HT3814 Problem adding certain CDs to iTunes

I have been importing our CD collection to iTunes on our PC with mixed results. Most times I will insert a CD into the drive, iTunes recognizes it, and imports it. Certain other CDs seem to be recognized but then stall out, usually during the first song. Other CDs are not recognized at all. Would this be a problem within iTunes, with our CD drive, or the CD itself?

DeeDee,
iTunes has only one import preference that affects CD ripping, so the first thing to do is to follow this classic advice from Apple: "If the "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs" checkbox is not selected, select it. If it's already selected, deselect it."
The next thing to try is to rip one of the problem CDs in another program on the same computer, such as Windows Media Player.  If it works, just add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library.
Finally, be aware that some CDs, especially from the Warner Brothers Group, are "defective by design," i.e., are designed not to rip accurately.

First-off, this seems to be a general problem with 10.4 (across all the operating systems of which I am aware).  Unfortunately, I cannot provide a permanent solution but, if you need a quick fix, this will (hopefully) work for you.
For some inexplicable reason, iTunes no longer recognises standard Windows paths.  For example:
    Y:\Music\Buddy Holly\Buddy Holly - Rave On.mp3
The end result is that it will import a playlist with no content.
It will, however, recognise the equivalent Apple paths which look like this:
    file://localhost/Y:/Buddy Holly/Buddy Holly - Rave On.mp3
It is possible to convert your existing playlists using a few basic replace commands in something like Notepad.  In my case, I made some code changes in my music manager and now generate two sets of playslists (one standard and one to accommodate iTunes).
Forgive me foir stating the obvious but please remember to make sure that the disk / path containing your music is accessible when doing the import otherwise you will probably get a blank result.  Note that you can do a bulk import by selecting all the (revised) playlists and dragging them onto the iTunes sidebar.
I am sorry that this is not a "clean" solution but it will work if you are in a bind.  The only alternative of which I am aware is to wait for Apple to fix the problem.

  • Trouble with adding certain songs to iTunes and displaying podcasts on iPod

i just ripped a cd into mp3s onto my computer and i tagged the tracks and everthing but i can't add the tracks to my iTunes for some reason. i tried dragging it into the window and selecting "add file to library" but it doesnt work. i was planning on ripping the cd and trying again, but i was wondering why i cant add those tracks.
also, i recently subscribed to a podcast, which i havent done before. after i had updated my iPod with the podcasts, i went into video > video podcasts but it didnt show anything. my recently added list shows the videos but it doesnt show up in my podcasts or any of my other video areas. isn't it supposed to show up there?

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't don't show under artist on my iPod.

  • Problems importing certain CDs

I have a certain reoccurring problem with a few CDs when I try to import them into iTunes.
For 3 CDs when I try to import the desired CD the last track is too short. That is to say, that the song IS 5 minutes, but the computer only recognizes it as 3 minutes long in one case and 3 seconds in another case. That means that after the song is imported it is cut drastically short.
This problem doesn't seem to be isolated to just iTunes. Just merely trying Windows media player recognizes the song at the same, much shorter, length.
Regular CD players all play the last track in its entirety as do other computers in the house.
The main thing that seems to connect these certain CDs is they are "enhanced" When inserting them into this computer they are not recognized as enhanced. No special player pops up, nor do menus or video selections.
So is there a way to import these last tracks onto iTunes at their "real" length? Is it just that these three certain CDs are defective or is it because they are enhanced?
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Not familiar with "enhanced" CD's.
A suggestion - It seems you ought to be able to use a sound application such as Amadeus to copy the song from the CD, reformat it to another format such as AIFF, MP3 etc., then simply drag/drop the newly created file onto the iTunes window.

Just realized you're using Windows XP. I'd search Google for a sound editor similar to the one I suggested. File copy etc. would be the same.

  • Adding Ripped CDs via iTunes 10.5 on iPhone 4 iOS5 not working

Why can I no longer add my music from my ripped CD's to my iPhone's iPod player since upgrading to iTunes 10.5 and iOS5??  Is this a bug or is Apple now not going to allow people to add ripped music from CDs or downloads from the internet outside of iTunes unless you subscribe to their iCloud & Match service and their CD music into iTunes ver??
Anyone have any insight on this??
1st to clarify, I have never synced automatically my music to my iPhone.  I always manually manage my music & thus the "manually manage music & videos" section on iTunes is always enabled.
Adding purchased iTunes music works fine, but when I add anything I've ripped from the 1,200 CD's I own or songs I've gotten from Amazon.com or other places, they show up in iTunes under the music section of my device and even on my device, but they're all greyed out and unplayable, with a little "sync" symbol to the left of the song info.  See pic below:

    Hello Chalky senior,
If you're experiencing the same issue on multiple devices, the next step would be reporting the issue to the folks in the iTunes Store, as detailed in the article below.

  • Importing certain CDs to itunes, and they come with a skip.

    Hello,
I just jumped onto the Apple thing, and decided I should import all my (paid for, original) CDs to to itunes, on my macbook pro, so i can listen to them on my iphone, and in my car.  All my CDs seem to import with the highest quality besides my Warner Bros produced albums. (at least that the only connection I can find. Namely, Van Halen and Black Sabbath.  It seems that Van Halen, all 5 albums I own import with a skipping or ticking noise in the background.  Sometimes the song even has a little jump or skip.  Black Sabbath is not as bad, their albums come with more of a background distortion type noise.  Mind you, these CDs all play perfectly well in my stereo and through my car.  I have read some forums on here, and cannot find a resoluton to my issue.  I have used different techniques, apple lossless encder, AAC encoder, changed bitrates, used the error cerrecting, disabled the error correction, no solution.  Some adjustments acutaually make it worse! I see other people have this issue as well, please help!
Side note, I have a PC I busted out, and downloaded the albums to that itunes to see if it made any difference, and it did not.  Thanks!

Have you had a look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help: Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together

  • Problems adding songs to my iTunes

When I try to add a particular album to my iTunes, it only adds four songs out of the entire album and just seems to ignore the rest of the songs. No error message, nothing... it just refuses to add the songs. I've tried it several times, but no dice. Can anybody help with this?

Im sure someone will know better than me how to fix this but you could try opening windows exploror and going to the folder the songs are located in, rightclick the song, select "Open With" and pick iTunes. That might force iTunes to open and add the song then
I Know iTUnes has issues with MP#s and corrupt ID3 tags attacted to them. you can search the net for a program called "TidyMP3" to fix corrupt tags if you have them

  • Distorted Warner CDs in itunes - a solution

I've had problems importing some CDs into itunes. They seem to import but are seriously distorted on playback. They are also all made by Warner. I looked here and on the internet in general and it seems to be a common problem and none of the suggested solutions seemed to work. Maybe everybody knows a solution but, just in case, and in the spirit of general helpfulness here is a solution that worked for me. I just used an external CD/DVD player connected via USB. The CDs then imported fine with no distortion. This is in Windows 7.
I don't know yet if it will work for all my Warner CDs or if it will work for anyone else - best of luck.

Sounds like it's system-wide on your PC, then.
Or a problem with the actual 20 CDs, which seems unlikely.
If it was my PC, I'd either
    1) reinstall the CD drivers or
    2) try ripping on a different PC

  • Why does iTunes not allow me to import certain CDs?

I import CDs that I own every so often, and sometimes I get a message that I "don't have access to your iTunes media folder or a folder within it. To change permissions, select your iTunes Media Folder in the Finder, and choose File > Get Info". But, no matter what I do, I can't import those CDs into my iTunes library. It only happens with certain CDs - as well as some songs that I have stored on a backup drive from my PC days - and I have no idea why. What can I do? I'd love to be able to import a bunch of older (80s and 90s) CDs...that I bought!
    Message was edited by: islandsmurf

Not all permissions are altered as stated above. If you are still having problems (probably with just the odd CD which was on your list before) you need to look in your iTunes Music folder (homeuser/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) within the iTunes folder. There you need to look for a copy of the CD or mp3 file you are trying to upload. If it is already there, highlight it and 'get info' where you will see that despite unlocking the permissions, the file permission for 'staff' (or some other user which you may have defined) is greyed out and locked to 'No Access'. If this is the case, simply delete the whole folder for that CD then try uploading again.
Worked for me after trying many times to change folder permissions on each and every file without success.

  • ITunes Encountering Problems When Importing CDs

Since I allowed an iTunes update about a month ago (?), I've been having problems importing certain (apparently random) CDs. I import a lot of books on CD, and many times "iTunes encounters a problem and has to shut down." Not always. For example, the book I'm trying to import this afternoon worked fine on the first disc, but not at all on the second. I got the shutdown message after only a few seconds. I always join the tracks before importing.
Earlier today, I was having trouble with a number of discs, but it would occur when the import was much further along. I thought I'd figured out a workaround -- instead of joining all the tracks on the CD, I joined them into two sets, each half the size of the full CD. Then imported them one at a time. Worked like a charm for about 5 discs. Then I started importing a new book, thought I'd get brave and try to import a whole CD. Worked like a charm on CD #1. Then I got to #2, and not only did it only work for a few seconds before shutting down iTunes when they were all joined together, when I tried my workaround, that didn't work either.
I'm running iTunes 6.0.1.3, with CD Driver 2.0.4.3 and CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.2.

Windows Explorer will display tag properties for mp3 & wma files, not aac (m4a) or wav. It is possible for mp3 files to contain multiple tags but only one will be displayed. Try inspecting the problem fils with a third party tag editor to see if you can tell what is going on. For mp3 files, provided all the details that you want the file to have are displayed in iTunes, you can try using the right-click option Convert ID3 Tag > None a few times followed by Convert ID3 Tag > ID3v2.3 which may well help.

  • Certain CDs will not play on itunes

For some reason, certain Cds, even brand new ones that work fine on a cd player, have incredibly poor playback on my itunes and when i sync them to my ipod. playback on these Cds is very grainy and scratchy, but strangely the majority of Cds are fine. I haven't found anyone with the same problem but i have tried to fix it by changing quicktime audio settings to 192 khz rate and 24 bit size, which hasn't helped. Is there any simple way to solve this issue? All help appreciated.

ive tried with windows media player on high quality, mp3 format, wma format etc and nothing seems to work; it won't even play the CD normally.
Then the problem seems to be bigger than iTunes, and since you noted before that "the majority of Cds are fine" I am wondering if there is something about the CDs that is causing a problem for any program that tries to rip them.
Not sure if you have time for one more experiment, but if you have access to a friend's computer, see if they rip there.

  • Problems with importing CDs - is it an iTunes problem or a computer problem

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac in August, and have had problems importing audio CDs into my iTunes library. Sometimes the computer completely skips over certain songs when importing or the songs are imported but have parts skipped over, almost like the cd is skipping while it is importing. This is happening quite frequently, and it is happening with cds that I know aren't scratched, etc, so there is no reason that I can think of that these wouldn't be importing just fine. I'm wondering if this is an iTunes issue or a computer issue. I don't want to bring my computer in to get serviced if this is just merely an iTunes problem.
Thanks so much for your help!

    No, just the touch events.
I think it's because I have an Apple multitouch pad but it functions as a mouse so it's actually sending two notices. It doesn't do it on a touch screen device nor does it do it when everything is switched to mouse events, so I think it's just unique to Device Central and this particular type of mouse.
