OS X sets an external display in extended mode automatically. If you want to mirror your MacBook's display onto the TV, press Command and F1 keys. For more information, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

  • Which imacs and apple displays connect to late 2008 aluminum macbook 13 inch for use as external display?

I have a late 2008 13 inch aluminum macbook and want to purchase an iMac computer or apple display to use as an external display for it while I'm at my desk.
I can afford up to $700 for sure, maybe up to $1000 and would like one that has built in camera and audio if possible.
I'd like to know what my options are as it seems not all are compatible.
I'll mostly be doing web browsing and photo editing in Aperture.
Also wondering if it's possible to sync 2 computers so that when you make changes on one it reflects the changes in the other. Like you can with certain apps like Evernote.
    Thank you for your help!

Yes he is right, Snow Leopard is your first step.  Once you have that you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion if memory serves me correct.  Some people were saying that Lion was a little sluggish with the aluminum MacBook but that Mountain Lion was great.  Personally I had Lion on it also and didn't think it ran badly.  10.6 was still with Rosetta (the program that ran power pc apps) but this is dropped on 10.7 and up.  Up until just the other day I still had the stock 2 gb of ram.  The firmware update happens with Snow Leopard and up so it should come up as a software update.  If not, it can be done manually as well.  The ram I purchased was 60 bucks for the 8 gb.  For Lion and Mountain Lion I have to agree with the above reply, that it would run alot better with at least 4 gb.  If you run that many apps at once then you are going to want as much ram as you can get.  If you add a solid state drive you will be amazed at the difference it will make too.

  • HT1338 MacBook Pro 13.3: Desktop screen will not come up when turned on.  Screen is blank except for an icon of a folder with a question mark on it, in the middle of an otherwise blank screen, laptop making a clicking noise.

My MacBook Pro 13.3 MAC OS  X v10.7 laptop will not come up.  Blank screen comes up, no color/desktop, etc., only an icon of a folder in the middle of the screen with a question mark on the folder.  Laptop making a clicking noise. Suggestions? Thanks!

It's under warranty. Take it in to have Apple fix it.
The "flashing ?" means the machine can't find the start up disk. The clicking noise is a give away that the drive is damaged.

Previous user installed iOS 7 beta on that iPhone.
Take it back and get your money returned. You

the ID that it is asking for is the only person who can
remove the security. That iPhone is worthless to you.

  • Hi . I recently updated my macbook air late 2008 to 10.7.0 from 10.6.8 . My google chrome , itunes and some other apps are not working .

i want to update to 10.7.1 , so i download the update from apple.com but its not installing " saying can't be installed on my disk . What to do ?
i all ready tried download the update again and again .... because i read somewhere in apple support that the update should be of more than 70mb but mine is of 60 or 58mb . Suggest me a way to update .

If you use Software Update it will designate the 10.7.1 specific for your model, and may miss somethings.  It is better to download the update straight off Apple's website.  Mind you, unless you know your software is not compatible with 10.7.2 or later, I recommend at minimum upgrading to 10.7.3.  That's where I found to be my happy medium with.   Run repair permisssion with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility when you are finished.  If you have any third party cache cleaning software remove it.   Especially remove MacKeeper if that got installed using these directions since it has given people more headaches than any.  The only utility you need is a backup utility.   And periodically let the machine stay awake running screen saver instead of energy saver.  This will keep the logfiles clean.  The combo updates are better than the delta updates.  Combo updates do multiple updates at once.

  • What are my options for having my case for my Early 2008 white macbook repaired?

I own an early 2008 white macbook and as most people know they were notorious for ending up with cracks in the plastic body. Well, mine has it's fair share of cracks and the little nob on the bottom used for securing the battery in place has also broken off. The computer still runs great and does everything I need, but the keyboard and trackpad are glitchy, the battery won't stay in place, and it just kind of looks bad with the cracks. How can I go about getting these things fixed? I read that apple was fixing the cases for free for a while if it was within 5 years of purchase but I was NEVER told about this even when I took the laptop into the apple store several times for general questions and I am now beyond 5 years since purchase. I've seen plenty of third party sites to buy new cases on, but is there any chance the apple store would be willing to replace it for me still a this point? Also, since the plastic casing is so prone to cracking is it possible to replace my keyboard with one of the keyboards from the late 2008 aluminum body to avoid future chipping or would this not fit my model?

Call an Apple store and ask.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

  • Cover/Case for 13" Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook?

I have a 13" late 2008 aluminum MacBook and am trying to find a cover/case (preferably the hard shell) that will fit it. I read that they are no longer made for this model so it will be hard to find. The websites I found that offer cases for this model were not able to say that it would be a guaranteed fit. After seeing so many reviews about how they don't fit this model, I am hoping that someone on here could direct me to a website that sells ones that will for sure fit.

    Go to OWC's site,
You'll see the selections on that page. Great company. No hassle returns and great support.

  • How do I upgrade to current OS for late 2008 alum. macbook (10.5.5)?

    Hi there,
My boyfriend recently purchased a factory restored late 2008 aluminum macbook (10.5.8, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 processor and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) and would like to upgrade the OS. Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems as though "you can't get there from here," i.e. we wouldn't be able to download the newest OS with the current 10.5.8. Does anyone have ideas on how we can update this OS to something less ancient?
    Thanks!

Back up your data, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

  • 13" Late 2009 White Macbook Kernel Panic

I inherited a late 09 white Macbook from a family member last year and have just started having problems.  I need it to hold out until February when I can finally buy a MB Air or MB Pro (still deciding...) and wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what was causing the kernel panics.  They are pretty infrequent at this time, but when they occur, it takes a good 5-10 restarts before I can finally get the computer back up and running.  Started out with 8 gb of RAM, took one RAM stick out and the computer didn't panic for another week...now we're back to square one with the 4 gb of RAM in the computer.
All I need to know is if any of you fine folks could tell me what the hardware issue is so I can find out if it's a quick fix that would last long enough to get a new MB in February.  I appreciate the wisdom of those of you who know how to decipher this--thanks in advance!

    Hi
It seems that there is a problem with some component in the motherboard, this happened with me too with my Macbook pro retina display. Take it to a genius bar, and tell them of this problem. They will replace the motherboard or give you a new laptop if its under warranty.

  • [Solved] Beachballs on late 2008 15" MacBook Pro MacBookPro5,1 with SATA II HD

Each time I upgraded hard disks in my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro ( MacBookPro5,1 ) I experienced increasing beachballs. The worst was my recent upgrade to a Seagate 1TB SSD hybrid drive.
I had lived with this pain for years and it appears a simple jumper change could have solved it. In my opinion all or at least some models of the late 2008 MacBook 15" Pros do not reliably support SATA II 3 Gbit/second.
See jumper diagram for Seagate drives. Note the diagram is showing drive laying hard disk circuit board side up. Other manufacturers may differ.
    http://knowledge.seagate.com/article...language=en_US
From what I uderstand my late 2008 MacBook Pro was designed to support SATA II 3 Gbit/second with it's Nvidia chip set. In fact every model from late 2008 appears to have support for SATA II.
Then in early 2011 they added support for SATA III 6 Gbit/sec which the 1TB ST1000LM014 hybrid drive also supports. ( Hopefully they got SATA III right in their first 2011 model year. ) Unfortunately for me I do not think they got SATA II right in their first late 2008 model year.
I hope this may help someone avoid the pain I experienced,

    Hi Mike,
I am not sure it is same issue if drive is not even recognized.  But I would not give up hope.  I know my late 2008 MacBookPro5,1 has this problem even though it was designed to work at SATA II 3 Gbit/second.  It may be possible that your 2009 model has a similar issue.
If the jumper works for you, then please cut and paste your MacBook's Hardware Overview.  It would be nice to see the Serial-ATA hardware too. Go to:

  • Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro (15in 2.4GHz) using 8GB of RAM

    Hi everyone,
I have a quick question to ask, What I'd like to know is why the Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro motherboard has a chipset (Nvidia) that can support up to 8GB of RAM but Apple are stating that the system can do only 4GB?
According to NVidia, The motherboard is fully capable of using 8GB of RAM but has been limited to 4GB by Apple and that this can be resolved by a simple EFI update.
The links below show a well known Apple parts dealer running tests on the system using 8GB RAM and claims that the OS X can read it perfectly but the programs will not use more then 4GB of the RAM.
I really don't understand why Apple would limit the system to use only 4GB of RAM and if Apple have any plans on releasing an EFI update.
    Thanks for reading guys

Economics 101: So if you want 8GB, you have to go buy a new MBP and pay another grand for the memory. After all, they are in the hardware business, right?
