HT3946 I upgraded from Aperture 1.x to 3.5.1

I upgraded to Aperture 3.5.1 and have run into an issue.
I upgraded the software and also moved all my originals from my MBP's disk to an external storage (WD passport). A few projects now have images that are seemingly offline. The browser shows the thumbnails but the photos are apparently offline. How do I get the application to see the originals that are lying right there on the disk? I tried relocate originals from the FILE menu but it doesn't seem to work. Is there a way of pointing the software to the entire folder?
Help please!
Thank you!
regards,
dv

I upgraded the software and also moved all my originals from my MBP's disk to an external storage (WD passport).
Did you move the originals manually, using the Finder? If you used the command "File > Relocate originals" Aperture should have had no problems to keep track of them.
How do I get the application to see the originals that are lying right there on the disk? ? I tried relocate originals from the FILE menu but it doesn't seem to work.
To reconnect the originals use the command "File > Locate Referenced files", not "relocate".
Select all images that are ofline at once from a smart search with the added rule "File Status is offline (or missing)".
Then use the command "File > Locate referenced Files".
You will see a window with two panels: In the upper part select an image that needs reconnect.
In the lower part select the location of the original file.
When the "Reconnect" buttons become active, use the button "Reconnect all"

  • Upgrading from Aperture 2-3. What happens to referenced images?

I'm upgrading from Aperture 2 to 3. I have referenced images on some external hard drives. Will my referenced images be okay and still read correctly from my HD if I upgrade?

    Hi
I had no problems it retained the Referenced File location info you will have to ensure the externals connected.
If they are not linked as indicated by a red line through the referenced file icon bottom RH corner
Select the images that need reconnecting and then go to File / Locate Referenced Files
You will get a dialogue box which enables you to find the Referenced File/s then click Reconnect or Reconnect All
I just had to do it because I renamed an external drive
    Hope this helps

  • Upgrading from Aperture 2: Trial or Buy?

I already ordered Aperture 3 as an upgrade and am waiting for the box to arrive in a few days. Is it safe to download the trial in the meantime and upgrade or should I wait for the box? I seem to remember that when Aperture 2 came out there was a problem with switching from the trial-version to the real thing.

I think the correct answer is to download the trial. When you launch the trial it will ask you if you want to buy the software. In that case you don't need to order the box. Unfortunately I ordered Aperture 3 Upgrade from Apple Store before launching the trial (great faith in Apple) so now I just need to wait for the box. I wonder why they can't say at Apple Store that you can also order the download without the box... Not possible to use the trial with the existing Aperture Library - it will only allow a trial library.

  • Has anyone had aperture lose your album content when upgrading from aperture 2 to 3?

I was using Aperture 2 then wanted to get all my pictures to iphoto, so I upgraded to aperture 3 to so the databases would be swapable to iphoto.  In that process up updating Aperture all of my photos are still in aperture, but all of my albums are now empty.  So I lost all of my organization.  Any ideas what happened and how I can undo it?  I did not have a time machine backup and did not backup the database before the upgrade.

You may try to repair your Aperture Library. This should have been done before upgrading, because a corruption of the library can cause problems when upgrading, but perhaps you can still fix the missing albums. Use the Aperture Library First Aid tools (see: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual) to repair permissions and repair the database, or to rebuild it, if necessary. But make a backup of the library, before doing this, just to be safe.

  • Upgrading from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3: Upgrade issues

    1) I installed Aperture 3 from my upgrade disk. I am getting a message that there isn't enough memory in my Aperture library... I have 13.45 gb of space on my Macbook Pro's hard drive.
    2) I have a lot of images, Aperture projects located outside of Apeture in folder and a few Aperture libraries on an external hard drive that I want to be able to use with my Aperture 3, how can I be sure that I will be able to access & use all the information on my external hard drive with Aperture 3
    3) I connected my external hard drive to my Macbook pro and was going to update Aperture 2 to 3 but first wanted to backup my computer but now Time Machine is telling me that my backup failed but I can't figure out why. I have 222gb available on my external hard drive.
    4) Now I can't access my Aperture library without completing the upgrade, but I can't complete the upgrade because Im getting the error message "Insufficient Space There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library Volume" huh?
Anyone have a clue what is going on??

You did not mention what OS version you are running. There is a technical paper somewhere in the Apple site (?) about removing the Aperture library from Time Machine backups. I know this could be outdated, but are you aware of this?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1878
THe issue of running Aperture while restoring still applies.
To open Aperture 3 and start with a fresh library you can do the following:
Start Aperture holding down the Option key. This will allow you to create a new library. Create this library on your external drive (navigate in the window to the location desired on your external) and make sure you name it something different than the original Aperture library name. Now Aperture 3 will be installed on your computer.
Open Aperture 3 with this new Library. Now you can merge the libraries OR perhaps switch from the current library to your original version.
Make sure you have a full backup of your library before proceeding.

  • How do I upgrade from Aperture 2.1.4 without having to pay?

I currently have Aperture 2.1.4 installed, but would like to update it to an available version that doesn't require me to pay for the update. It appears that if I try to download Aperture 3.X.X, that it expects me to pay for it. Can't someone simply update their existing version of Aperture from the existing version (2.1.4 in my case) without having to pay for the update? When I click on the "Apple" icon in the upper left of my desktop and select "Software update..." it only comes back with an update for ITunes and Safari. This doesn't seem to make sense, because my current version of Aperture (which is 2.1.4) is not the latest version, not even if I want to stick with version 2.X.X. There are clearly newer versions of Aperture on the download page, without having to transition to version 3.X.X, but my "Software update..." doesn't identify it. Is every update of Aperture (even from 2.1.4 to 2.1.5) considered an "upgrade" that has to be paid for?

Updating, that is going from minor number to minor number (ie: 2.1 to 2.1.4) is free,
Upgrading, that is going to a new major number (ie: 2 to 3) is and has always required  purchasing the new version.
Sorry but there is no way around this. However remember you can now purchse Aperture from the App Store so while not cheap it is very much less then what is was from the Apple Store.

  • Upgraded from Aperture 2 to 3 and now photos are no longer in photo book

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded my copy of Aperture from version 2 to 3 and after my library had updated everything seemed fine until I looked at a photo book I was working on. It appears that all of the photos that I had placed in the book are no longer there, and I am now left with a blank template.
The album I built up of photos to include is still there, they just aren't arranged on the pages of the book. Has anyone else experienced this, and if they have are there any suggestions for a solution?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Not enough disk space to upgrade from Aperture Library

My Aperture library is about 140 GBs (I've also got an iPhoto library, which is about 40 GBs, and I don't know for sure if all the stuff in there is in my Aperture library.) I've got about 23 GBs free, and when I try to upgrade, Photos tells me it needs an additional estimated 29 GBs. What options do I have at this point? I'm wondering if this would work:
    - Copy Aperture Library to an external drive.
    - Delete the library from the internal drive (scary. Yes I have backups, but still scary).
    - Open Photos, and point it to the library on the external drive.
Would that create a Photos library on my internal drive with all the contents of the external library? I'm worried that it would reference all the files on the external, and then I would always have to have the external drive connected to use Photos.

Okay, that's not an option. Does it need this 29 GBs just temporarily for the upgrade process? I was under the impression that the new Photos library simply references everything in the Aperture/iPhoto library, so shouldn't take up more space than what you had before. So I'm wondering if I delete some things to free up the 29 GBs, if I can run the upgrade, and then put the things back that I deleted. But if it really wants 29 GBs permanently, I'm in trouble.

  • How do I fix aperture 3 after upgrade from Aperture 2 to 3?

Hello. I have had a good search but can't find the answer.
    1. 2 days ago I made a full time machine of my mac
    2. local mac shop did a clean install from 10.5 to 10.6.8
    3. local mac shop then installed aperture 3
    4. I then tried to update my new 10.6 mac from the time machine (using migration assistant). All went well (the files are accesable), but the files do not exist in itunes, aperture, documents etc when logged in as the user created when installing 10.6.8.
The new OS has a diferent user/profile to the original one (I did not do the clean install of 10.6.8 and aperture 3, the local mac shop did). This meant I had permission problems, so I went into the original user (the one that the time machine had rebuilt) and added the new build user with full read wrire permissions.
How do I now add all my projects and photos from the original profile/user to the new one?
I havea 20 inch imac with 4 gb ram with 700gb hardrive of which 600gb is used and of that, 400gb is photos. I also havea a 4tb external drive I can use to switch things over with if required. That currently had data on it fromthe time machine backup under 10.5.
Any help will be really appreciated. Many thanks.

Do still have the Trial App installer disk image? Then just run the installer again and enter your serial number to unlock the application.
Also have a look, if you have an "Accept Purchases" tab in your App Store Window, and if you see Aperture there. Then click the "Accept" button and download it.
But if neither of these works, contact Apple Support (with proof of purchase) and ask for help - maybe they will provide a new installer. Aperture cannot be just copied - it needs additional files installed in the System Library, and only the installer will do that properly.
For me it worked to restore Aperture from a Time Machine backup using Migration Assitant and including the System Library and the Applications Folder into the migration settings. Then enter again the serial number. But that should only be the last ressort, for this way you will not have a clean install of your system.

  • Cost of upgrading from Aperture 2 to 3

My wife and I have identical IMacs and I bought Aperture 2 for them last year. It was good for 3 computers, I think. Just upgraded her to Aperture 3 for $99 or so. Question is... do I have to shell out another $99 for my machine.

The Aperture SLA says one desktop computer and one laptop computer as long as both computers are owned and used by you:
    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/aperture.pdf
See the paragraph 2b for the Single User License.
If it were me, I would either call or email sales or support and clarify if you can use on both iMacs (they may be willing to let that go). The proviso is that you cannot have both machines running Aperture (loaded in memory) at the same time if installed with the same serial number.
Your better bet may be to look into the Mac App store version (although I see your info says OS X 10.5.7 which would rule that out).
It certainly won't hurt to contact Apple to be sure.

  • Upgrade from Aperture 1.0

    Hi,
Years ago I purchased my Aperture 1.0 software which I would like to upgrade now to 2.0. I found the instal disc but cannot find the serial to be able to upgrade and save 100 €. Can anyone advise where I could get the serial of my copy? The 1.0 is not installed on the current computer
    Thanks: Szimi

  • How do you upgrade from Aperture trial version?

I have the Aperture trial version. When I open it, I get an option to buy it....and I have just three days left on my trial.
So I click BUY - and everything flakes out. It opens a window or two, along with Safari, with a URL that doesn't work - http://www.itunes.com/mac/aperture
One of the popups displays the price. When I click it, it says I can't buy it because it's already installed on my computer. I don't have a clue what's going on.
    Thanks for any tips.

To buy Aperture you get the best deal from the App Store, not the Apple Store. The Trial Version has been discontinued. To be able to download from the App Store you have remove the Trial Version from the Applications Folder, but keep your Aperture Library and all the presets in your User Library. Then you should be able download Aperture from the App Store.
What is your OS version? You will need 10.6.8 or 10.7.3.

  • Hi, I have just upgraded my Aperture from 2 to 3 and cant find a desaturation brush which was amongst the tools in Aperture 2.

Hi, I have just upgraded from Aperture 2 to 3 and cant find the DEsaturation brush which I used to select from Image>Edit in A2 and does not come amongst the brushes from the Photos>Add Adjustment> or Quick Brushes in A3. Does anyone know where to find this essential tool?

there is no quick brush that you can do directly from the tools on the top of the screen if you're working in Full Screen mode?
In addition to the "Enhance" sliders that Frank pointed to, I see the "Saturation" in the "Brushes" Drop-down in Full-screen mode.
Only you have to set the amount of saturation first to a low value using the slider in the "Saturation" brick of the adjustment panel.
You may have to add the "Saturation" brick first to the "Adjustment" tab from "Add Adjustment > Quick Brushes > Saturation"
To add a "Saturation" brick permanently  to your adjustments click the cogwheel in the Saturation brick and enable "Add to Default Set".
You can also save the setting - with the adjustment slider positioned as you want it - as an Effect:
Effects > Save as an effect.

  • Existing stacks not working after upgrading to Aperture 3

I am having an issue regarding my stacks after upgrading from Aperture 2 to the new Aperture 3. When I select any of my existing stacks that came over from my Aperture 2 library to Aperture 3's library, my stacks will not expand to show my images associated with that particular stack. Also, when I click to expand the stack, instead of showing how many images are in a stack, it shows "1 of x" (x being the number of images associated with that stack). When I go to unstack, it removes all of the stacked images, only leaving the pick visible in Aperture 3. This only happens with my existing stacks; it does not happen when I create a new stack in Aperture 3. Anyone else having this issue?!? Is there a solution to rectify this problem?

As strange as this sounds, I may have solved my own question! I created a new blank project, and then I took the photos from the "Photos" section in the Library, and clicked and dragged them in -- and low and behold, the stacks were there! It took the photos out of the original project and moved them to the new project -- stacks, edits, and all. If anyone else is having this issue, this might be the fix.
