however, I do point out that obtaining an additional hard drive and not throwing anything away seems a preferable solution to me.
heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

  • I keep getting an error stating that my disk is full in syslog. The file is empty and I want to stop it from logging data. Can I just delete the file?

Can I just delete the syslog file?

    Hello,
Yes, you can delete the file. A new file in Syslog directory is started each time that LabVIEW and the Tag Engine is started. You can either manually delete old files or write a simple VI to automatically delete files that are older than a certain number of days.
As an alternative, you can save these files into another folder, just to free up syslog directory space, and still have these history files for later use.

Hello, I want to upgrade to OS X Mavericks but it keeps telling me to free up space on my start up disk.  I deleted many files and I still cannot download it.  What do I do delete everything?  I do not even know how to check for available space on my laptop...I know, I know.  Anyone help me out if you can =)

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
You need at least 12 GBs of free space to install Mavericks plus another 6 GBs for the download.
Select your HDD icon. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the upper most panel you will see the information displayed: Capacity, Available, and Used. You want to know what's Available.

  • HT4972 i want to update my software version to 6.1.3. but my c drive runs out of memory and i cannot upgrade it at the end, but having to delete the files and gain  more space for the computer to operate... plz help me :(

i want to update my software version to 6.1.3.. but i have never updated this before and this is my first time.. im having 20 GB apps and music in my ipod. so when i click 'update and download' tab it starts downloading the new version and upgrading,... but afetr some time it says im having a very low memory in c drive and i would have to stop the upgrading...
can i use my external hard to save this download and upgrading files without using my c drive? plz give me a solution as im only having only 7GB of space left in the C drive

I would rather you delete/move other files to the external HD rather than downloading the update file to the external HD.
First try going here and delete any update files to regain C drive space.

  • I want to make space for ios7 update. Can I erase all the photos on my iPad and still get them later via iCloud?

Need more space on iPad. I have all photos backed up on iCloud, but will I be able to access later once I delete them of my iPad?

What I had in mind was when you sync to the computer you transfer the photos fom. Your iPad to the computer. Make sure the photos transfer to the computer then erase what you need to from the iPad. You'll still have the photos on the computer. Then upgrade to iOS 7 through the cloud and not do it through the computer and iTunes. Hopefully with the photos gone you'll have enough space to upgrade.

    Hey rgmhughes7,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the Time Machine backup disk is full. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • I want to delete the files and applications in the download  folder. I'm afraid something will happen to the applications already installed. Is it safe to delete?

Also, can I set the computer to periodically clean this folder? How?

There may be an app somewhere out there to do that, but in my book, that's just something else to complicate things. I have my downloads set to the desktop. I install the app and immediately delete the download (or, if I want to save it, move it to where I want it saved). Takes a few seconds and no housecleaning to worry about later. ymmv

  • My 'backup' is taking up a huge space on my hard drive but I have an external hard drive for my back ups - how do i get rid of this?

Please can you help - I have recently added an external hard drive to my Macbook so it can be used as a back up and storage to save space on my hard drive.  I have deleted videos and photos from my hard drive but they are being replaced with 'backup'
how do i get rid of this ?
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine makes local snapshots in all portable Macs with Lion or Mountain Lion. They are made in the internal drive and they are removed when your hard disk gets full, so you don't have to worry about it.
If you want to delete them, turn off Time Machine and turn it on every time you want to make a backup. You can also turn them off manually without having to turn off Time Machine, or you can delete those local snapshots > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html

  • Space on my hard drive:

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook and was wondering how to free up space on my hard drive. A guy at the Mac store here in Ottawa suggests moving stuff to my back up drive. What should I move? How do I move it there? I have 15 Gb free on my hard drive - should I even be concerned?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Richard

As a rule of thumb you need 10 GBs or 15% of your hard drive's capacity as free space whichever is greater.
    Your choices are:
    1. Install a larger hard drive in your computer.
    2. Purchase another external drive to which you can move data off of the main hard drive.
    3. Delete data files you no longer need.
    4. Repartition your existing backup drive to accommodate both a backup volume and a storage volume.
Do not copy files to your backup drive to free up space. As soon as you delete them from your main hard drive your backup program will delete them from the backup drive, and they will be lost. If you really need to move stuff to the backup drive, then you should re-partition it and make another volume to use for storage. You would then have two volumes/partitions on the drive - one for backup and one for storage. Your backup partition must be large enough to backup your entire main hard drive. If you use Time Machine then your backup partition should be at least twice the size of your main hard drive.

  • Boot camp does not give me the option to make a partition, instead it just gives me the options to download windows support software, install windows 7, etc. I do not want any of these, I want to set aside the space on my hard drive!

Hello, I wish to install Linux Ubuntu on my macbook pro by using boot camp to set aside space. Whenever I load the Boot Camp Assistant application out of the utilities folder in applications, it only gives me the options to download windows support software and install windows 7. I do not want this, I just want to be able to slide that little bar to set aside the space on my hard drive that i can use for Linux. I tried just downloading the windows support software but my internet is immensely slow and it has been an hour or so since it started and it's not even half way done. When this download is finished will i get the option to partition or will i just be faced with those same options?
I am on a 13" macbook pro, with apple OS X snow leopard version 10.7.2
A lot of the data on this macbook was transferred over from my old macbook i had.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
    Thank you for reading.

Well thank you for your honesty.  Apple requires you have to have a Mac to develop iPhone apps, ergo my foray into OS-Xland. No way around it that one except for running OSX in a VM, which would have probably saved me some quid, true enough.
BUT for those interested parties: VirtualBox has a startup script in /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox that will prevent OSX from fully booting on the initial (and required) rEFIt boot cycle. Once I temporarily moved that out of the StartupItems rEFIt went in as expected.
FYI, the openSUSE desktop running native is a little peppier than OSX native which was a nice surprise.  Now if the Mac just had more open source software we would have a deal. (:

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

The Kindle app is so you do not have to use a Kindle. Yes, he can have a Kindle account and not own an actual Kindle hardware device.
