HT3986 Windows on MacBook with Parallels Desktop 7

I need to install Windows on a MacBook 13" 5.1 bought May 2009. Operating system Mac OS X 10.5.8. Processor 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory 2GB 1067 Mhz DDR3. What Windows software do I need to work with this laptop and Parallels Desktop 7?  Does in need to be 32 bit or 64 bit?
Wouls appreciate any guidance.

I think you would be able to work with either 32 or 64 bit windows, but you would need to double check with the Parallels support list.
If you do not already have Parallels, there is also VMware Fusion and VirtualBox (free from Oracle (formally Sun)).
I would suggest you think about adding more RAM, as running a VM can be very memory hungry.  RAM upgrades are not that expensive.  Check with Crucial.com and MacSales.com as respected Mac RAM vendors.

  • Will virtual XP mode work with Windows 7 installed with Parallels Desktop 5

I've just installed Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro with Parallels Desktop 5. I've installed the necessary software for virtual XP mode but can't get it to work.....like running a virtual mode within a virtual mode. Just wondering if anyone has been able to make this work. I've read it will work by installing Windows 7 through Bootcamp but it would be more convenient if I could get it to run through Parallels.
    Here's what I have:
    MacBook Pro 13"
    2.56GHz processor
    4G memory

I suggest you post your question on the Parallels forum, as it's their software you're having issues with and it is not related to Macs or any compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows, which is the focus of this forum:

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

And maybe with some hacks or updates to Parallels 6...

  • A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
    1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
    2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
    3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?
    Thanks
    Keith

    1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
    2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
    3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.
    Good Luck

  • Are there any known issues upgrading to 10.8.3 from 10.7.5 with Parallels Desktop already installed in 10.7.5?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Most of the applications compatible with Lion are also compatible with Mountain Lion, so you shouldn't have any problem. Mountain Lion supports the latest update for Parallels 7 and 8, so if you haven't got one of these versions, you should upgrade it before upgrading Mac OS X. That application uses extensions, so it may cause kernel panics

  • Windows XP Professional using AirPort in MacBook through Parallels Desktop

I'm trying to convince my wife to buy her first Mac computer, but she needs to use one particular Windows application (health-related hospital work) that exchanges data over the internet, so the apparent solution would be to also buy Parallels Desktop. My question is: Will Windows XP Professional running in Parallels Desktop be able to access the internet through a wireless network by using the AirPort card in a MacBook? Please answer to: [email protected] (thanks).

I will answer here, as it helps everyone.
I can say that parallels works great wirelessly.
My wife is going back for her Masters, and one of her classes had a windows only app.
loaded in parallels, and all worked great.
I would recommend installing 2 gigs of ram though. (running both OS's + apps does need the additional memory.
(ps - I am using a Linksys router)

  • Open an opened PDF in OS X Preview with a Windows 7 Adobe reader or other  (running with Parallels Desktop)

    Hi guys,
I just want a simple way to open a PDF that is already opened in OS X Preview with an application in my Windows 7 (running on Parallels 9).
I think it's possible with "Services" menu, but how??
I just want to do this with Word, Excel and Powerpoint files there are opened in Mac OS X and I want to open them in Parallels' Windows 7.
I know you probably think "Why using a windows app????", I agree with you but my laser printer doesn't work with Mac OS X (I hate Develop ineo 164 ..).
    Can you help me please?
    Thank you
    Carmelo

    Mike,
Thanks for the reply. Are you talking about 128-bit AES and the like? If that's the case, it changes depending on the type of file I choose (3.0 PDF is 40-bit RC4, 5.0 PDF is 128-bit RC4 and so forth).
I don't see any other options for encoding available. Could you be more specific? Sorry. I'm a relatively new Adobe Pro user.
    Thanks again.

  • Run Windows via BootCamp or Parallels Desktop?

I recently picked up a mid-2011 11" MacBook Air (2GB RAM, 64GB storage) and am wondering it it is possible to run Windows on this configuration via either BootCamp or Parallels Desktop?

If Ross-Tech is only vendor, answer is a yes, but with caveats.
Will there be a Mac or Linux version?
There will be no "native" Mac or Linux versions.  The time and effort required to "port" VCDS to these platforms would never be worthwhile.     VCDS works fine on Apple Mac computers that have Intel processors (all modern Macs) when Windows is installed on them using Boot Camp.    Most computers that are used to run Linux can also boot Windows.     If you do not wish to install Windows, we now offer a platform-independent version of VCDS called "VCDS-Mobile".
PS there is a mobile version found it via

  • How to change 'always open with' file settings with parallels desktop 4?

    Hi all.
here's my problem; parallels desktop 4 has hijacked file association on some of my file types and wont let me change them back to their mac equivilants
Accidentally clicking on one of these parallels associated apps causes the virtual machine to boot up, slowing my pc down dramatically and causing me grief.
Setting certain files to 'always open with' the equivilant mac app [eg. trying to get text documents to open with textedit as oppose to xp's notepad, hasn'thelped]
    any suggestions ? - i am stumped
    Thanks!

Delete Windows Applications folder in Virtual Machine folder (it's from Mac Side); disable Shared Applications from Configuration Editor.
    ---or---
...other permanent solution to try on Mac side
1 select a file in your finder (e.g. .doc)
    2 press <cmd>
3 go to 'open with' option...
4 select the correct application (e.g. Microsoft Word)
    5 click 'change all' - done...go try
When Microsoft Word is already selected, change that to another app, click 'change all', then set it back to Microsoft Word again and once more click 'change all'.
If still no joy, try strong language....

  • Mac Safari fights with Parallels Desktop

When I have Safari running, and then launch Windows via Parallels Desktop, everything slows to a crawl.
If I quit either Safari or Parallels Desktop, everything goes back to full speed.
It seems like some kind of degeneration. I had this problem a while back. I created a new user account on my Mac and started using that and voila, Safari and Parallels  worked fine together again. But over time the problem has crept into my new account.
Has anybody seen this before? Any ideas?

I've got 4gb of RAM and only 1gb allocated to the VM.
However, while trying to solve another problem, this seems to have got fixed as well. I had a problem with Safari not displaying pages correctly, posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18388014#18388014
Anyway, my Parallels problem has gone away. Go figure.
