  • IBook questions from a total noob.

Well, greetings to all of you! I am the most proud owner of an iBook "Snow" Dual USB, 500 mhz, 320mb RAM, 10gb HDD. I won this on eBay 3 weeks ago for $15 with a supposedly dead HDD and since it was local there was no shipping charges! Since I'm actually using it to type this, the hard drive is in fact fine, a bit small but fine. There is no Airport Card, but I see from the antenna it is possible to put one in there. Anyway, my question has probably been asked a billion times, but from what I read nobody has an explanation just a simple "No". Obviously I want to upgrade the Hard Drive, BUT, if I'm going to be in there anyway I want to put a combo drive in. However, I've seen 700-900mhz Logic Boards on eBay, not cheap but not outrageous either. I want to swap out the old 500mhz one with a 700-900mhz replacement. The Form factor is the same, all the screw holes are identical, other then the possible display incompatibility I see no reason why it can't be done. Please, explain to me, in vast detail, why this cannot be done and cannot work. Other then the amount of time....I see no issues. Thank you for your' time, I look forward to the responses! =^)

See now we're getting somewhere, obviously there's more to it then just swapping out the Logic Board and having it just work. Yet apparently it can be done. Of course, it would seem to be more of an annoyance then it is worth, but I figured to try and squeeze a bit more juice from this apple...ha ha ha. I had figured if I was going to have it apart to put in a replacement Hard Drive, then why not just go ahead and go for the full monty, right? I suppose a stick of 512mb RAM and a larger, faster spinning hard drive will be all I'll be doing to this machine. The simple fact that I only paid $15 for the unit and $35.00 for the OS X 10.3 Panther CD's and it works has me thrilled, really! It is my first Apple computer and I love being able to mess around with it, but I'm quickly becoming aware of the severity of it's limitations. Many of the applications I see require either OS X 10.4 Tiger, or it'll work with Panther but I need a G4 800mhz cpu....etc, etc, etc. I guess it's hard to take on the world when one is only 3 feet tall, figuratively speaking. But I'm glad to have an Apple computer and I'm only sorry I wasted so much time with Windows PC's and that I shelled out for Crappy VISTA and went back to XP!!!! Grrr.

  • PDF, iPad, and iBooks question

I seem to be able to import any PDF into itunes, but only certain ones will let me drag them onto my iPad for iBooks.  What are the restrictions that let me copy some but not others?

I can't answer your question directly but you might wish to try the (free) Adobe Reader app.  It's never given me any trouble.

  • HT4059 iBooks 2/ iBooks Author

There is neither iBooks 2 nor iBooks Author in my App Store in my iPad2. There is a video in the apple website showing how students interact with their iBooks/notebooks on iPads. I don't own a computer because I don't like computers. Is a computer required for apps like this?

Lion may still be available if you call the online Apple Store, though a couple of recent threads have reported it as no longer available. If the Apple Store still has it, they will ask for your Apple ID and credit card number and will then send you a code which you can redeem in the Mac App Store.
Alternatively, you may still be able to find the USB installer at a local Apple Store or an Apple dealer, though available stocks will probably disappear quickly if they have not already. Otherwise you'll have to look for the USB installer on the open market, such as through eBay or a Mac User Group. Those USB installers are starting to rise in price.
An alternative, if your MBA supports it, would be to upgrade directly to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. With either Lion or Mountain Lion, confirm compatibility of your exising applications and peripherals before you upgrade.
    Regards.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Communities page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums and in the Apple Knowledge Base, before you post a question.

  • HT4059 iBooks on iPad and iPhone problem

The books in my iBooks will not stay in the collection I put them in.  They just keep returning to Purchased Books.  But some will randomly place themselves in Books without being put there.  I tried setting up a different collection and putting them all in there, but as soon as you exit the ap and come back - they are all back where they started from. I'm so frustrated!  I also cannot get any books to delete.  Can anyone help me?

    Hi vmarlin!
I have an article here that I believe will go a long way toward explaining what is going on with your iBooks app:
iBooks: Tips for managing your iBooks library and storage on iOS devices
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5544
Specifically, I believe this will address your questions:
To free up storage on your device while keeping your library organization, tap Delete This Copy. The copy of the book on that iOS device will be removed, but the cover of the book will remain in your iBooks library with a cloud icon visible in the upper corner. To download the book again, just tap the book cover.
To remove a purchased book from your library on all of your devices, tap Delete From All Devices. The book will be removed from all of your iOS devices, and its cover will only appear in the Purchased Books collection with a cloud icon visible in the upper corner. If you change your mind, you can download the book again from your Purchased Books collection.
So if your books are not downloaded onto the device, they will still show up in your iBooks app with the "download from iCloud" icon in the upper right hand corner, but they will only appear in the Purchased Books section. You will want to download the books you want onto your device, then arrange them into the Collections you would like them to reside in. Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • Ahem 'New' iBook questions

Picked up my first Apple computer, a 466mhz Graphite iBook w/320mb RAM and that oh so roomy 10gb HD. And of course, I have a couple of questions:
This is my first experience with OS X and it came with 10.3 installed. In the interest of freeing up some HD space can I nuke the OS9 support that I'm finding in the application folders? Or is it vitally important for something and I should hang on to it for whatever reason? Currently i've got about 2.3gb free on the HD and would like to expand that a bit. I realize that changing out the HD in the future will be a major PITA if it comes to that. While I'm at anything else that can go? I got rid of iTunes, bluetooth support programs and Garageband because I have no use for them, but i'm not sure what else can be jettisoned.
Second, while the machine appears to be fully functional the graphite rubber colored bits, especially on the bottom of the machine are pretty chewed up. Is it possible to just find the 'skin' somewhere, remove the rest of the rubber with a gentle solvent and re-apply? I'm pretty sure this unit used to be used in an elementary school and it shows...

OS 9 isn't a necessity unless you need to run OS 9 applications. Otherwise you can delete these folders:
"System Folder" (not to be confused with the folder named "System.")
    "Applications (Mac OS 9)"
    "Documentation"
This might free up around 1 GB or so of space on the hard drive. However, a 10 GB hard drive is too small for OS X. 20 GBs would be the practical minimum. You need to have at least 8-10 GBs of free space on the hard drive, although it is possible to have as little as 3 GBs free but any less is a potential problem.
Panther requires a minimum of 128 MBs of RAM, but from a practical usage viewpoint 512 MBs is much better. 320 MBs is a practical minimum. Without a lot of RAM the OS will be slower and more sluggish.
Bear in mind that an iBook was not designed to run OS X, so don't expect great performance.

  • HT4059 iBooks - some books never load - just hang

I added iBooks to my sons iPad (1)
I went to my purchased books and attempted to download (from iCloud) the childrens books I had purchased and loaded on my iPad (mini)
The books NEVER download! - They just hang and even if I delete the app and all contents and start again it does the same thing every time!
I even plugged the iPad into my Macbook to sync by wire. - Same problem. Tried this for hours - no luck.
I tried to upload a grown up book and it worked... Both devices use the same apple ID
    Very frustrating - any ideas?

  • G4 ibook question mark folder on startup

Put a logic board and new hard drive in g4 1.33 12inch ibook.  Trying to load tiger ,I get a folder with a question mark on the screen.  What does that mean ?

Is it 10.4.0? If so, it's too early to work.
Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new? It should include Mac OS X 10.4.2.

  • IBook questions

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum. I'm a fairly recent Logic Pro 7.1 user. I run it on an eMac with a 1 gig of RAM, and it works wonderfully.
I'm considering getting a 12 inch iBook. My intention would be to use it mainly for sequencing when I'm away from home, so I probably wouldn't be using a ton of heavy duty plug-ins at once. I figure I can freeze tracks, and do more heavy duty processing at home.
    Here are my questions.
    1. To run my copy of Logic and both machines, would I just need to move the USB key from computer to computer?
    2. How would I open up a song started in one computer on the other computer? Would I need to burn the file to a CD? Can I use one of those USB memory sticks?
Thanks in advance for the help,
    John

    hi,
yes you can have both desktop and laptop use logic , just plug in the XSKey into the one you want to use
there are many ways to transfer your logic songs files between computers. CD, usb memory stick, usb or firewire external hard drive, set up network using ethernet or wireless through airport, or ?. To do large files quickly, I start my laptop holding down the T (target drive) on the keyboard which turns the computer into a firewire hard drive that I can just hook up via firewire to my desktop and just drag my files over to it.

  • Really Important iBooks Question

I publsihed my iBook text book. How come I cant see it in the iBook store? I only see 8 textbooks from the 3 announced companies. Also I don't see textbooks from anyone else either. Anyone know why? Is apple not accepting third part books?

You are not speaking to apple here and nobody can answer your question.  Please stop posting it over and over again.

  • Odd iBook question - g4 board in a g3 case?

After dealing with another logic board failure on my iBook g3, I have reached the point of wondering if I should avoid the g3 boards entirely and go with an iBook g4 board this time.
Does anyone know if the logic board from a 12" iBook g4 will physically fit into the case of my 12" iBook g3? And what about all the other internal components, would they be compatible with a g4 board, or would they all have to be replaced as well?

After more than six years in the Apple iBook Discussions (anyone who was here before August 25, 2000 got that "join" date because of a Discussions software update), starting, myself, with a 300MHz Tangerine iBook and then a 500MHz Dual USB iBook and making approximately 10,000 posts in this Dual USB iBook "usage" forum here, I have never, ever heard of anyone who has successfully done that. If I were you, I would listen to Ronda's advice...

  • HT4059 Ibooks no longer works for bookmarks on IPAD 2 since IOS 7 Upgrade

Since upgrading to IOS7 on my Ipad 2, the booksmark feature in IBooks no longer works.  If you close the book and reopen it will take you back to the beginning of the book.  Very difficult to read a book and keep track of where I left off.  Since the upgrade, I have not read a book on my IPad and this has been painful.  Starting to wonder if they will fix the issue or if I need to move onto another device such as the Surface or Galaxy 10.

My Iphone 5 (6.1.3) was working perfectly with my Apple tv3, streaming videos, musica...
I have just upgraded both and....No AIRPLAY, Both connected, both with internet conexion but my apple tv somehow does not work properly (my ipad retina does not pick the ATV neither)
I have restarted it three time as well as conected it to itunes to restore it 3 o 4 times now...
    Just getting bored...
I have restarted the router too (oddly enough someone, somewhere suggested it) but no luck so far.
    Techs ideas welcome,
    Thanks guys

  • Ancient 12" iBook question

I have an ancient 12" iBook which I would like to put to use running Power PC software but could do with  bigger screen. The iBook has a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM and Video mirroring supports VGA video out to an external display.
Can anyone suggest the size of monitor this will support.
    Thanks

Please let us know more about your iBook. Which exact model is it? You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Which version of the OS is it running? I'm guessing that you mean it has 32 MB of VRAM?
