HT3825 Sony Nex 5 Raw, 10.6.8 and iPhoto 09
I am very frustrated. According to this post, I should be able to use the Digital Camera Raw3.9 updater on 10.6.8. I have iPhoto 09. It tells me I need 'iPhoto 9'. iPhoto 11 (v 9) will not run on 10.6.8, but only on 10.7. This doesn't make sense.
OK, now I understand that the initial version of iPhoto 11 runs on 10.6.8, but not the one currently available in the store. Now I need to know how to get my hands on the older version.

Editing and saving RAW in Photoshop CS3 and iPhoto
So I have a specific question. I right click an Image, select "edit in external editor" then edit RAW image using CS3, so far so good. But then I save it "in existing folder", so I have a .jpg of my edited image. NOW what I want to do is have that file imported into iphoto so I can view the thumbnail and organize, but I don't want to have to do that to 500 images in different folders. Is there any way to "refresh" iphoto and import files in those folder already in my itunes library? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ian
No, in a word.
You need to save the processed RAW to the desktop and then import it to iPhoto. It will be treated as a new image.
OF course you can move it around in the iPhoto Window if you wish to the preferred location.

Support for Canon raw files in panther and iPhoto
I can't get iPhoto 6 to import the raw files (.cr2) from my Canon 400D.
I can use image capture and also Elements 4 with Raw support, so I am not sure if its the operating system level (panther) or something else.
I did use iPhoto with my previous Canon with .CRW files and that worked fine to import them, organise them and then edit etc externally in Photoshop.
Is there any way out there to do this without upgrading the OS or iPhoto, I appreciate I have a way to continue working but miss the convenience of the easy import.Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.

Support for RAW (ARW) from Sony NEX-7
I have iPhoto 9.2.3 (629.52) on my macBook Air running OS X 10.6.8. I successfully imported Raw photos from my Sony NEX-7 (ARW).
I have iPhoto 9.2.3 (629.52) on my iMac running OS X 10.6.8. When I try to import these same Sony Raw files, I get the message that the format is not supported (or whatever that message is).
I downloaded the RAW camera update 3.9 and installed it on my iMac. Still no go.
What gives? Any ideas? Suggestions?Ah, wouldn't you know it. Found the answer right after I posted my question (I looked before . . . I swear I did).
I needed and have downloaded the RAW Camera Update 3.13 (I think the specific update I needed was in the RAW Camera update 3.10).
Thanks . . . um . . . to me

Sony NEX-6 RAW image lenscorrection
Hi,
I have a Sony NEX-6 and made some nice photo's. But when I open the photo in Lightroom 5 and go to develop the picture something strange happends to the picture. The same as discribed on this page:
Hasan Karagülmez - Blog: Upright and Lens Corrections with Sony NEX 16-50mm in Lightroom and PhotoShop
I know how I can turn on the lenscorrection at the picture.
But...I would like to apply this on alle the pictures I import form the Sony. I do have make a user preset but this doesn't seems to work. Maybe I have checked the wrong boxes.
Can you help me? Thanks in advance.
VincentI have selected import, with SD card directly plug into the SD card reader on my iMac.
aperture was able to see the raw files, it does allow me to import.
but after imported, i click on the imported file, it shows "unsupoorted image format"
Have you tried to reprocess the raw after importing? Select the new import and use the command

How do I get iPhoto to recognize my Sony nex 5R
When I connect my Sony Nex 5R to my macbook, and launch iPhoto, iPhoto doesn't recognize camera automatically. What am I doing wrong?
Are you shooting RAW?
I do not see your camera on the list of supported cameras - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US - if it is not supported then shoot JPEG until support is released or use the Sony supplied software to download and convert the images and import the converted images until Apple releases support

I've got a problem with raw files support for my Nikon D700 camera. Even though this camera is listed here: https://www.apple.com/pl/aperture/specs/raw.html both Aperture and iPhoto see .nef files as a white image. If I try to edit one, both apps crash.
How can I get a raw files support in these applications?
I have updated os, apps and even tried to remove and reinstall raw camera bundle as it was described here RAW files suddenly show up as "not supported" (Aperture 3.5.1, OS X 10.10). No luck.
My OSX is installed on SSD, while iPhoto library is on the secondary HDD drive.Norbert, I cannot find the post you are referring to.
Have you had the problem with Aperture 3.6? This is surprising, since the Aperture 3.6 released is supposed to fix this bug, see the release Notes: Aperture 3.6 Release notes
Aperture 3.6 Update
Adds compatibility with OS X Yosemite.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture performance to slow down while browsing through images with onscreen proofing enabled.
Fixes an issue where Aperture could become unresponsive in rare cases when adding to a shared photo stream.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture to unexpectedly quit when using the Write IPTC Metadata to Originals feature.
Aperture no longer displays the alert, “This library has been opened with a newer version of Aperture.” when using Library First Aid with libraries previously opened in iPhoto.
Do you remember, which of the presets in Library/Application Support actually is causing the problem, since deleting all of them is causing a lot of work to restore the custom settings? It would be great to know the specific file. -
I can't open Sony NEX-5 raw files with PS-CS6 and latest raw converter plug-in 7.1.
When I try to open raw files from Sony NEX-5 instead of going to PhotoShop like all my NEF files, they go to another software suite that I have (On-One). I am running MAC OS 10.7.5 with latest PS-CS6 and latest raw converter plug-in 7.1. On-One seems to hi-jack these Sony raw files and won't give me the opportunity for the adjustments that I get with the Adobe Raw File converter. Any help??
Great news!
Since you have the solution, you might want to see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1058744?tstart=0

You need to upgrade your Photoshop Elements to version 11 or later or you can use the free Adobe DNG converter.
The DNG converter is a standalone program which will take a folder containing your ARW files and converts them to DNG raw files. The DNG files can then be read by Photoshop Elements 9.03.

Use Camera RAW with Sony Nex-3
Hey Guys!
I want to get out more details from my photos.
Im using Adobe Photoshop CS5
Sony NEX-3 Compact Camera (listed in the camera raw compatibility list)
First i changed the cameras picture format from jpg to RAW & made some photos.
At home i tried to open the files with Camera Raw. Doesnt work. The sony camera saved the pictures as an ARW File.
So i downloaded Adobe DNG Converter. I converted the ARW into a RAW file and opened it with camera raw.
So far so good! I opended the RAW picture with Photoshop. Just for testing with 8 & also 16 bit. Does my camera support 16bit?
I compared the RAW File with the new created jpg.
Normaly the quality of the raw file should be much better than the compressed jpg i think.
I took a look at some other jpg pictures (i shot them in JPG Mode) & compared them with the RAW Images (RAW Mode).
I saw absolutely no difference between RAW & JPG.
I also tried a exact tonal value correction at both images.
Same with other picture corrections. Details, Noise, Sharpness.... same.
With the Sony NEX-3 there also was a RAW Program included which opens the ARW Files.
I cant see some differences between RAW & jpg here too.
What I am doing wrong?
I have to say that i am an camera raw beginner. I tried this for the first time. I thought this would be easier!
At the screenshot below you see a JPG picture on the left & a 16bit DNG on the right.
I found no differences!
I would be very happy about your help and some good advices.
Best regards AndiAndi265 wrote:
Basicly i understand how RAW works. But im still wondering why i cant see just only a very little difference to my jpg Images.
The image of the Mountain Railway Station i postet has a lot of dark shadow areas & details.
I´m also wondering why these chromatic aberrations are shown in the RAW file? I thought its only in the jpg images because of the compression.
Your raw file may be 12 or 14 bit, and have no output colour space - it is only limited by its physical characteristics and analogue-to-digital converters. You should set Camera Raw for the biggest workspace necessary, which in my case is 16 bit AdobeRGB. Others work in ProPhotoRGB—it's a personal choice. This has the effect of constraining the raw data, and you will learn to use the sliders to work within those constraints.
Using normal processing settings there will only be subtle differences between the conversion preview and the camera JPEG. The tonal response will be slightly different, seeming slightly lighter or darker, and the colours' hue/saturation will be slightly different too. Also, depending on the camera, automatic distortion/vignette/aberration correction will be missing. This is all to be expected, and your expectations have been misplaced.
However, this is only a starting point. Whilst JPEG shooters can go on to process their images, the resulting quality will be inferior; JPEG is a finished image format. Raw shooters have much more to play with, and can manipulate the conversion's parameters to boost shadows, recover highlights, adjust mean exposure, increase/reduce/localise sharpening and noise control, apply processing gradients and masks, apply local contrast and selective saturation boosts, and correct your camera's colour response, as well as apply lens defect corrections—all before the conversion to JPEG.
So, you won't start to see the difference until you start to push these adjustments. You have been given a second (and a third and a fourth...) chance to create your JPEG using your own set of picture parameters, and the ability to change these parameters for each photo after taking the photo.
In your photo above, you can bring out detail in the shadows by boosting Fill and Blacks. As you shot in Raw, you will have a good amount of tonal resolution recorded in the shadows (assuming you didn't underexpose in the first place), which would be absent from a JPEG. You also have the ability to change the sharpening to suit the image, and even apply local sharpening where it's needed most (and less where it's not needed).
You also have the ability to modify Camera Raw's default settings how you like it. You can enable automatic lens defect corrections (like chromatic aberration—make sure you're on ACR 6.7). You can change the default camera profile (which dictates how tone, hue and saturation is translated) to a preset, or make your own using a calibrator. Do this and your starting point will be how you want it, not how Sony wants it.
I could go on, but I think you have probably heard much of this before. The main point I'm making is that you shouldn't expect to see a big difference straight away, but the possibilities you have created are much greater.

LR4 and Sony NEX-7 video files?
I just installed LR4 and imported files from my Sony NEX-7, including raw files and video (.mts) files. The thumbnail of the file has a little video camera icon in the bottom left, but no time lenth of video as I exprected. And when I try to open a video file, the starting frame appears but there is no control bar under the video to allow me to "play" it and using the Spacebar doesn't start it either. What am I missing in this process?
I had a similar issue with a Sony RX100. It was not supported by ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) until version 7.2. Version 7.2 includes the NEX 7 too. It may have been included in earlier versions, but I'm not sure.
ACR is the free Adobe plug in that has all the camera and lens correstions and adjustments. The camera makers create there RAW formats and Adobe then, one at a time, turns that into conversion data in ACR. At least I think that's how it works!
PSE 10 will only go to ACR 6.7. It won't upgrade ACR past 6.7. You have to buy PSE 11 to get functionality with ACR 7.2
The way it works it that you have PSE search for updates under the Help menu. When PSE 10 was new, it allowed me to update the ACR to 6.7. In fact it insisted I do it. The same was true with PSE 11. It alerted me that an upgrade was available.
A similar situation exists with Lightroom. My Sony camera would not work with LR 4. It had to upgrade itself to 4.2
If you don't want to deal with the Adobe details, Sony provides "Image Data Converter" that can make files from the Sony RAW images that PSE10 can work with.
Good luck!

Sony Nex 6 Raw image can't import to Aperture 3.4.5
Hi everyone,
I am not new to Aperture... but it is my 1st time trying to use my Sony nex 6 raw with aperture.
but sure what I did wrong.
here are my info
OSX 10.7.5
Aperture 3.4.5
Sony Nex 6
firmware 1.02
I have selected import, with SD card directly plug into the SD card reader on my iMac.
aperture was able to see the raw files, it does allow me to import.
but after imported, i click on the imported file, it shows "unsupoorted image format"
please help
thanks everyone!I have selected import, with SD card directly plug into the SD card reader on my iMac.
aperture was able to see the raw files, it does allow me to import.
but after imported, i click on the imported file, it shows "unsupoorted image format"
Have you tried to reprocess the raw after importing? Select the new import and use the command
"Photos > Reprocess Originals" -
i have recently brought a Sony Nex-3 digital camera, however the macbook is unable to process the raw data (ARW) file format
Can any one help or know if apple have a fix for this
ThanksYou could batch convert the files with Adobe Camera Raw to DNG, or maybe the software provided will convert them DNG for you. http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/
I currently have a bunch of files that I converted to DNG from NEF when I was using Lightroom, and Aperture 3 reads them just fine.
I know its a extra step, but until apple release a update to their RAW engine its a solution.

How is it possible that Aperture 3 does not support the raw format of the Sony NEX-3 camera? It's one of the hottest DSLR available right now do to it's compact size and has been on the market for nearly 6 months. No RAW support?
I'd rather take my camera back than have to switch to lightroom which added support 3 months ago…
Any suggestions? Anyone else have this camera? What can I do? I need a temporary work around, I MUST shoot in raw.You could batch convert the files with Adobe Camera Raw to DNG, or maybe the software provided will convert them DNG for you. http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/
I currently have a bunch of files that I converted to DNG from NEF when I was using Lightroom, and Aperture 3 reads them just fine.
I know its a extra step, but until apple release a update to their RAW engine its a solution.

I cannot open a Sony NEX-5N .ARW file in CS3, and I have the latest camera extension installed. I really want to ope the RAW file, not convert it to Jpeg firt. Any Whiz having it figured out yet? Sony is not helpful at all and I suspect them to really wanting to force you tu use their much less powerfull software, which does not offer what I need (don't asl what I need please, not my question, sorry)
Cheers!Latest CameraRaw (6.6) can not be installed in CS3 - it's incompatible.
And CameraRaw from CS3 does not understand your RAW files from new camera.
The solution would be to use free Adobe DNG Converter.
Download DNG Converter from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows (Windows) or here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh (Macintosh)
Then convert your proprietary ARW files (you may want to save backups) to DNG - DNG is a standart RAW format (open standard), and RAW data itself is saved untouched, just metadata is organized in a different way.
So you will keep RAW image data unmodified and will be able to edit it in any application that support DNG - there are a lot, including Photoshop.
After that you will be able to open and edit your images in CS3.
Another way is to update to CS5...
