HT3945 I get an "error opening the database for the library"/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". What do I do Now?
I have updated my Aperture 3 and when I try to open it I get an error message; error opening the databese for the library"Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". I have tried the Command/Option keys to get past the error but I can't. Does anyone have a recommendation or document to help me get Aperture working again? Thanks.
I have tried the Command/Option keys to get past the error but I can't.
Did you try the "Command/Option keys" when you were launching Aperture? Then try again, by holding down "Command/Option" while double clicking your library in the Pictures folder.
If this does not succeed, have a look at the permissions of your library package in the "Get Info" panel: select the Aperture Library package in the Finder and press cmd-I. If you see that you do not have read/write permissions, correct that and select the option to apply these permissions to the enclosed items.
If you still cannot open the library, launch Aperture with the "options-key" hold down and select to create a new Aperture Library from the pop-up menu. Hopefully this will enable you to launch Aperture again. Then try to import your old library into the new, empty library by using the "File -> Import -> Library/Project" menu command. If your library is large, this could take a long time, however.
Post back, if you this does not solve the problem.
Regards
Léonie

Aperture working on OS 10.6.8 then Library Update rqstd on Aperture 3.2; said yes;
now Aperture won't open, get msg "error opening data base for the library "~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary"
TIme machine won't load backup "error code -8003"
Tried reloading Aperture 3.2 but get same result. You’re running an outdated copy of Safari on your Desktop. That won’t work.
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Check that the Safari application is in that folder. If it is, use it, and delete the copy on your Desktop. Never move or copy built-in applications.
If you've deleted Safari from the Applications folder, back up all data, then reinstall OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin. -

Recently I had to install windows 7 in my notebook because XP doesn't have more support. Before installing I backed up all my files to my external HD. Now that I instaleed windows 7 and also installed Acrobat Reader XI, I just cannot open any of my pdf files created prior to installing windows 7.
Looking for help online, I found the solution of security and giving me access as an administrator to all my files, but it still keeps the same...
Can some one please help me out?? I really need to work on many of this files ASAP.
Thank you all in advance for you attention,

I have three aperture libraries. But just recently two of them (old from 2011) will not open. I get the following error: There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Family IIi.aplibrary”. Please help, thanks
Are all three libraries under your account or are they in different accounts? Any other errros on the system?

What is the best way to copy aperture library on to external hard drive? I am getting a message that say's "There was an error opening the database. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported". What does that mean? I am trying to drag libraries (with metadata) to external HD...wondering what the best way to do that is?

Hi Shane. Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
Thanks,

When I try to open my Aperture Library, I get this message: "There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/alyssabouma/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the library....Help!!lyssalou,
what is your Aperture version and what is your MacOS X version?
What happened, before this problem occurred? Did you import images, install software, move the Aperture library?
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the library....Help!!
What do you mean by reinstalling the library? Did you reinstall Aperture?
You might start the trouble shooting with using the Aperture Library First Aid Tools - repairing the permissions, repairing the library, and rebuilding, if necessary, see:
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
Before rebuilding the library, make a backup of the Aperture Library, if you do not have one.

Trying to open Aperture, but I get the message, "There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/davewasson/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. - and it forces me to quit. What do I do?
Dave-
You can try opening the old (problem) library by launching Aperture into Library First Aid mode and choosing to Repair (first option) or Rebuild the library. Before doing this, make a backup copy of the old library, since both Repair or Rebuild will write changes to the library database.
Repair is the faster and less drastic option, so try that first: After backing up your library, hold down both the Option and Command keys while dragging and dropping the problem library on the Aperture icon. The Photo Library First Aid window appears. Select Repair Database, then click Repair. After some time Aperture should open the library, if possible.
If that fails launch Aperture back into Library First Aid and select Rebuild Database. Depending on the size of your library this operation could take some time, up to several hours for a very large library. When the main window appears you may have some extra Recovered folders/projects. This operation rebuilds the library from scratch and is usually successful at reviving problem libraries. -
I just bought aperture and downloaded it from app store. when I try to open the app I get a warning message that says: There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. The only option the is to quit. What is wrong?
Hi,
not sure what the problem might be, but you can try the following:
While pressing ALT+CMD on the keyboard, click on the Aperture icon in the dock: Aperture then opens in a special "recovery mode", and you're prompted to choose what kind of repair you need: Repair Permissions / Repair Database / Rebuild Database
Considering the situation, I'd recommend you to try "the "Repair Permissions" option first.
If that isn't enough (and it may well be the case), then go straight for the "Rebuild Database" option; it's a non-destructive opration anyway, but since you've just installed Aperture you shouldn't have anything valuable in the default library...
NOTE: if you do have some pictures in the library, instead, do a backup first! Time Machine is your friend
Another option would be to launch Aperture while keeping only the ALT (option) key pressed: Aperture will ask you what library you want to open, or you can choose to create a new one from scratch.
Good luck!

There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/stacia134/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. Why am I getting this message and how do I correct it so that I can open Aperture???? any suggestions would be most appreciated
Then I'd check the system drive, if it has problems.
To check your System drive boot into the Recovery Partition, see: OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up.
You will see a panel, where you can use Disk Utility to check your System Drive. -
Library recovery: how can I recover a library after I get this message: "There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/Jim/Pictures/Libraries/K2 Library.aplibrary”???
Thanks a lot, Frank. The lsregister did the trick! I am testing this on 10.8.2.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24770 : I deleted the "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist", and restarted the Finder, even logged off and on again; did not change anything. The file has not been recreated, so it may not be used anymore.
http://itpixie.com/2011/05/fix-duplicate-old-items-open-with-list/#.ULZqa6XAoqY
The direct "copy and paste" from the post did not work: I had to retype it :
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
but then it worked like a charm!
Cheers
Léonie
And btw: I turned on the "-v" option for the lsregister to see, what was going on, and saw plenty of error messages (error -10811); so I repeated the command with "sudo". After that I still saw five iPhotos. Repeating as regular user finally got rid of the redundant iPhoto entries. It looks like registering as super user may be causing this trouble. -
When opening Aperture I get Warning that says "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Desktop/Feb 12, 2011.aplibrary.” That's it. The program does not open at all. I'm concerned that my pictures may be lost. Does anyone know how to deal with this Warning?
Might just need to rebuild the library...see this link:
