    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Wanting to run CATIA v5 on Mac Mini (late 2012)

Hi so I'm new to Mac but I love my Mac Mini. I'm an engineering student at my university and they are offer a free student edition of CATIA v5 if you are enrolled to the College of Engineering. I found out that it only runs on Windows OS but then found out about this Boot Camping thing. Looks relatively straight forward from reading through the instructions on Apple's site and on my Mac. I will need to put on Windows 7 64-bit to run CATIA as Windows 8 & 8.1 are not compatible. I've seen a software called Parallels at Best Buy and read about it too here in the forums.
First I was wanting to know if anyone knows which would be easier (Boot Camp/Parallels) and run more efficiently for the type of software I am wanting to run in CATIA v5.
Secondly I was wanting to know if anyone has tried to use CATIA v5 on their Mac's and what troubles they have ran into or any pointers they might have.
    My Mac Mini's Specs:
    2.6GHz i7
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3
    Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024
    1 TB SATA hard drive
    I appreciate all input!

No idea if Windows will do it, but you can run Windows without Bootcamp & have OSX available at the same time, which should give you all the Monitors that OSX uses.

  • Internet runs slow on my Mac mini

My internet runs slow on my Mac mini after I loded the new OS

I sopped by the apple store with my Mac book air.  It worked well.   I took it home still same problem I have two wireless networks Uverse and AirPort Extreme.  My iMac was connected to the Uverse and the MacBook Air and Mac mini was connected to the Airport. When I connect all three to the Uverse everything works well. When I connect any one to the AirPort it is very slow. It worked fine with the old OS but not with the new OS. Is look like problem is with the AirPort Extreme and the new OS.

  • Should I replace failed hard drive in imac 4,1 or run from external or mac mini?

My hard drive failed in my iMac 4,1 (early 2006 intel). I am running from an external drive, but slow. Should I replace the hard drive ($300 at Apple), purchase a better external to run from or a mac mini? I'm trying to determine if it makes sense to invest further in this iMac since its 5 yrs old already. Can any one offer some insight/opinion?

    Hi moreenie
Your profile does not indicate your geographic location, but there are Authorize Apple Service Providers that can and will do the work for considerably less than your local Apple Store.
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Call around, at less than $200 to replace the Hard Drive, it makes a little more sense to fix and use it for another year or two...
I replace the Hard Drive in my Early 2006 a couple of years ago not because it died, but because it became to small.
Sorry I can't honestly help you decide, because I'm torn and can't decide for myself. Not liking the Glossy iMac's, I've also been toying with the idea of either a Mac-Mini or used Mac Pro? My biggest problem with the Mac-Mini is, that by the time you do a few upgrades it cost as much as a base iMac.

  • I want to buy new model of mac mini

I was hoping that the delay is because of a redesign like they did with the mac pro, I have some ideas about it like mac pro mini or mac mini pro, who knows what they will call it.... Intel iris pro graphics would be nice but a nvidia 780m graphics chip would be better..... It should have thunderbolt 2 also....... I have an old six year old macbook whith os mavericks and want to upgrade to a new mac mini whenever they release it this year or next..... I do have one question about audio.  My macbook is only cabable of 96khz and 24 bit audio through the optical out and audio in but would like to use 192 khz and 24 bit audio for recording vinyl masters and for external microphone recordings.  Does the current mac mini do this?

Late 2012 Mini (the current one)
    Audio in/optical audio in port
The Audio In port accommodates both digital optical input and analog audio input.
Analog audio line input is accepted through a 3.5mm mini phone jack. The sound input port accepts line-level stereo signals up to 24-bit stereo 44.1-192kHz sampling rate. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.
Optical audio input is SPDIF format and uses a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter, accepting up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-96kHz sampling rate.
    Headphone out/optical audio out port
The headphone/line out port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output, use a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug. For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone or a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter

  • I have Aperture 2 in CD and want to install it in new mac mini

    Hi,
I have Aperture 2 in a CD which I installed in my old "white" mac book about 6 yeas ago.
I have now bought a new mac mini and I want to install Aperture again.  Of course the new mac mini does not have a CD port.
Question is: how can I download Aperture 2 from the Store so that I enter the software serial  number and buy the required upgrades on top of it.
    thanks
    ratoslibres

If it is new and is running Yosemite you cant run Aperture 2, it is not compatible and ill not run.
In addition Aperture 2 is not available anywhere as a download. If you what to run Aperture you will need to purchase Aperture 3 from the Mac App Store.

  • Running AppleWorks on new Mac Mini

Hi. I recently bought a new Mac Mini, only to learn that AppleWorks didn't ship with it because it has been discontinued. So, I was wondering if there's any way to get AppleWorks to run on Leopard. If there is, how would I go about obtaining a copy of AppleWorks that would work on it?
One more question. I used to use ClarisWorks and liked it a lot. I realize this may be a shot in the dark, but is there any way to find copies of ClarisWorks that would run on the latest operating system (on a Mac Mini) as well? Thanks for any info.
ETA: I do have an older Mac Mini as well from 2005. Would AppleWorks be installable from any of those older disks?
    Message was edited by: mitrailleuse

You won't be able to run any version of ClarisWorks or AppleWorks 5 on an Intel Mac or any Mac running Leopard because you would need Classic & neither Intel Macs or Leopard support Classic.
The AppleWorks included with the G4 Mac mini would be AppleWorks 6.2.9. That could be a problem if you have any ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files you want to open. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 can open these files but 6.2.9 will give an I/O error when you try to open about half of them. The rest will open without problems. There is no predicting which will open & which won't. If you run into this problem, you might consider getting a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4 which will run very well on your new Mac mini & won't have problems with those files.

  • IMovie won't run on brand new Mac Mini (Quartz Extreme message)

I just bought a new Mac Mini. The latest 2010 Mac Mini.
    I have a Samsung 23" LCD monitor.
I tried to open iMovie, and got the following message:
iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.
I'm new to the Mac world. Shouldn't Mac software run on Mac hardware?
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hello All,
I'm actually on my second Mac mini in a month (I returned the first one) with the same problem. I didn't have Perian installed, and certainly not Windows Media. I also have the problem that when I turn the computer on, it freezes on the Apple logo and the spinning gear stops turning. I have to shut down, then when I turn computer back on, it goes directly to the log in window. It will work fine from there. And most times, iMovie will start no problem. I hope that I don't have to return this one as well, but I might have to.

  • WiFi slow when running Windows 7 on Mac Mini (2011)

    Hi,
I have just bought a Mac Mini (2011) and used Boot Camp for installing Windows 7 as well. However I am experiencing some problems with the WiFi when running Windows. The speed is less than 10% of what it should be. I have tried connecting a network cable and then everything is running fine. When booting into OS X Lion there are no problems with running WiFi. I have tried to rightclick on the network adapter and select update drivers but it says that the driver installed is up to date.
    Any ideas?

Apparently it was a router issue. When I connected my old Cisco router as an extended access point both the Mac OS and Windows session connected as supposed to. I made a factory reset of the router provided by my ISP, configured it again and the problem apparently seemed to be solved.
However overnight the problem occured again - I swithed the router off and on again and was able to connect. I noticed in the DHCP log that when running Mac OS the computername "My-Mac-Mini" is sent to the router with the MAC address of the network card - when running Windows it is the machine name I entered during the Windows installation. Not sure if that is confusing the router from my ISP but after I changed the computername in Mac OS the connection seems stable.

  • Help: do i really want an Apple TV or a Mac Mini?

    Hi,
I have an iMac and Airport Extreme base station upstairs in the den. Downstairs in the rec room I have a 46" LCD HDTV.
    I'd like three things.
    1. I'd like to rent movies from iTMS (can't in Canada); and buy/rent American TV shows from iTMS (can't in Canada)
    2. I'd like to be able to watch video files in the rec room that are on my iMac. (Currently I burn them to a DVD and watch them on my DIVX-capable DVD player, but the image quality ain't great.)
    3. I'd like to be able to browse the web from my rec room
Trying to decide if I want an Apple TV or something else (like a Mac Mini). Here's my thinking:
Apple TV, PROs: awesome interface, HDMI out, can stream video files from my iMac or a hard drive on my Airport Extreme base station.
Apple TV, CONs: no movie rentals in Canada yet, no American TV shows in iTunes store in Canada yet, have to convert DIVX files to Apple TV compatible format, cannot browse the web with it
Mac Mini, PROs: can use Front Row to watch video files, can use Safari to browse the web in my rec room
Mac Mini, CONs: more expensive, no HDTV and 5.1 audio out
    So my questions are:
Q1. is there any chance that Apple TV will provide me with access to the Safari web browser any time soon?
Q2. is the video output on a Mac Mini to my 46" LCD good enough; or is it crap compared to the HDMI out on Apple TV?
Q3. will iTunes store sell America TV shows in Canada soon?
Q4. will iTunes store rent movies in Canada soon?
Q5. will Apple TV support DIVX files soon?
Q6. if I buy an Apple TV will I regret getting the 40Gig version?
Q7. if I buy an Apple TV will I regret it because there's going to be a new PVR version of Apple TV next year?
ANY HELP OR OPINIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS,
    slegge

Here are my stabs at answers
    1) Probably not. This can be done but you'd have to hack it which isn't suggested.
    2) It's the same output. The only difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI carries audio as well. A mini outputting at 1920*1080 will look as good as an ATV outputting over HDMI.
    3 + 4) Who knows. My guess - unlikely.
    5) Not likely. You'll need to pick up something such as Visual Hub to convert files to ATV format. On the other hand, a mini can play these files already.
    6) That depends on how often your computer is on. In my case I own the 40 and don't mind it a bit - my mac mini is always on so it can stream anything from my mini to my Apple TV over my network. Streaming movies takes about five seconds to get started but after that I've had no trouble.
    7) That's a possibility given that they've submitted patents for an idea such as that - but remember many patents never turn into anything.
Basically I think the mini vs. Apple TV comes down to $$$ and how badly you want to rent HD movies. A mini (via Front Row) can do anything an Apple TV can do plus a whole lot more (play many more formats, higher resolutions, etc.). The only thing it can't do is rent HD movies. I would have sprung for another mini if I could have afforded it.

  • Running bootcamp on G4 Mac Mini

I'm trying to install bootcamp on my G4 mac mini, but when I go to applications/utilities there is no bootcamp setup assistant? Is it not possible to do this or something. And yes I have Leopard installed.

There are other options than Virtual PC to run Windows on your computer:
    IEmulater
    Q or QEMU
    Bochs
    Guest PC
    WinTel
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

What error indications do you get? You have to enable error logging in the Java Control Panel to see the details.

  • How to run external drives w/ mac mini

Hi, I recently bought a mac mini and I have two external hard drives hooked up to it. One for time machine and the other for photos.
When I looked up this topic and did a search I found conflicting answers but I know so little about this...maybe I just don't understand.
Here is the question: should I leave the external hard drives hooked up 24/7 even through restart etc... or am I supposed to unplug them? Unplugging seems like it defeats the purpose of time machine. On the other hand I don't want to ruin any equipment. What is the standard practice?
    Thanks.

I'll vouch for the 'get hot'. As in play a dvd for an hour and then take it out hot. Who needs a heater unit with multiple drives going?
I generally set the Time Machine to OFF and leave it there. Just before and after I add or subtract something significant, I hit Command key and the dock's Time Machine Icon together and choose the backup now function. Now I have a record of Before and After the event. (I also keep a physical log book of what events were changed day/time so if I need to turn the clock back to a specific event I know where to go rather than hunt and peck.)
ps. the less you let Time Machine make a backup any time IT feels like it, the longer your MB space will last.
Also, if you can keep your Time Machine backups and other storage saves to just before you are shutting down your system anyway, you can just turn off the drives after the computer is shut down. I learned to do this because my firewire Western Digital MY BOOK drive would only go to sleep mode otherwise even with the computer off.
