HT3910 How to format and erase Lion 10.7.3 completely?
I've erased and reinstalled my Lion 10.7.3 but after rebooting, all my previous programs are also installed. How do I format and erase my HD completely so I get a clean OS like I had when I bought my Macbook Pro?
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

Can somebody please explain how to format and then reinstall Mac lion10.7 without cd
can somebody please explain how to format and then reinstall Mac lion10.7 without cd
You will need either an Ethernet or Wifi Connection to the Internet - USB Mobile device is not supported.
If you already have Lion installed you can boot to Recovery with Command R and use the Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD and then reinstall the OS from the Mac OS X Utilities.
You will need the Apple Id used for purchase if the Mac did not ship with Lion installed originally.
If you want to repartition the HDD you can use the Recovery Disk Assistant to make a recovery USB drive

As Always - Back up the Mac before erasing unless you are confident there is absolutely nothing on the mac that you might possibly need later.
If the machine is a 2011 build or later you might be able to boot to Internet Recovery with Command Option R -
External hardrive to use with Imac - how to format and to what?
i have my external hardrive i use with my pc

Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two and resize as desired using the sizing gadget. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the PC volume you just created (this is a sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT32) from the Format drop down menu. Click on the Erase button.
5. Select the OS X volume you just created (this is the other sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
You should now be able to use the drive on both platforms. One partition for OS X and the other for Windows. -
Dead hard drive-how to format and startup with new disk
I have a 9 month old non-retina MBP. I replaced the HD with an SSD when I bought it. It seems the SSD has stopped working and I need to replace it. Grrr. I do have a Time Capsule backup that I can use, but how do I install the OS on the replacement SSD? After I have the MBP running with the new SSD, I should be able to reinstall everything else from the Time Capsule backup. I have another MBP that I can use for assistance/transferring/formatting if this will be helpful. Will Apple store Genius help me to do this? I would not be surprised that any warranty coverage may have been voided when I installed the SSD. I could use the other MBP to format the new SSD before installing it.
Your computer has got Internet Recovery. Use it to restore your backup.
To start in Internet Recovery, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting. Then, open Disk Utility, choose your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as format.
Finally, close Disk Utility, plug the external disk with your backup, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow its steps -
Dear user, can i format and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.6.4, with another MacBook CD, because i lost the one that came with mine, thanks.
As you need to be on 10.6 to be able access the App Store to download Lion, either get replacement discs via Applecare (you'll need the MBP's serial number to get the right ones) or get the SL retail disc. I would recommend the Original disc replacement set (assuming they were 10.6) as they carry not onlyApple Hardware Test for your model, but the iLife apps other bundled sftware that isn't on the retail disc.
Once you've installed, and used Software Update to get to 10.6.8, you can then get Lion if you're feeling masochistic. -

1- format C: with use windows Pro XP.
2- how I change my operator system from XP Home to pro XP
3- how can I partitions my C: from 80GB to 20GB
thanks
Please ASAPHi
If you install the OS using Microsoft WXP full version at the beginning of the installations procedure there is an option who allows you to create the partition C. before the installation starts the partition will be formatted and prepared for the new installation.
You can install what you want. Buy the WXP Professional and install it on your Qosmio. All drivers, tools and utilities for WXP Home and Prof. version are the same.
Make attention about HDD free space for Qosmioplayer. The best tool for HDD prearrangement is a Partition magic. This tool is very powerful. -

HP ENVY- How to format and keep licensed windows?
Hi everybody,
I want to format my computer and reinstall windows though I don't think I ever typed in the license key (it was a year ago though).
when I go to:
right click on my computer -> properties
I have under windows activation the Product ID.
If I write it down is it enough for when I'll format and reinstall the same windows version?
Thanks,
Willy
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi,
No, the Product Id cannot be used to activate.
If you use OEM installation media ( ie Recovery Discs/Flash Drive ) the activation key is automatically read from the bios chip, however this key will only work for an OEM version and not if you install from a 'retail' installation disc.

External drive, how to format and partition?
Hey everybody!
I'm about to buy an external drive for my mac. I am reasonably capable on a computer, but I've never done formatting or partitioning so I have two questions:
1) I just want to check that I do not need to buy a mac-formatted drive. A little big of googling told me I could do the formatting myself with Disk Utility, just wanted to double check that that was true.
2) Once I get my external drive, what I want to do is create two partitions within that drive, one for my Time Machine backup and one for random files and movies. I'm not sure how to do that (apparently I might need to pick different formats for each in Disk Utility?) so if anybody could help out that would be brilliant.
Thanks
(if that helps, I have a MacBook Pro with a 512GB hardrive, and I want to buy a 1TB external drive)Hi,
Here is a link that will help you set up your external drive. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-an-external-hard-drive-for-use-with-os- x/
You won't need different formats for Time Machine backups and storage space partitions. However, given the size of your hard drive, 500 gb for Time Machine may not be enough. You could buy a separate one for Time Machine, budget permitting.
Check the size of your startup disk, and if it is only 250 gb or less, then 500 gb for Time Machine may be OK, for a while. It will soon fill up, but the older backups will be erased.

How to format MCP running lion?
im selling my MBP and i want to give it to the perosn clean of all my stuff and just have lion on it.
how do i do this when there is no disk?Apple has been changing the way they control Mac OS X. They have always avoided blatant control through registration and serial numbers for the software, but I expect they have been accumulating "crowd-sourced" statistics on where Mac OS X was being installed.
Traditionally, the DVD in the box with a new Mac would only boot that model (it was missing drivers for every Mac) so it did not get sold or traded as readily. The "Full Retail" DVDs would boot any model, but if you bought it, you probably wanted the DVD and were fairly likley to keep the DVD rather than sell it on to someone else. And traditionally, that Retail DVD cost about US$130 or so.
New information I learned recently leads me to believe that when a DVD still came in the box with a new Mac, it would still only boot the exact model it shipped with, but only a certain range of serial numbers. (This may be to reduce use of bundled software in "Hackintosh" PCs with a similar design.) For a variety of reasons, the price of a full retail DVD was dramatically reduced to under US$40, and the "Family Pack" for up to five Macs (at a slightly higher price) was introduced.
Now along comes the iTunes model for music, and the emerging model where you release copies of the "software" (music in the basic model) and now once you have bought it you can just re-download it and re-use it as often as you like. But you cannot sell it to your neighbor. And the cost is even cheaper, which tends to make it too much trouble to steal or sell it, "just buy your own, it's cheap."
So I told you that story to tell you this one:
• Erase the Hard Drive with one pass of Write Zeroes and no one can recover any of your old data, unless they dis-assemble the drive in a clean room and apply a lot of expensive technology to get back some of the data.
• Install Mac OS X 10.6 from a DVD and fully update it to 10.6.8.
Now If you choose to install 10.7, under the new model, it will be tied to your Apple-ID. If they have trouble or need to re-install it, they will need to buy a new copy.
My recommendation: If I were doing it, I would stop at 10.6.8 and point out it was "10.7 ready" and point out to the buyer they can get their own legal copy via download for only US$30. -
Disk repair failed / should I reformat my drive / how to format and restore
I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 model and upgraded to Yosemite. The performance on my MB is ok, but just out of curiousity I ran a disk verify, and was told I needed to reboot, hold down CMD / R and run disk repair. I did so and the repair failed. I was promoted to backup and reformat/restore.
Now, I do backup everything using time machine (not sure though if Parallels image is backed up). I do not however have any install disks for Mac OS.
My questions:
1. Should I even bother reformatting my HD?
2. How do I go about formatting the HD and then re-installing the OS and all of my apps, particularly given that I have no DVD
Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank youIf you have extra external HDD, make clone backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, then,
1) boot from external clone backup drive.
2) reformat internal HDD.
3) restore from clone backup drive with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. -
[HELP] How to backup and erase from computer
Hi,
my blackberry's keyboard don't work anymore. I have to return it to the shop.
But before, I have to backup, and moreover, erase personnal data from my blackberry.
But, even if I try that from my computer, I have to type my password on the phone, what I can't do because of the keyboard.
How could I at least delete the data ?
Thank youWhen you connect to your PC to use the BlackBerry Desktop Software to backup, you will be asked to type the password on the PC keyboard.

[Forum FAQ] How to format and combine PowerShell outputs
Format the output with “Format-Table” and “Format-list”
Sometimes when we query Powershell cmdlet, we would get ellipses in the result, which is not desirable.
In this scenario, we can use the cmdlet “Format-Table” and “Format-list” to view the entire output:
Get-Service | where{$_.name -like "BrokerInfrastr*"}
Get-Service | where{$_.name -like "BrokerInfrastr*"}|Format-Table –AutoSize
Get-Service | where{$_.name -like "BrokerInfrastr*"}|Format-list
