HT3964 my fan on my iMac is noisy

My fan on my iMac is noisy - any ideas how to stop it ?

What kind of noise? Rattling could be dirty and unbalanced.  Squeaky could be bearings starting to go.  Going at full speed indicates it's either overheating or it thinks it is overheating.  The latter can happen if the system software monitoring temperatures crashes and the fans automatically go into safe mode.  Restart the computer and see if it clears up, or more trouble shooting is necessary.
I'll have to let an iMac expert take over from this point since I have a desktop and it's easy to open up and clean parts.

These instructions have recenty been modified. They used to read hold the power button in for five seconds after unplugging. I'd try it both ways.

  • The fan on my iMac runs on and off

It has been a while now and i didn't really think much of it but the fan on my imac keeps running really loudly on and off. i don't really know much of the terms people were using while reading other discussions but i want this noise to stop!! please help me!

When you close the applications does the fan slow after a few minutes or keep on sounding loud? If it quietens down then one of your aplications is is working hard and the fan is keeping things cool, if the noise does not stop then you could have a hardware fault.
Try resetting the Pram and SMC, link is to the SMC reset and the page has information on a link to teh PRAM info.

After that I think you will need some local advice, perhaps an Apple store.

  • How do I turn on the fans on my iMac to keep it from overheating? I used to be able to turn them on when I plugged in the computer and turned the computer on simultaneously but that stopped working.

how do I turn on the fans on my iMac to keep it from overheating?

You could use smcFanControl.  That will control the fan speed but be aware the fan is always running.  If you have a fan revving up due to overheating it could be because a temperature sensor is failing.  Try running Apple Hardware Test (on your second installer DVD -- boot with the D key) to see if can detect any sensor problems.

The fan on my imac runs fast and doesn't stop. I have to shut down the computer to get it to stop.

    Release the power button.

  • The fan on my iMac never shuts off?

The fan on my iMac never shuts off? Would someone be able to suggest what is the probable cause of this and what can I do about it?

Sometimes an SMC reset can help resolve this. If it fixes it but proves to be temporary a trip to the workshop may be needed:

  • Changing Fan Speed On iMac via Windows?

Well I've been browsing a lot about how to change fan speed on iMac from windows.  I use windows primarily for development and sometimes my computer can get pretty hot and my room can get really hot because of it.  So if anyone could tell me how to do it, it would be extremely helpful.  It would even be ok if it was low level assembly code.  I just want to change the fan speed on windows and I can't find a program to do it.  Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Oh it's fine!  I kind of wasn't extremely helpful because I have seen a lot of previous posts with not much results (they were a few years old though).  Yea the only reason I do use windows is because of .Net framework development :\.  I would like to switch to all java but I like XNA and Visual Studio.  Mono ***** so I'm just waiting for something good.  Anyways thanks for the help.  And if any low level mac programmer see's this, please tell me how you could go about this!
I'm sure if someone had disassembled OS X they could figure out how to do it.  (Not promoting this because I'm pretty sure it's illegal).

  • Trouble running hardware test on 07 iMac with noisy fan

    Hello
I have an 07 iMac with a noisy fan- I've tried vacuuming out dust from the back but want to avoid taking it apart if possible...
I read online I should run the hardware test, but since I am running Mavericks the Apple support advice is to run the original OS X install disc and restart (holding down D or Option+D)...
Long story short I got a replacement disc from Apple (I'd lost the original) but the iMac ejects it when I restart following the process above... could it be my bluetooth keyboard? Hopefully not since I no longer have the original hardwired one... or does anyone have any other ideas for either how to get to the hardware test... or fix the fan (without a third party app just stopping it)
    Thanks!

Try holding down the Option key to get the one time boot manager screen then select the AHT. Not sure as Apple moved it around on different install discs but it might be on the Applications discs and not the OS X discs.

  • IMac 20" Noisy HD or fans???

Hi! Can you hear the noise from your HD continually? I got a 20" iMac and a 250 GO HD with ref. like that : WDC WD2500JS-40NGB2. Is it a Maxtor?
Anyway. Everybody is talking about silent iMac 20"!! Mine is noisy... I've been told that you can just hear a fan if you put ear near to the iMac... I can hear it yes but i really have to have my ear next to the iMac. That's not the problem here.
The problem is i can continually hear another noise that drives me crazy.... Working in a silent place, it's really annoying. It's like a fan running but with a razor noise.... Being at 2 meter from my iMac I still can hear that noise.
May this could be the HD noise? It comes from the left of the apple on the front side of the iMac!
Is it normal or not? I can't read no experience like that with 250 HD.
Thanks for any info or advices

At this address (svm mac french mac magazine) you can see a video about the inside of the 20" iMac and they're talking about the cooling system of the iMac.. it seems to be cooled not by water but with vapor...
Anyway in this video you can see a big fan in the left corner , just under what it seems to be the hard disk.. This is exactly where my noise comes from!!!
This one is running as STRONG as i can FEEL it running, turning. When posing my hand on the iMac, at this place, it is trembling, vibrating.. CRAZY... if i touch the place where is the other fan (on the right side).. i can hear it but it's not running fast as the other one who is making this ()&)&)"/(ç?%=?* noise

One more time, people with iMac Core Duo 20" , can you feel it too vibrating?
This is the noise i'm complaining about...

  • REALLY noisy fan on 24" iMac

Hi. I got my iMac 24" September 2008. This year, or maybe late 2009, the fan started making small noises. Now, a week ago maybe, the fan is like a vacuum cleaner! I start my Mac, a minute or two later the fan is loud. I can hear that its going louder and louder when i turn it on. I've tried to reset the Systems Management Controller (SMC), turn it off and keep the power cable out for half an hour - hour.
I really hope someone can help me!

This design of Mac can get really dirty or dusty inside. You may need to have a tech clean it out for you if it is not too late for the bearing on that fan.
They replaced the display in my 17" Core Duo last summer and I was shocked at how much dust had gummed it up inside. The tech threw in a free cleaning. And I have a very clean home!
