HT3964 No video, no boot chime. Just a fan sound

Tried resetting my Macbook Air SMC (resetting Intel Mac System Management Controller). No luck. I stil hear a fan but no video (either laptop or extermal) and no boot chimes. Thoughts?

I should hav posted my favorite recommendation, what was I thinking:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
SMC RESET

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

Chimes, no video, no boot when video card installed. Cause?

Dual G5 2.0 (late '04?)
Used for 5 years, then system started suddenly powering off. Eventually wouldn't boot. Tried swapping out ATI X800XT vid card for a 9600 (both AGP) & it worked again for a couple days, then wouldn't boot again. Put it aside for a while, came back to it yesterday, and came to these conclusions:
1) with X800XT installed, the system (PSU) clicks once, then nothing. no chime, no lights, no fans.
2) with 9600 installed, it chimes, power light on & steady, fans start, I hear the HDD click once, then nothing. no video out. eventually the fans go into overdrive.
3) WITHOUT a video card, it chimes, light on, fans OK, and I hear the HDD running through what I assume to be a boot sequence.
4) I have reset the PMU and replaced the battery. Also tried CMD-CNTL-O-F. Nothing.
Thinking it might be the power supply? Where do I go from here to diagnose the cause?
If it's the logic board, I'll tear out the guts & sell on ebay. If it's the PSU, I've read about someone replacing it with a standard PC ATX supply (don't want to spend the $$ for a G5 PSU.)

OK, assuming you have file sharing enabled, when you bring the machine up without video card, can you connect to it from another computer on the same LAN?
The fact that either video card blocks the boot is suggestive of maybe a power supply problem, though in my experience an overload condition perceived by the power supply will result in a click from the supply and the machine powering down completely.
That was a situation I had some time ago before replacing the supply. What would happen was that in a non-safe boot, when the kexts for the Ultra6800 loaded, the current draw would increase and the supply would trip itself off. (Puzzling mystery solution revealed just now in formulating the reply. Thanks.)
That being said, the fact that safe boot doesn't help plus the other differential symptoms between the cards really does suggest a failing power supply. A new supply around the web is on the order of $200, but there are plenty of used ones on eBay for much less, occasionally even a new one goes at a bargain.
One thing you could do is blow the probably well-stocked dust supply out of the power supply. Better to remove and do that outside, but you can make something of a dent with the power supply in the enclosure. Just be sure to do it outside, because the dust that can come out will probably be pretty nasty. (Of this I have personal experience!) Of course, under what you have reported, this has a slim chance of actually helping.

Mac mini won't boot, shows no video, no startup chime, startup light is on

Hello everybody,
I have a strange boot up problem with my Intel Mac mini. I think, the problem appeared after the 10.4.7 update and I believe I installed the first installer, which has some missing graphics drivers.
Anyway, the problem is that when I want to start the mini, the light at the front goes on and that's it. No startup sound, no video, just a little sound from the fan (very calm). I already resettet the NVRam, used a different monitor, resetted the PMU and the SMC. Between all these resets, sometimes the mini changes its behaviour. It then turns on the fan on full speed, the light stays off and still no video and sound.
Has anybody any tip for me? Every tip is greatly appreciated.

Ahem...Don't know how to say that but to make it fast I had the very same problem with my core duo after 3 weeks of use, and in my case it had nothing to do with 10.4.7 update (not published at the time). It ended up taking back the mini to the Apple Center for service : motherboard had to be changed.
The mini has been fine since, very happy with 10.4.7 update !

MAcbook Air 11" - No video on boot & Fans go nuts

I have read a fair bit about this, but nothing is fixing this intermittent issue.
I turn it on, screen stays black then the fan kicks in at top speed.
Shutting down just ends the fan but restart does nothing.
Have tried PRAM etc, have the latest versions of all firmware and updates.
Sometimes it does come on, but mostly, it doesnt. Off to Apple store obviously, but is this common, if I can fix it myself I would rather not get down to the Apple Store.

Try to reset the SMC first before going to Apple store (connect the power adapter to the computer, then press once left side shift - control - option and power button, this should reset the smc).
If after PRAM reset there was no boot chime, this could mean that the computer cant start up, try with SMC, then I guess you will have to go to Apple Store for repairs, could be RAM problems.

Boot Camp just isn't working.

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro i7 running Mountain Lion. Love it.
I recently decided to upgrade to a SSD, so my regular drive with boot camp installed is no longer in my machine. In my optical drive bay I have placed a secondary hard drive and removed my SuperDrive.
Before I installed my SSD, boot camp was working just fine. I was able to boot into Windows and play all my games on Steam without any issues.
I thought, "Now that I have an SSD, I can install Boot Camp onto my secondary internal drive and leave my primary drive free!" My secondary drive is ideal for this with all the additional space."
After I installed my SSD, I cannot get Boot Camp to install. AT ALL. Here's all I've tried:
Boot Camp Assistant - Created a USB Bootable thumb drive to boot from my legitimate copy of Windows 7. Had to do some tweaking (like this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z1gqw0ougo).
When Boot Camp Assistant rebooted my machine to install Windows from the thumb drive, I got this error - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgWBY6IezQA - He recommended creating bootable thumb drives on different thumb drives if you get that error.
I tried SIX different thumb drives. All different brands all across the board. Even a Generic USB thumb drive didn't work.
I tried using the Windows 7 DVD to USB installer from Microsoft on one of my older machines onto these thumb drives. Didn't work.
I even tried 3rd party bootable thumb drive creators. Didn't work.
After that I used a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to try and boot from the CD. The disc will show up on Mac's boot menu just fine (unlike the Windows 7 thumb drive), but after I attempt to run the Windows installer it'll just sit there and have a blank screen with a cursor.
I tried making USB external hard drives bootable for Windows install. Nothing.
I then thought, "Maybe it's because I'm trying to install this thing on a secondary internal drive and Apple doesn't like that for some reason." So I cleared up some space on my primary drive and attempted the install. Didn't work.
I Googled around as much as I could; I found some tricks and hacks that could move over a VMware Fusion install into a boot camp partition. Didn't work.
I did a "Disk Utility Restore" of from my previous installation of boot camp to my newly created Boot Camp partition. It "almost" worked. It shows up on my Mac's boot menu but when I try to boot into it, it just shows a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
I remembered that my previous install of Boot Camp would hang at that blank cursor screen for a few minutes. So I decided to let it have a lot of time and went to bed. The next day, several hours later, it was still on the blank cursor screen.
I searched around and apparently Windows 7 can have some screwed up boot files. I came across this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR67i5iovoI - which makes sense, but I can't even get Windows 7 boot camp to load in my VMware fusion to fix it! It'll also show a blank screen with a cursor!
So there you have it. I would really prefer to have a working native Windows 7 install because I do quite a bit of gaming and... well, gaming isn't very prominent on the Mac just yet, although it is getting better.
I'm going to attempt to do another Disk Utility Restore (they take about two hours...). I'm pretty sure it won't work.
Anyone out there have any suggestions? I've spent way too much time on this, haha.

After trying all of the above and finding a random thread out there, I went ahead and put my SuperDrive back in and placed my secondary drive as the primary and was able to install Windows 7 without a hitch.
So I guess that "solved" my problem. I popped my secondary drive (with Bootcamp) back into place and put my SSD as the primary again, and I was able to boot into Windows.
Stinks that I had to do ALL OF THAT and trick my MB Pro like that.
But hey, it's working. Hooray.

How to disable boot chime in Yosemite?

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to disable the boot chime in Yosemite. Previously I was able to do this by way of a terminal command (sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80) but this doesn't seem to work in Yosemite.
I know why the boot chime is useful and why I should just mute my speakers before shutting down, but I just want it disabled once and for all.
Besides the use of 3rd party apps, is there any way to disable it?

I had this scrapped from someone else's post.
Basically what it does is when you log off, it mutes the volume. On log-on, it un-mutes so your normal volume returns.
-Create scriptfile for muting:
sudo nano /opt/local/bin/mute-on.sh
#!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume with output muted'
-Create scriptfile for unmuting
sudo nano /opt/local/bin/mute-off.sh
#!/bin/bash
osascript -e ‘set volume without output muted’
-Make both files executable:
sudo chmod +x /opt/local/bin/mute-*
-Check if any hooks already exist (these will be overwritten, so make sure it is OK for you)
sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook
-Add hooks for muting
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook /opt/local/bin/mute-on.sh
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook /opt/local/bin/mute-off.sh
–to delete the hooks, use the following:
sudo defaults delete com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
sudo defaults delete com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook
-Note that script files must be owned by root.
I wish Apple starts rethinking these unneeded clutters that really annoys new mac users.

KT3 dual video no boot

For no good reason I spent some time this morning trying to get a second monitor working on my main development system. I have a perfectly good Matrox Millenium PCI card, with the VGA disabled, that ought to work fine as the secondary display in a system with an AGP primary display. But, in fact, as soon as I put in the secondary card, the boot sequence hangs right after displaying the list of devices in the box. This is before Win2K even gets started, so it's got to be a hardware issue of some sort. I had thought maybe it depended on whether the card was on the primary or secondary PCI bus, but I tried both, and messed around with BIOS settings, to no avail.
Note that this isn't the "no video, just beeps" issue - the primary (AGP) card does initialize and show the boot sequence output, it just goes off into never-never land.

High pitched boot chime?

Though this is no functional issue, I am wondering why the boot chime with my new MP is much higher pitched than my former iMac's and in fact clanky? It has nothing from the solid bass sound that characterized earlier top of the line Mac models. Is there such a low scale internal loudspeaker installed that cannot produce a serious chime?

Just yesterday I posted a similar complaint about my internal loudspeaker. Maybe it is a cheap speaker that's at fault.

Boot chimes sound but the screen stays dark - why?

Our iBook (16 VRAM) 700 has appeared to die. The normal boot chimes sound when the power switch is pressed (but only after a forced quit) but the screen stays dark and no hard drive activity can be heard.
Is this probably the "dreaded logic board video chip problem" I have read about in several places?
If so how do I rescue important files (like my wife's novel)!!! Strip the computer down and pull the hard drive? It was running Panther so there is no Time Machine backup.

Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode? (This probably won't work, but it's worth a try.)
After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

No boot chime

for some reason, my PowerMac G4 won't chime whenever i boot to Mac OS X. However, it would chime if i boot from Mac OS 9.2
this particular PowerMac has the latest firmware update, which is 4.2.8.

The Audio works FINE. In fact, the Cube is working flawlessly....minus the loud chime on startup. I'm extremely IRKED because I haven't been able to figure it out. I know a lot of folks don't like the chime and prefer to have it muted, but I WANT my chime loud & proud on startup. My boot chime is very much muted: I CAN hear it, but it's barely detectable. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can re-establish the LOUD boot chime....? HELP......

IBook G4: no video on boot... not the typical iBook issue

I just received an iBook G4 1.2Ghz that is broken. It powers on just fine, but no video comes up. I removed the 512MB stick it came with to see if that was the problem, to no avail. Then I connected the iBook to an external monitor, with no video on boot as well. But other than the lack of video, the iBook seems fine. No loud fans (widespread issue on the G4s) or noises from a dying HDD, etc. I can hear the hard drive spin up, but it doesn't sound like it's loading anything, so my guess is that it's actually not booting.
But it gets even stranger. I can't even shut the laptop down by holding the power button (last resort type thing). I held it for a solid 20 seconds before I gave up and removed the battery. To me, it seems like this is a logic board problem, but I could be wrong. Anyone have any insight into this? I had an iBook that had video problems based on a weak GPU connection to the logic board, but this is different.

You wouldn't happen to know if Apple still has their iBook G4 repair program going, do you? By the looks of the support website it doesn't look like it, but I thought I'd ask.
In a bit of curiosity, I decided to try the "C-clamp" fix for the iBook. Amazingly, my iBook booted properly only to have it lock up again and see the screen change to colored vertical lines after 20 seconds. Like I said in my last post, I had another iBook that had a graphics chip problem and sometimes experienced similar issues. So now I think my iBook has more than one of the common iBook G4 logic board problems. The black screen/fans one is described here:

I tried to shim that specific chip as stated per the instructions, but it didn't work. I also did the same thing to this iBook, that fixed my older G4... shim the graphics chip. But, unfortunately, I still don't have a working iBook as of now, despite the shim. I thought I made progress when I started getting the fan on every boot (there was no noise +at all+ before), but that has since gone away and I'm back where I started. I'll keep trying different things to fix the iBook, but it think a logic board replacement is going to happen sometime in the near future. Anyone know where to find them besides eBay?

fellow who called me back from Bombay. Surprisingly he was looking forward
to Thanksgiving too but probably because he gets a day off.
I now have the Adobe Premiere Pro loaded (it took nine hours) and
installed. Now I'm starting the tutorials.

When I turn on my iPhone 4S the apple logo pops up for a split second then the screen goes black but the phone itselfs boots up just fine???

I tried replacing the screen with no luck. The same thing happened with the new screen. I replaced the backlight coil and the backlight ic and still have the issue. I don't know what else could be the problem. If the battery is completely dead and I plug it in the "charging battery" symbol shows just fine during the entire time it is charging, but as soon as it starts to boot up the apple logo shows for a split second then the screen goes black. The rest of the phone still boots up just fine. I can use SIRI, press the lock button like I'm about to use my phone and slide my thumb across where the "slide to unlock" would normally be and it will make the unlock noise just no picture display. I am pretty tech savvy when it comes to repairs and all of the connections look fine, replaced backlight coil and ic, replaced LCD/digitizer, tried a restore, tried a DFU restore, multiple hard resets, but I am at a loss as to where to go from here. I had dropped the phone and put a minor crack in the screen but the phone worked just fine for a couple months after before this started to happen. The phone is still under apple warranty but apple won't cover it because Apple is stating that it is "caused by the crack in the screen." But being a repair technician I know that is not the case... Good one apple. So I took it upon myself to try to determine the REAL problem. Anyone with a little more knowledge have any ideas? Any suggestions are appreciated!!

Yes, I understand that. But The screen issue is not a result of user damage. The phone was not dropped when the screen got cracked. My daughter was standing in a chair at the table and dropped one of her toys onto the bottom of the phone and cracked it right by the home button. (Nowhere near the LCD/digitizer flex cables, connections, or logic board components) then a few months later my phone had died, I plugged it in, it showed it was charging, then Apple logo disappeared and screen didn't work. AFTER contacting Apple about the issue and them telling me that it "is a result of the very minimal crack to the sheet of glass that has no relation to the LCD or Digitizer and that the warranty does not cover it I had taken it upon myself to change the LCD/digitizer to no avail, as well as backlight ic and backlight coil to no avail. But how do I go about letting Apple know that it is in fact NOT due to the cracked screen nor is it due to the flex cable connections? I can't. So the lady that works the call center phones trying to "convince" me that she knows what she is talking about and "convince" me that it is from the cracked screen I have to take her word because I can't show Apple that its not because of that without paying them $199 to fix the screen in which case they will just send me a new phone rather than fix the faulty hardware under warranty.
