HT3924 Can I connect an iMac PowerPC G5 OS 10.5.8 (leopard) to a Mac Mini?
I have an older iMac PowerPC G5 OS 10.5.8 (iSight) and the lack of Intel and speed...AND capacity are starting to drive me crazy.
Can I use the monitor of the iMac and the dual Intel processors of the Mini to have the best of both worlds?
I see on the Forum that a newer model iMac is compatible as screen for the new Mini.
I can save a lot of money doing it this way and can get a very nice Mini value!
Thanks!
Tom
Hi Tom,
Migh try Screen Recycler...

And on my site a couple of people have converted G5 iMacs into DVI monitors, but that's a lot of work.

How can i connect a Wireless Keyboard and a Trust mouse with a brand new Mac mini?
How can i connect a Wireless Keyboard and a Trust mouse to a brand new Mac mini?
Go to the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar and select "Set Up Bluetooth Device". Follow the wizard.
Alternatively, if you haven't yet unboxed and setup the Mini, you can pair the keyboard to the Mini (and possibly the mouse). However, I would set up with a USB keyboard and mouse and pair the Bluetooth devices afterwards. -

How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.
How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.
You need to find out what video out you have on your iMac, and what kind of video inputs there are on your TV.
It will help to know exactly what model iMac and exactly what make/model TV you have.
Depending on the exact model iMac you have, it may have miniVGA, miniDVI, miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output. Your TV may have composite, S-video, component, DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs. Once you confirm what kind of ports your iMac and TV have, then we can probably suggest the correct cable or adapter so you can connect them to each other. -

Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?
Look up "screen sharing" in help
You can control your mini (which I am assuming you are hooking to your TV) complete from your iMac.
After you set up screen sharing, you can go to the finder, under the "go" menu choose "Connect to server" and then browse. Choose your mac mini's name, and look for the "Screen Sharing" button.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users:
Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users:
Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Users & Groups preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list, and then click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen:
Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password:
Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen. It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X. -

Can you connect an iMac to a Lynksys router without an airport express
can you connect an iMac to a Lynksys router without an airport express or base? I tried running it from cable>modem> wireless router and it doesn't sling to the iMac. The airport card in the Mac does seem to be on, and there is a network connection set up. It's an intel iMac7,1. I'm not familiar with Mac, I'm trying to help out a friend.
At my house I have the same configuration going from my PC to an old Mac laptop and it works fine.
I think my friend had her wifi network set up properly, or it wouldn't be showing in the list of networks when I check.
the router is a Lynksys WRT160N V3.
Oh, and if I do run her computer trying to use the wireless, I don't get an internet connection at all. I have to have it hardwired straight to the modem.
Sorry I've asked this twice, but I haven't had any luck. I must just not know where to find things on the Mac. I did try other places in forum before posting again.
Any ideas? ThanksWe don't know a thing about your iMac or what version of OS X it's running so it's very difficult to help you. Please note that information and also please complete your profile, then that infomation will be listed when you post in your next thread. You can complete your profile by clicking Your Stuff in the upper right of this page then click Profile and fill in the pertinent information.

If you mean does the network appear on the Mac when I look for it, then yes.
I think my friend had her wifi network set up properly, or it wouldn't be showing in the list of networks when I check.
the router is a Lynksys WRT160N V3.
I don't think she has the security code so I can check what's actually hooked up (the network name on screen at least appears to be locked). She's had the computer out to the shop and back recently and has never even run anything off the wireless.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to call her cable provider to sort it out. I'm hoping to avoid that. I don't know Mac at all. I could troubleshoot on my PC.
Ultimately, I want to be able to hook a Roku box to her TV to run Netflix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -

what cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me
You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
However, it it work fine on my late 2009 Mini with Mavericks -
Every time I try to connect to the iTunes Store I get this error message

Make sure your network connection is active and try again."
2011 2.3 GHz i5 Mac Mini

Anyone know how to fix this? Every reference I have found is old, nothing recent like Lion or newest ver of iTunes.

I would say no since this

says the 1G Apple TV uses the same card as a Mac Pro and those do not work in a G4 Mac
