HT4041 Why should or shouldn't I upgrade to Lion?

I guess I don't understand what is so important about getting Lion if my computer is working fine on Snow Leopard.  Everyone is having so many problems with Lion.  Why should I upgrade or not upgrade?  I'm afraid my computer will crash or slow down, etc.  I have an older Macbook, 2008.  I could upgrade but I'm doubtful of the necessity.  I don't do any web work, meaning publishing to the web or sharing documents.  I basically use it for writing (I have a novel writing software program) or internet stuff and that's it.  I'm not a genius as far as all the issues mentioned, so that's why I'm asking.  Thanks!!!

Yea, it's Apple tying all that together, so you buy a iPhone or iPad then your going to want everything synced on your computer, so you buy a Mac.
It's a trap really, locking one into Apple's universe so they can inflict bloated OS X upgrades like Lion on older hardware and force a premature hardware upgrade. Don't upgrade hardware then they deny services like MobileMe etc like they are doing to 10.6 and earlier users.
I don't advise Lion for any Mac that originally came with 10.5.  Originally 10.6 sure, not 10.5, it's because the hardware is slightly dated and Lion is going to do a dam fine job of crippling it and also make all your PPC 10.5 software no longer work.
So Lion is a lose lose for most 10.5 machines, plus it's depressing and strange, everything is wrong about the UI. Reverse scrolling, no "Save As" AutoSave is annoying as heck, no Spaces or Exposé, the programs reload upon restart so your boot time is totally crippled. etc.
Lion is Mr. Hyde to Snow Leopard's Dr. Jekyll.
BTW who need iWork when LibreOffice, a free Office like clone, is totally free and cross platform, Linux, Windows and OS X?
They do ask for donations and you should do so. Apple has enough money and they make it from hardware/iPhones, not software all that much.

  • Why won't kodak5210 scan after upgrading to lion

i have upgraded to lion noe my kodak 5210 won't scan

Can you scan directly through Image Capture? Image Capture should be in your Applications folder. It is possible that some of the scanning software that came with your device is not compatible with Lion (PowerPC code) but ImageCapture might work if that's the case.
If that doesn't work, try removing it and reinstalling.

  • HT5444 I am at 10.7.5 on a 2009 Macbook Pro.  Why should I upgrade to Mountain Lion

I am at 10.7.5 on a 2009 Macbook Pro.  Why should I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

In ways, Mountain Lion is a more efficient operating system than Lion, however, if you are happy with Lion and it meets all of your needs, there is o reason to change.  You can easily enough compare the features of the two and see if you are missing something that is important to you.  And then decide if you want to change.

  • Why should we upgrade

Why should we upgrade to windows server 2008 from windows server 2003 can we get some help on this  ?

Microsoft support for Windows Server 2003 ends July 2015 (next year)
    http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3198
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/server-cloud/archive/2014/06/27/learning-from-cloud-what-are-your-windows-server-2003-migration-options.aspx
After that time, no updates, patches, security updates will be available, and, Microsoft will not offer any kind of support services for it at all.
At this point in the lifecycle, it would make much more sense not to upgrade to WS2008 (it is also not really very new).
Suggest you consider WS2012R2, or, consider if you really need a server at all, given the many options now available for hosted services, cloud, etc.

  • Very disappointed in 4G since 7.1 upgrade.  Why should I upgrade when my contract is up.  Looks like 5G has same WIFI problems.

Very disappointed in 4G iphone since 7.1 upgrade.  Why should I buy 5g or later iphone when it appears they have the same WIFI problems when upgraded?

try resetting.  settings, general, reset. I would try reset network settings first. if not successful then try reset all settings.
I'm using a IPhone 5 and like it very much since Sprint has been updating their network. The upgrade made a big difference even in the battery life.
    good luck

  • Why should my clients who use contribute 3 suffer because I upgrade from cs3 to cs4?

I developed a template that can be used by a number of chapters of a charitable organization. The chapters who subscribe to my template all purchased contribute cs3 and it works well for them.  I may have made the mistake of buying the CS4 upgrade, as any new keys that I send using Dreamweaver cs4 to new users can not be used by users with contribute cs3. Most of these chapter already using contribute 3, do not have the funds to upgrade to contribute 4.
The code of my template has not changed, only the tool that I use to administer it has, why should they have to upgrade because I have?
This also makes it so that older users of my template will not be able to beneifit from the new version of the template. Do I have to reinstall CS3 and keep using CS3 to administer their network or do I have to force them to purchase the upgrade because I chose to upgrade to Dreamweaver CS4? There had to be a way I can send a contribute 3 user a new key because the user has changed names without forcing them to upgrade. Otherwise I have to develop my template so that changes can be made by users using other wisiwig programs.

    Thanks for that.
Yes I had the notion I may have been duped into buying a counterfeit CS3. I got it from Amazon and though Adobe seem to think that the serial number is OK they could not trace it on their system. However, if ths is a fake copy, what can Adobe do to help? How did they help you? I can't see them giving me a free CS3 in exchange - so I'm stuck!
    Kind regards
I had exactly the same problem and I am sorry to say that you may have a counterfeit version of CS3. Contact Adobe they helped me to sort out the problem.

  • WHY VERIZON TOOK AWAY A SECOND UPGRADE TO REPLACE A  BRAND NEW PHONE THAT WAS DEFECTIVE

I have had a cellular account for many years with Verizon. I currently have three (3) lines on my account. (removed), which is my phone, (removed), which is my husband’s phone, and (removed) which is my son’s phone.
I upgraded my phone to the Ipone 4 in 2012 under my son’s line (5841), so this line should be eligible for another upgrade this year.
In April 2014 I upgraded my husband’s phone under my line (9835). We originally upgraded to the Moto X, and I was charged the $35.00 upgrade fee. Unfortunately the Moto X had multiple issues and your tech support could not figure out how to fix the bugs so they replaced the first Moto X with a second one, that still had issues, so we were sent a third one, but Tech Support couldn’t get the phone activated. Since we went through three (3) Moto X’s and your Tech support admitted this phone is known for certain issues, a supervisor overrode the 14 day return rule and allowed us to choose a different phone for the upgrade. My husband wanted to go back to the Droid Maxx, which is what he originally had and loved. I had to pay $99.00 for this phone. The supervisor had to get my permission to extend my contract under this line (9835) an additional two (2) months since we were switching the original upgraded phone to a different one and I of course agreed, whats another two (2) months. I was not charged $35.00 a second time.
When I went on line to see when the (5253) line would be eligible for upgrade so I can upgrade my Iphone that is now two (2) years old and starting to have serious issues, I saw that this line is not eligible until August 2016, which means your company is claiming we already did an upgrade for 2014 which WE DID NOT.
On August 25, 2014 my husband called tech support about the Droid Maxx as it was having DATA issues, it would not send or receive pictures and kept saying Data Error. Tech Support did a hard reset, which did not fix the problem. It also stopped taking pictures and a few other problems with it so Tech Support sent us a new Droid Maxx under the manufacturer’s warranty since the phone is under one (1) year old. But Apparently whoever put in the order put it in as a upgrade happening on August 25, 2014. When I called to get this straightened out, I was advised that on May 20, 2014 we upgraded to the Droid Maxx so this line is not eligible for upgrade until May 2016. I tried to explain this was NOT an upgrade it was an override of the 14 day return rule to allow us to change the upgraded phone to the Droid Maxx since the original upgrade phone the Moto X had multiple issues that could not be fixed by your company. I am now being told that I autherized a second upgrade under the 5253 line for the Droid Maxx which is NOT TRUE. I would never have authorized an upgrade for a second line to replace a BRAND NEW PHONE that was an upgrade on the 9835 line. That makes no sense whatsoever. It was not our fault that the Moto X is a phone that has issues that is no fault of ours, so why should I be punished and have an upgrade taken away from me in order to replace a Brand New Phone that didn’t work?
I talked to customer service two days ago and promised a call back to resolve this in 24-48 hours, but I never got a call back.
I have been a loyal customer of Verizon since I have been out on my own. I had Verizon landline for many many years and went to Verizon Wireless when they became available. I have talked many many friends into switching to Verizon because their customer service has always been top notch and I always felt like this company cared about its customers. But to have this happen just has me speechless.
As I explained above, my phone needs replacing very soon as it is two (2) years old. I can’t get voice messages that are clear, it drops calls, even with full bars, it doesn’t ring half the time when someone calls me. I have been told on numerous occasions that someone has tried to call me but it went straight to voice mail, but my phone is always on, it showed no miss calls, nor did it ever ring so the calls aren’t even going through. It has had a hard reset a few times, but the issues are just getting worse. I am not going to upgrade under my son’s line 5841 in November because I am not going to extend his contract for two (2) more years. He has an old flip phone that is four (4) years old and if that phone goes up, how will he be be able to upgrade if I have to use his upgrade?
I am asking that you please look into this matter and correct this upgrade issue. The 5253 line should be eligible for an upgrade now, not in 2016.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter. If you need to contact me you can try calling my cell at (removed). (If the call will go through)
    Thank you
    (removed)
Looks like US Cellular has a promotion going on where they will buy out my contracts if I go with them.  Guess I will be leaving Verizon since they refuse to do the right thing.

shoostar, I'm sorry this had to occur on your new phone. In your post, I show you were heading back to the store to exchange your device. Please let us know if the store reps were able to resolve your issue or if they simply exchanged the phone. When a customer has an issue with an application, we always first recommend removing the application off the phone. If you are able to remove the app and still have issues or are not able to remove the app, the second suggestion is a master reset. I have listed both options below for your convenience.
Steps to remove an application below:
Note: Applications included with the Android Operating System may not have an uninstall option.
From the home screen, select the App menu.
    Select Settings.
If the application icon is missing, select App menu filter (located at the top) then select All apps.
    Select Applications.
    Select Manage applications.
From the All tab, select an application.
    Select Uninstall.
    Select OK.
    Select OK.
Steps below to perform Hard/Master Reset:
Note: Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.
From the home screen, select the App menu.
    Select Settings.
If the application icon is missing, select App menu filter (located at the top) then select All apps.
    Select Privacy.
From the Personal data section, select Factory Data Reset.
    Select Reset phone.
If presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.
    Select Erase Everything.
Allow up to 3 minutes for the factory data reset and reboot processes to complete, then perform initial activation and setup.

  • Why should we queue?

    Hello Architects and Software enginners,
I think things that may be needed in a specific scenario, may not be crucial in another scenario, in other words I don't believe a common solution exists for all situations.
So here is my scenario and my question is do I need to use the queing mechanism in this case? We have an Oracle EBS 11.5.10 with DB 10.2.0.1 system.
We have to exchange cXML documents with a vendor. For outbound, we need to transform table data to a cXML document and send it to the vendor via https. For inbound, we need to get cXML docs from the vendor via https and create a flat file in our system to load to our EBS interface tables. All this will be done in bacth/asynchronous mode.
For outbound, the data is already in the EBS tables. Why can't I loop through to get the records, create the cXML documents (say using XML DB) and use utl_http to post to the vendor on the fly per schedule say 10 times a day? Another option would be when the records are created I can create the cXML and store in a temporary table as a clob and then post to vendor as per schedule. Why do I need to use queing, because queuing seems to do the same thing-store in a queue table, dequeue it from there and and process it?
Similarly for inbound why can't I get the cXML from the vendor, store it in a temp table as a clob and extract the text and create my file? Why should I use queueing? It just seems to be additional processing.
As you can see it is a very basic question so let the opinions, ideas, critiques, disagreements flow :-)
I highly appreciate your input as it will help determine how we architect our solution.
    Thanks

    Hi Damorgan,
Appreciate it very much you taking the time to reply...on a weekend!. As a technologist I understand your point. But as business customers we have to look out for our best interests, so based on business realities I will disagree with some of your statements. I don't want to deviate from learning from you on the needs of AQ for this project. I wish we had met at the openworld so that we could have exchanged rants face to face, your EBS colleagues were targets of mine :-)
Now to your question. AQ is for real-time not batches. ...If you are going to batch it ... AQ is more technology than you need.
How is AQ real time? I am not trying to argue here, just trying to understand please bear with me and correct me if I am wrong. If you are queuing something, it means that you want to do something later, how many milliseconds afterwards that may be. I thought that was the whole point of queing so that users can continue doing what they are doing and leave the intensive processing to be done later without waiting online. Isn't this simply a batch that runs more often? A listener may be listening, wakes up every once in a while and processes the messages in batch-Again I don't know how this works but I am anticipating soemthing like this happens, please correct me. If there are disparate messages coming from many systems, queing makes sense in an EAI architecture. But in a point-to-point, as in this project, what is the point? :-)
Also, can I queue up cXML type of messages in clobs? I read somewhere that only native Oracle XML can be queued up in AQ. An example of cXML is below.
I would recommend that if your organization wishes to be competitive. And if you wish to have skills that are competitive in the marketplace you (your organization) start taking this technology seriously. Patch to 10.2.0.4 immediately and upgrade to 11.1.0.7 by August. Then throw away the antiquated batch mode model, use AQ, and communicate with your vendors in a more timely and efficient manner.
I would agree doing away with the batch if I understand AQ better. From what I read, I have explained my understanding of AQ earlier. We have had regular issues with EBS Workflow queueing mechanisms for e-mail notifications where things get piled up for no apparent reason and when we open an SR the inevitable result is "rebuild the queue, bounce Apache, bounce concurrent managers etc..." with no real resolution which is causing me to hesitate using AQ for financial documents.
Also, we will be upgrading to 11 soon but not soon enough for this project

    Hi experts,

what is the use of version?

    HI,
The classes of the SAP schema, the software components and their versions, and the software products and their versions are the basis for the component information
Product: Represents a collection of all versions of a product. A product is a unit that can be delivered, is visible to the customer, and that is installable and renewable. In an SAP environment, a product corresponds to an SAP technical component.
    ·        Product Version: Represents a particular version of a product.
    ·        Software Component: Represents a collection of all versions of a software component. Software components represent the reusable modules of a product. They can be upgraded or have patches installed.
    ·        Software Component Version: Represents a particular version of a software component.
    ·        Software Feature: Represents a particular aspect of the product functions. It is a logical link between Product Version and Software Component Version

  • Why can't Apple ever get upgrades right?

More a vent than anything else, but feel free to jump in.
I tried upgrading to iOS 5 tonight, and like every single other uprgade on every single apple device I own and there are a few, it fails.  It fails for some just plain stupid reasons that I as an old IT guy just don't understand.  To wit:
    - Why does the upgrade have to talk to an upgrade server to verify things so often?
Once to verify the checksum on the upgrade file, once after it's applied.  The system should never need to call back after that, everything (restore of files, apps etc) should be handled locally.  No reason for Apple to verify them, in fact I should be able to do the enotre procedure offline.
    - Why can I not download the upgrade on any install of iTunes vs just one?
It's upgrading, not adding or removing anything, so why do I have to clog up a system all night because the family iDevices were all connected here?  But that's a whole other issue that's been flogged to death here.
    - Why can't we download the files and upgrade the devices offline?  See the above question as well.
I'm guessing that given the poor communication with apple's systems and the beating they're probably taking tonight with the verification traffic, someone's got to be thinking about this?
    - Why does EVERY change want to delete everything on the device?
So stupid, not even going there.  I have to delete eveything on my iPod to add ONE book?  Really?
I keep hoping that some time they'll get it right, but now that Steve is gone (RIP good sir) I'm guessing not so much....

Even if you update a Microsoft product it too has to be verified by the host as a legitimate program that can be signed off as genuine. Things happen, though Apple's upgrading is far better than others. Getting frustrated with it only makes things worse as you can do things without knowing you clicked the wrong button or forgot to press a button.

  • 64 bits: why should I use it?

Just for the sake of discussion: If I have a program offered in 32 and 64 bit modes, why should I use the 64 bit version?
For example, the well known Videolan Player, aka VLC Media Player, recently updated to version 1.0.2, comes in 32 an 64 bit flavors. When would one version be used in lieu of the other?
And saying "because it is bigger and hence better" is not true. Even Apple points out in the developer pages about the 64-bit fallacy: in that mode, all data structures duplicate in size and if the hardware remains the same, performance will suffer cause you have to push twice the amount of information.

I just did a test with VLC Player (version 1.0.2), I played the same video in both 32 bit and 64 bit modes (NOTE: NOT talking about the kernel, but the program). Played it several times in both modes and even alternated between modes. In 64 bit mode it caused one of my processors to spike to 104% usage for the first 20 sec before dropping to 4-5%. In 32 bit mode processor usage remained at 4-5% the entire time.
Played the same video in Quicktime Player X in both modes and saw no difference (used 5-8% processor usage).
So to answer the question about when to use one version over the other I would say if one version causes notable problems/issues and the other doesn't than use the one that doesn't. Generally you shouldn't see a noticeable difference except in high-end programs that are crunching massive amounts of data.

  • After recent Verizon upgrade, my music files are messed up.  Used to be able to see all artists.  Now only some artists display and there's one giant file of "unkown".  Why would that change affter the upgrade?

Prior to March, 2015 upgrade, all my music appeared by Artist.  After the March, 2015, upgrade, about half of my music appears by Artist and then there's one giant "unknown" file.  Why would this change with the upgrade?  Makes my music unsearchable unless I want to search by the song name or album name.

You can try an app like Album Art in the Play Store and it will take any tag info and find and sort music.  Should work unless the music files were altered during update, in that case you'd need to remove those files and re-add them to the phone.

  • Why Should I go for 11g

Since my database and application running well for long time and not major problems then why should I go for 11g. Why not stick to 10g more 2 to 4 years.
    Share your ideas....

    Hi there,
I dont think that it matters on this too much that your applications and db are running ( or not running ) fine ovr a version x so you should migrate to y version.I have seen shops still running on 817 also and there are many who have opted for 11g also. There are alot of factors which effect the decision.I wont recommend anyone at the moment to go for 11g as its the first release and the R1 product is not usualy so stable. If I really wish to upgrade , I shall wait for atleast 11gR2 to come.
If you are happy with the performance of 10g and are stable than I dont thikn that you have any drastic need for upgrade to 11g any time soon.
    Just my 2 cents....
    Aman....
