  • Why won't my optical drive open unless there is a disc in it?

I bought my eMac (1.25Ghz, USB 2.0, MacOS 10.5.8) from my school last Friday, and have been fixing little glitches, deleting old files, etc. I've finally gotten everything in almost perfect working order except the optical drive. The drive itself seems fine and reads CD's no problem. The only problem is that the drive won't open on it''s own, I have to use the little paperclip hole everytime I want to open it. However, once the disc is in, it will read and eject the disc normally, but once the drive is empty again, I have to use the paperclip to get it open. I don't know if it's a hardware or software malfunction. Help!?
P.S. It also spits out DVD's. I thought it was supposed to be able to read them (it reads CD's just fine), but it just gives DVD's back.

I took off the face plate inside the the tray to make sure there was a spot for a Airport Extreme card (there is, and I'll be getting one =D ), and I noticed an eject button on the disc drive itself (right hand side), upon pressing that, it opened up just fine, so we can assume the drive works fine, however, I also noticed a little green light on the left hand side that is not illuminated. Should it be? Does this help at all? It's strange that the eject button on the drive works, and then it reads the CD I put in it, and will eject it with the button on the keyboard, but once I took the disk out it became inert again. =S
Also, when I put the disk in, I went to the about this Mac, and then to ATA and it showed this:
Without a disk it shows this:
I think I had originally been looking at Serial-ATA which just says:
This system does not contain any Serial-ATA devices. If you have any Serial-ATA devices installed, please check that they are connected and powered on.
    I hope this helps.

  • Please Help-Problem with Optical Drive, it's a Mystery...

Well I'm a fairly big Imogen Heap fan, and her new CD came out the 25th. So I went to Best Buy and I bought the deluxe version which includes a seperate disc with instrumentals. I got home, put it in, and my Mac made a "scratching" kind of noise, then it spit out the disc. I figured there was a problem with it, I went back to Best Buy, got a new one, and it did the exact same thing.
HOWEVER, both of the instrumental discs worked just fine, and imported just fine. The normal audio disc also works on my Ubuntu computer, Windows computer, and my other Early 2009 Macbook Pro. I also restarted my Mac, cleaned the disc, and that did nothing.
So, what's the problem do you think?
(Also I went to Apple but there were no appointments available, and they were too busy to just look at it without an appointment )

    Hi Mate,
    I didn't do an OS install, I took it to an apple store and made a Genius Bar appointemnt. Explained the proble and after 15min conversation, they diagnosed it as teh following;
The felt/rubber where you put the CD/DVD had gone hard and the friction is causing the CD/DVD to get stuck and be loaded. They tried to tell me that I need to replace the top case  (£140+VAT) as its in-built into it or I can use a £3 spudger to push the CD's in......needles to say the Spudger works fine.....Shame I wasted £100 on the new optical drive ;o( Maybe sell teh spare on eBay....Happy days!

  • I had a multimedia optical drive, but now it is missing, why?

The multimedia optical drive always worked very well, then I had a new battery installed.  Could this be the problem?

Does it appear in Device Manager, it it does right click it and Scan for Hardware changes or update Driver.  Same deal if you see Unknown Device.

  • Problem with optical drive

    Hello
I backed up all my files onto a DVD. Then formatted and reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate. At first I could access the files on my DVD, now It says I must format the disk in drive D before I can use it. When I cancel, it says D:\ is not accessable. Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
    Thanks

    Hello again RicTech,
I am glad to hear you were able to access the files. The only thing I can think of given what you have posted is to check to ensure that you have updated the optical drive drivers on your computer. To do this I would recommend running the HP Support Assistant to update all your HP drivers and ensuring that you have run all your Windows Updates as well.
If you could re-post with the results it will  help others in the future that have the same issue. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • I have a problem with optical driver

i have a desktop with internal internal disc driver and it doesn't read or recognize a dvd or cd. I cleaned using a laser  lens cleaner dvd and still doing sametinhg
ejects DVDS. My desktop is 2006
Hardware UUID:          00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CB83C3E3. Can i replace the optical drver? please some advise . Thanks.

Believe it or not, sometimes the optical drive issues are due to the PRAM battery getting low.  You are right at the age where it might make a difference.    Have an authorized service technician see if that makes a difference.  If it doesn't, then get an http://www.macsales.com/ optical drive for your machine.

  • Optical Drive makes noise when lid closed

    Hello all.
When ever my wife closes her MacBook the optical drive makes the noise as if it is being awken from sleep. The problem is that it does this over and over. The only way to stop it is to power down the computer. It does not do this when the computer is active, only when the lid is closed. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know what the problem is and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks
    rx

    rx,
I am having this exact same problem with my Macbook as well. I am very frustrated. My computer will be 2 yrs old in August. Within the last few months, I have had the battery replaced for burning up the computer (June '07), the optical drive replaced (Nov 07), and the hard drive replaced (Feb '08). It appears I am going to have to take it back to the mac store to get this fixed. This has been going on for a month and I have tried everything including Disk First Aid to try to get it stop! Please post if you find something else! Meanwhile, I will say the apple care warranty was a better investment then the computer itself. I have been VERY DISAPPOINTED with the product and I have had Mac products for years (Mac Performa, iMac, eMac, iPodmini).

  • Optical drive making noise when waking from sleep

    Hello everyone.
I recieved my MacBook about three weeks ago, and haven't had any problems with it. Hope I never will have.
One thing that bothers me, however, is that when it wakes from sleep, the DVD-drive makes a noise - as if trying to read a disc that isn't there. The drive is empty.
This is beginning to get annoying, as I often use my Macbook in small classrooms, where being quiet is a virtue.
You have any idea what I can do to stop this madness? Hopefully it can be solved via. software, but what say you?
    Macbook 13" White   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB

It's normal. I believe the reason why it happens is that most drives, by default, when they have power applied to them, they start scanning to see if a disk is inserted. By this time (machine turns on), the OS or the drivers are not loaded to tell the unit NOT to scan, therefore it happens. Now if the OS or the drivers are loaded they could probably prevent it from doing that. Obviously that's only when the OS is already running and thus the machine is already on.
Luckily it's only once, but these kinds of issues have a long history to them... For example, back in the Amiga days, the machine would do automatic detection of floppy disks, and the way it did it was by moving the heads to a negative track, which would cause a click every second or so. Extremely smart of the engineers, because the drive wasn't supposed to support such functionality. At the same time it was extremely annoying to have the click happen! Finally some guys wrote some software to fix that, before too many people went insane from the clicking
Luckily our superdrives don't do something like that every second

  • Optical drive ejects disks when I put them in

I tried inserting a disk into the optical drive and it would eject it right after.

Since my machine was only 2 days old the genius bar let me exchange my mac for a new one after seeing the problem in action, he even tried the DVD in 3 other macs at the counter, 2 could read it and one could not. the problem was thought to be with a dual-layer DVD but he grabbed some other DVDs and it was able to read it, so whatever the difference between the 64-bit and the 32-bit DVDs of windows 7 is, that is what the problem is isolated to in my case. I got my new machine home and it still cannot read the disk. Same problem as before, it reads the disk and promptly ejects it, I think the firmware needs to be upgraded because it does this in windows, during a boot, or within snow leopard. Please let me know what else I can try before I take this machine back.

  • Optical drive becomes unresponsive when burning media to a disc

When I try to burn an iTunes playlist to a blank disc, the optical drive becomes unresponsive and heats up. Instead of burning media to the disc, the progress bar in the iTunes window becomes stuck on "Burning disc.....Initializing". The optical drive only settles down when the disc is "force ejected". Anyone else having similar trouble? Any help and tips are greatly appreciated.

Your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  Demonstrate the problem to the technician and they should be able to determine if there is a serious problem or not.
    Ciao.

  • Using the optical drive of a MacBook Pro from new iMac for iTunes

Can I connect my macbook pro to my new iMac (no optical drive) with ethernet cable and use the optical drive of the macbook pro to upload CDs to iTunes on the new iMac?

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

  • Optical Drive makes noise when waking from sleep

When I open my MBP it sounds like it is loading a CD.  Just anoying when your trying to be quite in a quite room.

Not sure. I have a late 2011 and I can't say where mine does it or not. But with newer system Apple changed how the EFI sets up the hardware and Sleep mode can go into the Deep Sleep Hibernate mode which is basically shutting the system down and writing the contents of RAM to the hard drive. Then when it is woken it read that data from the HDD back into RAM. With that is also might do a more thorough check of the hardware.

  • Optical drive makes noises when waking up

Every time I turn the machine on or wake it up from sleep, the optical drives lets out a little whine, as if checking if there's a CD in the drive. I find that very disturbing. Is there a solution?

    Dushkin,
its normal behavior-basically, as you said, the OS
checking to see if there is a disc in the drive when
it starts or wakes up. What I find more annoying is
accidentally hitting the eject key all the time and
    hearing the same noise.
ugh the mis-hitting the eject button drives me nuts. cuse i do it so often when going to hit delete while typing. sometimes it doesnt even make the eject sound(if ive already hit it a number of times i think it knows there is no disk to eject)
im still looking for a software program that can disable the eject button on the keyboard, but obviously dont want to do irrepairable harm to my computer so it looks like i will just deal with the mis-hits

  • I suffer from the problem of cutting picture and sound when Link Mac Pro with the TV via the Apple TV Is there a solution to the problem

Have trouble cutting (the delay) picture and sound when Link Mac Book Pro with the TV via the Apple TV Is there a solution to the problem.
(this problem is when I follow films in the sites and forums or watch the live broadcast of certain programs by using the browser Safari)
I want a solution TV Apple made meI feel disappointed

Has anyone else encountered or solved this problem?  Same thing is happening for me with a new MacBook Pro, 13" i7 and an Echo Audiofire 4.  It's not even clear to me from searching if this is the processor idling or the firewire port hardware.  Only thing clear to me from testing is that it does have something to do with using an audio interface - I don't get this noise plugging in my external hard drive, but I still hear it if I daisy-chain the hd through my interface.  Any help or recommendations appreciated - do pc firewire ports have this issue too?

  • Hard drive clicking sound when MBP in motion

    Hi all,
I just bought the new 15" 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro with the SD card slot, and I noticed that every time I move the machine vertically (i.e. upwards or downwards), I hear a hard drive clicking sound. Sounds like a single chirp... if anybody knows what I'm talking about. What's wrong with this, or is this natural?
    Thanks.

I think I have found our problem. We are not alone on this one. It actually concerns me after reading about this. Here is the link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1935
I found this under a different thread in this forum. Other users are hearing this when they "bump" the right side of the laptop or when they suddenly move the laptop.
