  • HT5620 Forgot My Security Questions - Can't Set Up Rescue Email

I forgot my security questions but never set up a rescue email because it was a while back. It says I need to answer my security questions to create one, therefore it contradicts my problem! Any help??

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

If you've never set them then are you able to log into your account via the 'manage your Apple ID' button/link on http://appleid.apple.com, click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of the page that you are taken to, and can you then set them on the right-hand side of that screen ?
If not then is there a reset link beneath the two questions that show on that screen ? The link will only show if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset.

  • OS X is asking the answer to a security question I never authorized. I don't know the answer. What do I do?

The Three Best Alternatives for Security Questions and Rescue Mail
        1. Use Apple's Express Lane.
Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the
bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then
'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Forgotten Apple
ID security questions' and click 'Continue'. Please be patient waiting for the return
phone call. It will come in time depending on how heavily the servers are being hit.
         2.  Call Apple Support in your country: Customer Service: Contact Apple support.
         3.  Rescue email address and how to reset Apple ID security questions.
A substitute for using the security questions is to use 2-step verification:

If this was purchased many months ago it may be because Apple changed its security set-up about six months ago at a rough guess. Go to and complete the questions posed at:

  • Appleid, recovery email address and security questions were hacked.

My son's recovery email address and security questions were hacked.  How can we get these changed so he can purchase more apps?  Currently he is being asked to answer security questions that do no pertain to him (like what were you doing on such and such date - he wasn't even born yet).  The email address in the recovery section is r********@answers.com.  We don't know who this is, but it appears they have hacked his account.  He has an itunes balance and I don't want him to lose it.

You or your son will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

Unfortunately the solution Katie_Bug_88 proposed did not work for me, possibly due to the age of my Imac and its operating system.
However, Diane from the Itunes Store did suggest a solution which has worked, and I give it below for the benefit of others with the same problem. ( With her permission )
    1. Open Safari
    2. At the top menu click on the 'Safari' drop down..
    3. Click on "Reset Safari .."
    4. A Box appears which asks "Are you sure you wish to reset Safari?"
    - Make sure all the boxes are checked, and then click "Reset" at the bottom.
    5. Safari will re-open, Instead of letting it re-open, quit Safari.
    6. After a few moments, try re-opening iTunes  - when the Security "Challenge Questions" re-appear, choose the ones you want to be asked, and answer them, then submit them.  You should be able to do so now.
Thanks to Katie_Bug for trying, hope this is of use to others.

That's because you never registered a rescue email address. The only way to resolve this now is to contact iTunes Support. They are the only ones that can help.

Another user had success doing the following:
I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
"done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!
