HT4007 Where are the cache files or temporary files stored?

I was rendering a slideshow of 253 pictures (approximately 4MB each) and I watched the available drive space on my MacBook Pro go from 23 GB available right down to zero.  The rendering did not finish and an error message came on the screen to let me know.  When I first clicked 'Export', I chose to save the finished slideshow to an external drive formatted for MacOS.  I also chose to save it as 1080p QuickTime .mov file.
This is my first time using Aperture and am puzzled as to why it used up that much drive space in my MacBook Pro.  I thought that it was hanging on to some unfinished render files so I quit Aperture and restarted my MacBook Pro but now I only see that I regained about 2 GB out of my original 23GB.
Is it correct for me to assume that there are cache files or temporary files still present somewhere?  If so, please tell me where so I can delete them and restore my available internal drive space on my MacBook Pro to 23 GB again.
Why did it use up so much of my internal drive space when I actually told Aperture to save the finished slideshow file to an external drive?
Please help.  Thanks.

Aperture has two cache directories that uses regularly
In your user library: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Aperture/
At System Level: There are temporary file written to a hidden area, that you can open from the Terminal by referring the system varaiable $TMPDIR.
Open a Terminal window and enter the following command:
         open $TMPDIR
This will open a terminal Window showin this hidden cache. I found the partially rendered movies in a subfolder called something like "TemporaryItems"
Why did it use up so much of my internal drive space when I actually told Aperture to save the finished slideshow file to an external drive?
The final movie will be saved to the destination you named, but Aperture needs working space for partial renderings and as much RAM as it can get. The OS will swap other applications to a swapping area of the ystem drive to free RAM for Aperture.
Another problem could be that the destination drive you want to write to temporarily went offline. Then aperture will write to $TMPDIR instead. Check the permissions on your external volume and the connection. Is it a Network volume? This is risky, of you need a stable connection for a long render time. In that case connect the external volume directly.

  • Where Are The Master Files Stored For iWeb?

I can't seem to figure out where the master files are stored in iWeb. For example I was trying to help of friend with his iWeb website, so I told him to send the files - and then I was planning to load them into iWeb on my computer... but I couldn't figure out where to put them... and he did not know where they were either!

  • What folder are the cache files stored? In the previous version I could look at cached files but now no files are stored at that location.

I want to be able to retreave cached files while running firefox as I could in the last version

You can find out where the file is through '''about:cache'''
but that would be a major hassle finding your files, you want to install
    :CacheViewer '''0.7b''' -- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/cacheviewer/
It is not marked as compatible but get the latest development version 0.7b, read the Developer Notes for the extension. It works. You may have to override compatibility.

  • In Mountain Lion - where are the calendar files stored?

My wife synced her calendars with icloud and google calendar and wiped out her events. I have backups on a HD and Time Machine but I do not know where the calendar files are stored in ML.
I previous OS's I would look in Application Support but that does not seem to work in ML.
Where can I find these calendar files stored.
    Thank you

They are in ~/Library/Calendars, where the '~' represents the user's home folder. The problem is that that Library folder is invisible now. You can easily access it by holding down the option key and choosing Library from the Finder's Go menu.

  • Where are the calander files stored

I need to restore one or more Thunderbird calender files from my Windows back up. When in Thunderbird, click on properties for any calendar it states the location as
    moz-storage-calendar://
This tells me nothing. Exactly where IS moz-storage-calendar://
I have no idea where that is nor what the file names are. Where on earth are these calendar files located? I can not find them.

It does not matter: but Windows 7 does an automatic backup (back up and restore) and the backups are stored on an external hard drive. So that back up has the calender files since Thunderbird is part of the backup. All I need to know is where Thunderbird stores the calendar files. Both the backup and Thunderbird will store the calendar files in the same path name.

  • Where are the data files stored?

I regularly back up using Time Machine, but when I reformatted my hard drive and then restored it, I could not find the data files for iWeb websites I have created.  Looking for help, I saw a reference to a subdirectory named "Domain", I found that but could not see any files for the four different websites I have created.  Are these data files kept hidden?  I am not very familiar with MAC file systems, so please respond in a MAC for Dummies language.  Thanks.

In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.  Then it will be easy to fine the domain file in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Where are the memory files located?

I backed up all my premiere pro cs4 files when reinstalling my operating system and now can't get the program to run exactly as before.  Other than my documents, where else are the memory files stored?

If you mean documents and settings/adobe/premiere pro/4.0  ..those files are written when the program installs onto your computer. They are related to installation of other things in your registry of the Operating system...
Basically you are looking at having to re-install your premiere program, but first I would delete those files that you stuck in there...
What you tried to do can't be done, is the bottom line...

  • Where are the audio files located?

You know how when your video source is missing, it shows that ! with a yellow triangle around it? Then, when you hover over the !, it shows you where iMovie expected to find the video, and then you can just move the video there and it's fixed. But for audio, it doesn't show you where it is supposed to be located when you hover over the ! in the audio file (music green bar).
So, where are the music files supposed to be located so that it can find them?
    Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, iMovie simply links to the music file from wherever it is located in your system. That could be the iTunes Library, your Desktop, an external drive, or other places. So if you move the music to a different location, I assume that iMovie will lose track of it. iMovie doesn't actually import the music to the project - it's just referencing it (as far as I'm aware).
If you know the name of the track (or tracks, or artists), try doing a search both within iTunes and on your hard drive using Spotlight. If found, the best solution is probably to drag it again into your project, then do the necessary edits if applicable.
Note that, in iMovie the music tracks are identified by song name - it's shown at the beginning of the green audio bar. So the songs shouldn't be too difficult to track down. It's just a pain having to re-instate them.
