plug in you ipod. Next, plug in your ipod, for windows 7 user a pop up should come up asking to scan and fix device. click yes and give it some time. after the tool in complete unplug you ipod, open itunes, plug your ipod in. if you still get the message, click restore, and start this process on more time. If you do not have windows seven or this pop-up does not appear manually go to you hard recover tool and have it scan your ipod. then follow the rest of the process.

Hi could anyone help me out? my iphone 3gs keeps restarting itself every two minutes which i think is some kind of software issue, now there are a number of things i have done starting with putting in a new battery.when i charge the phone it resets itself every two minutes or so and the battery indicator stays at 4% so i decided to restore the phone on itunes (which is the latest edition) and when i connect my phone which i have put into recovery mode using the buttons, i get an error message saying :- the iphone software update server could not be contacted.a duplicate file name was specified. i have tried re-installing i tunes and that doesn't solve the issue and i have trawled through the program files to see if i could spot the duplicate but without success ,has anyone had the same issue and resolved it?

There are several ways an add-on can cause iTunes to act erratically, such as those listed below:
You see this alert while syncing: "... cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."

  • Please help!! Ipod classic error message: "...cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified

So I bought a "new to me" Ipod classic (gen 7, 160 gb) I have a gen 6-160gb already but I wanted the gen 7. I bought this one used from GameStop(i did purchase the warranty so if there is no solution I may have to put it to use). It was not restored to factory settings or anything when I purchased it. So to start out I restored to factory settings. It had originally been used for a Mac, and I operate with Windows so it wouldn't do anything unless I restored it and started over fresh. I tried to sync it but it gave me an error message (i cannot recall what it said- but i believe it was the same as i am getting now). It only synced about half my songs (I have over 3000 on Itunes and it only did about 1400). I tried to restore factory settings again and after it finished it showed all my songs on the ipod, but the error message still popped up. My songs play on my ipod just fine it shows all my songs and all my playlists. everything seems to be working fine but the message still returns. I plug in my Ipod to sync and instead of showing the screen where it tells you about firmware and updates etc that I always got with my other ipod it, the 'welcome to your new ipod' screen like it did after I restored it.
Can anyone help me fix this problem???? or am I royally screwed and need to throw in the towel?
Just to specify so there's no confusion:
Ipod in question- Classic Gen7 160gb
Ipod software version- 2.0.4 (as of 3/2/15)
    Itunes version- 12.0.1.26
    OS- Windows 7 64bit
if there is any other information needed please let me know (and an idea of how to find it.)
Im afraid to sync my Gen6 or other ipods (2 gen4 shuffles that are for my kids) for fear of something similar happening to them.

This error can also come from WireTap Pro or possibly Snapz Pro ! Look in your personal library itunes plug ins folder for anything called iToner - I found it in there and promptly removed it and now its working again... I never bought iToner but apparently Ambrosia software puts a supplement file in there so look around for it if you have any Ambrosia software products on your system you maybe need to hunt this little monster down.....
Needless to say I will never trust itunes plug in again from anyone.....

  • "iPod cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified"

    I get this error:
And then end up with this screen:
I have my iPod manually managed, none of my music is actually organized into an iTunes folder or anything, my iPod is NOT automatically synced with iTunes. I do automatically sync photos to my iPod though.
So what does this error mean? And how do I get rid of it? I tried changing USB ports, I tried the "scan and fix" device method, I restarted the computer. I'm using iTunes 10.2.2.12.
I'm very afraid of just unticking the"automatically sync" and then clicking "Done" because I have a feeling it's going to erase my iPod's contents. I do not want to go through putting 100GB of music back into the iPod. I do not want to restore the iPod because firstly I've read cases where this did not do anything and secondly I just want to do it because I see it as a quick fix and just avoiding the problem. Restoring/reformatting the iPod will be the very, very last resort.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi.
I was just afraid that my iPod would have been wiped clean or restored (after unticking the option in that second picture and then clicking "Done"). I manually manage my iPod - all my files are spread across various harddrives and locations, I don't like the idea of automatically syncing from one location.
I ended up just going through with it (unticking, and then clicking Done) and the 'problem' was fixed; nothing was deleted off of my iPod and I never saw the error again. I didn't downgrade to a previous version or anythng like that. So you should be fine.

  • "The ipod cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified"

I keep getting this error message on Itunes 11.0.1.12 on my Ipod Touch 4th Generation. Has anybody had this and can help me?

  • The iPod "SEVERUS" cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified. What do I do?

When I try to sync, I get that message. I've done so many things. I've reset my iPod, changed the disk letter, cleaned out my temp folders, etc. What am I supposed to do? At first half of my songs would still sync but now only 1.

In some cases that error message can be triggered by a corrupt iPod Photo Cache folder. Deleting that folder, which is created inside the photos folder that is synced to the device should resolve. If that doesn't fix it then there is perhaps a different cache in the appdata folder that needs clearing.
