HT3964 My iMac doesn't give off a sound when powered on?

I had my iMac serviced and they replaced the logic board, now I noticed when powering on, it doesn't give of a sound as before.  What could be wrong?

ZAP the PRAM (hold down Command, option and the letters P and R on startup, Keep them down until the computer restarts itself at least twice after the first restart) you shoud hear a bong on the restarts. if not, It is possible the speaker connectors were not reattached when the logic board was replaced, I would returne it to the repair shop and have it checked.

I really do not think it is the iPad or your network connection. Other users have reported this very same issue. Try this and see if it works for you - it may not work - but it's easy to try - harmless - and it has worked in the past for others.
Try signing out of your account and restart your iPad.
Go to Settings>Store>Apple ID and tap the ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Go back to Settings>Store> Apple ID and sign in again.

  • How do you reduce/turn off keypad sound when making a phone call

How do you reduce/turn off keypad sound when making a phone call?

If I understand the question correctly, it is not about turning off keyboard clicks, it's about silencing the beeps made when manually keying in a  phone number. With keyboard clicks turned off, the beeps still sound when keying in a phone number. If I'm reading the iPhone User Guide correctly, it explains how to turn off keyboard clicks but not how to silence the   beeps when keying in a phone number. The only way I have found to silence the beeps is to put the phone into silent mode.

I haven't had this problem myself but you might try pulling the battery and/or resetting the bios to defaults using the f9 key.

  • New iMac with 1TB Drive - Weird HDD sound when spinning down/parking

    Hi All,
Just got my 24" iMac and love it.
However after 1 day in operation, I noticed something weird about the hard drive (1TB Hitachi):
When powering down the system / putting it to sleep, the hard drive would spin down (obviously). The usual humming pitch would lower until there's almost no sound. However 2-3 seconds afterwards, there is this weird sound that scares me:
WOOOP... WOooop.... wooop... weeeep.. Sounding like the actual disc is unbalanced and slowly coming to halt... like a squeeking wheel only in much lower pitch.
The drive works fine in normal operation - speedy, relatively quiet (as to be expected with a 3.5" drive)... But this sound is really concerning me as I never heard something like this before.
Should I be concerned or can anybody confirm this HD model's behaviour as normal?
(I don't want to be stuck with a dead drive and lost data in 1-2 months)
    Thanks,
    Tom

I do not have the 1TB drive in my iMac so without hearing the sound it's hard to judge. I have heard drives make sound like you described and there been nothing wrong with it. It may just be the resonance from the drive spinning down. However like yourself I'd be a bit concerned as well. I would start by making sure you have your data backed up then run some diagnostics on the drive.
    1. Verify SMART status- Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select the drive on the left then look at the details down at the bottom. Or download and install SMART Utility: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
    2. Verify the directory- Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select the drive on the left then click on Verify Disk.
    3. Surface Scan- If you have Apple Care install TechTool Deluxe from the disk provided. Run TechTool and select the Surface Scan option. This will check every block on the drive.
If it passes all of the above I would feel fairly confident that the drive is fine but you still might want to give Hitachi support a call and ask them about it. If the noise still really bothers you call Apple support and tell them that the drive is making abnormal sounds and see if they will replace it.

  • How do I turn off the sound when an error message pops up?

There is an anoying sound when an error message pops up in FF. I looked in the preferences but there doesn't seem to be an option to disable it.

    https://www.liberiangeek.net/2013/07/how-to-change-or-disable-the-alert-sound-in-ubuntu/
Settings may have changed in a couple years in Ubuntu but this gives an idea of where to look.
Firefox itself does not have such sound notifications.

This is on Linux and not Windows but you are on right track.

  • How to turn off number sounds when dialing out?

?  I have the keyboard sound off already, but, when I dial out the numbers are not silent.

The keyboard is just that, ...the keyboard, ....used only for text, email and web.  The phone dialing screen is totally different and is uneffected by any changes you make to the keyboard settings.  The only way to silence the phone when dialing out is to either turn the volume all the way down (not logical) or to engage the mute slide on the side of the phone.  **Warning, ...both options also turn the ringer off or down.  I would like to see apple address this in the next update.  Users don't need to hear these loud numbers.

  • Iphone 4 plays email tone in ear speaker while on phone.  How do I turn off alert sounds when on phone?

When I am on a phone call and I receive a new email it plays the email alert through the ear piece and it is very loud and I am unable to hear the person I am speaking with.  I NEED to be able to turn off this notification when I am on a call only.
    How is this done?
    thanks

I could, but that would defeat the purpose of what I am trying to accomplish.  The point is to set it one time and forget it.  Also, with my email tone going off I have turned the phone to silent and the email tone blares out until it is done.  ***, shouldn't turning it to silent turn it to silent?
What I want to accomplish is when I am on my phone the only noise out of my phone I want to hear is the other caller!

  • Turn off iChat sounds when busy?

I can't quite believe this isn't a feature as it is in every other IM program, but...
Say I'm on a Gmail phone call.  I set iChat to 'Busy'.  But still people typing messages make the popup sound.  I can find no way to mute iChat sounds when I'm Busy.  As a result, the caller hears all these weird sound effects as the MacBook Pro speaker is right by the mic!
My only option is to quit iChat and appear offline to the person who was mid-conversation with me.  Not very friendly, not very 'Apple'.
Surely there is an easier way to 'mute sounds when busy'?

    Hi,
As Video and Audio Chats are Peer-to-Peer you can in fact log the Buddy List Off Line so it cannot make a noise.
Unfortunately this does not allow you to keep Text or sending Files to the Buddy you are chatting with.
You can also set System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects to a lower volume as this is the Volume the Alerts sounds are played at.  (It will also reduce the sound of " New Mail" if you have one set).
I tend to balance the Sound Effects Volume against the Master/output Volume so that they don't interrupt/distract from any conversation
They can be Turned Off In iChat Preferences > Alerts (Albeit one by one)
There is no Mute Alert Sounds button or setting in any of the menus.

  • Quiet, high pitched squeaking sound when powering off 60D?

I just got a 60D body yesterday, and I just noticed a high pitched, very quiet noise that happens for a second or two when powering the 60D off. My Rebel t3 does not make this noise so I was wondering if it's normal?

    TCampbell wrote:
That's the noise of the piezoelectric cleaning system. It vibrates the low pass filter (located just in front of the sensor) to shake dust loose.
In some cameras it sounds like a couple of squeaks. My 60Da makes the same noise. No reason for concern. Some cameras start out not squeaking when new and end up making the squeak later.
The good news is I have never heard of it actually being a problem.
No, the good news is that the OP is still young enough to be able to hear a squealing sound at such a high frequency!

  • New iMac doesn't switch off!

just bought a new imac 3 days back. When I shut it down last night it didn't shut down for a really long time. Today I needed to restart it and it wouldn't shut down. The the desktop screen with a 'waiting' icon that goes round and round kept flashing for more than an hour. I had to physically shut it down on both occasions. Is there a problem? I am new to iMac having used PC's all this time.

Yes, there is a problem, but if you just bought your iMac 3 days ago, the classic way to go is to call for some phone troubleshooting help.
Follow the instructions they are going to give you,
warranty covers all so it's free.
I guess after 3 days there is nothing yet unsaved that you would be sorry to lose, so,
have you tried reinstalling Mac OS X yet?
Reinstalling is not at all the way troubleshooting Mac OS X should go, still I was asking because if problem persists even after a reinstall, it means it could very well be a Memory (RAM) problem as well>
